The urgency to address skeletal abnormalities and diseases through innovative approaches has led to a significant interdisciplinary convergence of engineering, 3D printing, and design in developing individualised bioceramic bioscaffolds. This review explores into the recent advancements and future trajectory of non-antibiotic antibacterial bioceramics in bone tissue engineering, an importance given the escalating challenges of orthopaedic infections, antibiotic resistance, and emergent pathogens. Initially, the review provides an in-depth exploration of the complex interactions among bacteria, immune cells, and bioceramics in clinical contexts, highlighting the multifaceted nature of infection dynamics, including protein adsorption, immunological responses, bacterial adherence, and endotoxin release. Then, focus on the next-generation bioceramics designed to offer multifunctionality, especially in delivering antibacterial properties independent of traditional antibiotics. A key highlight of this study is the exploration of smart antibacterial bioceramics, marking a revolutionary stride in medical implant technology. The review also aims to guide the ongoing development and clinical adoption of bioceramic materials, focusing on their dual capabilities in promoting bone regeneration and exhibiting antibacterial properties. These next-generation bioceramics represent a paradigm shift in medical implant technology, offering multifunctional benefits that transcend traditional approaches.

Abstract Surgical site infections (SSI) are major post‐operative complications following surgery. Reducing SSI is a global urgency as they account for huge pecuniary, physiological, and emotional burdens for patients. Antibiotic resistance is the main challenge for surgeons dealing with SSIs. Aggregation‐induced emission photosensitisers (AIE PS) with their distinct optical characteristics, biocompatibility, low toxicity, and target specificity, hold the potential for the treatment of SSI. Herein, a synergetic strategy combining plasma polymerization and AIE PS is adopted to develop coatings that can eradicate SSI‐causing bacteria. These coatings can preferentially kill Gram‐negative and Gram‐positive bacteria over mammalian cells after triggered by light irradiation. The cell viability and immunostaining studies confirmed their biocompatibility on mammalian cells. The antibacterial mechanistic studies explored their ability to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), which is crucial for overcoming antibiotic resistance. Thus, this study opens an avenue toward antibacterial coatings to decrease the prevalence of SSI.

Abstract Bacterial colonization of implantable biomaterials is an ever-pervasive threat that causes devastating infections, yet continues to elude resolution. In the present study, we report how a rationally designed antibacterial surface containing sharp nanospikes can enhance the susceptibility of pathogenic bacteria to antibiotics used in prophylactic procedures. We show that Staphylococcus aureus, once adhered to a titanium surface, changes its cell-surface charge to increase its tolerance to vancomycin. However, if the Ti surface is modified to bear sharp nanospikes, the activity of vancomycin is rejuvenated, leading to increased bacterial cell death through synergistic activity. Analysis of differential gene expression provided evidence of a set of genes involved with the modification of cell surface charge. Synchrotron-sourced attenuated Fourier-transform infrared microspectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), together with multivariate analysis, was utilized to further elucidate the biochemical changes of S. aureus adhered to nanospikes. By inhibiting the ability of the pathogen to reduce its net negative charge, the nanoengineered surface renders S. aureus more susceptible to positively charged antimicrobials such as vancomycin. This finding highlights the opportunity to enhance the potency of prophylactic antibiotic treatments during implant placement surgery by employing devices having surfaces modified with spike-like nanostructures.

Chronic wounds often result in multiple infections with various kinds of bacteria and uncontrolled wound exudate, resulting in several healthcare issues. Advanced medicated nanofibres prepared by electrospinning have gained much attention for their topical application on infected chronic wounds. The objective of this work is to enhance the critical variables of ciprofloxacin-loaded polycaprolactone-silk sericin (PCL/SS-PVA-CIP) nanofibre production via the process of electrospinning. To examine the antibacterial effectiveness of PCL/SS-PVA-CIP nanocomposites, the material was tested against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus. The combination of PCL/SS-PVA-CIP exhibited potent inhibitory properties, with the most effective concentrations of ciprofloxacin (CIP) being 3 μg/g and 7.0 μg/g for each bacterium, respectively. The biocompatibility was evaluated by conducting cell reduction and proliferation studies using the human epidermal keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells and human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs) in vitro cell lines. The PCL/SS-PVA-CIP showed good cell compatibility with HaCaT and HGF cells, with effective proliferation even at antibiotic doses of up to 7.0 μg/g. The drug release effectiveness of the nanocomposites was assessed at various concentrations of CIP, resulting in a maximum cumulative release of 76.5% and 74.4% after 72 h for CIP concentrations of 3 μg/g and 7 μg/g, respectively. In summary, our study emphasizes the possibility of combining silk sericin (SS) and polycaprolactone (PCL) loading with CIP nanocomposite for wound management.

Nanomechanical testing plays a crucial role in evaluating surfaces containing nanoparticles. Testing verifies surface performance concerning their intended function and detects any potential shortcomings in operational standards. Recognising that nanostructured surfaces are not always straightforward or uniform is essential. The chemical composition and morphology of these surfaces determine the end-point functionality. This can entail a layered surface using materials in contrast to each other that may require further modification after nanomechanical testing to pass performance and quality standards. Nanomechanical analysis of a structured surface consisting of a poly-methyl oxazoline film base functionalised with colloidal gold nanoparticles was demonstrated using an atomic force microscope (AFM). AFM nanomechanical testing investigated the overall substrate architecture’s topographical, friction, adhesion, and wear parameters. Limitations towards its potential operation as a biomaterial were also addressed. This was demonstrated by using the AFM cantilever to apply various forces and break the bonds between the polymer film and gold nanoparticles. The AFM instrument offers an insight to the behaviour of low-modulus surface against a higher-modulus nanoparticle. This paper details the bonding and reaction limitations between these materials on the application of an externally applied force. The application of this interaction is highly scrutinised to highlight the potential limitations of a functionalised surface. These findings highlight the importance of conducting comprehensive nanomechanical testing to address concerns related to fabricating intricate biomaterial surfaces featuring nanostructures.

