Door de steeds strenger wordende eisen op het gebied van energiezuinigheid van gebouwen, neemt de aandacht voor nieuwe materialen en vernieuwende installatieconcepten toe. Eén van de concepten die een belangrijke rol spelen bij energiezuinige gebouwen is de opslag van warmte voor de korte (enkele uren of dagen) dan wel de lange (enkele maanden) termijn. Warmte kan op basis van drie principes worden opgeslagen: in de vorm van voelbare warmte, als chemische energie en in de vorm van latente warmte.

Fatigue is a gradual process of local strength reduction. It is a phenomenon of damage accumulation at stress concentrations caused by fluctuating stresses and/or strains. In metals this results in microscopic cracks. These will start to grow under continued cyclic loading until final failure occurs. The process of fatigue is essentially a process of crack growth. In general the damage accumulation, i.e. crack growth, is slow in the early stages and at the end of fatigue life it accelerates very quickly towards failure. All engineering metals are sensitive to fatigue. This dissertation deals with several aspects of fatigue crack growth in aluminum alloy AA 5083 from the threshold regime to final instability.

Using imagery at 30 m spatial resolution from the most recent Landsat satellite, the Landsat 7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+), we scale up reef metabolic productivity and calcification from local habitat-scale (10(-1) to 10(0) km(2)) measurements to regional scales (10(3) to 10(4) km(2)). Distribution and spatial extent of the North Florida Reef Tract (NFRT) habitats come from supervised classification of the Landsat imagery within independent Landsat-derived Millennium Coral Reef Map geomorphologic classes. This system minimizes the depth range and variability of benthic habitat characteristics found in the area of supervised classification and limits misclassification. Classification of Landsat imagery into 5 biotopes (sand, dense live cover, sparse live cover, seagrass, and sparse seagrass) by geomorphologic class is >73 % accurate at regional scales. Based on recently published habitat-scale in situ metabolic measurements, gross production (P=3.01 x 10(9) kg C yr(-1)), excess production (E = -5.70 x 10(8) kg C yr(-1)), and calcification (G = -1.68 x 10(6) kg CaCO3 yr(-1)) are estimated over 2711 km(2) of the NFRT. Simple models suggest sensitivity of these values to ocean acidification, which will increase local dissolution of carbonate sediments. Similar approaches could be applied over large areas with poorly constrained bathymetry or water column properties and minimal metabolic sampling. This tool has potential applications for modeling and monitoring large-scale environmental impacts on reef productivity, such as the influence of ocean acidification on coral reef environments.

The loss of coral reef habitats has been witnessed at a global scale including in the Florida Keys and the Caribbean. In addition to field surveys that can be spatially limited, remote sensing can provide a synoptic view of the changes occurring on coral reef habitats. Here, we utilize an 18-year time series of Landsat 5/TM and 7/ETM+ images to assess changes in eight coral reef sites in the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, namely Carysfort Reef, Grecian Rocks, Molasses Reef, Conch Reef, Sombrero Reef, Looe Key Reef, Western Sambo and Sand Key Reef. Twenty-eight Landsat images (1984-2002) were used, with imagery gathered every 2 years during spring, and every 6 years during fall. The image dataset was georectified, calibrated to remote sensing reflectance and corrected for atmospheric and water-column effects. A Mahalanobis distance classification was trained for four habitat classes ('coral', 'sand', 'bare hardbottom' and 'covered hardbottom') using in situ ground-truthing data collected in 2003-2004 and using the spectral statistics from a 2002 image. The red band was considered useful only for benthic habitats in depths less than 6 m. Overall mean coral habitat loss for all sites classified by Landsat was 61% (3.4%/year), from a percentage habitat cover of 19% (1984) down to 7.6% (2002). The classification results for the eight different sites were critically reviewed. A detailed pixel by pixel examination of the spatial patterns across time suggests that the results range from ecologically plausible to unreliable due to spatial inconsistencies and/or improbable ecological successions. In situ monitoring data acquired by the Coral Reef Evaluation and Monitoring Project (CREMP) for the eight reef sites between 1996 and 2002 showed a loss in coral cover of 52% (8.7%/year), whereas the Landsat-derived coral habitat areas decreased by 37% (6.2%/year). A direct trend comparison between the entire CREMP percent coral cover data set (1996-2004) and the entire Landsat-derived coral habitat areas showed no significant difference between the two time series (ANCOVA; F-test, p = 0.303, n = 32), despite the different scales of measurements.

