The concentration and distribution of 18 chemical elements were determined in 86 samples from eight sediment cores, 89/131 cm long, collected during 1965 along a 650 km traverse in the Novaya Zemlya Trough,Kara Sea, Russian Arctic. These include potentially toxic elements followed by the Arctic monitoring and assessment program (AMAP) (e.g.,As, Cr, Hg, Pb) and elements that may be related to the fine size minerals in these cores (e.g., Al, K, Mg). Arsenic and Hg had high concentrations (to 212 ppm / baseline 20 ppm, and to 875 ppb / baseline 338 ppb, respectively) in upper sections of cores. This suggests possible anthropogenic input in the Kara Sea before 1965. In contrast, most of the metals analysed had baseline contents throughout the cores. High As values in the sediments probably reflect a combination of diagenetic mobilization from depth to surface/near-surface sediments andinput from human activities such as dumped military materials in thetrough, mining and smelting effluents and emissions, and the burningof fossil fuel (especially coal). High Hg contents cannot be the result of the diagenetic path followed by As and may reflect an anthropogenic addition of Hg to high natural baseline values from atmosphericdeposition of industrial emissions as well as from decomposition of dumped wastes (e.g., lewisite) and naval reactor coolant discharged into the sea. Arsenic and Hg discharged into the southern Kara Sea from Siberia and the Novaya Zemlya archipelago move with oceanic currents and ice-floes as suspensates or adhered particulates for depositionin the trough. Arsenic is likely mobilized in particulates as the arsenate species sorbed to ferric oxy/hydroxides whereas Hg can be mobilized in organisms as the biomethylated form or Hg species (e.g., Hg2+, HgCl42-) sorbed onto organic and/or inorganic (clay mineral) particulates. This study determines an optimal spectral configuration for the CyanoSat imager for the discrimination and retrieval of cyanobacterial pigments using a simulated dataset with machine learning (ML). A minimum viable spectral configuration with as few as three spectral bands enabled the determination of cyanobacterial pigments phycocyanin (PC) and chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) but may not be suitable for determining cyanobacteria composition. A spectral configuration with about nine ideally positioned spectral bands enabled estimation of the cyanobacteria-to-algae ratio (CAR) and pigment concentrations with almost the same accuracy as using all 300 spectral channels. A narrower spectral band full-width half-maximum (FWHM) did not provide improved performance compared to the nominal 12 nm configuration. In conclusion, continuous sampling of the visible spectrum is not a requirement for cyanobacterial detection, provided that a multi-spectral configuration with ideally positioned, narrow bands is used. The spectral configurations identified here could be used to guide the selection of bands for future ocean and water color radiometry sensors.

Port Wine Birthmarks (PWBs) are a congenital vascular malformation on the skin, occurring in 1-3 per 1000 live births. We have recently generated PWB-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) as clinically relevant disease models. The metabolites associated with the pathological phenotypes of PWB-derived iPSCs are unknown, and so we aim to explore them in this study. Metabolites were separated by ultra-performance liquid chromatography and screened with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Orthogonal partial least-squares discriminant, multivariate, and univariate analyses were used to identify differential metabolites (DMs). KEGG analysis was used to determine the enrichment of metabolic pathways. A total of 339 metabolites was identified. There were 22 DMs, among which nine were downregulated-including sphingosine-and 13 were upregulated, including glutathione in PWB iPSCs, as compared to controls. Pathway enrichment analysis confirmed the upregulation of glutathione and the downregulation of sphingolipid metabolism in PWB-derived iPSCs as compared to normal ones. We next examined the expression patterns of the key molecules associated with glutathione metabolism in PWB lesions. We found that hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF1α), glutathione S-transferase Pi 1 (GSTP1), γ-glutamyl transferase 7 (GGT7), and glutamate cysteine ligase modulatory subunit (GCLM) were upregulated in PWB vasculatures as compared to blood vessels in normal skin. Other significantly affected metabolic pathways in PWB iPSCs included pentose and glucuronate interconversions; amino sugar and nucleotide sugars; alanine, aspartate, and glutamate; arginine, purine, D-glutamine, and D-glutamate; arachidonic acid, glyoxylate, and dicarboxylate; nitrogen, aminoacyl-tRNA biosynthesis, pyrimidine, galactose, ascorbate, and aldarate; and starch and sucrose. Our data demonstrated that there were perturbations in sphingolipid and cellular redox homeostasis in PWB vasculatures, which could facilitate cell survival and pathological progression. Our data implied that the upregulation of glutathione could contribute to laser-resistant phenotypes in some PWB vasculatures.