With the rising demand for medical implants and the dominance of implant-associated failures including infections, extensive research has been prompted into the development of novel biomaterials that can offer desirable characteristics. This study develops and evaluates new titanium-based alloys containing gallium additions with the aim of offering beneficial antibacterial properties while having a reduced stiffness level to minimise the effect of stress shielding when in contact with bone. The focus is on the microstructure, mechanical properties, antimicrobial activity, and cytocompatibility to inform the suitability of the designed alloys as biometals. Novel Ti-33Nb-xGa alloys (x = 3, 5 wt%) were produced via casting followed by homogenisation treatment, where all results were compared to the currently employed alloy Ti-6Al-4V. Optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) results depicted a single beta (β) phase microstructure in both Ga-containing alloys, where Ti-33Nb-5Ga was also dominated by dendritic alpha (α) phase grains in a β-phase matrix. EDS analysis indicated that the α-phase dendrites in Ti-33Nb-5Ga were enriched with titanium, while the β-phase was richer in niobium and gallium elements. Mechanical properties were measured using nanoindentation and microhardness methods, where the Young’s modulus for Ti-33Nb-3Ga and Ti-33Nb-5Ga was found to be 75.4 ± 2.4 and 67.2 ± 1.6 GPa, respectively, a significant reduction of 37% and 44% with respect to Ti-6Al-4V. This reduction helps address the disproportionate Young’s modulus between titanium implant components and cortical bone. Importantly, both alloys successfully achieved superior antimicrobial properties against Gram-negative P. aeruginosa and Gram-positive S. aureus bacteria. Antibacterial efficacy was noted at up to 90 ± 5% for the 3 wt% alloy and 95 ± 3% for the 5 wt% alloy. These findings signify a substantial enhancement of the antimicrobial performance when compared to Ti-6Al-4V which exhibited very small rates (up to 6.3 ± 1.5%). No cytotoxicity was observed in hGF cell lines over 24 h. Cell morphology and cytoskeleton distribution appeared to depict typical morphology with a prominent nucleus, elongated fibroblastic spindle-shaped morphology, and F-actin filamentous stress fibres in a well-defined structure of parallel bundles along the cellular axis. The developed alloys in this work have shown very promising results and are suggested to be further examined towards the use of orthopaedic implant components.

Abstract Prolonged and incurable bacterial infections in soft tissue and bone are currently causing large challenges in the clinic. Two-dimensional (2D) materials have been designed to address these issues, but materials with satisfying therapeutic effects are still needed. Herein, CaO2-loaded 2D titanium carbide nanosheets (CaO2-TiOx@Ti3C2, C-T@Ti3C2) were developed. Surprisingly, this nanosheet exhibited sonodynamic ability, in which CaO2 caused the in situ oxidation of Ti3C2 MXene to produce acoustic sensitiser TiO2 on its surface. In addition, this nanosheet displayed chemodynamic features, which promoted a Fenton reaction triggered by self-supplied H2O2. We detected that C-T@Ti3C2 nanosheets increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in response to sonodynamic therapy, which displayed an ideal antibacterial effect. Furthermore, these nanoreactors facilitated the deposition of Ca2+, which promoted osteogenic transformation and enhanced bone quality in osteomyelitis models. Herein, a wound healing model and prosthetic joint infection (PJI) model were established, and the C-T@Ti3C2 nanosheets played a protective role in these models. Taken together, the results indicated that the C-T@Ti3C2 nanosheets function as a multifunctional instrument with sonodynamic features, which might reveal information regarding the treatment of bacterial infections during wound healing. Stem cell transplantation has been proved a promising therapeutic instrument in intervertebral disc degeneration (IVDD). However, the elevation of oxidative stress in the degenerated region impairs the efficiency of mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) transplantation treatment via exaggeration of mitochondrial ROS and promotion of BMSCs apoptosis. Herein, we applied an emulsion-confined assembly method to encapsulate Coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10), a promising hydrophobic antioxidant which targets mitochondria ROS, into the lecithin micelles, which renders the insoluble Co-Q10 dispersible in water as stable colloids. These micelles are injectable, which displayed efficient ability to facilitate Co-Q10 to get into BMSCs in vitro, and exhibited prolonged release of Co-Q10 in intervertebral disc tissue of animal models. Compared to mere use of Co-Q10, the Co-Q10 loaded micelle possessed better bioactivities, which elevated the viability, restored mitochondrial structure as well as function, and enhanced production of ECM components in rat BMSCs. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the injection of this micelle with BMSCs retained disc height and alleviated IVDD in a rat needle puncture model. Therefore, these Co-Q10 loaded micelles play a protective role in cell survival and differentiation through antagonizing mitochondrial ROS, and might be a potential therapeutic agent for IVDD.

Macrophage polarization is a significant event in the host immune response, which can be modulated by modifying the surface of a biomaterial. Previous studies have demonstrated the modulation of macrophage polarization using different surface features; however, none of these studies reflect the effect of surface properties on unstimulated macrophage polarization for a prolonged period. To better understand the impact of surface features, in this work differentiated THP‐1 cells are employed to control macrophage polarization on nano‐rough surfaces for a duration of 7 days. Model nano‐rough substrates are fabricated by immobilizing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of predetermined sizes (16, 38, 68 nm) on a 2‐methyl‐2‐oxazoline thin film, followed by tailoring the outermost surface chemistry. All modified surfaces support high levels of cell adhesion and proliferation. Over time, the expression of pro‐inflammatory cytokines decreases, whereas the expression of anti‐inflammatory cytokines increases on all modified surfaces. Similarly, pro‐inflammatory interleukin (IL)‐1β gene expression is downregulated, and anti‐inflammatory IL‐10‐gene expression is upregulated, regardless of the surface roughness. Analysis of cell morphology reveals that the predominant cell type on the modified surfaces exhibits M2 anti‐inflammatory phenotype. Herein, how surface features can modulate macrophage responses over an extended period is highlighted, offering insights for the development of future biomaterial implants.

In the quest to curtail the spread of healthcare-associated infections, this work showcases the fabrication of a cutting-edge antibacterial textile coating armoured with aggregation-induced emission photosensitisers (AIE PS) to prevent bacterial colonisation on textiles. The adopted methodology includes a multi-step process using plasma polymerisation and subsequent integration of AIE PS on their surface. The antibacterial effectiveness of the coating was tested against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus after light irradiation for 1 h. Furthermore, antibacterial mechanistic studies revealed their ability to generate reactive oxygen species that can damage bacterial cell membrane integrity. The results of this investigation can be used to develop ground-breaking explanations for infection deterrence, principally in situations where hospital fabrics play a critical part in the transmission of diseases. The antibacterial coating for textiles developed in this study holds great promise as an efficient strategy to promote public health and reduce the danger of bacterial diseases through regular contact with fabrics.

