VOLTAGE ,FUEL cells - Abstract
In this work, three commercially available Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEAs) from Advent Technology Inc. and Danish Power Systems, developed for a use in High Temperature Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (HT-PEMFC), were tested under various Operating Conditions (OCs): over-stoichiometry of hydrogen gas (1.05, 1.2, 1.35), over-stoichiometry of air gas (1.5, 2, 2.5), gas oxidant (O
2 or air) and temperature (140 °C, 160 °C, 180 °C). For each set of operating conditions, a polarization curve (V–I curve) was performed. A semi-empirical and macroscopic (0D) model of the fuel cell voltage was established in steady state conditions in order to model some of these experimental data. The proposed parameterization approach for this model (called here the "multi-VI" approach) is based on the sensitivity to the operating conditions specific to each involved physicochemical phenomenon. According to this method, only one set of parameters is used in order to model all the experimental curves (optimization is performed simultaneously on all curves). A model depending on air over-stoichiometry was developed. The main objective is to validate a simple (0D) and fast-running model that considers the impact of air over-stoichiometry on cell voltage regarding all commercially available MEAs. The obtained results are satisfying with AdventPBI MEA and Danish Power Systems MEA: an average error less than 1.5% and a maximum error around 15% between modelled and measured voltages with only nine parameters to identify. However, the model was not as adapted to Advent TPS® MEA: average error and maximum error around 4% and 21%, respectively. Most of the obtained parameters appear consistent regardless of the OCs. The predictability of the model was also validated in the explored domain during the sensibility study with an interesting accuracy for 27 OCs after being trained on only nine curves. This is attractive for industrial application, since it reduces the number of experiments, hence the cost of model development, and is potentially applicable to all commercial HT-PEMFC MEAs. The first objective of the HYBUS project is to integrate a supercapacitor storage system in a trolleybus in order to ensure the continuity of onboard electrical systems supply. The aim is to integrate an energy storage system, composed by a huge number of supercapacitors, for the recovery of the braking energy of trolleybus and allow autonomy for several meters. Our work concerns the study of the lifetime of the storage system. Several accelerated aging tests on supercapacitors were developed in the AMPERE laboratory. These tests have shown that as far as ageing are concerned; the cycling is the major responsible. However, these changes are partially reversible during the rest time when regeneration phenomena are observed. A method based on the observed damage during cycling and the damage after regeneration, leads to a formal equation for the evolution of internal parameters of supercapacitors. An endurance test of complete storage systems was also performed in the laboratory. Experimental results show the heterogeneity of aging due to the existence of significant temperature gradients between components. As a result, a new balancing strategy to equalize the lifetime of each supercapacitors has been developed. In conclusion, our study has contributed to a better comprehension and evaluation of supercapacitors aging in order to improve the lifetime of this type of energy storage system.

[SPI.NRJ]Engineering Sciences [physics]/Electric power ,[SPI.NRJ] Engineering Sciences [physics]/Electric power - Abstract
International audience; Due to their relative low nominal voltage, a great number of supercapacitors are connected in order to obtain a suitable voltage. In the other side, the position of supercapacitor, inside the stack, has a great influence on the temperature of the component. It has been shown, in a lot of works, that the temperature has a great influence on the variation of the characteristics of the supercapacitors during time. So a balancing circuit is normally added in parallel with the supercapacitors in order to equalize all the voltages inside the stack, and to prevent overvoltage across the supercapacitor, which has the lowest capacitance. Our goal, in this article, is to propose a balancing strategy which takes into account the temperature of each supercapacitor inside the stack and the ageing law of the super-capacitors. This strategy improves the lifetime of the whole stack. more...

INSPEC Accession Number: 10939720; International audience; This paper deals with the lifetime of supercapacitors used in transportation. Increasing onboard electrical devices require adapted storage elements like supercapacitors to supply all electrical systems. Reliability and lifetime are two major factors for electrical storage system. Based on accelerated ageing, some supercapacitors have been studied using a dedicated test bench. Temperature, voltage, current and power cycling are monitored since supercapacitor ageing are affected by these parameters. An ageing law suitable for a transport application is obtained and discussed. more...

MATHEMATICAL models , *SUPERCAPACITORS , *URBAN transportation , *ELECTRIC discharges , *SENSITIVITY analysis , *TEMPERATURE effect - Abstract
In the field of urban transport, supercapacitors are submitted to relative high charge and discharge currents and therefore significant heat generation occurs. It has been shown that the temperature has a great influence on the aging mechanism of supercapacitors and, by consequence, on the lifetime of the system. That is why the thermal management becomes a key issue in the study of the performance of a supercapacitors stack. In this paper, thermal modeling of a supercapacitors stack is presented and a matrix representation of the model is deduced. Validation of the model has been carried out using measurement on a developed test bench. Sensitivity of the model according to input uncertainties is finally discussed.
