Astrophysics - Cosmology and Extragalactic Astrophysics ,Astrophysics - Galaxy Astrophysics - Abstract
The gravitational-wave (GW) sky may include nearby pointlike sources as well as astrophysical and cosmological stochastic backgrounds. Since the relative strength and angular distribution of the many possible sources of GWs are not well constrained, searches for GW signals must be performed in a model-independent way. To that end we perform two directional searches for persistent GWs using data from the LIGO S5 science run: one optimized for pointlike sources and one for arbitrary extended sources. The latter result is the first of its kind. Finding no evidence to support the detection of GWs, we present 90% confidence level (CL) upper-limit maps of GW strain power with typical values between 2-20x10^-50 strain^2 Hz^-1 and 5-35x10^-49 strain^2 Hz^-1 sr^-1 for pointlike and extended sources respectively. The limits on pointlike sources constitute a factor of 30 improvement over the previous best limits. We also set 90% CL limits on the narrow-band root-mean-square GW strain from interesting targets including Sco X-1, SN1987A and the Galactic Center as low as ~7x10^-25 in the most sensitive frequency range near 160 Hz. These limits are the most constraining to date and constitute a factor of 5 improvement over the previous best limits., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We present the first modeled search for gravitational waves using the complete binary black hole gravitational waveform from inspiral through the merger and ringdown for binaries with negligible component spin. We searched approximately 2 years of LIGO data taken between November 2005 and September 2007 for systems with component masses of 1-99 solar masses and total masses of 25-100 solar masses. We did not detect any plausible gravitational-wave signals but we do place upper limits on the merger rate of binary black holes as a function of the component masses in this range. We constrain the rate of mergers for binary black hole systems with component masses between 19 and 28 solar masses and negligible spin to be no more than 2.0 per Mpc^3 per Myr at 90% confidence., Comment: 19 pages, 3 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a network of three detectors built to detect local perturbations in the space-time metric from astrophysical sources. These detectors, two in Hanford, WA and one in Livingston, LA, are power-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers. In their fifth science run (S5), between November 2005 and October 2007, these detectors accumulated one year of triple coincident data while operating at their designed sensitivity. In this paper, we describe the calibration of the instruments in the S5 data set, including measurement techniques and uncertainty estimation., Comment: 49 pages, 23 figures

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology ,Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena - Abstract
We present a search for periodic gravitational waves from the neutron star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The search coherently analyzes data in a 12-day interval taken from the fifth science run of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. It searches gravitational wave frequencies from 100 to 300 Hz, and covers a wide range of first and second frequency derivatives appropriate for the age of the remnant and for different spin-down mechanisms. No gravitational wave signal was detected. Within the range of search frequencies, we set 95% confidence upper limits of 0.7--1.2e-24 on the intrinsic gravitational wave strain, 0.4--4e-4 on the equatorial ellipticity of the neutron star, and 0.005--0.14 on the amplitude of r-mode oscillations of the neutron star. These direct upper limits beat indirect limits derived from energy conservation and enter the range of theoretical predictions involving crystalline exotic matter or runaway r-modes. This is the first gravitational wave search to present upper limits on r-modes., Comment: 26 pages, 5 figures

Astrophysics - High Energy Astrophysical Phenomena ,Astrophysics - Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics ,General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We present an up-to-date, comprehensive summary of the rates for all types of compact binary coalescence sources detectable by the Initial and Advanced versions of the ground-based gravitational-wave detectors LIGO and Virgo. Astrophysical estimates for compact-binary coalescence rates depend on a number of assumptions and unknown model parameters, and are still uncertain. The most confident among these estimates are the rate predictions for coalescing binary neutron stars which are based on extrapolations from observed binary pulsars in our Galaxy. These yield a likely coalescence rate of 100 per Myr per Milky Way Equivalent Galaxy (MWEG), although the rate could plausibly range from 1 per Myr per MWEG to 1000 per Myr per MWEG. We convert coalescence rates into detection rates based on data from the LIGO S5 and Virgo VSR2 science runs and projected sensitivities for our Advanced detectors. Using the detector sensitivities derived from these data, we find a likely detection rate of 0.02 per year for Initial LIGO-Virgo interferometers, with a plausible range between 0.0002 and 0.2 per year. The likely binary neutron-star detection rate for the Advanced LIGO-Virgo network increases to 40 events per year, with a range between 0.4 and 400 per year.