The atomic force microscope is a versatile tool for assessing the topography, friction, and roughness of a broad spectrum of surfaces, encompassing anti-bacterial nanostructure arrays. Measuring and comparing all these values with one instrument allows clear comparisons of many nanomechanical reactions and anomalies. Increasing nano-Newton-level forces through the cantilever tip allows for the testing and measuring of failure points, damage behavior, and functionality under unfavorable conditions. Subjecting a grade 5 titanium alloy to hydrothermally etched nanostructures while applying elevated cantilever tip forces resulted in the observation of irreversible damage through atomic force microscopy. Despite the damage, a rough and non-uniform morphology remained that may still allow it to perform in its intended application as an anti-bacterial implant surface. Utilizing an atomic force microscope enables the evaluation of these surfaces before their biomedical application.

Implant-associated infections (IAI) cause significant health issues and healthcare costs. In this research, we deposited graphene (Gr) on a medical-grade cobalt-chromium (CoCr) alloy surface by radiofrequency plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (RF-PECVD) using Origanum vulgare as a precursor material. The deposition of Gr on the CoCr was confirmed using Raman spectroscopy and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The biocompatibility and antibacterial properties of CoCr-Gr were investigated. CoCr-Gr was biocompatible and promoted cell adhesion and spreading of RAW 267.4 macrophage cells. CoCr-Gr were antibacterial against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa and inhibited P. aeruginosa attachment. The results indicate that CoCr-Gr could be used as a potential antibacterial coating material for implantable devices.

This paper presents a critical review of recent advances in the processes of converting CO2 and CH4 gases into fine chemicals using plasma-assisted catalysis. The general principles of plasma-catalytic processes are summarized, presenting schematics and operation principles of typical plasma reactors for applications in catalysis. The applications of plasma in various catalytic CO2 and/or CH4 conversion processes are discussed and the advantages of using plasma in catalysis compared to traditional thermal processes are highlighted. Among all the plasma reactors presented in the review, the use of the DBD reactor for CO2 and CH4 conversion is described in detail due to its simplicity, possible configuration changes, easy catalyst replacement and its mild operating conditions during the process compared to other types of plasma reactors. The paper presents also the postulated reaction paths and a comparison of the efficiency and the selectivities obtained during the dry reforming of methane process using various type of reactors. Current challenges and outlook for plasma-assisted catalytic processes are also presented.

Abstract Background Transepithelial medical devices are increasing utilized in clinical practices. However, the damage of continuous natural epithelial barrier has become a major risk factor for the failure of epithelium-penetrating implants. How to increase the “epithelial barrier structures” (focal adhesions, hemidesmosomes, etc.) becomes one key research aim in overcoming this difficulty. Directly targeting the in situ “epithelial barrier structures” related proteins (such as fibronectin) absorption and functionalization can be a promising way to enhance interface-epithelial integration. Methods Herein, we fabricated three plasma polymerized bio-interfaces possessing controllable surface chemistry. Their capacity to adsorb and functionalize fibronectin (FN) from serum protein was compared by Liquid Chromatography-Tandem Mass Spectrometry. The underlying mechanisms were revealed by molecular dynamics simulation. The response of gingival epithelial cells regarding the formation of epithelial barrier structures was tested. Results Plasma polymerized surfaces successfully directed distinguished protein adsorption profiles from serum protein pool, in which plasma polymerized allylamine (ppAA) surface favored adsorbing adhesion related proteins and could promote FN absorption and functionalization via electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds, thus subsequently activating the ITG β1-FAK-mTOR signaling and promoting gingival epithelial cells adhesion. Conclusion This study offers an effective perspective to overcome the current dilemma of the inferior interface-epithelial integration by in situ protein absorption and functionalization, which may advance the development of functional transepithelial biointerfaces. Introductions: Excessive mechanical stress is closely associated with cell death in various conditions. Exposure of chondrocytes to excessive mechanical loading leads to a catabolic response as well as exaggerated cell death. Ferroptosis is a recently identified form of cell death during cell aging and degeneration. However, it's potential association with mechanical stress remains to be illustrated. Objectives: To identify whether excessive mechanical stress can cause ferroptosis. To explore the role of mechanical overloading in chondrocyte ferroptosis. Methods: Chondrocytes were collected from loading and unloading zones of cartilage in patients with osteoarthritis (OA), and the ferroptosis phenotype was analyzed through transmission electron microscope and microarray. Moreover, the relationship between ferroptosis and OA was analyzed by GPX4-conditional knockout (Col2a1-CreERT: GPX4flox/flox) mice OA model and chondrocytes cultured with high strain mechanical stress. Furthermore, the role of Piezo1 ion channel in chondrocyte ferroptosis and OA development was explored by using its inhibitor (GsMTx4) and agonist (Yoda1). Additionally, chondrocyte was cultured in calcium-free medium with mechanical stress, and ferroptosis phenotype was tested. Results: Human cartilage and mouse chondrocyte experiments revealed that mechanical overloading can induce GPX4-associated ferroptosis. Conditional knockout of GPX4 in cartilage aggravated experimental OA process, while additional treatment with ferroptosis suppressor protein (FSP-1) and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) abated OA development in GPX4-CKO mice. In mouse OA model and chondrocyte experiments, inhibition of Piezo1 channel activity increased GPX4 expression, attenuated ferroptosis phenotype and reduced the severity of osteoarthritis. Additionally, high strain mechanical stress induced ferroptosis damage in chondrocyte was largely abolished by blocking calcium influx through calcium-free medium. Conclusions: Our findings show that mechanical overloading induces ferroptosis through Piezo1 activation and subsequent calcium influx in chondrocytes, which might provide a potential target for OA treatment.

Abstract This work reveals a versatile new method to produce films with antimicrobial properties that can also bond materials together with robust tensile adhesive strength. Specifically, we demonstrate the formation of coatings by using a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma to convert a liquid small-molecule precursor, m-cresol, to a solid film via plasma-assisted on-surface polymerisation. The films are quite appealing from a sustainability perspective: they are produced using a low-energy process and from a molecule produced in abundance as a by-product of coal tar processing. This process consumes only 1.5 Wh of electricity to create a 1 cm2 film, which is much lower than other methods commonly used for film deposition, such as chemical vapour deposition (CVD). Plasma treatments were performed in plain air without the need for any carrier or precursor gas, with a variety of exposure durations. By varying the plasma parameters, it is possible to modify both the adhesive property of the film, which is at a maximum at a 1 min plasma exposure, and the antimicrobial property of the film against Escherichia coli, which is at a maximum at a 30 s exposure.

