Search

Self-enrichment is one of the leading explanations for chemical anomalies in globular clusters. In this scenario, various candidate polluter stars have been proposed to eject gas with altered chemical composition during the self-enrichment process. Most of the proposed polluters will also eject radioactive $^{26}$Al into the surroundings. Hence, any detection of $^{26}$Al in young massive star clusters (YMCs) would support the self-enrichment scenario if YMCs were indeed the progenitors of globular clusters. Observations of gamma-ray data from COMPTEL and INTEGRAL, as well as detections of $^{26}$AlF molecules by the Atacama Large Millimeter-submillimeter Array (ALMA), indicate the maturing of $^{26}$Al detection methods. Detection possibilities will be enhanced in the short- to mid-term by the upcoming launch of the Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI). The Square Kilometer Array (SKA) could in principle also detect radio recombination lines of the positronium formed from the decay products of $^{26}$Al. Here, we show for a sample of YMCs in the nearby Universe, where self-enrichment could plausibly take place. For some nearby galaxies, this could enhance $^{26}$Al by an order of one magnitude. Detecting $^{26}$AlF with ALMA appears feasible for many candidate self-enrichment clusters, although significant challenges remain with other detection methods. The Large Magellanic Cloud, with its YMC R136, stands out as the most promising candidate. Detecting a 1.8~MeV radioactive decay line of $^{26}$Al here would require at least 15 months of targeted observation with COSI, assuming ongoing self-enrichment in R136., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

The precession of astrophysical jets produced by active-galactic nuclei is likely related to the dynamics of the accretion disks surrounding the central supermassive black holes (BHs) from which jets are launched. The two main mechanisms that can drive jet precession arise from Lense-Thirring precession and tidal torquing. These can explain direct and indirect observations of precessing jets; however, such explanations often utilize crude approximations of the disk evolution and observing jet precession can be challenging with electromagnetic facilities. Simultaneously, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is expected to measure gravitational waves from the mergers of massive binary BHs with high accuracy and probe their progenitor evolution. In this paper, we connect the LISA detectability of binary BH mergers to the possible jet precession during their progenitor evolution. We make use of a semi-analytic model that self-consistently treats disk-driven BH alignment and binary inspiral and includes the possibility of disk breaking. We find that tidal torquing of the accretion disk provides a wide range of jet precession timescales depending on the binary separation and the spin direction of the BH from which the jet is launched. Efficient disk-driven BH alignment results in shorter timescales of $\sim 1$ yr which are correlated with higher LISA signal-to-noise ratios. Disk breaking results in the longest possible times of $\sim 10^7$ yrs, suggesting a deep interplay between the disk critical obliquity (i.e. where the disk breaks) and jet precession. Studies such as ours will help to reveal the cosmic population of precessing jets that are detectable with gravitational waves.

During the first four all-sky surveys eRASS:4 carried out from December 2019 to 2021, the extended Roentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) on board Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (Spektr-RG, SRG) observed the Galactic HII region Carina nebula. We analysed the eRASS:4 data to study the distribution and the spectral properties of the hot interstellar plasma and the bright stellar sources in the Carina nebula. Spectral extraction regions of the diffuse emission were defined based on X-ray spectral morphology and multi-wavelength data. The spectra were fit with a combination of thermal and non-thermal emission models. X-ray bright point sources in the Carina nebula are the colliding wind binary $\eta$ Car, several O stars, and Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. We extracted the spectrum of the brightest stellar sources, which can be well fit with a multi-component thermal plasma model. The spectra of the diffuse emission in the brighter parts of the Carina nebula is well reproduced by two thermal models, a lower-temperature component ($\sim$0.2 keV) and a higher-temperature component (0.6 - 0.8 keV). An additional non-thermal component dominates the emission above $\sim$1 keV in the central region around $\eta$ Car and the other massive stars. Significant orbital variation of the X-ray flux was measured for $\eta$ Car, WR22 and WR25. $\eta$ Car requires an additional time-variable thermal component in the spectral model, which is associated to the wind-wind-collision zone. Properties like temperature, pressure, and luminosity of the X-ray emitting plasma in the Carina nebula derived from the eROSITA data are consistent with theoretical calculations of emission from superbubbles. It confirms that the X-ray emission is caused by the hot plasma inside the Carina nebula which has been shocked-heated by the stellar winds of the massive stars, in particular, of $\eta$ Car., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

Active galactic nuclei (AGN) play an integral role in galaxy formation and evolution by influencing galaxies and their environments through radio jet feedback. Historically, interpreting observations of radio galaxies and quantifying radio jet feedback has been challenging due to degeneracies between their physical parameters. In particular, it is well-established that different combinations of jet kinetic power and environment density can yield indistinguishable radio continuum properties, including apparent size and Stokes I luminosity. We present an approach to breaking this degeneracy by probing the line-of-sight environment with Faraday rotation. We study this effect in simulations of three-dimensional relativistic magnetohydrodynamic AGN jets in idealised environments with turbulent magnetic fields. We generate synthetic Stokes I emission and Faraday rotation measure (RM) maps, which enable us to distinguish between our simulated sources. We find enhanced RMs near the jet head and lobe edges and an RM reversal across the jet axis. We show that increasing the environment density and the average cluster magnetic field strength broadens the distribution of Faraday rotation measure values. We study the depolarisation properties of our sources, finding that the hotspot regions depolarise at lower frequencies than the lobes. We quantify the effect of depolarisation on the RM distribution, finding that the frequency at which the source is too depolarised to measure the RM distribution accurately is a probe of environmental properties. This technique offers a range of new opportunities for upcoming surveys, including probing radio galaxy environments and determining more accurate estimates of the AGN feedback budget., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures. We present relativistic magnetohydrodynamic modelling of jets running into hydrostatic, spherically symmetric cluster atmospheres. For the first time in a numerical simulation, we present model cluster atmospheres based upon the Universal Pressure Profile (UPP), incorporating a temperature profile for a typical self-similar atmosphere described by only one parameter - $M_{500}$. We explore a comprehensive range of realistic atmospheres and jet powers and derive dynamic, energetic and polarimetric data which provide insight into what we should expect of future high-resolution studies of AGN outflows. From the simulated synchrotron emission maps which include Doppler beaming we find sidedness distributions that agree well with observations. We replicated a number of findings from our previous work, such as higher power jets inflating larger aspect-ratio lobes and the cluster environment impacting the distribution of energy between the lobe and shocked regions. Comparing UPP and $\beta$-profiles we find that the cluster model chosen results in a different morphology for the resultant lobes with the UPP more able to clear lobe material from the core; and that these different atmospheres influence the ratio between the various forms of energy in the fully developed lobes. This work also highlights the key role played by Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) instabilities in the formation of realistic lobe aspect-ratios. Our simulations point to the need for additional lobe-widening mechanisms at high jet powers, for example jet precession. The conditions required for massive star formation are debated, particularly whether massive stars must form in conjunction with massive clusters. Some authors have advanced the view that stars of any mass (below the total cluster mass) can form in clusters of any mass with some probability (random sampling). Others pointed out that the scatter in the determinations of the most massive star mass for a given cluster mass was consistent with the measurement error, such that the mass of the most massive star was determined by the total cluster mass (optimal sampling). Here we investigate the relation between cluster mass (M\textsubscript{ecl}) and the maximum stellar mass (M\textsubscript{max}) using a suite of SPH simulations. Varying cloud mass and turbulence random seed results in a range of cluster masses which we compare with their respective maximum star masses. We find that more massive clusters will have, on average, higher mass stars with this trend being steeper at lower cluster masses ($M\textsubscript{max} \propto M\textsubscript{ecl}^{0.31}$ for $M\textsubscript{ecl}<500M\,_{\odot}$) and flattening at higher cluster masses ($M\textsubscript{max} \propto M\textsubscript{ecl}^{0.11}$ for $M\textsubscript{ecl}>500M\,_{\odot}$). This rules out purely stochastic star formation in our simulations. Significant scatter in the maximum masses with identical initial conditions also rules out the possibility that the relation is purely deterministic (that is that a given cluster mass will result in a specific maximum stellar mass). Hotspots of radio galaxies are regions of shock-driven particle acceleration. Multiple hotspots have long been identified as potential indicators of jet movement or precession. Two frequent explanations describe a secondary hotspot as either the location of a prior jet termination point, or a deflected backflow-driven shock: the so-called Dentist's Drill and Splatter Spot models. We created high-resolution simulations of precessing jets with a range of parameters. In addition to the existing mechanisms, our results show three additional mechanisms for multiple hotspot formation: (1) the splitting of a large terminal hotspots into passive and active components; (2) jet stream splitting resulting in two active hotspots; (3) dynamic multiple hotspot complexes that form as a result of jet termination in a turbulent cocoon, linked here to rapid precession. We show that these distinct types of multiple hotspots are difficult to differentiate in synthetic radio maps, particularly hotspot complexes which can easily be mistaken for the jet itself. We discuss the implication for hypothesised binary supermassive black hole systems where jet precession is a key component of the morphology, and show a selection of potential precession candidates found using the LOFAR Two-Metre Sky Survey Data Release 2 (LoTSS DR2)., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Diffuse gamma-ray line emission traces freshly produced radioisotopes in the interstellar gas, providing a unique perspective on the entire Galactic cycle of matter from nucleosynthesis in massive stars to their ejection and mixing in the interstellar medium. We aim at constructing a model of nucleosynthesis ejecta on galactic scale which is specifically tailored to complement the physically most important and empirically accessible features of gamma-ray measurements in the MeV range, in particular for decay gamma-rays such as $^{26}$Al, $^{60}$Fe or $^{44}$Ti. Based on properties of massive star groups, we developed a Population Synthesis Code which can instantiate galaxy models quickly and based on many different parameter configurations, such as the star formation rate, density profiles, or stellar evolution models. As a result, we obtain model maps of nucleosynthesis ejecta in the Galaxy which incorporate the population synthesis calculations of individual massive star groups. Based on a variety of stellar evolution models, supernova explodabilities, and density distributions, we find that the measured $^{26}$Al distribution from INTEGRAL/SPI can be explained by a Galaxy-wide population synthesis model with a star formation rate of $4$-$8\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}\,yr^{-1}}$ and a spiral-arm dominated density profile with a scale height of at least 700 pc. Our model requires that most massive stars indeed undergo a supernova explosion. This corresponds to a supernova rate in the Milky Way of $1.8$-$2.8$ per century, with quasi-persistent $^{26}$Al and $^{60}$Fe masses of $1.2$-$2.4\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and $1$-$6\,\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, respectively. Comparing the simulated morphologies to SPI data suggests that a frequent merging of superbubbles may take place in the Galaxy, and that an unknown but strong foreground emission at 1.8 MeV could be present., Comment: 16 pages, 12 figures, 2 page appendix, accepted for publication in A&A

The presence of radioactive $^{26}$Al at 1.8 MeV reflects ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way. Diffuse emission from its decay can be measured with gamma-ray telescopes in space. The intensity, line shape, and spatial distribution of the $^{26}$Al emission allow a study of these nucleosynthesis sources. The line parameters trace massive-star feedback in the interstellar medium due to its 1~My lifetime. We aim to deepen previous studies of the $^{26}$Al emission in the Milky Way, using all gamma-ray data including single and double events as collected with SPI on INTEGRAL from 2003 until 2020. We apply improved spectral response and background as evaluated from tracing spectral details over the entire mission. The exposure for Galactic $^{26}$Al emission is enhanced using all event types measured within SPI. We re-determine the intensity of Galactic $^{26}$Al emission across the entire sky, through maximum likelihood fits of simulated and model-built sky distributions to SPI spectra for single and for double detector hits. We find an all-sky flux of (1.84$\pm$0.03$)\times$10$^{-3}$~ph~cm$^{-2}$s$^{-1}$ in the 1.809~MeV line from $^{26}$Al, determined as fitted to sky distributions from previous observations with COMPTEL. Significant emission from higher latitudes indicate an origin from nearby massive-star groups and superbubbles, also supported by a bottom-up population synthesis model. The line centroid is found at (1809.83$\pm$0.04~keV, and line broadening from source kinematics integrated over the sky is (0.62$\pm0.3$)~keV (FWHM)., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures. We present the Cosmological Double Radio Active Galactic Nuclei (CosmoDRAGoN) project: a large suite of simulated AGN jets in cosmological environments. These environments sample the intra-cluster media of galaxy clusters that form in cosmological smooth particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations, which we then use as inputs for grid-based hydrodynamic simulations of radio jets. Initially conical jets are injected with a range of jet powers, speeds (both relativistic and non-relativistic), and opening angles; we follow their collimation and propagation on scales of tens to hundreds of kiloparsecs, and calculate spatially-resolved synthetic radio spectra in post-processing. In this paper, we present a technical overview of the project, and key early science results from six representative simulations which produce radio sources with both core- (Fanaroff-Riley Type I) and edge-brightened (Fanaroff-Riley Type II) radio morphologies. Our simulations highlight the importance of accurate representation of both jets and environments for radio morphology, radio spectra, and feedback the jets provide to their surroundings., Comment: 25 pages, 20 figures. A strong nuclear kilomaser, W1, has been found in the nearby galaxy NGC 253, associated with a forming super star cluster. Kilomasers could arise from the accretion disc around supermassive stars (>10^3 Msun), hypothetical objects that have been proposed as polluters responsible for the chemical peculiarities in globular clusters. The supermassive stars would form via runaway collisions, simultaneously with the cluster. Their discs are perturbed by stellar flybys, inspiralling and colliding stars. This raises the question if an accretion disc would at all be able to survive in such a dynamic environment and mase water lines. We investigated what the predicted maser spectrum of such a disc would look like using 2D hydrodynamic simulations and compared this to the W1 kilomaser. We derived model maser spectra from the simulations by using a general maser model for appropriate disc temperatures. All our model discs survived. The model maser spectra for the most destructive case for the simulations of M = 1000 Msun are a reasonable match with the W1 kilomaser spectrum in terms of scaling, flux values and some of the signal trends. Details in the spectrum suggest that a star of a few 1000 Msun might fit even better, with 10,000 Msun clearly giving too large velocities. Our investigations thus support the hypothesis that kilomasers could pinpoint supermassive stars., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

