This work deals with the problem of designing disturbance decupled observers for the estimation of a function of the states in nonlinear systems. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of lower order disturbance decoupled functional observers with linear dynamics and linear output map are derived. Based on this methodology, a fault-estimation scheme based on disturbance decoupled observers will be presented. When a fault occurs in a process, it slowly propagates within the system and affects the measurements triggering a sequence of alarms in the control room. The operators are required to diagnose the cause of alarms and take necessary corrective measures. The idea of representing the alarm sequence as the fault propagation path and using the propagation path to diagnose the fault is explored. A diagnoser based on hidden Markov model is built to identify the cause of the alarm signals. The proposed approach is applied to an industrial case study: Tennessee Eastman process. The results show that the proposed approach is successful in determining the probable cause of alarms generated with high accuracy. The model was able to identify the cause accurately, even when tested with short alarm sub-sequences. This allows for early identification of faults, providing more time to the operator to restore the system to normal operation.

In this work, the problem of designing observers for estimating a single nonlinear functional of the state is formulated for general nonlinear systems. Notions of functional observer linearization are also formulated, in terms achieving exactly linear error dynamics in transformed coordinates and with prescribed rate of decay of the error. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a lower-order functional observer with linear dynamics are derived. The results provide a direct generalization of Luenberger's linear theory of functional observers to nonlinear systems.

This paper develops sufficient conditions for the existence of global exponential observers for two classes of nonlinear systems: (i) the class of systems with a globally asymptotically stable compact set, and (ii) the class of systems that evolve on an open set. In the first class, the derived continuous-time observer also leads to the construction of a robust global sampled-data exponential observer, under additional conditions. The notion of the relaxed Robust Control Lyapunov Function (relaxed RCLF) is introduced and is exploited for the design of robust feedback stabilizers for nonlinear systems. Particularly, it is shown for systems with input constraints that relaxed RCLFs can be easily obtained, while RCLFs are not available. Moreover, it is shown that the use of relaxed RCLFs usually results to different feedback designs from the ones obtained by the use of the standard RCLF methodology. Using the relaxed RCLFs feedback design methodology, a simple controller that guarantees robust global stabilization of a perturbed chemostat model is provided., Comment: 26 pages, 1 figure

In this work, a sampled-data nonlinear observer is designed using a continuous-time design coupled with an inter-sample output predictor. The proposed sampled-data observer is a hybrid system. It is shown that under certain conditions, the robustness properties of the continuous-time design are inherited by the sampled-data design, as long as the sampling period is not too large. This work proposes a notion of robust reachability of one set from another set under constant control. This notion is used to construct a control strategy, involving sequential set-to-set reachability, which guarantees robust global stabilization of nonlinear sampled data systems with positive sampling rate. Sufficient conditions for robust reachability of one set from another under constant control are also provided. In this paper it is showed that if a time-varying uncertain system is robustly completely detectable then there exists an estimator for this system, i.e. we can estimate asymptotically the state vector of the system. Moreover, if a time-varying uncertain system is robustly completely observable then there exists an estimator for this system that guarantees convergence of the estimates with assignable rate of convergence.