Abstract The use of antibacterial and antifouling materials is widely being investigated to combat the increasing risk associated with bacterial infections and the evolution of drug‐resistant bacteria. Efficient antibacterial materials can be fabricated by mimicking the topography found on the surface of natural antibacterial materials. Natural materials such as the wings of cicadas and dragonflies have evolved to use the structural features on their surface to attain bactericidal properties. The nanopillars/nanospikes present on these natural materials physically damage the bacterial cells that settle on the nanostructures resulting in cell lysis and death. This article reviews the role of nanostructures found on the surface of some of these natural antibacterial and antifouling materials such as lotus leaf, cicadas and dragonflies wings, shark skin, and rose petals. These natural structures provide guidelines for the design of synthetic bio‐inspired materials. This review article also presents some novel fabrication techniques used to produce biomimetic micro‐ and nano‐structures on synthetic material surfaces. The role of size, shape, aspect ratio, and spacing between the micro/nano‐structures on the bactericidal properties is also discussed. Finally, the review is finished with the author's view on the future of the field.

Background and Aims. Tartrate stabilisation is a necessary step in commercial wine production. The traditional method to prevent crystallisation and precipitation of potassium bitartrate (KHT) after a wine is bottled is by adding seed KHT crystals to wine stored in a tank and holding temperatures below 0°C for a set period of time before bottling. This process requires time and energy and a filtration step to remove sediment. However, compared to other technical solutions such as reverse osmosis, electrodialysis, or ion exchange, it is still the most economical stabilisation option. This work aims to evaluate the ability of zeolites to cold stabilize white wines. Since zeolites can also remove proteins and thus heat-stabilize white wines, the new process can potentially combine heat and cold stability in a single treatment. Methods and Results. Effective tartrate stabilisation was achieved by mixing a natural zeolite sample with white wine for three hours. Although the quantum of required zeolite was larger than bentonite, zeolite did not exhibit shrink-swell behaviour, thus enabling greater wine recovery and capacity to be regenerated. Effective heat and cold stability could be achieved using a low-calcium zeolite as a processing aid in a single treatment. To avoid aluminium leaching and elevated aluminium concentrations in the treated wine, the zeolite was calcinated before being added to the wine. The calcination process also reduced calcium content in the wine after treatment with zeolite, thus eliminating the risk of calcium instability. Conclusions. The application of zeolite as a processing aid can potentially be effective in cold-stabilizing white wines and removing proteins responsible for haze formation. Significance of the study. Zeolites may constitute an alternative technology in white wine production facilitating heat and cold stabilisation in a single treatment.

Micro/nano topographic structures have shown great utility in many biomedical areas including cell therapies, tissue engineering, and implantable devices. Computer-assisted informatics methods hold great promise for the design of topographic structures with targeted properties for a specific medical application. To benefit from these methods, researchers and engineers require a highly reusable “one structural parameter – one set of cell responses” database. However, existing confounding factors in topographic cell culture devices seriously impede the acquisition of this kind of data. Through carefully dissecting the confounding factors and their possible reasons for emergence, we developed corresponding guideline requirements for topographic cell culture device development to remove or control the influence of such factors. Based on these requirements, we then suggested potential strategies to meet them. In this work, we also experimentally demonstrated a topographic cell culture device with controlled confounding factors based on these guideline requirements and corresponding strategies. A “guideline for the development of topographic cell culture devices” was summarized to instruct researchers to develop topographic cell culture devices with the confounding factors removed or well controlled. This guideline aims to promote the establishment of a highly reusable “one structural parameter – one set of cell responses” database that could facilitate the application of informatics methods, such as artificial intelligence, in the rational design of future biotopographic structures with high efficacy.

The fight between humans and bacteria has escalated to a new level

The main objective of this work was to study the physicochemical and catalytic properties of bimetallic supported catalysts [1%M-Fe/Al2O3-Cr2O3 (2:1) (M = Ru, Au, Pt, Pd)] in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis. Furthermore, the study investigated the effect of noble metal addition to iron-supported catalysts on their physicochemical properties and reactivity. The physicochemical properties of the catalysts were studied using a range of characterization techniques such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), temperature-programmed reduction (TPR-H2), temperature-programmed desorption of ammonia (TPD-NH3) and BET (Brunauer – Emmett - Teller method). The activity tests were performed by Fischer-Tropsch synthesis in a high-pressure fixed-bed reactor using a gas mixture of H2 and CO with a molar ratio of 1:1. The correlation between the physicochemical properties of the investigated catalysts and their catalytic performance in CO hydrogenation was also investigated. The reactivity results showed that the most active system exhibited a high specific surface area, the highest total acidity and was the most reducible catalyst compared to the other catalysts tested. In addition, the AuFe system showed high selectivity towards liquid product formation during CO hydrogenation.

Dental caries is a common and costly multifactorial biofilm disease caused by cariogenic bacteria that ferment carbohydrates to lactic acid, demineralizing the inorganic component of teeth. Therefore, low pH (pH 4.5) is a characteristic signal of the localised carious environment, compared to a healthy oral pH range (6.8 to 7.4). The development of pH-responsive delivery systems that release antibacterial agents in response to low pH has gained attention as a targeted therapy for dental caries. Release is triggered by high levels of acidogenic species and their reduction may select for the establishment of health-associated biofilm communities. Moreover, drug efficacy can be amplified by the modification of the delivery system to target adhesion to the plaque biofilm to extend the retention time of antimicrobial agents in the oral cavity. In this review, recent developments of different pH-responsive nanocarriers and their biofilm targeting mechanisms are discussed. This review critically discusses the current state of the art and innovations in the development and use of smart delivery materials for dental caries treatment. The authors’ views for the future of the field are also presented.

Abstract Hexaminolevulinate (HAL) induced Protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) fluorescence is commonly used to differentiate cancer cells from normal cells in vivo, as for instance in blue light cystoscopy for bladder cancer diagnosis. A detailed approach is here provided to use this diagnostic principle ex vivo in an immunosensor device, towards enabling non-invasive cancer diagnostic from body fluids, such as urine. Several factors susceptible to affect the applicability of HAL-assisted diagnosis in body fluids were tested. These included the cell viability and its impact on PpIX fluorescence, the storage condition and shelf life of HAL premix reagent, light exposure (360–450 nm wavelengths) and its corresponding effect on both intensity and bleaching of the PpIX fluorescence as a function of the microscopy imaging conditions. There was no significant decrease in the viability of bladder cancer cells after 6 h at 4 °C (student’s t-test: p > 0.05). The cellular PpIX fluorescence decreased in a time-dependent manner when cancer cells were kept at 4 °C for extended period of time, though this didn’t significantly reduce the fluorescence intensity contrast between cancer and non-cancer cells kept in the same condition for 6 h. HAL premix reagent kept in long term storage at 4 °C induced stronger PpIX fluorescence than reagent kept in the − 20 °C freezer. The PpIX fluorescence was negatively affected by repeated light exposure but increased with illumination intensity and exposure time. Though this applied to both healthy and cancer cell lines, and therefore did not statistically improved the differentiation between cell types. This study revealed important experimental settings that need to be carefully considered to benefit from the analytical potential of HAL induced fluorescence when used in technologies for the diagnosis of cancer from body fluids.

