30. Nickel (ii) Ion adsorption by native and treated pea pods

Abstract

The paper describes a study on static Ni2+ ions adsorption by native and treated shells of pea pods (Pisum sativum). Pea pod shells were treated with 1-3% sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide solutions. Adsorption isotherms were constructed and calculated according to the Langmuir, Freundlich, Tyomkin, and Dubinin-Radushkevich models. It was found that all constructed isotherms were most accurately described by the Freundlich model. It was determined that the highest sorption capacity for Ni2+ ions was shown by 3% sulfuric acid solution-treated pea pods. The paper also describes a study of the kinetics of Ni2+ ion adsorption by native and treated pea pod shells under static conditions. It was determined that the main mechanism of the process is mixed diffusion. The calculated thermodynamic parameters indicate physical adsorption.

Abstract

Isotherms of Zn2+ ions adsorption by native and 3% H2SO4 solution-treated leaves of Acacia auriculiformis were plotted. The resulting adsorption isotherms were processed using the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich and Temkin models. It was found that the isotherms of these Zn2+ ions adsorption with native leaves of earleaf acacia are most accurately described by the Temkin model and with modified leaves by the Langmuir model. It was found that the modification of acacia leaves with a 3% H2SO4 solution contributes to an increase in the maximum sorption capacity for Zn2+ ions from 9.5 mg/g to 30.5 mg/g. It was found that the kinetics of Zn2+ ions adsorption by native and modified Acacia auriculiformis leaves is most accurately described by a pseudo-second order model. The calculated values of the Biot's coefficient are in the range of 1 < Bi < 20, which indicates mixed diffusion in all cases. Thermodynamic parameters of the process of Zn2+ ions adsorption by native and acid-modified Acacia auriculiformis leaves were determined. The calculated adsorption (E) and Gibbs (∆G0) energies, as well as enthalpy and entropy indicate spontaneous, self-induced endothermic physical adsorption process in both cases.

Abstract

Modified sorption materials were produced by treating earleaf acacia (Acacia auriculiformis) bark with low-concentration (1-3%wt) sulfuric acid solutions. The sorption properties of native and modified acacia bark for zinc (II) ions were studied. Based on the values of the initial and equilibrium concentrations of zinc ions in the solution, the materials' sorption capacity (A, mmol/g) was found and adsorption isotherms were plotted. It was found that the isotherms are type I isotherms according to the IUPAC classification and describe the process of monomolecular adsorption. It was found that acacia bark treatment with H2SO4 solutions resulted in an increase in the sorption capacity of the latter with respect to zinc (II) ions due to an increase in the area of the sorption material due to the extraction of part of the biopolymers in the matrix of the sorption material into solution. This circumstance leads to an increase in the pore space of modified samples of sorption material, which is proved by a decrease in the degree of crystallinity. The thermodynamic process parameters were found using the resulting adsorption process constants of the Langmuir and Dubinin-Radushkevich models: sorption energy (E, kJ/mol) and Gibbs energy (ΔG, kJ/mol), which values indicate that the processes of zinc (II) ions adsorption by native and modified acacia bark are physical adsorption processes. The kinetics has been studied and kinetic dependences of the processes of Zn2+ ions adsorption by native and modified acacia bark have been plotted. The resulting kinetic dependences were analyzed based on the Boyd diffusion model and it was determined that in all four cases mixed adsorption occurred, that is, both external and internal diffusion are limiting.

Abstract

Currently, a popular method is growing plants in root-penetrable shells planted together with the plant. However, existing methods for growing plants have disadvantages. For this reason, we have presented a technology for production of a biodegradable composite polyhydroxybutyrate and lignin-based material for containers. The paper describes the method for producing biodegradable composites, provides the material density hardness, tensile strength, and impact strength data. Based on the resulting data analysis, it was concluded that the optimal content of wood filler for creating a biodegradable container is 40%-50% since the composite material has the highest physical and mechanical characteristics in this range.