This paper describes the work done in the COSINUS project, carried out within the framework of the European MAST3 research programme, on the interaction between suspended (cohesive) sediment and turbulence, with particular emphasis on its modelling. Specific attention is given to the modelling of buoyancy damping effects and turbulence production due to internal waves. Finally, some experimental results are presented on the effect of advected turbulence to the entrainment of fluid mud.

In quiescent water bodies that form part of estuarine or coastal water systems, such as harbours and access channels, fine sediments may deposit to form concentrated benthic suspensions (CBS). The flow velocities in these mud layers may become low, and the viscosities may become large, so that the Reynolds number decreases below a critical value and a transition from turbulent to laminar flow, designated herein as laminarisation, takes place. In this report laminarisation of CBS, modelled as a Newtonian fluid, is simulated using the Prandtl mixing-length turbulence model supplemented with a modified Van Driest model of low-Reynolds-number flow, and a transition criterion based on the concept of a critical value of the turbulence Reynolds number. This criterion is calibrated with experimental data obtained from the literature. The model is shown to reproduce the vertical distribution of the mean velocity at low Reynolds numbers quite well, Larninarisation in a slowly decelerating layer of CBS is found to take place at a Reynolds number of 1020, where the Reynolds number is defined as the product of mean velocity and layer depth divided by the kinematic viscosity. The inability of mixing-length models of reproducing memory effects, which actually do occur in laminarising flows, and effects of non-Newtonian CBS properties are briefly discussed.

The Prandtl mixing-length model of turbulent exchange of mass and momentum is applied to calculate the entrainment of overlying water into a layer of suspended fine sediment at a horizontal bed. In the field the flow and turbulence in such a concentrated benthic suspension (CBS) are driven by a streamwise pressure gradient resulting from the tide. However, in this report a proposed laboratory experiment is simulated in which flow and turbulence in the CBS are driven by a movable bottom screen which is started instantaneously from rest. The aims of the calculations are to show the feasibility of this laboratory experiment, to carry out a sensitivity analysis and, in future work, to compare with experimental results. Damping functions accounting for the reduction in turbulent exchange caused by density stratification are calibrated using results of entrainment experiments with two-fluid systems reported in the literature. The adopted modelof the rheological behaviour of the CBS is of the Herschel-Bulkley type. In addition, the effects of hindered settling and sidewall friction are included. Entrainment rates are found to be particularly sensitive to the speed of the screen and the excess weight of the sediment, whereas the rheological model has little influence.

Adopting a 1DV numerical model including the standard k-eps turbulence model, Winterwerp et al. (1999) calculated a saturation concentration for an initially uniform distribution of fine sediment concentration in steady flow. At concentrations exceeding the saturation concentration the concentration profile collapsed and all sediment was deposited as fluid mud. In this report similar computations are presented using the Prandtl mixing-length model. New expressions for the damping functions accounting for buoyancy effects are derived from three conditions: 1) in the case of equilibrium the concentration should be bounded for all gradient Richardson numbers, 2) the mathematical model should be stable and 3) the relationship between flux Richardson number and gradient Richardson number should agree with empirical data. Numerical results obtained with this model, such as the saturation concentration, agree fairly well with those of Winterwerp et al. (1999). It is shown that the saturation concentration is sensitive to the coefficients in the damping functions. This concentration may increase markedly for values of these coefficients that differ from those selected herein.