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We summarize the sensitivity achieved by the LIGO and Virgo gravitational wave detectors for compact binary coalescence (CBC) searches during LIGO's fifth science run and Virgo's first science run. We present noise spectral density curves for each of the four detectors that operated during these science runs which are representative of the typical performance achieved by the detectors for CBC searches. These spectra are intended for release to the public as a summary of detector performance for CBC searches during these science runs., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

- Abstract
The application of ferromagnetic steel products is pervasive in society, with important applications arising in electrical steel, oil and gas pipelines, transportation infrastructure, naval structures, aircraft landing gear, and automotive components. Magnetic properties of electrical steel materials play a key role in electrical motors and transformers, with a direct impact on energy efficiency. Measurement of response to magnetization has implications for non-destructive inspection methods, such as magnetic flux leakage, magnetic Barkhausen noise, and metal magnetic memory method. Examples include flaw detection, characterization of material properties, and identification of stress state in steel. An understanding of the magnetic response of steel materials can be facilitated by the use of magnetic objects (MOs). MOs are defined as regions of relatively independent magnetic behavior, typically about the size of a grain, to which fundamental magnetic energy considerations may be applied. This Tutorial outlines mechanisms by which MOs may be applied for modeling magnetic response in steel and presents examples of their application. MOs incorporate material physical properties such as microstructure, grain size, crystallographic texture, the presence of dislocations and impurity elements, and the presence of residual stress and stress load on the component. They can also accommodate a description of the evolution of magnetic domain structure under magnetizing conditions. As the MO model incorporates fundamental physics principles, it allows estimates of physical parameters that can be used to provide insights into the connections between magnetic properties and material properties, including hardness, embrittlement, and the presence of applied and residual stress. Practical applications include non-destructive characterization of the stress state of steel and an improved understanding of magnetic processes in electrical steel. Examples where such models may be applied include magnetic Barkhausen noise and magnetic memory method for the characterization of steel materials. This Tutorial summarizes recent advances in the MO model and its applications, providing the foundation for its further development. Magnetic objects have the potential to provide fundamental explanations and could form the basis for magnetic measurements and magnetization processes, including magnetic flux leakage, magnetic Barkhausen noise, and magnetic hysteresis. From these two cohorts, we constructed negative control cohorts of individuals diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection or acute myocardial infarction, stroke, cancer, low energy fracture, or head-trauma. Outcomes were SARS-CoV-2 infection, negative control outcomes (eg, mammography, prostate biopsy, operation for cataract, malignant melanoma, examination of eye and ear), and death. We used Cox regression to calculate adjusted incidence and mortality rate ratios (aIRR and aMRR).Results: Risks of SARS-CoV2 infection and all negative control outcomes were elevated in the vaccinated population, ranging from an aIRR of 1.15 (95% CI: 1.09– 1.21) for eye examinations to 3.05 (95% CI: 2.24– 4.14) for malignant melanoma. Conversely, the risk of death in the SARS-CoV-2 infected cohort and in all negative control cohorts was lower in vaccinated individuals, ranging from an aMRR of 0.23 (95% CI: 0.19– 0.26) after SARS-CoV-2 infection to 0.50 (95% CI: 0.37– 0.67) after stroke. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that observational studies of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectiveness may be subject to substantial confounding. Therefore, randomized trials are essential to establish vaccine efficacy after the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants and the rollout of multiple booster vaccines.Plain Language Summary: Why was this study done: After the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants and the rollout of multiple booster SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, the impact of vaccination on risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and death after the infection has mainly been explored in observational studies. We used negative control methods to investigate whether confounding affects the results of observational SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectiveness studies.Findings: We used Danish registry data obtained during the SARS-CoV-2 vaccine roll-out to conduct a nationwide, matched population-based cohort study of Danish residents 60– 90 years in which we compared vaccinated individuals with non-vaccinated individuals. Compared with unvaccinated individuals, vaccinated individuals had increased risks of SARS-CoV2 infection but also had increased risks of all negative control outcomes (mammography, prostate biopsy, operation for cataract, malignant melanoma, examination of eye and ear). The risk of death after SARS-CoV2 infection was lower in the vaccinated cohort, as was the risk of death after acute myocardial infarction, stroke, cancer, low energy fracture, and head-trauma.Meaning: The negative control methods indicate that observational studies of SARS-CoV-2 vaccine effectiveness may be prone to substantial confounding which may impact the observed associations. This bias may both lead to underestimation of vaccine effectiveness (increased risk of SARS-CoV2 infection among vaccinated individuals) and overestimation of the vaccine effectiveness (decreased risk of death after of SARS-CoV2 infection among vaccinated individuals). Our results highlight the need for randomized vaccine efficacy studies after the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants and the rollout of multiple booster vaccines. Keywords: COVID-19, vaccines, cohort studies, bias, confounding factors, epidemiologic

