Abstract

The Nuclotron-base Ion Collider fAcility (NICA) is under construction at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR), with commissioning of the facility expected in late 2022. The Multi-Purpose Detector (MPD) has been designed to operate at NICA and its components are currently in production. The detector is expected to be ready for data taking with the first beams from NICA. This document provides an overview of the landscape of the investigation of the QCD phase diagram in the region of maximum baryonic density, where NICA and MPD will be able to provide significant and unique input. It also provides a detailed description of the MPD set-up, including its various subsystems as well as its support and computing infrastructures. Selected performance studies for particular physics measurements at MPD are presented and discussed in the context of existing data and theoretical expectations., Comment: 53 pages, 68 figures, submitted as a Review article to EPJA

Abstract

The results of calibration by cosmic muons of a shower lead-scintillation spectrometer of the sandwich type designed to work in high-intensity photon and electron beams with an energy of 0.1 - 1.0 GeV are presented. It was found that the relative energy resolution of the spectrometer depends on the angle of entry of cosmic muons into the spectrometer in the vertical plane and does not depend on the angle of entry in the horizontal plane. The relative energy resolution of the spectrometer was 16%. Placing an additional lead-scintillation assembly in front of the spectrometer improved the relative energy resolution of the spectrometer to 9%., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures, 5 references

Abstract

The possibility of using the effect of full energy absorption in a light scintillator when an electron beam passes through it to determine the energy characteristics of a low and medium energy beam (the absorbed energy method) is experimentally presented. The energy calibration of the quasi-monochromatic electron beam of the Pakhra accelerator of the P. N. Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences using scintillation detectors with a thickness of 14.5, 20, 23.5 and 51.2 cm was performed. For electron beam energies up to about 100 MeV and scintillation detector thicknesses from 5 to 20 cm the accuracy of electron beam energy determination was 10 to 20%, respectively., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, 5 references , scientific article

Abstract

The characteristics of the secondary electrons` calibration quasi-monochromatic beam of the accelerator S-25R "Pakhra" of the Lebedev Physical Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences (LPI) on the basis of magnet SP-57 are presented. With an electron energy in the range of 45-280 MeV, a collimator diameter in front of the trigger counters of 3 mm and copper Converter thicknesses of 1-3 mm, the energy resolution and beam intensity were 4.4-2.2% and around 16 e/sec, respectively.

Abstract

The differential cross section for the $^{12}$C$(\gamma,\pi^{+}p)$ reaction has been measured in the $\Delta$(1232) resonance region at high recoil momenta of the residual nuclear system. The data are analyzed under the assumption that the formation of the $\pi^+p$ pairs may be interpreted as a $\gamma\Delta^{++}\to\pi^+p$ process which takes place on a $\Delta^{++}$ preexisting in the target nucleus. Estimates of the $\Delta^{++}$ momentum distribution $\rho_{\Delta^{++}}(\bar{p})$=0.17 fm$^3$ for a mean momentum $\bar{p}=300\pm49$ MeV/c as well as the number of $\Delta$ isobars per nucleon $N_\Delta=0.017$ were obtained for $^{12}$C., Comment: 25 pages LaTeX2e, 7 eps figures

Abstract

Abstract

The new JINR project [1] is aimed at studies of highly excited nuclear matter created in nuclei by a high-energy deuteron beam. The matter is studied through observation of its particular decay products - pairs of energetic particles with a wide opening angle, close to 180°. The new precision hybrid magnetic spectrometer SCAN-3 is to be built for detecting charged (π±, K±, p) and neutral (n) particles produced at the JINR Nuclotron internal target in dA collisions. One of the main and complex tasks is a study of low-energy ηA interaction and a search for η-bound states (η-mesic nuclei). Abstract

Results of an experiment on the search for the emission of π0 mesons in neutron-induced fission of 235U nuclei based on the detection in coincidence of two γ-quanta from the π0-meson decay performed with the nuclear reactor developed at the Scientific-Research Nuclear Physics Institute at Tomsk Polytechnic University are described. The experimental setup comprised two Čerenkov spectrometers of total absorption for the detection and measurement of γ-quantum energy placed in two coaxial horizontal channels of the nuclear reactor. Water filters placed in the channels were used to protect the detectors from β-, γ-, and neutron fluxes. To reject the cosmic radiation, scintillation counters of large area, operating in anticoincidence mode, were placed above each spectrometer. The experimentally measured limitation on the probability of neutral pion emission in neutron-induced fission of nuclei was established ≤4.1·10–11 with a 90% confidence level. The energy spectrum of γ-quanta from the active reactor zone was measured in the range 32–65 MeV. The parameters of the spectrum deviated from the results of theoretical calculations and from the experiment performed with the nuclear pulse reactor developed at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (Dubna). Abstract

The cross section for the [sup 12]C(γ,π[sup +]p) reaction was measured in the range of the Δ(1232) isobar. The data were analyzed using the models taking into account the nucleon and isobaric degrees of freedom of the [sup 12]C nucleus. The conclusion is drawn that in the large-momentum transfer range the π[sup +]p pairs are produced in the course of the direct knocking-out of Δ[sup ++] isobar from the nucleus. Abstract

A nuclear-reactor experiment on the search for the emission of neutral pions from the neutron-induced fission of 235U nuclei has been carried out. To this end, an experimental setup for searching for the emission of π0 mesons with high sensitivity to this process has been designed and produced. This setup consisted of two Cherenkov total-absorption spectrometers for the detection and measurements of the energy of two gamma-ray photons from π0-meson decay. The spectrometers were placed at the exits of two coaxial horizontal experimental channels. To protect the detectors from low-energy β and γ rays and neutron fluxes, 3.5-m-long water filters were situated in the channels. To reject the cosmic background, large-area scintillation counters operating in the anticoincidence mode were placed over each spectrometer. The energy and time resolution of the spectrometers, as well as the efficiency of detecting charged particles by scintillation counters, were tested on the secondary electron beam of the Tomsk electron synchrotron Sirius. Runs of measurements of the effect on the operating reactor (duration of 805 h) were alternated with runs of measurements of background on the stopped reactor (duration of 403 h). Statistical processing of the experimental results yields an upper limit of ≤5.3×10–12 with a 90% confidence level for the probability of the emission of neutral pions from the neutron-induced fission of 235U nuclei. This result and results of other works carried out with sources of spontaneously fissioning 252Cf nuclei show that the probabilities of the emission of π0 mesons from spontaneous fission and fission induced by fission-spectrum neutrons are equal to each other. © 2004 MAIK “Nauka / Interperiodica”. Abstract

Calculations are presented for the integral cross-sections of?N ??N, ?N ? pN incorporating the one-particle intermediate state, theS11N * resonance; cross-sections are given for kinetic energies of the ? meson from 0 to 200 MeV for various values of the width ? of the resonance. The calculated cross-sections agree with experiment for r ˜ 160 MeV.