Star clusters are known to be formed in turbulent molecular clouds. How turbulence is driven in molecular clouds and what effect this has on star formation is still unclear. We compare a simulation setup with turbulent driving everywhere in a periodic box with a setup where turbulence is only driven around the outside of the box. We analyse the resulting gas distribution, kinematics, and the population of stars that are formed from the cloud. Both setups successfully produce a turbulent velocity field with a power law structure function, the externally driven cloud has a more central, monolithic, clump, while the fully driven cloud has many smaller, more dispersed, clumps. The star formation follows the cloud morphology producing large clusters, with high star forming efficiency in the externally driven simulations and sparse individual star formation with much lower star formation efficiency in the fully driven case. We conclude that the externally driven method, which resembles a Global Hierarchical Collapse (GHC) scenario, produces star clusters that more closely match with observations., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, accepted by MNRAS

We present a method for applying spatially resolved adiabatic and radiative loss processes to synthetic radio emission from hydrodynamic simulations of radio sources from active galactic nuclei (AGN). Lagrangian tracer particles, each representing an ensemble of electrons, are injected into simulations and the position, grid pressure, and time since the last strong shock are recorded. These quantities are used to track the losses of the electron packet through the radio source in a manner similar to the Radio AGN in Semi-analytic Environments (RAiSE) formalism, which uses global source properties to calculate the emissivity of each particle ex-situ. Freedom in the choice of observing parameters, including redshift, is provided through the post-processing nature of this approach. We apply this framework to simulations of jets in different environments, including asymmetric ones. We find a strong dependence of radio source properties on frequency and redshift, in good agreement with observations and previous modelling work. There is a strong evolution of radio spectra with redshift due to the more prominent inverse-Compton losses at high redshift. Radio sources in denser environments have flatter spectral indices, suggesting that spectral index asymmetry may be a useful environment tracer. We simulate intermediate Mach number jets that disrupt before reaching the tip of the lobe, and find that these retain an edge-brightened Fanaroff-Riley Type II morphology, with the most prominent emission remaining near the tip of the lobes for all environments and redshifts we study., Comment: 17 pages, 15 figures. We have carried out relativistic three-dimensional simulations of high-power radio sources propagating into asymmetric cluster environments. We offset the environment by 0 or 1 core radii (equal to 144 kpc), and incline the jets by 0, 15, or 45{\deg} away from the environment centre. The different environment encountered by each radio lobe provides a unique opportunity to study the effect of environment on otherwise identical jets. We find that the jets become unstable towards the end of the simulations, even with a Lorentz factor of 5; they nevertheless develop typical FR II radio morphology. The jets propagating into denser environments have consistently shorter lobe lengths and brighter hotspots, while the axial ratio of the two lobes is similar. We reproduce the recently reported observational anti-correlation between lobe length asymmetry and environment asymmetry, corroborating the notion that observed large-scale radio lobe asymmetry can be driven by differences in the underlying environment., Comment: 13 pages, 11 figures. The cosmic evolution of the chemical elements from the Big Bang to the present time is driven by nuclear fusion reactions inside stars and stellar explosions. A cycle of matter recurrently re-processes metal-enriched stellar ejecta into the next generation of stars. The study of cosmic nucleosynthesis and of this matter cycle requires the understanding of the physics of nuclear reactions, of the conditions at which the nuclear reactions are activated inside the stars and stellar explosions, of the stellar ejection mechanisms through winds and explosions, and of the transport of the ejecta towards the next cycle, from hot plasma to cold, star-forming gas. Due to the long timescales of stellar evolution, and because of the infrequent occurrence of stellar explosions, observational studies are challenging. Due to their radioactive lifetime of million years, the 26Al and 60Fe isotopes are suitable to characterise simultaneously the processes of nuclear fusion reactions and of interstellar transport. We describe and discuss the nuclear reactions involved in the production and destruction of 26Al and 60Fe, the key characteristics of the stellar sites of their nucleosynthesis and their interstellar journey after ejection from the nucleosynthesis sites. We connect the theoretical astrophysical aspects to the variety of astronomical messengers, from stardust and cosmic-ray composition measurements, through observation of gamma rays produced by radioactivity, to material deposited in deep-sea ocean crusts and to the inferred composition of the first solids that have formed in the Solar System. We show that considering measurements of the isotopic ratio of 26Al to 60Fe eliminate some of the unknowns when interpreting astronomical results, and discuss the lessons learned from these two isotopes on cosmic chemical evolution., Comment: 51 pages, 44 figures; review from an ISSI workshop series; accepted for publication in PASA

Reticulum II (Ret II) is a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way and presents a prime target to investigate the nature of dark matter (DM) because of its high mass-to-light ratio. We evaluate a dedicated INTEGRAL observation campaign data set to obtain $\gamma$-ray fluxes from Ret II and compare those with expectations from DM. Ret II is not detected in the $\gamma$-ray band 25--8000 keV, and we derive a flux limit of $\lesssim 10^{-8}\,\mathrm{erg\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. The previously reported 511 keV line is not seen, and we find a flux limit of $\lesssim 1.7 \times 10^{-4}\,\mathrm{ph\,cm^{-2}\,s^{-1}}$. We construct spectral models for primordial black hole (PBH) evaporation and annihilation/decay of particle DM, and subsequent annihilation of positrons produced in these processes. We exclude that the totality of DM in Ret II is made of a monochromatic distribution of PBHs of masses $\lesssim 8 \times 10^{15}\,\mathrm{g}$. Our limits on the velocity-averaged DM annihilation cross section into $e^+e^-$ are $\langle \sigma v \rangle \lesssim 5 \times 10^{-28} \left(m_{\rm DM} / \mathrm{MeV} \right)^{2.5}\,\mathrm{cm^3\,s^{-1}}$. We conclude that analysing isolated targets in the MeV $\gamma$-ray band can set strong bounds on DM properties without multi-year data sets of the entire Milky Way, and encourage follow-up observations of Ret II and other dwarf galaxies., Comment: 8 pages, 10 figures, submitted

