The Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) project fosters an enhanced, public understanding of the human presence on Earth. A decade after its inception in the Digital Earth 2020 vision, GHSL is an established project of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre and an integral part of the Copernicus Emergency Management Service. The 2023 GHSL edition, a result of rigorous research on Earth Observation data and population censuses, contributes significantly to understanding worldwide human settlements. It introduces new elements like 10-m-resolution, sub-pixel estimation of built-up surfaces, global building height and volume estimates, and a classification of residential and non-residential areas, improving population density grids. This paper evaluates the key components of the GHSL, including the Symbolic Machine Learning approach, using novel reference data. These data enable a comparative assessment of GHSL model predictions on the evolution of built-up surface, building heights, and resident population. Empirical evidence suggests that GHSL estimates are the most accurate in the public domain today, e.g. achieving an IoU of 0.98 for the water class, 0.92 for the built-up class, and 0.8 for the non-residential class at 10 m resolution. At 100 m resolution, we find that the MAE of built-up surface estimates corresponds to 6% of the grid cell area, the MAE for the building height estimates is 2.27 m, and we find a total allocation accuracy of 83% for resident population. This paper consolidates the theoretical foundation of the GHSL and highlights its innovative features for transparent Artificial Intelligence, facilitating international decision-making processes.

Objectives Emotions and stress affect voice production. There are only a few reports in the literature on how changes in the autonomic nervous system affect voice production. The aim of this study was to examine emotions and measure stress reactions during a voice examination procedure, particularly changes in the muscles surrounding the larynx. Material and Methods The study material included 50 healthy volunteers (26 voice workers – opera singers, 24 control subjects), all without vocal complaints. All subjects had good voice quality in a perceptual assessment. The research procedure consisted of 4 parts: an ear, nose, and throat (ENT)‑phoniatric examination, surface electromyography, recording physiological indicators (heart rate and skin resistance) using a wearable wristband, and a psychological profile based on questionnaires. Results The results of the study demonstrated that there was a relationship between positive and negative emotions and stress reactions related to the voice examination procedure, as well as to the tone of the vocal tract muscles. There were significant correlations between measures describing the intensity of experienced emotions and vocal tract muscle maximum amplitude of the cricothyroid (CT) and sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles during phonation and non-phonation tasks. Subjects experiencing eustress (favorable stress response) had increased amplitude of submandibular and CT at rest and phonation. Subjects with high levels of negative emotions, revealed positive correlations with SCM max during the glissando. The perception of positive and negative emotions caused different responses not only in the vocal tract but also in the vegetative system. Correlations were found between emotions and physiological parameters, most markedly in heart rate variability. A higher incidence of extreme emotions was observed in the professional group. Conclusions The activity of the vocal tract muscles depends on the type and intensity of the emotions and stress reactions. Background: Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) is characterized by its ability to enter a dormant state within the body. When the wild or vaccine virus reactivates, it can lead to herpes zoster (HZ), which infrequently manifests as a neuroinfection. Objectives: The aim of the study was to analyze the clinical manifestations and outcomes associated with VZV reactivation in the CNS in immunocompetent children. Methods: We searched medical databases for case reports using the keywords “zoster”, “meningitis”, “encephalitis”, and “immunocompetent”. The inclusion criteria were age below 18 years, any gender, race, and ethnicity, no features or history of immunodeficiency, and confirmation of VZV reactivation through the detection of VZV DNA in the CSF. Patients were categorized into two groups: children experiencing the reactivation of the wild virus and children with the vaccine strain virus. Results: The cohort included six children hospitalized in our hospital and 49 children reported in the literature. In 37 (67%), a wild-type virus was detected, while in 18 (33%), an infection was caused by the vaccine strain. There were no differences in the clinical presentation between the two groups. A typical rash was observed in 32 (58%) children. Approximately 41 of the 55 children (75%) received antiviral treatment. Four patients experienced complications. Conclusions: Neither a history of VZV immunization nor the absence of a skin rash can definitively exclude VZV meningitis. It is important to note that any seemingly healthy child, regardless of recognized risk factors, could develop HZ meningitis.

Introduction and objective Anti-HLA antibodies, especially anti-DSA, are believed to be potentially involved in acute and chronic rejection. New techniques, e.g. flow fluorimetry, can be an excellent supplement to the lymphocytotoxic tests currently used in pre-transplantation practice, and become a tool for monitoring post-transplant immunisation. The aim of the study was to assess the level of cytokines and alloimmunisation in kidney recipients, with the histopathological evaluation of the transplanted kidney biopsy. Material and methods The study included 62 graft recipients six months after transplant. The level of anti-HLA antibodies was assessed using the x-Map Luminex technique, and the level of cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-10, IL-17) was determined using the ELISA test. Results Histopathological analysis showed that more than 45.2% of patients had changes in the biopsy material. Analysis of the level of alloimmunisation showed that in over 75.8%, the presence was detected of anti-HLA IgM class I antibodies, while anti-HLA IgM class II antibodies were found less often –17.8%. The level of anti-HLA IgG antibodies, depending on the type of the assessed class, respectively, was: class I – 43.5% and class II – 50%. More than half of the subjects also had anti-MICA antibodies. The level of analysed cytokines was low. Conclusions The results indicate significant alloimmunisation of kidney recipients, although they do not answer the question whether these are antibodies that appeared de novo after transplantation, and whether anti-DSA antibodies were present among them. For this purpose, the diagnostics should be expanded to include anti-HLA monitoring in the pre- and post-transplant period, using screening tests and tests to identify their specificity. The protocol biopsy and examination of level cytokine can also be a helpful tool in post-transplant diagnosis.