BESTAND A BEVAT HET HOOFDRAPPORT EN BESTAND B BEVAT DE BIJLAGEN Voor het optimaal beladen van sleephopperzuigers is het belangrijk om inzicht te hebben in de processen die plaats hebben in het beun van een sleephopperzuiger. Een van de deel-processen is het bezinken van zand in een hoog geconcentreerd zandwater mengsel onder invloed van turbulentie. Het doel van dit rapport is om dit bezinkproces in kaart te brengen. Om dit doel te bereiken zijn er proeven uitgevoerd in een proefopstelling waarin bezinkproeven zijn uit te voeren. Gedurende de proeven is de mate van turbulentie in de kolom, de beginconcentratie van het mengsel en gradatie van het zand gevarieerd. Hierdoor is inzicht verkregen in de invloed van beide parameters op het bezinkgedrag van verschillende zandsoorten. Tijdens de proeven worden de concentraties op 12 punten over de hoogte gemeten. Uit deze data is vervolgens een concentratieprofiel over de hoogte bepaald. Tenslotte is er gekeken in hoeverre deze data overeenkomen met het gemaakte computermodel dat dit proces kan simuleren. Uit de proeven in water die dienden om het turbulentieniveau in kaart te brengen kwamen de volgende zaken naar voren: • Uit de proefresultaten is gebleken dat de turbulentie die in de kolom wordt opgewekt redelijk homogeen over de hoogte verdeeld is en in de x- en z- richting van dezelfde orde grootte is. De belangrijkste conclusies, die uit de proeven met de uniforme zandfracties volgen, zijn: • De werkelijke karakteristieke korreldiameter verschilt aanzienlijk van de volgens de leverancier opgegeven karakteristieke korreldiameter. • De verticale turbulente snelheidsintensiteit (V_z;rms) blijkt onafhankelijk van de concentratie te zijn en afhankelijk van het turbulentieinstellingen. • De gemeten valsnelheden verschillen duidelijk van de volgens theorieën berekende valsnelheden. De gecombineerde theorie van Ruby en AI-Dibouni geeft de beste benadering van de meetresultaten. • De turbulente diffusiecoëfficiënt is niet eenvoudig uit de meetdata te berekenen. • Uit het door ons gemaakte model volgt dat de beginconcentratie, de zandsoort en het turbulentieniveau van invloed zijn op de grootte van de turbulente diffusiecoëfficiënt. De proeven met de min of meer natuurlijke zandverdeling maakten het volgende duidelijk: • De valsnelheid van de karakteristieke korrels van het mengsel is ongeveer gelijk aan die van de karakteristieke korrels van een uniforme zandfractie met gelijke karakteristieke korrelgrootte. • Een relatief hoog turbulentieniveau in de kolom heeft tot gevolg dat de ontmenging minder groot zal zijn. Ook leidt een hoger turbulentieniveau tot een tragere ontmenging. • De beginconcentratie is niet van invloed op de mate van ontmenging. Wel leidt een hogere beginconcentratie tot een verlaging van de snelheid waarmee de ontmenging plaatsvindt. De conclusie is dat het beschrijven van het bezinkgedrag van korrels in een hooggeconcentreerd zand-watermengsel wel mogelijk is. Er is echter verdere analyse van de data nodig en er zijn eventueel meer proeven nodig om het verband tussen het turbulentieniveau (uitgedrukt in bijvoorbeeld V_rms) en de turbulente diffusiecoëfficiënt (E) beter te kunnen beschrijven. Het model kan verder verbeterd worden door E niet constant over de hoogte te veronderstellen zoals dat bij het huidige model het geval is.