The ARCADE 2 balloon bolometer along with a number of other instruments have detected what appears to be a radio synchrotron background at frequencies below about 3 GHz. Neither extragalactic radio sources nor diffuse Galactic emission can currently account for this finding. We use the locally measured Cosmic ray electron population, demodulated for effects of the Solar wind, and other observational constraints combined with a turbulent magnetic field model to predict the radio synchrotron emission for the Local Bubble. We find that the spectral index of the modelled radio emission is roughly consistent with the radio background. Our model can approximately reproduce the observed antenna temperatures for a mean magnetic field strength B between 3-5 nT. We argue that this would not violate observational constraints from pulsar measurements. However, the curvature in the predicted spectrum would mean that other, so far unknown sources would have to contribute below 100 MHz. Also, the magnetic energy density would then dominate over thermal and cosmic ray electron energy density, likely causing an inverse magnetic cascade with large variations of the radio emission in different sky directions as well as high polarisation. We argue that this disagrees with several observations and thus that the magnetic field is probably much lower, quite possibly limited by equipartition with the energy density in relativistic or thermal particles (B = 0.2-0.6 nT). In the latter case, we predict a contribution of the Local Bubble to the unexplained radio background at most at the per cent level., Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, accepted by MNRAS

Radioactive 26Al is an excellent tracer for metal ejection in the Milky Way, and can provide a direct constraint on the modelling of supernova feedback in galaxy evolution. Gamma-ray observations of the 26Al decay line have found high velocities and hence require a significant fraction of the Galactic 26Al in the hot component. At the same time, meteoritic data combined with simulation results suggest that a significant amount of 26Al makes its way into stars before decay. We investigated the distribution into hot and cold channels with a simulation of a Milky-Way-like galaxy with massive-star feedback in superbubbles and with ejecta traced by 26Al. About 30-40 per cent of the ejecta remain hot, with typical cooling times of the order Gyr. 26Al traces the footpoints of a chimney-fed outflow that mixes metals turbulently into the halo of the model galaxy on a scale of at least 50 kpc. The rest diffuses into cold gas with temperatures less than about 10,000 K, and may therefore be quickly available for star formation. We discuss the robustness of the result by comparison to a simulation with a different global flow pattern. The branching ratio into hot and cold components is comparable to that of longer term average results from chemical evolution modelling of galaxies, clusters and the intracluster medium., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, accepted for MNRAS

Measurement and astrophysical interpretation of characteristic gamma-ray lines from nucleosynthesis was one of the prominent science goals of the INTEGRAL mission and in particular its spectrometer SPI. Emission from 26Al and from 60Fe decay lines originates from accumulated ejecta of nucleosynthesis sources, and appears diffuse in nature. 26Al and 60Fe are believed to originate mostly from massive star clusters. Gamma-ray observations open an interesting window to trace the fate and flow of nucleosynthesis ejecta, after they have left the immediate sources and their birth sites, and on their path to mix with ambient interstellar gas. The INTEGRAL 26Al emission image confirms earlier findings of clumpiness and an extent along the entire plane of the Galaxy, supporting its origin from massive-star groups. INTEGRAL spectroscopy resolved the line and found Doppler broadenings and systematic shifts from large-scale galactic rotation. But an excess velocity of ~200 km/s suggests that 26Al decays preferentially within large superbubbles that extend in forward directions between spiral arms. The detection of 26Al line emission from nearby Orion and the Eridanus superbubble supports this interpretation. Positrons from beta+ decays of 26Al and other nucleosynthesis ejecta have been found to not explain the morphology of positron annihilation gamma-rays at 511 keV that have been measured by INTEGRAL. The 60Fe signal measured by INTEGRAL is diffuse but too weak for an imaging interpretation, an origin from point-like/concentrated sources is excluded. Star clusters are fundamental units of stellar feedback and unique tracers of their host galactic properties. In this review, we will first focus on their constituents, i.e.\ detailed insight into their stellar populations and their surrounding ionised, warm, neutral, and molecular gas. We, then, move beyond the Local Group to review star cluster populations at various evolutionary stages, and in diverse galactic environmental conditions accessible in the local Universe. At high redshift, where conditions for cluster formation and evolution are more extreme, we are only able to observe the integrated light of a handful of objects that we believe will become globular clusters. We therefore discuss how numerical and analytical methods, informed by the observed properties of cluster populations in the local Universe, are used to develop sophisticated simulations potentially capable of disentangling the genetic map of galaxy formation and assembly that is carried by globular cluster populations., Comment: Final published version. 61 pages, 10 figures. Star formation is a complex multi-scale phenomenon that is of significant importance for astrophysics in general. Stars and star formation are key pillars in observational astronomy from local star forming regions in the Milky Way up to high-redshift galaxies. From a theoretical perspective, star formation and feedback processes (radiation, winds, and supernovae) play a pivotal role in advancing our understanding of the physical processes at work, both individually and of their interactions. In this review we will give an overview of the main processes that are important for the understanding of star formation. We start with an observationally motivated view on star formation from a global perspective and outline the general paradigm of the life-cycle of molecular clouds, in which star formation is the key process to close the cycle. After that we focus on the thermal and chemical aspects in star forming regions, discuss turbulence and magnetic fields as well as gravitational forces. Star clusters form in dense, hierarchically collapsing gas clouds. Bulk kinetic energy is transformed to turbulence with stars forming from cores fed by filaments. In the most compact regions, stellar feedback is least effective in removing the gas and stars may form very efficiently. These are also the regions where, in high-mass clusters, ejecta from some kind of high-mass stars are effectively captured during the formation phase of some of the low mass stars and effectively channeled into the latter to form multiple populations. Star formation epochs in star clusters are generally set by gas flows that determine the abundance of gas in the cluster. We argue that there is likely only one star formation epoch after which clusters remain essentially clear of gas by cluster winds. Collisional dynamics is important in this phase leading to core collapse, expansion and eventual dispersion of every cluster. Jet precession can reveal the presence of binary systems of supermassive black holes. The ability to accurately measure the parameters of jet precession from radio-loud AGN is important for constraining the binary supermassive black hole population, which are expected as a result of hierarchical galaxy evolution. The age, morphology, and orientation along the line of sight of a given source often result in uncertainties regarding jet path. This paper presents a new approach for efficient determination of precession parameters using a 2D MCMC curve-fitting algorithm which provides us a full posterior probability distribution on the fitted parameters. Applying the method to Cygnus A, we find evidence for previous suggestions that the source is precessing. Context. The diffuse gamma-ray emission of $^{26}{\rm Al}$ at 1.8 MeV reflects ongoing nucleosynthesis in the Milky Way, and traces massive-star feedback in the interstellar medium due to its 1 Myr radioactive lifetime. Interstellar-medium morphology and dynamics are investigated in astrophysics through 3D hydrodynamic simulations in fine detail, as only few suitable astronomical probes are available. Aims. We compare a galactic-scale hydrodynamic simulation of the Galaxy's interstellar medium, including feedback and nucleosynthesis, with gamma-ray data on $^{26}{\rm Al}$ emission in the Milky Way extracting constraints that are only weakly dependent on the particular realisation of the simulation or Galaxy structure. Methods. Due to constraints and biases in both the simulations and the gamma-ray observations, such comparisons are not straightforward. For a direct comparison, we perform maximum likelihood fits of simulated sky maps as well as observation-based maximum entropy maps to measurements with INTEGRAL/SPI. To study general morphological properties, we compare the scale heights of $^{26}{\rm Al}$ emission produced by the simulation to INTEGRAL/SPI measurements.