It is often assumed that highlighting the contributions of female researchers to STEM fields may make those fields more attractive to women, thereby encouraging female participation. The present study (n = 802) aimed to test that assumption by investigating the impact of messages highlighting the contributions of women researchers to two STEM fields, (mathematics and biology) on the perception of those fields among high school students and comparing it to the impact of analogous messages concerning three nonSTEM fields. We found that these messages did not encourage women to participate in the respective academic fields, in STEM or otherwise. And more strongly they led both women and men to see that academic field as less interesting and worthy of study. We propose that the effect observed here, and previously not discussed in the literature, is the reverse of the well‐known Matilda effect. If the Matilda effect consists in a tendency to ignore or downplay the academic contributions of women based on the assumption that only men can contribute real value to research, then what we observed in our study is that that same assumption apparently makes people think that if women excel in certain fields, then those fields must be less valuable than others. We also argue that these effects are the result of gender stereotyping that takes what are supposedly male characteristics as better suited for research work than what are supposedly female characteristics. Introduction: Over the past few years, attention has been paid to the coexistence of dysphonia with dysphagia, in the context of functional disorders. The aim of this work was to objectify logopaedic examination of dysphonic patients with coexisting swallowing difficulties by surface electromyography. Methods: The material of the work included 58 patients with muscle tension dysphonia (MTD). Each patient underwent otolaryngologic, phoniatric and logopaedic examination. We collected information about medical history and asked patients to fill out Reflux Symptom Index (RSI), Eating Assessment Tool (EAT-10), Dysphagia Handicap Index (DHI) and Swallowing Disorder Scale (SDS). The algorithm of dysphagia diagnostics in our clinic assumes parallel surface electromyography (SEMG) during Functional Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing. Results: In comparison to patients suffering from atypical swallowing, patients with muscle tension dysphagia (MTDg) obtained higher values from almost all questionnaires. Logopaedic evaluation revealed abnormalities in the structure and efficiency of the articulatory organs and in the assessment of primary functions. Patients with more abnormalities in logopaedic examination had significantly higher infrahyoid muscle activity during swallowing observed in EMG. Patients with non-normative swallowing pattern had significantly greater asymmetry of the average and maximum amplitude of masseters, as well as submental muscles. Patients with higher percent of muscles asymmetry gained higher scores in questionnaires. Conclusions: Surface electromyography objectifies logopaedic examination of patients with swallowing difficulties. The results of this work showed that, apart from longer swallows, patients with MTDg differ from patients with non-normative swallowing patterns in the muscle activity measured by SEMG, abnormalities in logopaedic evaluation and the severity of complaints reported by patients.

Neutropenia, congenital or acquired, is related to impaired granulocyte production in the bone marrow or increased destruction by antibodies. Autoimmune neutropenia of infancy (AIN) is associated with the occurrence of antineutrophil antibodies. AIN is the most common cause of neutropenia in infants and young children. However, its incidence is low. Detection of anti-neutrophil antibodies is an important step in confirming the diagnosis of AIN, although their detection is difficult due to low titer and poor avidity. In differential diagnosis, another cause of neutropenia should be considered, such as a drug-induced mechanism, viral infection, autoimmune and metabolic disease, hematological conditions or immune deficiency syndromes. Despite the benign course of AIN, serious infectious complications can occur. Spontaneous remission of neutropenia was observed in 95% of patients during 24 months of follow-up. We present a case of a 10-month-old boy with deafness, heart defect and Morgagni-Larrey hernia diagnosed in our department because of formation of a skin abscess due to autoimmune neutropenia.

Introduction: Electromyography (EMG) of the larynx provides information on the electrophysiological condition of laryngeal muscles and innervation. Integration of information obtained from the EMG exams with the clinical parameters as obtained by other methods for laryngeal assessment (endoscopy, perceptual and acoustic analysis, voice self-assessment) provides a multidimensional picture of dysphonia, which is of particular importance in patients with vocal fold (VF) mobility disorders accompanied by glottic insufficiency. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate laryngeal EMG records acquired in subjects with unilateral vocal fold immobilization with signs of atrophy and glottic insufficiency. Material and methods: From the available material of 74 EMG records of patients referred for the exam due to unilateral laryngeal paralysis, records of 17 patients with endoscopic features suggestive of complete laryngeal muscle denervation were selected. The EMG study of thyroarytenoid muscles of mobile and immobile VFs was evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively at rest and during volitional activity involving free phonation of vowel /e/ [ε]. Results: In all patients, the EMG records from mobile VFs were significantly different from those from immobile VFs. Despite endoscopic features of paralysis, no VF activity whatsoever was observed in as few as 2 patients so as to meet the neurophysiological definition of paralysis. In 88% of cases, electromyographic activity of the thyroarytenoid muscle was observed despite immobilization and atrophy of the vocal fold. In these patients, neurogenic type of record was observed with numerous high--amplitude mobility units. On the basis of the results, quantitative features of EMG records indicative of paralysis and residual activity of the thyroarytenoid muscle were determined. Conclusions: Qualitative and quantitative analysis of laryngeal EMG records provides detailed information on the condition of vocal fold muscles and innervation. EMG records of mobile vs immobile VFs differ significantly from each other. Endoscopic evaluation does not provide sufficient basis for the diagnosis of complete laryngeal muscle denervation.