In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were prepared by chemical vapour deposition (CVD) using acetylene as a carbon source over an iron catalyst. As-prepared MWCNTs were used to support modern mono-copper, palladium, and bimetallic palladium-copper catalysts, and their feasibility for hydrogen production was tested during steam reforming of methanol (SRM) and methanol decomposition (DM). The structural characteristics of the MWCNTs were evaluated using the SEM and XRD methods. The physicochemical properties of the monometallic and bimetallic catalysts were analysed using the TPR and XRD methods. The promotion effect of palladium on methanol conversion rate and H2 productivity in the case of the copper catalysts was demonstrated. The enhanced activity of the Cu/MWCNTs after palladium promotion was due to the formation of Pd-Cu alloy compound.

The demand for joint replacement and other orthopedic surgeries involving titanium implants is continuously increasing; however, 1%–2% of surgeries result in costly and devastating implant associated infections (IAIs). Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are two common pathogens known to colonise implants, leading to serious complications. Bioinspired surfaces with spike-like nanotopography have previously been shown to kill bacteria upon contact; however, the longer-term potential of such surfaces to prevent or delay biofilm formation is unclear. Hence, we monitored biofilm formation on control and nanostructured titanium disc surfaces over 21 days following inoculation with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. We found a consistent 2-log or higher reduction in live bacteria throughout the time course for both bacteria. The biovolume on nanostructured discs was also significantly lower than control discs at all time points for both bacteria. Analysis of the biovolume revealed that for the nanostructured surface, bacteria was killed not just on the surface, but at locations above the surface. Interestingly, pockets of bacterial regrowth on top of the biomass occurred in both bacterial species, however this was more pronounced for S. aureus cultures after 21 days. We found that the nanostructured surface showed antibacterial properties throughout this longitudinal study. To our knowledge this is the first in vitro study to show reduction in the viability of bacterial colonisation on a nanostructured surface over a clinically relevant time frame, providing potential to reduce the likelihood of implant associated infections.

Monometallic copper, nickel and bimetallic Pd(Rh)-Cu(Ni) catalysts supported on a binary oxide containing various content of ZrO2 and Al2O3 were prepared by impregnation method. Their physicochemical and catalytic properties in oxy-steam reforming of methanol reaction (OSRM) were extensively investigated. Selecting an optimal composition of the catalyst for the OSRM process was the main goal of this work. The influence of zirconia content on the reactivity and physicochemical properties of supported copper catalysts in OSRM was also studied. The reactivity measurements showed that the supported copper catalyst was more active than the nickel catalyst. The catalytic measurements showed that the catalyst properties depend on their surface composition, acidity and adsorption properties. High selectivity of supported copper catalyst with composition 20%Cu/ZrO2·Al2O3 (Zr:Al = 1:2) towards carbon dioxide and hydrogen was confirmed. In addition, the promotion effect of palladium and rhodium on the activity of monometallic supported copper and nickel catalysts in OSRM was confirmed. Surface roughness plays an important role in regulating protein adsorption to biomaterial surfaces and modulating the subsequent inflammatory response. In this study, we examined the role of surface nanotopography on albumin adsorption, unfolding and subsequent immune responses. To achieve the objectives of the study, we create model surfaces of hill-like nanoprotrusions by covalently immobilizing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) of predetermined sizes (16, 38, and 68 nm) on a functional plasma polymer layer. The amount of adsorbed albumin increased with the increase in surface area caused by greater surface nanotopography scales. Circular dichroism spectroscopy was used to evaluate albumin conformational changes and pointed to loss of α-helical structure on all model surfaces with the greatest conformational changes found on the smooth surface and the surface with largest nanotopography features. Studies with differentiated THP-1 cells (dTHP-1) demonstrated that immune cells interacted with surface adsorbed albumin via their scavenger receptors, which could bind to exposed peptide sequences caused by surface induced unfolding of the albumin. Pre-adsorption of albumin resulted in an overall decrease in the level of expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines from dTHP-1 cells. On the other hand, pre-adsorption of albumin led in an increase in the production of anti-inflammatory markers, which suggests a switch to the M2 pro-healing phenotype. The knowledge obtained from this study could instruct the design of healthcare materials where the generation of targeted surface nanotopography and pre-adsorption of albumin may enhance the biomaterial biocompatibility and lead to faster wound healing.

Amphotericin B is an antifungal drug used for the treatment of invasive fungal infections. However, its clinical use is limited due to its serious side effects, such as renal and cardiovascular toxicity. Furthermore, amphotericin B is administered in high doses due to its poor water solubility. Hence, it is necessary to develop an on-demand release strategy for the delivery of amphotericin B to reduce cytotoxicity. The present report describes a novel encapsulation of amphotericin B into lipase-sensitive polycaprolactone to form a nanocomposite. Nanocomposites were produced by the oil-in-water method and their physicochemical properties such as size, hydrodynamic diameter, drug loading, and zeta potential were determined. The in vitro release of amphotericin B was characterized in the presence and absence of lipase. The antifungal activity of the nanocomposites was verified against lipase-secreting Candida albicans, and cytotoxicity was tested against primary human dermal fibroblasts. In the absence of lipase, the release of amphotericin B from the nanocomposites was minimal. However, in the presence of lipase, an enzyme that is abundant at infection sites, a fungicidal concentration of amphotericin B was released from the nanocomposites. The antifungal activity of the nanocomposites showed an enhanced effect against the lipase-secreting fungus, Candida albicans, in comparison to the free drug at the same concentration. Furthermore, nanoencapsulation significantly reduced amphotericin B-related cytotoxicity compared to the free drug. The synthesized nanocomposites can serve as a potent carrier for the responsive delivery of amphotericin B in antifungal applications.

