Klimaneutrales Wirtschaften ist angesichts des immer deutlicher wahrnehmbaren und anthropogen bedingten Klimawandels eine gesellschaftliche Notwendigkeit, die von allen Wirtschaftsbereichen erbracht werden muss. Dieser Notwendigkeit muss sich auch die Landwirtschaft, und insbesondere die auf Nachhaltigkeit fokussierte biologische Landwirtschaft stellen. Dabei wird Klimaneutralität im Sinne eines „Net Zero bzw. Net Zero Carbon Emission“ wie folgt definiert und erreicht: Für ein Betrieb, Produkt, Unternehmen oder Wirtschaftsbereich werden zunächst alle Treibhausgas (THG)-Emissionen – in der Regel Methan (CH4), Lachgas (N2O) und Kohlenstoffdioxid (CO2) – gemessen oder berechnet und zu einem CO2-Fussabdruck kombiniert. Um die Net Zero Emission zu erreichen stehen nun drei Stellschrauben zur Verfügung: 1. Maximale Reduktion der THG Emissionen; 2. Kompensation der unvermeidlichen THG-Emissionen durch dauerhafte C-Speicherung (Sequestrierung) im eigenen Wirkungsbereich; und 3. Kompensation der unvermeidlichen THG-Emissionen an anderer Stelle. Ziel der vorliegenden Vorstudie war es, erstmals gesondert für den biologischen Landbau in der Schweiz den CO2-Fussabdruck dieses Wirtschaftsbereiches abzuschätzen und die Möglichkeit der Erreichung des Net Zero Zustands zu bewerten. Dazu haben wir in einer Literaturanalyse den Stand des Wissens zu Wirksamkeit und Umsetzbarkeit von THG-Reduktionsstrategien für im Bereich der biologischen Landwirtschaft zusammengestellt.

D’une part, ses émissions de gaz à effet de serre contribuent au réchauffement mondial; d’autre part, elle dispose d’un fort potentiel d’atténuation du changement climatique. Cette fiche d’information met en exergue le rôle multifactoriel de l’agriculture dans le changement climatique et présente différentes connaissances scientifiques mettant en évidence le potentiel d’atténuation du changement climatique de l’agriculture biologique.

Schon heute hat der Biolandbau die besseren Strategien, um sich an den Klimawandel anzupassen. Doch Hans-Martin Krause mahnt auch, dass die ökologische Landwirtschaft noch nicht so weit ist, um die Herausforderungen der Ernährungssicherung der nächsten Jahre stemmen zu können.

Forty years of research in the DOK trial resulted in more than 120 peer-reviewed publications investigating effects of farming systems on a wide range of scientific disciplines within agronomic and environmental research. It is the oldest still existing system comparison trial comparing organic and conventional agricultural practice worldwide. The field trial has been subject to applied and fundamental research but the presentation of findings from the DOK trial is beyond the scope of this chapter. Instead, we give detailed insights into the history of implementation of the DOK trial and show how the evolution of agricultural practices influenced the management practices applied in the experiment. From a scientific point of view, changing experimental treatments in the course of an experiment is a challenging task. Yet, following a system approach and the development of organic and conventional farming necessitate a periodical reevaluation of practices implemented within the treatments to mirror changes in large-scale farming. To reflect on these developments and to present in-depth insight on the history of management of the DOK trial, we review and discuss changes implemented in management practice during the course of the last 40 years.

Die Landwirtschaft spielt im Klimawandel eine bedeutende Rolle. Als Verursacherin von Klimagasen trägt sie einerseits zur globalen Erwärmung bei, verfügt aber andererseits auch über ein grosses Potenzial zur Minderung des Klimawandels. In diesem Faktenblatt wird die vielseitige Rolle der Landwirtschaft im Klimawandel näher beleuchtet. Dabei werden verschiedene wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse dargestellt, die das Potenzial des Biolandbaus zur Minderung des Klimawandels zeigen.

Background Nitrogen (N) fertilizers are essential for crop production. Farmyard manure and slurry traditionally constitute about half of the total N inputs into crop production in Switzerland. Recycled fertilizers such as biogas slurry, liquid digestates and compost enable simultaneous energy production and closing of nutrient cycles. There is evidence that recycled fertilizers can help to increase N use efficiencies and to improve N supply in organic farming. Biochar amendment has shown a potential to mitigate soil greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, in particular nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Here, we combine one of the liquid recycled fertilizer treatments with biochar. In a 2.5-years on-farm experiment, we quantify GHG emissions and further gaseous N-losses via ammonia (NH3) emissions.

Are organic farming systems more climate friendly and climate resilient than conventional ones? And does this make them suitable to maintain global food security in changing climate conditions? Our authors believe that this is the case. However, they say that in assessing mitigation and adaptation potential, one should not only look at production aspects, and make a case for a food systems perspective.

Le eccedenze di azoto sono le principali responsabili delle emissioni di gas esilarante (N2O) dannose per il clima, delle quali è responsabile l’agricoltura. Queste emissioni possono però essere nettamente ridotte introducendo nel suolo carbone vegetale.

Nach der Zugabe von Pflanzenkohle in Ackerboden konnte ein überproportionaler Anstieg an spezialisierten Mikroorganismen, die N2O abbauen, beobachtet werden.

Farming practices are known to exert strong control over the soils’ function to act as sources or sinks for greenhouse gases (GHG). This paper deals with the outcome of a recent meta-analysis based on the evaluation of 19 published long-term farming system comparisons. It provides a comprehensive data base regarding GHG fluxes from soils under organic and non-organic management. There is scientific evidence for lower nitrous oxide emissions from organically managed soils when scaled to the area. However, further data from farming system comparisons are required, particularly from long-term GHG measurements covering several cropping seasons or ideally entire crop rotations. This enables closing knowledge gaps concerning N fluxes and pools under organic management as well as the formation of the new soil ecosystem (soil quality) equilibrium after implementing organic practices. Substantial reductions of nitrous oxide emissions as well as enhancement of methane uptake can be reached by consequent application of “good agricultural practice” and simple adoptions of soil management, forming together a balanced set of GHG mitigation mechanisms. In addition we provide first GHG flux data from the well-known DOK farming system trial in Therwil/CH and the role of microbial communities driving soil functioning.

Die Schweizer Landwirtschaft verursacht 11,2 Prozent* der gesamten Treibhausgasemissionen, wobei Methan (CH4) aus der Fermentation in Wiederkäuermägen 45 Prozent und Lachgas (N20) aus den Böden 38 Prozent der landwirtschaftlichen Emissionen ausmachen. Die Lachgasemissionen aus gedüngten Böden sind daher von Bedeutung und eine Reduktion durch ein angepasstes Management absolut notwendig.