} Results. The direct comparison shows that the simulation describes the observed inner Galaxy well, but differs significantly from the observed full-sky emission morphology. Comparing the scale height distribution, we see similarities for small scale height features and a mismatch at larger scale heights. The annihilation of cosmic positrons ($e^+$) with electrons in the interstellar medium (ISM) results in the strongest persistent gamma-ray line signal in the sky. For 50 years, this 511 keV emission has puzzled observers and theoreticians. A key issue for understanding $e^+$-astrophysics is found in cosmic-ray propagation, especially at low kinetic energies (< 10 MeV). We want to shed light on how $e^+$s propagate and the resulting morphology of the emission. We approach this "positron puzzle" by inferring kinematic information of the 511 keV line in the inner radian of the Galaxy. This constrains propagation scenarios and source populations. By dissecting the 511 keV emission as measured with INTEGRAL/SPI, we derive spectra for individual regions in the sky. The centroid energies are converted into Doppler-shifts, representing the line-of-sight velocity along different longitudes. This results in a longitude-velocity diagram of $e^+$-annihilation. We also determine Doppler-broadenings to study annihilation conditions as they vary across the Galaxy. We find line-of-sight velocities in the 511 keV line that are consistent with zero, as well as with galactic rotation from CO measurements, and measurements of radioactive Al-26. The velocity gradient in the inner 60 deg is determined to be $4\pm6$ km/s/deg. The 511 keV line width is constant as a function of longitude at $2.43\pm0.14$ keV. The positronium fraction is found to be 1.0 along the galactic plane. The weak signals in the disk leave open the question whether $e^+$-annihilation is associated with the high velocities seen in Al-26 or rather with ordinarily rotating components of the Galaxy's ISM. We confirm previous results that $e^+$s are slowed down to the 10 eV energy scale before annihilation, and constrain bulk Doppler-broadening contributions to <1.25 keV. Gaseous halos play a key role for understanding inflow, feedback and the overall baryon budget in galaxies. Literature models predict transitions of the state of the gaseous halo between cold and hot accretion, winds, fountains and hydrostatic halos at certain galaxy masses. Since luminosities of radio AGN are sensitive to halo densities, any significant transition would be expected to show up in the radio luminosities of large samples of galaxies. The Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) Two Metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) has indeed identified a galaxy stellar mass scale, $10^{11} M_\odot$ , above which the radio luminosities increase disproportionately. Here, we investigate, if radio luminosities of galaxies, especially the marked rise at galaxy masses around $10^{11} M_\odot$, can be explained with standard assumptions on jet powers, scaling between black hole-mass and galaxy mass and gaseous halos. We developed models for the radio luminosity of radio AGN in halos under infall, galactic wind and hydrostatic conditions based on observational data and theoretical constraints, and compared it to LoTSS data for a large sample of galaxies in the mass rangebetween $10^{8.5} M_\odot$ and $10^{12} M_\odot$. Assuming the same characteristic upper limit to jet powers as is known from high galaxy masses to hold at all masses, we find that the maximum radio luminosities for the hydrostatic gas halos fit well with the upper envelope of the distribution of the LOFAR data. The marked rise in radio luminosity at $10^{11} M_\odot$ is matched in our model, and is related to significant change in halo gas density around this galaxy mass, which is a consequence of the lower cooling rates at higher virial temperature. Wind and infall models overpredict the radio luminosities at small galaxy masses and have no particular steepening of the run of the radio luminosities predicted at any galaxy mass. The 511 keV line from positron annihilation in the Galaxy was the first $\gamma$-ray line detected to originate from outside our solar system. Going into the fifth decade since the discovery, the source of positrons is still unconfirmed and remains one of the enduring mysteries in $\gamma$-ray astronomy. With a large flux of $\sim$10$^{-3}$ $\gamma$/cm$^{2}$/s, after 15 years in operation INTEGRAL/SPI has detected the 511 keV line at $>50\sigma$ and has performed high-resolution spectral studies which conclude that Galactic positrons predominantly annihilate at low energies in warm phases of the interstellar medium. The results from imaging are less certain, but show a spatial distribution with a strong concentration in the center of the Galaxy. The observed emission from the Galactic disk has low surface brightness and the scale height is poorly constrained, therefore, the shear number of annihilating positrons in our Galaxy is still not well know. Positrons produced in $\beta^+$-decay of nucleosynthesis products, such as $^{26}$Al, can account for some of the annihilation emission in the disk, but the observed spatial distribution, in particular the excess in the Galactic bulge, remains difficult to explain. Additionally, one of the largest uncertainties in these studies is the unknown distance that positrons propagate before annihilation. Supermassive black hole binaries may be detectable by an upcoming suite of gravitational wave experiments. Their binary nature can also be revealed by radio jets via a short-period precession driven by the orbital motion as well as the geodetic precession at typically longer periods. We have investigated Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and MERLIN radio maps of powerful jet sources for morphological evidence of geodetic precession. For perhaps the best studied source, Cygnus A, we find strong evidence for geodetic precession. Projection effects can enhance precession features, for which we find indications in strongly projected sources. For a complete sample of 33 3CR radio sources we find strong evidence for jet precession in 24 cases (73 per cent). The morphology of the radio maps suggests that the precession periods are of the order of 10^6 - 10^7 yr. We consider different explanations for the morphological features and conclude that geodetic precession is the best explanation. The frequently observed gradual jet angle changes in samples of powerful blazars can be explained by orbital motion. Both observations can be explained simultaneously by postulating that a high fraction of powerful radio sources have sub-parsec supermassive black hole binaries. We consider complementary evidence and discuss if any jetted supermassive black hole with some indication of precession could be detected as individual gravitational wave source in the near future. We exploited observational constraints on stars, gas and nucleosynthesis ashes for the closest region of recent massive-star formation, Scorpius-Centaurus OB2, and combined them with 3D hydrodynamical simulations, in order to address physics and history for the case of the Scorpius-Centaurus superbubble. We used published cold gas observations through PLANCK survey data processing, HERSCHEL and APEX, continuum and molecular line observations. We analysed the Galactic All Sky Survey (GASS) to investigate shell structures in atomic hydrogen, and used HIPPARCOS and Gaia data in combination with interstellar absorption against stars to obtain new constraints for the distance to the Hi features. Hot gas is traced in soft X-rays via the ROSAT all sky survey. Nucleosynthesis ejecta from massive stars were traced with new INTEGRAL spectrometer observations via 26Al radioactivity. We also performed 3D hydrodynamical simulations for the Sco-Cen superbubble. To investigate the impact of massive star feedback on extended clouds, we simulate the interaction of a turbulent cloud with the hot, pressurised gas in a superbubble. The hot gas fills the tenuous