Jachthavens aan rivieren slibben steeds verder dicht. Als gevolg hiervan lopen de kosten voor het beheer van een dergelijke haven zo hoog op dat enkele havens misschien zelfs moeten sluiten. Daarom is er landelijk een onderzoek gestart om te bezien of de aanslibbing verminderd kan worden door aanpassing van de vormgeving van de haven. Aanslibbing van een haven is afhankelijk van het uitwisselingsdebiet tussen haven en rivier. In principe komen daar drie mechanismen voor in aanmerking, te weten: • Het getijmechanisme • Het dichtheidsmechanisme • Het stromingsmechanisme In dit onderzoek komt alleen het stromingsmechanisme aan de orde, omdat het getij afwezig is en er verwaarloosbare dichtheidsverschillen zijn tussen water in de rivier en water in de haven. Aan de bovenstroomse zijde van de havenmond ontstaat als gevolg van wervelvorming een menglaag, die een primaire neer aandrijft in de havenmond. Deze primaire neer drijft op zijn beurt weer een secundaire neer aan in het havenbekken. Via dit systeem wordt het sedimentrijke water van de rivier de haven ingebracht, waar het bezinkt. Om te onderzoeken of er maatregelen genomen kunnen worden om de aanslibbing in jachthavens te verminderen is een schaalmodel gebruikt van twee jachthavens aan de Maas te Roermond, 't Steel en La Bonne Aventure. Hierin zijn diverse in dit onderzoek ontwikkelde ingrepen toegepast, zoals een geleidescherm, een paalscherm en een gekromde drempel in de havenmond, en vervolgens is hun effectiviteit gemeten. Het uitgangspunt was de bestaande situatie met een gemiddelde waterstand, maar omdat de Maas nogal eens te kampen heeft met hoogwater is ook de situatie gedurende hoogwater beschouwd. Na het vergelijken van de metingen is gebleken dat het mogelijk is om een aanzienlijke reductie in aanslibbing te bewerkstelligen. Het geleidescherm geeft een reductie van ca. 25%, het paalscherm een reductie van ca. 50%, de gekromde drempel een reductie van ca. 70% en een combinatie van het paalscherm met de gekromde drempel geeft zelfs een reductie van ca. 90%. Deze reducties gelden alleen in de niet-overstroomde situatie. Gesteld kan worden dat het zeker mogelijk is om een vermindering van aanslibbing te realiseren. Hoewel natuurlijk nog afgewacht moet worden wat de reducties in werkelijkheid zullen worden.

A derivation is presented of a general cross-section averaged model of longitudinal dispersion, which is based on the notion of the advection of tracer particles. Particle displacement length and particle travel time are conceived as stochastic variables, and a joint probability density function is introduced to arrive at an integral advection model for the cross-section averaged concentration. Starting from this model special advection models known from the literature are obtained in a consistent way. These models, in which only the travel time is a stochastic variable, predict skewed tracer concentration contributions of the kind observed in the field, but satisfy the condition of approach to Gaussian behaviour for large spreading times. A relationship between the particle displacement length and the longitudinal dispersion coefficient is derived. The application of advection models to non-uniform rivers and the relationship with the dead-zone model are outlined.

A research project was started at the Delft University of Technology in order to study the interaction between waves as well as a current and a muddy bed. For this purpose several experiments were made on artificial clays. In the present report only flume experiments on China Clay are discussed. In the experiments made special attention was paid to the liquefaction mechanism, the turbulence structure over a liquefied bed and the influence of liquefaction on the wave damping. The experimental results showed, among other things, that a layer of fluid mud was generated as soon as the wave height exceeded a certain threshold value. This value increases with the consolidation period. Pressure induced shear stresses in the bed calculated under the assumption of China Clay being a poro-elastic material, show that these stresses play an important role in the liquefaction process of mud. The waves were significantly damped as soon as a layer of fluid mud was generated. The damping was only little influenced by a current. Furthermore, it was observed that the fluid mud was transported very easily by a current and hardly any mud was entrained into the water layer during this process. The velocity measurements showed that the turbulence intensities decreased in a stationary current when a layer of fluid mud was present, which result corresponds with visual observations made when dye was injected into the flow. The observations and pressure measurements usually made at the transparent sidewall of a set-up are not representative of the actual physical processes away from the sidewalls. Only measurements carried out far from a wall give a quantitative description of the processes inside the bed. Pore-pressure measurements showed a transient decrease, possibly caused by the break down of the aggregate structure, succeeded by a gradual build-up of an excess pore pressure so as to compensate for the vanishing effective stress. The wave damping and velocity amplitudes in the fluid mud which were determined during the experiments, correspond wen with the calculated results using a modified version of Gade's model (1958).

An entrainment model for fluid mud is derived by integrating the equation for turbulent kinetic energy across the mixed layer and introducing some modelling assumptions. The resulting entrainment model is similar to models of mixed-layer deepening in lakes and reservoirs, but in addition accounts for the work needed to entrain bed material. Two basically different flow conditions are considered: (1) flow in the water layer but no flow in the fluid-mud layer, and (2) flow in both layers driven by a tide-induced streamwise pressure gradient. In the first case, which applies to laboratory experiments in an annular flume, for example, the water layer is the turbulent mixed layer that erodes the quiescent fluid-mud layer. In the second case the fluid-mud layer is the mixed layer, which deepens because of entrainment of water from the overlying water layer. The water layer then is the quiescent layer. The viscous drag of the quiescent layer due to the flow in the mixed layer, which effect can play a part in laboratory experiments, is accounted for. Empirical model coefficients are obtained from the literature.

