Abstract

Buildings play a key role in the transition to a low-carbon-energy system and in achieving Paris Agreement climate targets. Analyzing potential scenarios for building decarbonization in different socioeconomic contexts is a crucial step to develop national and transnational roadmaps to achieve global emission reduction targets. This study integrates building stock energy models for 32 countries across four continents to create carbon emission mitigation reference scenarios and decarbonization scenarios by 2050, covering 60% of today's global building emissions. These decarbonization pathways are compared to those from global models. Results demonstrate that reference scenarios are in all countries insufficient to achieve substantial decarbonization and lead, in some regions, to significant increases, i.e., China and South America. Decarbonization scenarios lead to substantial carbon reductions within the range projected in the 2 °C scenario but are still insufficient to achieve the decarbonization goals under the 1.5 °C scenario.

Abstract

The European Union has established a number of targets regarding energy efficiency, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) and CO2 reductions as the 'GREEN PAPER on Energy Efficiency', the Directive for 'promotion of the use of bio-fuels or other renewable fuels for transport' or 'Directive of the European Parliament of the Council on the promotion of cogeneration based on a useful heat demand in the internal energy market'. A lot of the according RES and RUE measures are not attractive for investors from an economic point of view. Therefore governments all over the world have to spend public money to promote these technologies/measures to bring them into market. These expenditures have to be adjusted to budget concerns and should be spent most efficiently. Therefore, the spent money has to be dedicated to technologies and efficiency measures with the best yield in CO2 reduction without wasting money. The core question: "How can public money - for promoting sustainable energy systems - be spent most efficiently to reduce GHG-emissions?" has been well investigated by the European project Invert. In course of this project a simulation tool has been designed to answer this core question. This paper describes the modelling with the Invert simulation tool and shows the key features necessary for simulating the energy system. A definition of 'Promotion Scheme Efficiency' is given which allows estimating the most cost effective technologies and/or efficiency measures to reduce CO2 emissions. Investigations performed with the Invert simulation tool deliver an optimum portfolio mix of technologies and efficiency measures for each selected region. Within Invert seven European regions were simulated and for the Austrian case study the detailed portfolio mix is shown and political conclusions are derived.

Abstract

With the adoption of the EU Climate Law in 2021, the EU has set itself a binding target to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55 percent compared to 1990 levels by 2030. To support the increased ambition, the EU Commission adopted proposals for revising the key directives and regulations addressing energy efficiency, renewable energies and greenhouse gas emissions in the Fit for 55 package. The heating and cooling (H&C) sector plays a key role for reaching the EU energy and climate targets. H&C accounts for about 50 percent of the final energy consumption in the EU, and the sector is largely based on fossil fuels. In 2021, the share of renewable energies in H&C reached 23%. The decarbonisation of heating and cooling is addressed across several directives and regulations at EU level. Abstract

The need for high-resolution data is exponentially growing in the current energy transition. In this sense, geographic information system tools are crucial for a more precise evaluation of solar energy potentials in complex urban environments. Thus, this work aims to provide novel insights into the need for high-resolution data and understand when and where these are required. The work analyses the impact of the horizon height of the surrounding areas as well as the more distant obstacles in evaluating the solar potential in three given locations in Bolzano, Italy starting from a high-resolution digital surface model. It was found that the more complex the location is, the more a spatially explicit approach with high-resolution data is required to detect the impact of the surrounding buildings. More importantly, it substantially affects the hourly availability of solar energy, which is crucial when simulating and dimensioning integrated systems at the building level. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