regions of the cloud and compresses the denser parts. Stars formed in these dense clumps would have distinct spatial and kinematic distributions. The combined results from observations and simulations are consistent with a scenario where dense gas was initially distributed in a band elongated in the direction now occupied by the OB association. Superbubbles powered by massive stars would then repeatedly break out of the elongated parent cloud, surround and squash the denser parts of the gas sheet and thus induce more star formation. The expected spatial and kinematic distribution of stars is consistent with observations of Sco-Cen. Kinetic jet power estimates based exclusively on observed monochromatic radio luminosities are highly uncertain due to confounding variables and a lack of knowledge about some aspects of the physics of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We propose a new methodology to calculate the jet powers of the largest, most powerful radio sources based on combinations of their size, lobe luminosity and shape of their radio spectrum; this approach avoids the uncertainties encountered by previous relationships. The outputs of our model are calibrated using hydrodynamical simulations and tested against independent X-ray inverse-Compton measurements. The jet powers and lobe magnetic field strengths of radio sources are found to be recovered using solely the lobe luminosity and spectral curvature, enabling the intrinsic properties of unresolved high-redshift sources to be inferred. By contrast, the radio source ages cannot be estimated without knowledge of the lobe volumes. The monochromatic lobe luminosity alone is incapable of accurately estimating the jet power or source age without knowledge of the lobe magnetic field strength and size respectively. We find that, on average, the lobes of the 3C radio sources have magnetic field strengths approximately a factor three lower than the equipartition value, inconsistent with equal energy in the particles and the fields at the 5$\sigma$ level. The active galactic nuclei (AGN) lobe radio luminosities modelled in hydrodynamical simulations and most analytical models do not address the redistribution of the electron energies due to adiabatic expansion, synchrotron radiation and inverse-Compton scattering of CMB photons. We present a synchrotron emissivity model for resolved sources which includes a full treatment of the loss mechanisms spatially across the lobe, and apply it to a dynamical radio source model with known pressure and volume expansion rates. The bulk flow and dispersion of discrete electron packets is represented by tracer fields in hydrodynamical simulations; we show that the mixing of different aged electrons strongly effects the spectrum at each point of the radio map in high-powered FR-II sources. The inclusion of this mixing leads to a factor of a few discrepancy between the spectral age measured using impulsive injection models (e.g. JP model) and the dynamical age. The observable properties of radio sources are predicted to be strongly frequency dependent: FR-II lobes are expected to appear more elongated at higher frequencies, while jetted FR-I sources appear less extended. The emerging FR0 class of radio sources, comprising gigahertz peaked and compact steep spectrum sources, can potentially be explained by a population of low-powered FR-Is. The extended emission from such sources is shown to be undetectable for objects within a few orders of magnitude of the survey detection limit and to not contribute to the curvature of the radio SED., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, 1 table; accepted in MNRAS

We model the triggering of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) in galaxy clusters using the semi- analytic galaxy formation model SAGE (?). We prescribe triggering methods based on the ram pressure galaxies experience as they move throughout the intracluster medium, which is hypothesized to trigger star formation and AGN activity. The clustercentric radius and velocity distribution of the simulated active galaxies produced by these models are compared with that of AGN and galaxies with intense star formation from a sample of low-redshift, relaxed clusters from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. The ram pressure triggering model that best explains the clustercentric radius and velocity distribution of these observed galaxies has AGN and star formation triggered if $2.5\times10^{-14} < P_{ram} < 2.5\times10^{-13}$ Pa and $P_{ram} > 2P_{internal}$; this is consistent with expectations from hydrodynamical simulations of ram-pressure induced star formation. Our results show that ram pressure is likely to be an important mechanism for triggering star formation and AGN activity in clusters., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures. The positron annihilation gamma-ray signal in the Milky Way (MW) shows a puzzling morphology: a very bright bulge and a very low surface-brightness disk. A coherent explanation of the positron origin, propagation through the Galaxy and subsequent annihilation in the interstellar medium has not yet been found. Tentative explanations involve positrons from radioactivity, X-ray binaries, and dark matter (DM). Dwarf satellite galaxies (DSGs) are believed to be DM-dominated and hence promising candidates in the search for 511 keV emission as a result of DM annihilation into electron-positron pairs. The goal of this study is to constrain possible 511 keV gamma-ray signals from 39 DSGs of the MW and to test the annihilating DM scenario. We use the spectrometer SPI on INTEGRAL to extract individual spectra for the studied objects. As the diffuse galactic emission dominates the signal, the large scale morphology of the MW has been modelled accordingly and was included in a maximum likelihood analysis. Alternatively, a distance-weighted stacked spectrum has been determined. Only Reticulum II (Ret II) shows a 3.1 sigma signal. Five other sources show tentative 2 sigma signals. The mass-to-511-keV-luminosity-ratio shows a marginal trend towards higher values for intrinsically brighter objects, opposite to the V band mass-to-light-ratio, which is generally used to uncover DM in DSGs. All derived flux values are above the level implied by a DM interpretation of the MW bulge signal. The signal from Ret II is unlikely to be related to a DM origin alone, otherwise, the MW bulge would be about 100 times brighter than what is seen. Ret II is exceptional considering the DSG sample, and rather points to enhanced recent star formation activity, if its origins are similar to processes in the MW. We present results from two suites of simulations of powerful radio galaxies in poor cluster environments, with a focus on the formation and evolution of the radio lobes. One suite of models uses relativistic hydrodynamics and the other relativistic magnetohydrodynamics; both are set up to cover a range of jet powers and velocities. The dynamics of the lobes are shown to be in good agreement with analytical models and with previous numerical models, confirming in the relativistic regime that the observed widths of radio lobes may be explained if they are driven by very light jets. The ratio of energy stored in the radio lobes to that put into the intracluster gas is seen to be the same regardless of jet power, jet velocity or simulation type, suggesting that we have a robust understanding of the work done on the ambient gas by this type of radio source. For the most powerful jets we at times find magnetic field amplification by up to a factor of two in energy, but mostly the magnetic energy in the lobes is consistent with the magnetic energy injected. We confirm our earlier result that for jets with a toroidally injected magnetic field, the field in the lobes is predominantly aligned with the jet axis once the lobes are well developed, and that this leads to radio flux anisotropies of up to a factor of about two for mature sources. Microquasars are stellar-mass black holes accreting matter from a companion star and ejecting plasma jets at almost the speed of light. They are analogues of quasars that contain supermassive black holes of $10^6$ to $10^{10}$ solar masses. Accretion in microquasars varies on much shorter timescales than in quasars and occasionally produces exceptionally bright X-ray flares. How the flares are produced is unclear, as is the mechanism for launching the relativistic jets and their composition. An emission line near 511 kiloelectronvolts has long been sought in the emission