Wanneer in een vat een korrelvormige vaste stof met een vloeistof wordt gemengd en de dichtheid van de vaste stof groter is dan die van de vloeistof, zal de stof bezinken. In dat geval zullen er na verloop van tijd boven een bepaald niveau in het vat geen deeltjes van de vaste stof voorkomen waarvan de valsnelheid groter is dan de afstand van dat niveau tot het vloeistofoppervlak gedeeld door de verstreken tijd. Door nu op een bepaald niveau (onderin het vat) op bepaalde tijdstippen het gewicht te meten van het materiaal dat op een schaaltje is bezonken, kan een valsnelheidsverdeling worden bepaald. Voor de bepaling van valsnelheden van korrelige materialen in water is dit een gebruikelijke methode. In het Laboratorium voor Vloeistofmechanica wordt deze methode gebruikt voor de bepaling van valsnelheidsverdelingen van slib en andere materialen met afmetingen van 2 tot 64 micrometer. Tot nu toe gebeurde dit met de z.g. pipetmethode volgens Andreasen-Eisenwein. Om de bepaling volgens deze laatste methode goed uit te voeren moet men over voldoende ervaring beschikken. Bovendien is de methode erg arbeidsintensief en vereist zij een hoge graad van nauwkeurigheid bij de uitvoering. De in de handel zijnde apparatuur waar de bepalingen meer geautomatiseerd mee uitgevoerd kunnen worden is erg kostbaar (o.a. Sedimentograph, laser partiele analyser). De Sedibalans van de firma Sartorius, die eveneens voor dit doel geschikt zou zijn, is niet meer verkrijgbaar. Er is daarom gekozen voor het bouwen van een sedimentatiebalans, de Sedimet, waarmee de bepalingen op eenvoudige wijze kunnen worden uitgevoerd. In dit rapport wordt de Sedimet beschreven. Besproken worden ontwerp, meetprincipe, berekeningsmethode, software, testresultaten en foutenanalyse. Daarnaast is een handleiding toegevoegd. Omdat de valsnelheid afhankelijk is van onder meer de vloeistofeigenschappen worden de valsnelheden omgerekend naar equivalente deeltjesgrootten van de vaste stof.

The theory of hindered settling from a suspension developed by Kynch (1952) is known to satisfactorily describe the settling and primary consolidation of mud. This theory, in which effective stresses are disregarded, is reviewed for this purpose, and some analytical results for interface formation and consolidation are obtained. In particular it is shown, for an empirical expression relating settling velocity w to concentration by volume c given by w/wp = (1 - c)^Beta. Here wp is the settling velocity of a single partiele or floc and Beta is an empirical coefficient. This result is in accord with observations described in the literature (Krone, 1962). An experiment to further test the applicability of Kynch' theory to the consolidation of mud is proposed.

In this article some field observations, made in recent years, of internal wave motions in a density-stratified estuary are presented, In order to facilitate the appreciation of the results, and to make some quantitative comparisons, the relevant theory is also summarized. Furthermore, the origins of stratification in estuaries is briefly discussed.

Dit rapport geeft een beknopte analyse van de verdunning en verspreiding van zout vanuit een gepland depot voor ontzilt zeezand in het Haringvliet. Beschouwd zijn de initiële menging van het zout bij terugwinnen van het zand, de verspreiding door stroming en turbulentie bij geopende spuisluis, en de verspreiding ten gevolge van door wind geïnduceerde stroming en turbulentie bij gesloten spuisluis. De berekeningsresultaten hebben betrekking op de dieptegemiddelde zoutconcentratie als functie van de plaats. De toestand met gesloten spuisluis blijkt de hoogste concentraties op te leveren. Dit geldt met name als een periode met windstilte optreedt. De voor de gekozen gevallen berekende concentraties zijn echter alle relatief laag, onder meer doordat de initiële verdunning aanzienlijk is. Er wordt kort ingegaan op de gevolgen voor de extra zoutbelasting van het Haringvliet.
