Joel Cudworth (a/k/a Marilyn Rivers) is a drag performer in North Carolina. Cudworth discusses his performance career and aspects of LGBTQ life in the Triad from the 1970s to the present.

Marnie Thompson is co-Managing Director of the Fund for Democratic Communities (F4DC), where she focuses on capacity-building for social justice activists and organizations and building a new kind of economy based in principles of cooperation, democracy, justice, and sustainability. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, she has lived in North Carolina for most of her life, working with several organizations devoted to promoting social justice and civil right. In this interview, Thompson discusses her career in activism and her work with the Fund for Democratic Communities.

This chapter considers some essential elements needed to cultivate an inclusive library environment. These include environmental scanning, the benefits of establishing a committee focused on inclusion and diversity, building communities of practice, and training/learning opportunities for library employees. Also considered are community outreach initiatives, both on and off campus, which extend the libraries’ missions of promoting DEI. These initiatives are measurable and impactful and have a significant influence on recruitment and retention.

Dirk Robertson and James Sands are a married couple in Lewisville, NC. Robetson is the Co Founder, Equality Winston-Salem, has served on the Board of Directors for AIDS Care Services and North Star LGBTQ+ Community Center. He was also a member of the Triad Pride Men's Chorus and founder of the Sunday Tea League Invitational. Both Sands and Robertson are librarians. In this interview Robertson and Sands discuss their life an work in the Triad, touching upon several LGBTQ+ organizations and initiatives. Robertson additionally discusses the 2019 debate of LGBTQ+ acceptance in the Methodist Church. Jay Poole was awarded his Associates degree in Arts, Liberal Studies, from Davidson County Community College in 1982, Bachelor of Arts, Psychology, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1984, his Masters of Social Work in 1999, and his Doctor of Philosophy, Curriculum and Teaching with Specialization in Cultural Studies, in 2009. Dr. Poole has taught at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro as an assistant professor since 2010. In this interview, Poole discusses the social climate for LGBTQ+ people in the Triad. Elliott Kimball is an Assistant Director in the Office of Intercultural Engagement at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, focusing on LGBTQIA+ outreach and advocacy on the campus. In this interview, Kimball discusses the climate in Higher Education for LGBTQIA+ students, as well as his experience training staff and faculty in LGBTQIA+ education and advocacy.

William Southerland is Choral Artistic Director and Conductor of the Triad Pride Women's Chorus and the Triad Pride Men's Chorus (https://triadprideperformingarts.org/). He is also a doctoral candidate in the UNC Greensboro School of Music. In this interview, conducted as part of the PRIDE! of the Community Project (https://library.uncg.edu/dp/pride/), Will speaks about the development and culture of the Triad Pride Choruses, as well as his own research involving GALA Choruses.

Frank Bennedetti and Gary Trowbridge detail their lives and experiences as gay men, from living in Atlanta, to their move to the triad of North Carolina.

Janet Joyner is a community leader in supporting LGBTQ youth in Winston-Salem. In 2000, the State Superintendent of Education appointed her to the Safe Schools Advisory Board of the NC Department of Public Instruction where she served for 5 years. She was instrumental in the passing of a state-wide anti-bullying policies, specifically the Stop School Violence Protection Act in July of 2009. Joyner served on the national Advisory Council of the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), founding the GLSEN Winston-Salem chapter.

Lennie Gerber is a physical education scholar turned lawyer who, for decades, fought in court for the LGBT community. Lennie details her early life including her relationship with late wife, Pearl, to her post-retirement career with charity organizations, and everything else in between.

Jeff Rainey is a Greensboro Native who worked at multiple gay bars in the in 1980s and 1990s. In this interview he speaks about gay social life in the area.