spectrum of microquasars as evidence for the expected electron-positron plasma. Transient high-energy spectral features have been reported in two objects, but their positron interpretation remains contentious. Here we report observations of $\gamma$-ray emission from the microquasar V404 Cygni during a recent period of strong flaring activity. The emission spectrum around 511 kiloelectronvolts shows clear signatures of variable positron annihilation, which implies a high rate of positron production. This supports the earlier conjecture that microquasars may be the main sources of the electron-positron plasma responsible for the bright diffuse emission of annihilation $\gamma$-rays in the bulge region of our Galaxy. Gas expulsion is a central concept in some of the models for multiple populations and the light-element anticorrelations in globular clusters. If the star formation efficiency was around 30 per cent and the gas expulsion happened on the crossing timescale, this process could expel preferentially stars born with the chemical composition of the proto-cluster gas, while stars with special composition born in the centre would remain bound. Recently, a sample of extragalactic, gas-free, young massive clusters has been identified that has the potential to test the conditions for gas expulsion. We compute a large number of thin shell models, and calculate if the Rayleigh-Taylor instability is able to disrupt the shell before it reaches the escape speed. We show that the success of gas expulsion depends on the compactness index of a star cluster C5, proportionate to stellar mass over half-mass radius. For given C5, a certain critical, local star formation efficiency is required to remove the rest of the gas. Common stellar feedback processes may not lead to gas expulsion with significant loss of stars above C5 = 1. Considering pulsar winds and hypernovae, the limit increases to C5 = 30. If successful, gas expulsion generally takes place on the crossing timescale. Some observed young massive clusters have 1 < C5 < 10 and are gas-free at 10 Myr. This suggests that gas expulsion does not affect their stellar mass significantly, unless powerful pulsar winds and hypernovae are common in such objects. By comparison to observations, we show that C5 is a better predictor for the expression of multiple populations than stellar mass. The best separation between star clusters with and without multiple populations is achieved by a stellar winds-based gas expulsion model, where gas expulsion would occur exclusively in star clusters without multiple populations., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables, accepted by A&A

The annihilation of positrons in the Galaxy's interstellar medium produces characteristic gamma-rays with a line at 511 keV. This emission has been observed with the spectrometer SPI on INTEGRAL, confirming a puzzling morphology with bright emission from an extended bulge-like region, and faint disk emission. Most plausible sources of positrons are believed to be distributed throughout the disk of the Galaxy. We aim to constrain characteristic spectral shapes for different spatial components in the disk and bulge with the high-resolution gamma-ray spectrometer SPI, based on a new instrumental background method and detailed multi-component sky model fitting. We confirm the detection of the main extended components of characteristic annihilation gamma-ray signatures at 58$\sigma$ significance in the line. The total Galactic line intensity amounts to $(2.7\pm0.3)\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{ph~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$ for our assumed spatial model. We derive spectra for the bulge and disk, and a central point-like and at the position of Sgr A*, and discuss spectral differences. The bulge shows a 511 keV line intensity of $(0.96\pm0.07)\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{ph~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$ and an ortho-positronium continuum equivalent to a positronium fraction of ($1.08\pm0.03$). The 2D-Gaussian representing the disk has an extent of $60^{+10}_{-5}$ deg in longitude and a latitudinal extent of $10.5^{+2.5}_{-1.5}$ deg; the line intensity is $(1.7\pm0.4)\times10^{-3}~\mathrm{ph~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$ with a marginal detection of ortho-positronium and an overall diffuse Galactic continuum of $(5.85\pm1.05)\times10^{-5}~\mathrm{ph~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~keV^{-1}}$ at 511 keV. The disk shows no flux asymmetry between positive and negative longitudes, although spectral details differ. The flux ratio between bulge and disk is ($0.6\pm0.1$). Stellar winds and supernova (SN) explosions of massive stars ("stellar feedback") create bubbles in the interstellar medium (ISM) and insert newly produced heavy elements and kinetic energy into their surroundings, possibly driving turbulence. Most of this energy is thermalized and immediately removed from the ISM by radiative cooling. The rest is available for driving ISM dynamics. In this work we estimate the amount of feedback energy retained as kinetic energy when the bubble walls have decelerated to the sound speed of the ambient medium. We show that the feedback of the most massive star outweighs the feedback from less massive stars. For a giant molecular cloud (GMC) mass of 1e5 solar masses (as e.g. found in the Orion GMCs) and a star formation efficiency of 8% the initial mass function predicts a most massive star of approximately 60 solar masses. For this stellar evolution model we test the dependence of the retained kinetic energy of the cold GMC gas on the inclusion of stellar winds. In our model winds insert 2.34 times the energy of a SN and create stellar wind bubbles serving as pressure reservoirs. We find that during the pressure driven phases of the bubble evolution radiative losses peak near the contact discontinuity (CD), and thus, the retained energy depends critically on the scales of the mixing processes across the CD. The Lupus I cloud is found between the Upper-Scorpius (USco) and the Upper-Centaurus-Lupus (UCL) sub-groups of the Sco-Cen OB-association, where the expanding USco H I shell appears to interact with a bubble currently driven by the winds of the remaining B-stars of UCL.We want to study how collisions of large-scale interstellar gas flows form and influence new dense clouds in the ISM.We performed LABOCA continuum sub-mm observations of Lupus I that provide for the first time a direct view of the densest, coldest cloud clumps and cores at high angular resolution.We complemented those by Herschel and Planck data from which we constructed column density and temperature maps.We calculated PDFs to characterize the density structure of the cloud.The northern part of Lupus I is found to have on average lower densities and higher temperatures as well as no active star formation.The center-south part harbors dozens of pre-stellar cores where density and temperature reach their maximum and minimum, respectively.Our analysis of the column density PDFs from the Herschel data show double peak profiles for all parts of the cloud which we attribute to an external compression.In those parts with active star formation, the PDF shows a power-law tail at high densities.The PDFs we calculated from our LABOCA data trace the denser parts of the cloud showing one peak and a power-law tail.With LABOCA we find 15 cores with masses between 0.07 and 1.71 Msun and a total mass of ~8 Msun.The total gas and dust mass of the cloud is ~164 Msun and hence 5% of the mass is in cores.From the Herschel and Planck data we find a total mass of ~174 Msun and ~171 Msun, respectively.The position, orientation and elongated shape of Lupus I, the double peak PDFs and the population of pre-stellar and protostellar cores could be explained by the large-scale compression from the advancing USco H I shell and the UCL wind bubble., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 14 pages, 8 figures