Paired measurements of phytoplankton absorption and backscatter, the inherent optical properties central to the interpretation of ocean colour remote sensing data, are notoriously rare. We present a dataset of Chlorophyll a (Chl a) -specific phytoplankton absorption, scatter and backscatter for 17 different phytoplankton groups, derived from first principles using measured in vivo pigment absorption and a well-validated semi-analytical coated sphere model which simulates the full suite of biophysically consistent phytoplankton optical properties. The optical properties of each simulated phytoplankton cell are integrated over an entire size distribution and are provided at high spectral resolution. The model code is additionally included to enable user access to the complete set of wavelength-dependent, angularly resolved volume scattering functions. This optically coherent dataset of hyperspectral optical properties for a set of globally significant phytoplankton groups has potential for use in algorithm development towards the optimal exploitation of the new age of hyperspectral satellite radiometry., (© 2023. Background: A radiological finding of a cavitary pulmonary lesion in a patient acutely infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 early during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic created a diagnostic and treatment dilemma, as invasive procedures with bronchoscopy and percutaneous needle lung biopsy posed an infection hazard to healthcare workers due to the associated risk of viral aerosolization. Available guidelines recommended delay of non-emergent procedures, but timely proceeding with those deemed urgent provided appropriate personal protective equipment and negative pressure isolation were available and exposure risk was not excessive. Thoughtful consideration by clinicians was required to avoid delay in diagnosis of a potential new malignancy and prevent unnecessary healthcare worker exposure to the virus. Additionally, acute severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 infection in patients with malignancy complicated timing of oncologic treatment., Case Presentation: A 26-year-old otherwise healthy Caucasian male initially presented with an enlarging right upper lobe cavitary pulmonary lesion despite antimicrobial therapy. During his hospitalization and evaluation, the patient was found to be acutely infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 without hypoxia or viral pneumonia. Bronchoscopy was deemed too high risk for viral aerosolization and healthcare worker infection. He underwent computed-tomography-guided percutaneous needle biopsy of the lesion by interventional radiology while on mechanical ventilation after elective intubation by anesthesiology. Biopsy revealed classic Hodgkin lymphoma consistent with primary pulmonary Hodgkin lymphoma. After collaboration with oncology, his treatment with combined chemotherapy and immunotherapy was delayed for 3 weeks following diagnosis to allow for viral clearance., Conclusion: A careful multidisciplinary strategy is required to expeditiously diagnose and treat aggressive cancers of the respiratory tract in patients acutely infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 while observing practices to prevent healthcare worker infection during the ongoing coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic., (© 2023. Emerging data science techniques of predictive analytics expand the quality and quantity of complex data relevant to human health and provide opportunities for understanding and control of conditions such as heart, lung, blood, and sleep disorders. To realize these opportunities, the information sources, the data science tools that use the information, and the application of resulting analytics to health and health care issues will require implementation research methods to define benefits, harms, reach, and sustainability; and to understand related resource utilization implications to inform policymakers. This JACC State-of-the-Art Review is based on a workshop convened by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute to explore predictive analytics in the context of implementation science. It highlights precision medicine and precision public health as complementary and compelling applications of predictive analytics, and addresses future research and training endeavors that might further foster the application of predictive analytics in clinical medicine and public health., (Copyright © 2020 American College of Cardiology Foundation. 1-2% of live births are to very low birth weight, premature infants that often show a developmental trajectory plagued with neurological sequelae including ventriculomegaly and significant decreases in cortical volume. We are able to recapitulate these sequelae using a mouse model of hypoxia where early postnatal pups are exposed to chronic hypoxia for one week. However, because the timing of hypoxic exposure occurs so early in development, dams and pups are housed together in the hypoxic chamber, and therefore, dams are also subjected to the same hypoxic conditions as the pups. To understand the relative contribution of hypoxia directly on the pups as opposed to the indirect contribution mediated by the effects of hypoxia and potential alterations in the dam's care of the pups, we examined whether reducing the dams exposure to hypoxia may significantly increase pup outcomes on measures that we have found consistently changed immediately following chronic hypoxia exposure. To achieve this, we rotated dams between normoxic and hypoxic conditions, leaving the litters untouched in their respective conditions and compared gross anatomical measures of normoxic and hypoxic pups with non-rotating or rotating mothers. As we expected, hypoxic-rearing decreased pup body weight, brain weight and cortical volume. Reducing the dam's exposure to hypoxic conditions actually amplified the effects of hypoxia on body weight, such that hypoxic pups with rotating mothers