Seven different inhibitors of the heme metabolic pathway were applied in combination with HAL to study the formation of PpIX in bladder cancer HT1197 and normal fibroblast HFFF2 cells ex vivo, specifically with the aim to increase the fluorescence contrast between cancer and non-cancer cells. The mRNA expression of enzymes involved in the heme biosynthesis pathway were measured via PCR following incubation with the drugs in order to link the fluorescence levels and metabolic activity. The exogenous administration of HAL does lead to cancer-specific PpIX accumulation. However, the contrast between cancer and normal cells in suspension was not enhanced by the enzyme inhibitors and iron-chelating agents tested, nor did the mRNA expression necessarily correlate with the fluorescence intensity. The results indicate that a difference in the metabolic activity of cells in suspension may limit the applicability of exogenous enzyme inhibitor administration as a mean to improve the fluorescence-based detection of cancer cells shed in body fluids.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common degenerative disease, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) is known to play a critical role in OA. Cortistatin (CST) is a neuropeptide discovered over 20 years ago, which plays a vital role in inflammatory reactions. However, it is unknown whether CST is involved in cartilage degeneration and OA development. Methods: The interaction between CST and TNF-α receptors was investigated through Coimmunoprecipitation and Biotin-based solid-phase binding assay. Western blot, Real-time PCR, ELISA, immunofluorescence staining, nitrite production assay and DMMB assay of GAG were performed for the primary chondrocyte experiments. Surgically induced and spontaneous OA models were established and western blot, flow cytometry, Real-time PCR, ELISA, immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in vivo imaging were performed for in vivo experiments. Findings: CST competitively bound to TNFR1 as well as TNFR2. CST suppressed proinflammatory function of TNF-α. Both spontaneous and surgically induced OA models indicated that deficiency of CST led to an accelerated OA-like phenotype, while exogenous CST attenuated OA development in vivo. Additionally, TNFR1- and TNFR2-knockout mice were used for analysis and indicated that TNFRs might be involved in the protective role of CST in OA. CST inhibited activation of the NF-κB signaling pathway in OA. Interpretation: This study provides new insight into the pathogenesis and therapeutic strategy of cartilage degenerative diseases, including OA. Inspired by observations that the natural topography observed on cicada and dragonfly wings may be lethal to bacteria, researchers have sought to reproduce these nanostructures on biomaterials with the goal of reducing implant-associated infections. Titanium and its alloys are widely employed biomaterials with excellent properties but are susceptible to bacterial colonisation. Hydrothermal etching is a simple, cost-effective procedure which fabricates nanoscale protrusions of various dimensions upon titanium, depending on the etching parameters used. We investigated the role of etching time and the choice of cation (sodium and potassium) in the alkaline heat treatment on the topographical, physical, and bactericidal properties of the resulting modified titanium surfaces. Optimal etching times were 4 h for sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and 5 h for potassium hydroxide (KOH). NaOH etching for 4 h produced dense, but somewhat ordered, surface nanofeatures with 75 nanospikes per µm2. In comparison, KOH etching for 5 h resulted sparser but nonetheless disordered surface morphology with only 8 spikes per µm2. The NaOH surface was more effective at eliminating Gram-negative pathogens, while the KOH surface was more effective against the Gram-positive strains. These findings may guide further research and development of bactericidal titanium surfaces which are optimised for the predominant pathogens associated with the intended application.

Nanoparticles are widely used for biomedical applications such as vaccine, drug delivery, diagnostics, and therapeutics. This study aims to reveal the influence of nanoparticle surface functionalization on protein corona formation from blood serum and plasma and the subsequent effects on the innate immune cellular responses. To achieve this goal, the surface chemistry of silica nanoparticles of 20 nm diameter was tailored via plasma polymerization with amine, carboxylic acid, oxazolines, and alkane functionalities. The results of this study show significant surface chemistry-induced differences in protein corona composition, which reflect in the subsequent inflammatory consequences. Nanoparticles rich with carboxylic acid surface functionalities increased the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to higher level of complement proteins and decreased the number of lipoproteins found in their protein coronas. On another hand, amine rich coatings led to increased expressions of anti-inflammatory markers such as arginase. The findings demonstrate the potential to direct physiological responses to nanomaterials via tailoring their surface chemical composition.

Urine-based biomarkers have shown suitable diagnostic potential for prostate cancer (PCa) detection. Yet, until now, prostatic massage remains required prior to urine sampling. Here, we test a potential diagnostic approach using voided urine collected without prior digital rectal examination (DRE). In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic performance of a microfluidic-based platform that combines the principle of photodynamic diagnostic with immunocapture for the detection of PCa cells. The functionality and sensitivity of this platform were validated using both cultured cells and PCa patient urine samples. Quantitative reverse-transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) demonstrated this platform had a detection limit of fewer than 10 cells per 60 µL and successfully validated the presence of a PCa biomarker in the urine of cancer patients without prior DRE. This biosensing platform exhibits a sensitivity of 72.4% and a specificity of 71.4%, in suitable agreement with qRT-PCR data. The results of this study constitute a stepping stone in the future development of noninvasive prostate cancer diagnostic technologies that do not require DRE.

This work presents, for the first time, the comparative physicochemical and reactivity studies of a range of bimetallic Pt-Ni, Pd-Ni, Ru-Ni, and Ag-Ni catalysts in the oxy-steam reforming (OSR) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) reaction towards hydrogen generation. In order to achieve the intended purpose of this work, a binary oxide CeO2·ZrO2 (1:2) support was prepared via a co-precipitation method. The catalysts’ physicochemical properties were studied using X-ray diffraction (XRD), BET, TPR-H2, TPD-NH3, SEM-EDS and XPS methods. The highest activity in the studied process was exhibited by the 1%Pt-5%Ni catalyst supported on CeO2·ZrO2 (1:2) system. The highest activity of this system is explained by the specific interactions occurring between the components of the active phase and between the components of the active phase and the carrier itself. The activity results showed that this catalytic system exhibited above 71% of the methane conversion at 600 °C and 60% yield of hydrogen formation. The results of this work demonstrate that the Pt-Ni and Ru-Ni catalytic systems hold promise to be applied in the production of hydrogen to power solid oxide fuel cells.

