To test basic assumptions inherent to most theories of molecular liquids and glasses, Infrared spectroscopy is carried out on short polyalcohols at temperatures ranging from far above to far below their glass transition. By analyzing specific vibrations, the thermal expansion of covalent bonds and hydrogen bridges is determined revealing striking differences. A comparison with density verifies the negligibility of \textit{intra}molecular expansion but exposes severe inhomogeneities on \textit{inter}molecular scale. This signals distinct roles in glassy densification and promotes an atomistic understanding.

This work reports on temperature-induced out-diffusion and concentration decay of the prominent intrinsic point defect VNi (nickel vacancy) in the wide-gap p-type semiconductor nickel oxide (NiO). VNi can easily be introduced into NiO thin films by offering high oxygen partial pressures during film growth, rendering nonstoichiometric semiconducting structures. However, exposure to lower oxygen supply after growth, e.g. in a standard atmosphere, usually leads to a gradual decrease of film conductivity, because the vacancy concentration equilibrates. In this study, we observe this process in situ by performing temperature-dependent measurements of the electrical conductivity on a room temperature-grown NiO film. At a temperature of 420K under exclusion of oxygen, the doping level decreases by a factor of 8 while the associated room temperature dc conductivity drops by six orders of magnitude. At the same time, out-diffusion of the mobile VNi species can be indirectly observed through the occurrence of electrode polarization characteristics.

In this work, we revisit the issue of the nature of electronic transport in nickel oxide (NiO) and show that the widely used model of free small polaron hopping, initially raised to characterize transport in high-purity samples, is not appropriate for modeling intrinsically doped NiO. Instead, we present extensive evidence, collected by means of temperature- and frequency-dependent measurements of the electrical conductivity $\sigma$, that the model of polaronic inter-acceptor hopping can be used to consistently explain the electronic conduction process. In this framework, holes are localized to acceptors (Ni vacancies), forming a strongly bound, polaron-like state. They can only move through the film by hopping to a neighboring, at least partially unoccupied, acceptor. This renders the spatial overlap between neighboring polaronic wave functions a highly critical parameter. The signature of this process is the occurrence of two temperature regions of the DC conductivity, separated by about half the Debye temperature $\theta_D/2 \approx 200 K$. For $T > \theta_D/2$, holes are transferred by phonon-assisted hopping over the potential barrier between two sites, whereas phonon-assisted tunneling through the barrier dominates below that temperature. We also show that the degree of structural and electronic disorder plays a vital role in determining the characteristics of the transport process: high disorder leads to strong energetic broadening of the acceptor states such that hopping to more distant sites may be favored over transfer to nearest neighbors (variable range hopping). The assumption of high binding energies of the charge carriers at VNi is in accordance with the recent paradigm shift regarding the understanding of the electronic structure of NiO: holes doped into NiO couple to Ni 3d spins, thereby occupying deep polaron-like states within the band gap (Zhang-Rice bound doublets).

Glassy dynamics and charge transport are studied for the polymeric Ionic Liquid (PIL) poly(tris(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethyl)ammonium acryloxypropylsulfonate) (PAAPS) with varying molecular weight (9700, 44200, 51600 and 99500 g per mol) by Broadband Dielectric Spectroscopy (BDS) in a wide frequency (0.01 - 10E7 Hz) and temperature range (100 - 400 K) and by DSC- and AC-chip calorimetry. The dielectric spectra are characterized by a superposition of (i) relaxation processes, (ii) charge transport and (iii) electrode polarization. The relaxation processes (i) are assigned to the dynamic glass transition and a secondary relaxation. Charge transport (ii) can be described by the random free-energy barrier model as worked out by Dyre et al.; the Barton-Namikawa-Nakajima (BNN) relationship is well fulfilled over more than 8 decades. Electrode polarization (iii) follows the characteristics as analyzed by Serghei et al.; with deviations on the low frequency side. The proportionality between the relaxation rate of the dynamic glass transition and the charge carrier hopping rate reflects the nature of charge transport as glass transition assisted hopping. Hereby, the PIL under study exposes the highest dc-conductivity values observed for this class of materials below 100 oC so far, and for the first time a conductivity increase by rising degree of polymerization. Deviations of molecular shapes from spherical symmetry may give rise to a variety of novel phenomena, including their dynamic behavior. It has recently been predicted [Mazza \textit{et al}. Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{105}, 227802 (2010)] that liquid crystals in the reentrant nematic phases may show unexpectedly high rates of translational displacements. Using broadband dielectric spectroscopy and a single-component thermotropic liquid crystal we explore molecular dynamics in the vicinity of the reentrant nematic transition and find the formation of a maximum in the mobilities upon changing temperature. The occurrence of the high mobility states are found to be history-dependent due to the formation of metastable mesophases on heating. The experimental results are further supported by computer simulation. Our results contribute to the clarification of an ongoing controversy on the dynamics of reentrant nematics.

Optical tweezers are employed to measure the forces of interaction within a single pair of DNA-grafted colloids in dependence of the molecular weight of the DNA-chains, and the concentration and valence of the surrounding ionic medium. The resulting forces are short-range and set in as the surface-to-surface distance between the colloidal cores reaches the value of the brush height. The measured force-distance dependence is analyzed by means of a theoretical treatment based on the compression of the chains on the surface of the opposite-lying colloid. We present micro-rheological measurments of the drag force on colloids pulled through a solution of lambda-DNA (used here as a monodisperse model polymer) with an optical tweezer. The experiments show a violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation based on the independently measured viscosity of the DNA solution: the drag force is larger than expected. We attribute this to the accumulation of DNA infront of the colloid and the reduced DNA density behind the colloid. This hypothesis is corroborated by a simple drift-diffusion model for the DNA molecules, which reproduces the experimental data surprisingly well, as well as by corresponding Brownian dynamics simulations., Comment: 9 pages, 13 figures, 3 tables