showed significantly less growth. Interestingly, rotation of hypoxic mothers did not have the same deleterious effect on brain weight, suggesting the presence of compensatory mechanisms conserving brain weight and development even under extremely low body weight conditions. The factors that potentially contribute to these compensatory changes remain to be determined, however, nutrition, pup feeding/metabolism, or changes in maternal care are important candidates, acting either together or independently to change pup body and brain development., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Introduction: Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) Global Health Center has developed a unique training program-Professionals' Training in Global Health (PTGH)--for mid- and late-career health professionals wanting to perform clinical services overseas in low-income countries., Methods: A multidisciplinary, multifaceted, structured curriculum underpins the clinical retraining, with classes aimed to be practical for clinical settings in resource-poor regions of the world. Preceptorships in family medicine and emergency medicine offer specialists the opportunity to observe primary care physicians one-on-one. In addition, PTGH trainees volunteer at free medical clinics where they work under the guidance and supervision of a family physician. For those individuals who live at some distance from Portland, Oregon, the course offers live videoconferencing, as well as archived streaming for later review., Results: As of November 2013, 79 health professionals have completed the course, with 45 graduates having subsequently volunteered on one or more overseas medical missions, for a total of 109 medical service visits to 36 countries. Pre- and post-course testing shows improvements in clinical skills and knowledge base., Discussion: Professionals' Training in Global Health has a 6-year record of interprofessional training and service both overseas and at home. Objective: To observe the effect of autoblood acupoint-injection (ABAI) on expression levels of pulmonary transacting T-cell-specific transcription factor GATA 3 (involving Th 2 cytokine expression), Th 1-specific T-box transcription factor T-box expressed in T-cells (T-bet) proteins and genes in asthmatic rats so as to explore its mechanisms underlying asthma relief., Methods: Forty-eight male SD rats were randomized into normal control (n = 8), model (n = 10), saline acupoint-injection (SAI, n = 10), ABAI (n = 10), and Dexamethasone (DXM, n = 10) groups. Asthma model was established during 28 days by 10% Ovalbumin + 10% aluminium hydroxide solution injection (i. p.) and vapourized 2% Ovalbumin inhaling for 14 days. For rats of the ABAI group, 0.4 mL autoblood was injected into the bilateral "Feishu" (BL 13) or "Shenshu" (BL 23) alternately, once every other day for six times. For rats of the DXM group, 50% DXM solution (0.5 mg/kg, i. p.) was given from the 17th day on after starting the modeling, once every other day for 11 days. Pulmonary GATA 3 and T-bet protein expression was detected by immunohistochemistry, and GATA 3 mRNA and T-bet mRNA expression detected by real time-PCR., Results: In comparison with the normal group, pulmonary GATA 3 protein and mRNA expression levels in the model group were up-regulated significantly (P < 0.01), while T-bet mRNA expression in the model group was down-regulated obviously (P < 0.01). Compared to the model group, GATA 3 protein and mRNA expression levels were down-regulated significantly in both ABAI and DXM groups (P < 0.01), while T-bet protein expression in ABAI group and T-bet mRNA expression in both ABAI and DXM groups were up-regulated significantly (P < 0.01, P < 0.05). No significant differences were found between model and SAI groups, and between ABAI and DXM groups in GATA 3 protein expression levels; and between ABAI and DXM groups in GATA 3 mRNA expression levels; between normal and model groups, and between SAI and ABAI groups in T-bet protein expression levels; between model and SAI groups and between ABAI and DXM groups in T-bet mRNA expression levels (P > 0.05). The ratio of GATA 3 mRNA/T-bet mRNA expression was significantly higher in the model group than in the normal group (P < 0.01), while obviously lower in the SAI, ABAI and DXM groups than in the model group (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Additionally, the ratios of GATA 3 mRNA/T-bet mRNA in ABAI and DXM groups were comparable (P > 0.05)., Conclusion: Autoblood acupoint injection is comparable to DXM intraperitoneal injection in down-regulating asthma-induced increase of pulmonary GATA 3 protein and mRNA expression as well as ratio of GATA 3 mRNA/T-bet mRNA, and in up-regulating asthma-induced decrease of T-bet mRNA expression in asthma rats, which may contribute to their effects in relieving asthma.

AIMS: The current study sought to explore the relationship between state and trait anxiety and delayed verbal memory performance in APOE-4 carriers and noncarriers who were aged 50 years and above. MATERIALS #ENTITYSTARTX00026; METHODS: The study was a retrospective analysis of 267 participants aged 50 years and above who had completed genetic testing for APOE status, the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and a comprehensive neuropsychological battery that included three delayed verbal memory measures (Wechsler Memory Scale - 3rd Edition, Logical Memory and Verbal Pairs subtests and the Buschke Selective Reminding Test). RESULTS: An inverse relationship was found between state anxiety and delayed verbal memory performance. No difference in level of anxiety was found between APOE-4 carriers versus noncarriers. CONCLUSION: State anxiety, but not trait anxiety, was found to have an inverse relationship with delayed verbal memory performance. For example, as self-reported state anxiety increased, delayed verbal memory scores decreased. This relationship did not appear to be influenced by the presence or absence of the APOE-4 allele.