The link between the microbiome and cancer has led researchers to search for a potential probe for intracellular targeting of bacteria and cancer. Herein, we developed near infrared-emitting ternary AgInSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) for dual bacterial and cancer imaging. Briefly, water-soluble AgInSe/ZnS QDs were synthesized in a commercial kitchen pressure cooker. The as-synthesized QDs exhibited a spherical shape with a particle diameter of 4.5 ± 0.5 nm, and they were brightly fluorescent with a photoluminescence maximum at 705 nm. The QDs showed low toxicity against mouse mammary carcinoma (FM3A-Luc), mouse colon carcinoma (C26), malignant fibrous histiocytoma-like (KM-Luc/GFP) and prostate cancer cells, a greater number of accumulations in Staphylococcus aureus, and good cellular uptake in prostate cancer cells. This work is an excellent step towards using ternary QDs for diagnostic and guided therapy for prostate cancer.

Biofilm-associated infections are a major cause of impaired wound healing. Despite the broad spectrum of anti-bacterial benefits provided by silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), these materials still cause controversy due to cytotoxicity and a lack of efficacy against mature biofilms. Herein, highly potent ultrasmall AgNPs were combined with a biocompatible hydrogel with integrated synergistic functionalities to facilitate elimination of clinically relevant mature biofilms in-vivo combined with improved wound healing capacity. The delivery platform showed a superior release mechanism, reflected by high biocompatibility, hemocompatibility, and extended antibacterial efficacy. In vivo studies using the S. aureus wound biofilm model showed that the AgNP hydrogel (200 µg/g) was highly effective in eliminating biofilm infection and promoting wound repair compared to the controls, including silver sulfadiazine (Ag SD). Treatment of infected wounds with the AgNP hydrogel resulted in faster wound closure (46% closure compared to 20% for Ag SD) and accelerated wound re-epithelization (60% for AgNP), as well as improved early collagen deposition. The AgNP hydrogel did not show any toxicity to tissue and/or organs. These findings suggest that the developed AgNP hydrogel has the potential to be a safe wound treatment capable of eliminating infection and providing a safe yet effective strategy for the treatment of infected wounds.

If plasma polymer thin films are to be synthesised from sustainable and natural precursors of chemically heterogeneous composition, it is important to understand the extent to which this composition influences the mechanism of polymerisation. To this end, a well-studied monoterpene alcohol, terpinen-4-ol, has been targeted for a comparative study with the naturally occurring mix of terpenes (viz. Melaleuca alternifolia oil) from which it is commonly distilled. Positive ion mode mass spectra of both terpinen-4-ol and M. alternifolia oil showed a decrease in disparities between the type and abundance of cationic species formed in their respective plasma environments as applied plasma power was increased. Supplementary biological assay revealed the antibacterial action of both terpinen-4-ol and M. alternifolia derived coatings with respect to S. aureus bacteria, whilst cytocompatibility was demonstrated by comparable eukaryotic cell adhesion to both coatings. Elucidating the processes occurring within the reactive plasmas can enhance the economics of plasma polymer deposition by permitting use of the minimum power, time and precursor pre-processing required to control the extent of monomer fragmentation and fabricate a film of the desired thickness and functionality.

This work provides valuable information about unexplored catalytic systems tested in the transesterification reaction of vegetable oil with methanol. It was demonstrated that natural zeolite treatment leads to enhanced catalytic activity and yield of biodiesel production. The activation of the catalytic material in a mixture of 5% H2–95% Ar resulted in an improvement of the values of the TG conversion and fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) yield. In addition, it was proven that the incorporation of CaO, MgO and SrO oxides onto the natural zeolite surface improves the TG conversion and FAME yield values in the transesterification reaction.

Abstract Reduced graphene oxide (rGO) is a promising antibacterial material, the efficacy of which can be further enhanced by the addition of silver nanoparticles (nAg). In this study, the mechanisms of antibacterial activity of rGO–nAg nanocomposite against several important human pathogenic multi-drug resistant bacteria, namely Gram-positive coccal Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative rod-shaped Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis are investigated. At the same concentration (100 µg/ml), rGO–nAg nanocomposite was significantly more effective against all three pathogens than either rGO or nAg. The nanocomposite was equally active against P. mirabilis and S. aureus as systemic antibiotic nitrofurantoin, and significantly more effective against E. coli. Importantly, the inhibition was much faster in the case of rGO–nAg nanocomposite compared to nitrofurantoin, attributed to the synergistic effects of rGO–nAg mediated contact killing and oxidative stress. This study may provide new insights for the better understanding of antibacterial actions of rGO–nAg nanocomposite and for the better designing of graphene-based antibiotics or other biomedical applications.

Chronic wounds fail to heal and are accompanied by an ongoing infection. They cause suffering, shorten lifespans, and their prevalence is increasing. Unfortunately, the medical treatment of chronic wounds has remained unchanged for decades. A novel approach to break the biological vicious cycle is the long-lived radical (2,2,6,6-Tetramethylpiperidin-1-yl)oxyl (TEMPO). TEMPO can be plasma polymerised (TEMPOpp) into thin coatings that have antimicrobial properties. However, due to its radical nature, quenching causes it to lose effectiveness over time. Our aim in this study was to extend the shelf-life of TEMPOpp coatings using various storage conditions: Namely, room temperature (RT), room temperature & vacuum sealed (RTV), freezer temperature & vacuum sealed (FTV). We have analysed the coatings’ quality via the surface analytical methods of X-Ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR); finding marked differences among the three storage conditions. Furthermore, we have compared the antimicrobial efficacy of the stored coatings against two major bacterial pathogens, Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis, commonly found in chronic wounds. We did so both qualitatively via live/dead staining, as well as quantitatively via (2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl)-5-[(phenylamino) carbonyl]-2H-tetrazolium (XTT) viability assay for up to 15 weeks in 5 weeks increments. Taken all together, we demonstrate that samples stored under FTV conditions retain the highest antimicrobial activity after 15 weeks and that this finding correlates with the retained concentration of nitroxides.

Persistent wound infections have been a therapeutic challenge for a long time. Current treatment approaches are mostly based on the delivery of antibiotics, but these are not effective for all infections. Here, we report the development of a sensitive pH-responsive hydrogel that can provide controlled, pH-triggered release of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). This delivery system was designed to sense the environmental pH and trigger the release of AgNPs when the pH changes from acidic to alkaline, as occurs due to the presence of pathogenic bacteria in the wound. Our results show that the prepared hydrogel restricts the release of AgNPs at acidic pH (pH = 4) but substantially amplifies it at alkaline pH (pH = 7.4 and pH = 10). This indicates the potential use of the hydrogel for the on-demand release of Ag+ depending on the environmental pH. In vitro antibacterial studies demonstrated effective elimination of both Gram-negative and positive bacteria. Additionally, the effective antibacterial dose of Ag+ showed no toxicity towards mammalian skin cells. Collectively, this pH-responsive hydrogel presents potential as a promising new material for the treatment of infected wounds.

