Abstract

Uncomplicated cystitis is affecting many women of all ages and has a great impact on the quality of life, especially in women suffering from recurrent, uncomplicated cystitis. By far the most frequent uropathogen, E. coli , may have acquired increasing resistance against a variety of oral antibiotics, which may differ between countries and regions. Therefore, local resistance data are important to be considered. On the other hand, non-antibiotic therapy has also become an option which should be discussed and offered to the patient. In patients suffering from recurrent uncomplicated cystitis, individual risk factors and possible behavioral changes should first be taken into account. Non-antimicrobial prophylactic strategies shown to be successful in well-designed clinical studies are the next options. Long term antibiotic prophylaxis, however, should only be considered as a last option. For some of those patients self-diagnosis and self-treatment may be suitable, e.g. by using a recognized questionnaire.

12. Complex networks from space-filling bearings

Abstract

Two dimensional space-filling bearings are dense packings of disks that can rotate without slip. We consider the entire first family of bearings for loops of size four and propose a hierarchical construction of their contact network. We provide analytic expressions for the clustering coefficient and degree distribution, revealing bipartite scale-free behavior with tunable degree exponent depending on the bearing parameters. We also analyze their average shortest path and percolation properties.

Abstract

Long-range power-law correlated percolation is investigated using Monte Carlo simulations. We obtain several static and dynamic critical exponents as function of the Hurst exponent $H$ which characterizes the degree of spatial correlation among the occupation of sites. In particular, we study the fractal dimension of the largest cluster and the scaling behavior of the second moment of the cluster size distribution, as well as the complete and accessible perimeters of the largest cluster. Concerning the inner structure and transport properties of the largest cluster, we analyze its shortest path, backbone, red sites, and conductivity. Finally, bridge site growth is also considered. We propose expressions for the functional dependence of the critical exponents on $H$.

Abstract

Um die Frequenz rezidivierender Harnwegsinfektionen (rHWI) und die damit verbundene fortwährende Zunahme multiresistenter Uropathogene zu reduzieren, werden neuartige Präventionsmaßnahmen und Therapieansätze benötigt. Ziel dieser Übersichtsarbeit ist es, die aktuell verfügbare Evidenz über das Mikrobiom der Harnblase gesunder Frauen und solcher mit rHWI systematisch zu präsentieren. Außerdem werden relevante Studien zur Wirksamkeit von Probiotika bei rHWI strukturiert dargestellt. Hierdurch soll der gegenwärtige Stand der Forschung und ein Ausblick auf eine Therapie abseits der üblichen antimikrobiellen Behandlungsoptionen gegeben werden.