- Abstract
This work introduces a simple and efficient method to remove the impurities from a protein foam through washing the foam in a foam fractionation process (figure 1). Since the protein molecules adsorb irreversibly on the air interface, they do not desorb upon wash water addition and are transferred to the foam outlet. However, the entrained substances are directed downward by wash water to the drain outlet together with the liquid. Here, we performed experiments on bovine serum albumin (BSA), as a model protein and NaCl salt, as a model of soluble impurities. The experiments were conducted in a glass foam fractionation cell, where the liquid level was kept constant. The wash water was added on the foam top with different flow rates and BSA and NaCl concentrations were measured at the outlets for further analysis. The influence of initial bubble size and the wash water rate on the purification efficiency were investigated. The results revealed that the wash water displaces the entrained liquid in the foam and reduces the salt content at the foam outlet. The process shows higher salt removal for higher wash water rates as well as for foams with larger bubble sizes, where up to 93% of the salt was removed from the main solution in a steady state process. The washing efficiency is also influenced by air flow rate. Salt removal is enhanced in principle at lower air flow rates. However, the foam stability becomes an important issue at smaller air flow rates, since the increased foam collapse significantly reduces the foam flow to the outlet.

- Abstract
This work evaluates the addition of wash water to a foam fractionation cell in order to remove the soluble impurities from a protein foam. Due to the irreversible adsorption of the proteins at the air interface, the addition of wash water to the foam can displace the entrained substances downward together with the liquid, while the adsorbed proteins are not desorbed from the foam surface. The influence of initial bubble size and the wash water rate on purification efficiency were investigated. The results show that wash water displaces the entrained liquid in foam and reduces the salt content of the foam. The process shows higher salt removal for higher wash water rates as well as for foams with larger bubble sizes, where up to 93 % of the salt was removed from the main solution. A lower air flow rate can further enhance the washing efficiency. However, it intensifies the foam collapse and hence diminishes the foam outflow.

- Abstract
This work investigates the enrichment of bovine serum albumin (BSA) protein through foam fractionation. Here, we performed experiments using BSA and measured the recovery and grade of the extract. Additionally, an unsteady-state simulation of the protein foam fractionation process was carried out by numerically solving the liquid drainage equation in the foam. Thereby, the extracted liquid volume and protein concentration were calculated. Required quantities such as foam stability, interface coverage or bubble size distribution were measured in corresponding experiments and were fed into the model. The experiments showed that the foam coalescence accelerates the liquid drainage leading to dryer extract and higher protein enrichment. The modeling also reproduced the liquid recovery and extract concentration of the foam fractionation tests within a reasonable error range. The modeling solely relies on experimental inputs and does not require any tuning parameters. It can be further used for optimization or up-scaling of protein foam fractionation.