Biodiesel production from rapeseed oil and methanol via transesterification reaction facilitated by various monometallic catalyst supported on natural zeolite (NZ) was investigated. The physicochemical characteristics of the synthesized catalysts were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller method (BET), temperature-programmed-reduction in hydrogen (H2-TPR), temperature-programmed-desorption of ammonia (NH3-TPD), Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with EDX detector (SEM-EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) methods. The highest activity and methyl ester yields were obtained for the Pt/NZ catalyst. This catalyst showed the highest triglycerides conversion of 98.9% and fatty acids methyl esters yields of 94.6%. The activity results also confirmed the high activity of the carrier material (NZ) itself in the investigated reaction. Support material exhibited 90.5% of TG conversion and the Fatty Acid Methyl Esters yield (FAME) of 67.2%. Introduction of noble metals improves the TG conversion and FAME yield values. Increasing of the metal loading from 0.5 to 2 wt.% improves the reactivity properties of the investigated catalysts.

Blue light cystoscopy (BLC) is the most recent clinical approach in the detection and diagnosis of bladder cancer, a common type of cancer with a high rate of recurrence. Representing a significant advance over previous approaches, this photodynamic diagnostic technique uses a photosensitiser prodrug as an adjunct to white light cystoscopy to enhance the in vivo detection of malignant tissues in the bladder based on their distinctive fluorescence. Whilst it does improve detection rates, BLC remains an invasive and costly procedure. Meanwhile, a variety of noninvasive urine detection methods and related microdevices have been developed, none of which have yet entered routine clinical use due to unsatisfactory sensitivity. Following a brief description of the current approaches and their limitations, we provide here a systematic review of a newer niche research aiming to develop a noninvasive adaptation of photodynamic diagnosis. The research to date surrounding the ex situ use of photosensitiser prodrugs for urinary diagnosis of bladder cancer is also discussed.

Silver nanoparticles have applications in plasmonics, medicine, catalysis and electronics. We report a simple, cost-effective, facile and reproducible technique to synthesise silver nanoparticles via plasma-induced non-equilibrium liquid chemistry with the absence of a chemical reducing agent. Silver nanoparticles with tuneable sizes from 5.4 to 17.8 nm are synthesised and characterised using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and other analytic techniques. A mechanism for silver nanoparticle formation is also proposed. The antibacterial activity of the silver nanoparticles was investigated with gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. The inhibition of both bacteria types was observed. This is a promising alternative method for the instant synthesis of silver nanoparticles, instead of the conventional chemical reduction route, for numerous applications.

Over the last decades there has been a tremendous volume of research efforts focused on engineering silver-based (nano)materials. The interest in silver has been mostly driven by the element capacity to kill pathogenic bacteria. In this context, the main area of application has been medical devices that are at significant risk of becoming colonized by bacteria and subsequently infected. However, silver nanomaterials have been incorporated in a number of other commercial products which may or may not benefit from antibacterial protection. The rapid expansion of such products raises important questions about a possible adverse influence on human health. This review focuses on examining currently available literature and summarizing the current state of knowledge of the impact of silver (nano)materials on the immune system. The review also looks at various surface modification strategies used to generate silver-based nanomaterials and the immunomodulatory potential of these materials. It also highlights the immune response triggered by various silver-coated implantable devices and provides guidance and perspective towards engineering silver nanomaterials for modulating immunological consequences.

Exogenous administration of hexaminolevulinate (HAL) induces fluorescent protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) accumulation preferentially in cancer cells. However, the PpIX fluorescence intensities between noncancer and cancer cells are highly variable. The contrast between cancer and noncancer cells may be insufficient to reliably discriminate, especially at the single cell level in cancer diagnostics. This study examines the use of the chemical adjuvants dimethylsulphoxide (DMSO) or deferoxamine (DFO) to enhance the HAL induced PpIX accumulation in cancer cells. Our results showed that in some of the incubation conditions tested, the addition of DFO with HAL significantly increased PpIX 21 fluorescence of adherent monolayer cancer cells, but this was never the case for cells in suspension. Permeabilisation with DMSO did not increase PpIX fluorescence. Cell-to-cell interaction may well play an important role in the PpIX accumulation when suspended cells are treated in HAL and adjuvant chemicals.

In this work, bimetallic Cu-Ni catalysts supported on binary oxides containing ZnO, ZrO2, CeO2 and Al2O3 were investigated in hydrogen production via the oxidative steam reforming of methanol (OSRM). Their physicochemical properties were extensively studied using various methods such as BET, TPR-H2, TPD-NH3, XRD, SEM-EDS, ToF-SIMS and XPS. The reactivity measurements showed that the active phase and support composition played an important role in the activity of the catalyst in the OSRM. The most active system at higher temperatures was 30% Cu−10% Ni/CeO2·Al2O3, with high catalytic activity attributed to the Cu0.8Ni0.2 alloy formation. In addition, the reactivity results showed that the most active catalyst exhibited high acidity and was easily reduced. At low temperatures, the best catalytic properties were exhibited by 30% Cu−10% Ni/ZrO2·Al2O3. The reactivity and physicochemical properties of the studied catalysts confirmed the crucial role of alloy composition on their catalytic properties in the oxy-steam reforming of methanol. The obtained results validate the possibility of using Cu-Ni catalysts for hydrogen production.

Gold in a rock is usually associated with other elements, forms nuggets, or is hosted within the crystal lattice of a mineral (e.g., pyrite) and is often heterogeneously distributed and trapped inside the rock matrix even after crushing. Gold can be liberated from these rock matrices by chemical leaching, but then their concentration becomes too low for detection by a portable method due to the dilution effect of the leaching process. In this paper, we present a proof-of-concept method for gold pre-concentration to enable the detection of gold in rock at low levels using a portable technique. Two coating methods, plasma polymerization (PP) and wet chemistry (WC), were utilized to generate surface coatings, which were then compared for their effectiveness in binding gold ions. Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was used as a portable technique for the detection of immobilized gold on these modified surfaces. The detection limit for pure gold ions in solution incubated on PP and WC coatings was determined to be as low as 80 ppb. To demonstrate the real-life capability of the method, it was tested for rock sample leachates bearing 300−500 ppb gold.