The 340-year old supernova remnant Cassiopeia A at 3.4 kpc distance is the best-studied young core-collapse supernova remnant. Nucleosynthesis yields in radioactive isotopes have been studied with different methods, in particular for production and ejection of $^{44}$Ti and $^{56}$Ni which originate from the innermost regions of the supernova. $^{44}$Ti was first discovered in this remnant, but is not seen consistently in other core-collapse sources. We analyse the observations accumulated with the SPI spectrometer on INTEGRAL, together with an improved instrumental background method, to achieve high spectroscopic resolution which enables interpretation towards a velocity constraint on $^{44}$Ti ejecta from the 1.157 MeV $\gamma$-ray line of the $^{44}$Sc decay. We observe both the hard X-ray line at 78 keV and the $\gamma$-ray line at 1157 keV from the $^{44}$Ti decay chain, at a combined significance of 3.8 $\sigma$. Measured fluxes are $(2.1\pm0.4)~10^{-5}~\mathrm{ph~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$ and $(3.5\pm1.2)~10^{-5}~\mathrm{ph~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}}$, which corresponds to $(1.5\pm0.4)~10^{-4}$ and $(2.4\pm0.9)~10^{-4}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ of $^{44}$Ti, respectively. The measured Doppler broadening of the lines implies expansion velocities of $4300$ and $2200~\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$, respectively. Combining our results with previous studies, we determine a more precise estimate of ejected $^{44}$Ti of $(1.37\pm0.19)~10^{-4}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$. The measurements of both lines are consistent with previous studies. The flux in the line originating from excited $^{44}$Ca is significantly higher than the flux determined in the lines from $^{44}$Sc. High energy resolution spectroscopy of the 1.8 MeV radioactive decay line of 26Al with the SPI instrument on board the INTEGRAL satellite has recently revealed that diffuse 26Al has large velocities in comparison to other components of the interstellar medium in the Milky Way. 26Al shows Galactic rotation in the same sense as the stars and other gas tracers, but reaches excess velocities up to 300 km/s. We investigate if this result can be understood in the context of superbubbles, taking into account the statistics of young star clusters and H I supershells, as well as the association of young star clusters with spiral arms. We derive energy output and 26Al mass of star clusters as a function of the cluster mass via population synthesis from stellar evolutionary tracks of massive stars. [...] We link this to the size distribution of HI supershells and assess the properties of likely 26Al-carrying superbubbles. 26Al is produced by star clusters of all masses above about 200 solar masses, roughly equally contributed over a logarithmic star cluster mass scale, and strongly linked to the injection of feedback energy. The observed superbubble size distribution cannot be related to the star cluster mass function in a straight forward manner. In order to avoid that the added volume of all superbubbles exceeds the volume of the Milky Way, individual superbubbles have to merge frequently. If any two superbubbles merge, or if 26Al is injected off-centre in a bigger HI supershell we expect the hot 26Al-carrying gas to obtain velocities of the order of the typical sound speed in superbubbles, about 300 km/s before decay. Superbubbles are crucial for stellar feedback, with supposedly high (of the order of 10 per cent) thermalization rates. We combined multiband radio continuum observations from the Very Large Array (VLA) with Effelsberg data to study the non-thermal superbubble (NSB) in IC 10, a starburst dwarf irregular galaxy in the Local Group. Thermal emission was subtracted using a combination of Balmer H$\alpha$ and VLA 32 GHz continuum maps. The bubble's non-thermal spectrum between 1.5 and 8.8 GHz displays curvature and can be well fitted with a standard model of an ageing cosmic ray electron population. With a derived equipartition magnetic field strength of $44\pm 8 \rm\mu G$, and measuring the radiation energy density from Spitzer MIPS maps as $5\pm 1\times 10^{-11} \rm erg\, cm^{-3}$, we determine, based on the spectral curvature, a spectral age of the bubble of $1.0\pm 0.3 \rm Myr$. Analysis of the LITTLE THINGS HI data cube shows an expanding HI hole with 100 pc diameter and a dynamical age of $3.8\pm 0.3 \rm Myr$, centred to within 16 pc on IC 10 X-1, a massive stellar mass black hole ($M > 23 M_\odot$). The results are consistent with the expected evolution for a superbubble with a few massive stars, where a very energetic event like a Type Ic supernova/hypernova has taken place about 1 Myr ago. Interstellar bubbles appear to be smaller in observations than expected from calculations. Instabilities at the shell boundaries create three-dimensional ef- fects, and are probably responsible for part of this discrepancy. We investigate instabilities and dynamics in superbubbles by 3D hydrodynamics simulations with time-resolved energy input from massive stars, including the supernova explosions. We find that the superbubble shells are accelerated by supernova explosions, coincident with substantial brightening in soft X-ray emission. In between the explosions, the superbubbles lose energy efficiently, approaching the momentum-conserving snowplow limit. This and enhanced radiative losses due to instabilities reduce the expansion compared to the corresponding radiative bubbles in pressure-driven snowplow models with constant energy input. We note generally good agreement with observations of superbubbles and some open issues. Jets are observed to stir up multi-phase turbulence in the inter-stellar medium as well as far beyond the host galaxy. Here we present detailed simulations of this process. We evolve the hydrodynamics equations with optically thin cooling for a 3D Kelvin Helmholtz setup with one initial cold cloud. The cloud is quickly disrupted, but the fragments remain cold and are spread throughout our simulation box. A scale free isotropic Kolmogorov power spectrum is built up first on the large scales, and reaches almost down to the grid scale after the simulation time of ten million years. We find a pronounced peak in the temperature distribution at 14,000K. The luminosity of the gas in this peak is correlated with the energy. We interpret this as a realisation of the shock ionisation scenario. The interplay between shock heating and radiative cooling establishes the equilibrium temperature. This is close to the observed emission in some Narrow Line Regions. We also confirm the shift of the phase equilibrium, i.e. a lower (higher) level of turbulence produces a higher (lower) abundance of cold gas. In a parameter study extending to jet densities of $10^{-5}$ times the ambient one, I have recently shown that light large scale jets start their lives in a spherical bow shock phase. This allows an easy description of the sideways bow shock propagation in that phase. Here, I present new, bipolar, simulations of very light jets in 2.5D and 3D, reaching the observationally relevant scale of $>200$ jet radii. Deviations from the early bow shock propagation law are expected because of various effects. The net effect is, however, shown to remain small. I calculate the X-ray appearance of the shocked cluster gas and compare it to Cygnus A and 3C 317. We report two simulations that have been carried out at the SX-5 at HLRS (Stuttgart). One simulation is axisymmetric and purely hydrodynamic, but with a resolution of 20 points per beam-radius (ppb). The bipolar jet is injected in the center of a spherically symmetric King profile, initially underdense to its environment by a factor of 10,000. As expected from our previous work, the jet starts with producing a spherical bubble around it, bounded by the bow shock. The bubble slowly elongates, first with roughly elliptical shape, and then forms narrower extensions in beam direction. The final aspect ratio of the bow shock is 1.8. We have transformed the results on a 3D-rectangular grid and integrated the emission properties to compare the results with observed central cluster radio galaxies. In the particular case of Cygnus A, we come to convincing consistency, morphologically, regarding the size of the influenced region by the jet, size, and cylindrical shape of the radio cocoon, and source age. This strongly supports our earlier hypothesis on the nature of the jet in Cygnus A, and the derived constraints on other jet parameters like a power of $8 \times 10^{46}$ erg/s and an age of 27 Myr. But, the simulation also clearly shows the shortcoming of the model: The jet's beam is very unstable, reaching the tip of the bow shock only very seldom. Also, the contact discontinuity between shocked beam plasma and shocked ambient gas is quite disrupted by the action of the Kelvin-Helmholtz-instability. This is not seen in observations, and necessitates the presence of dynamically important magnetic fields or an at least moderately relativistic flow, or both.
