The performance of superconducting qubits is often limited by dissipation and two-level systems (TLS) losses. The dominant sources of these losses are believed to originate from amorphous materials and defects at interfaces and surfaces, likely as a result of fabrication processes or ambient exposure. Here, we explore a novel wet chemical surface treatment at the Josephson junction-substrate and the substrate-air interfaces by replacing a buffered oxide etch (BOE) cleaning process with one that uses hydrofluoric acid followed by aqueous ammonium fluoride. We show that the ammonium fluoride etch process results in a statistically significant improvement in median $\text{T}_1$ by $\sim22\%$ ($p=0.002$), and a reduction in the number of strongly-coupled TLS in the tunable frequency range. Microwave resonator measurements on samples treated with the ammonium fluoride etch prior to niobium deposition also show $\sim33\%$ lower TLS-induced loss tangent compared to the BOE treated samples. As the chemical treatment primarily modifies the Josephson junction-substrate interface and substrate-air interface, we perform targeted chemical and structural characterizations to examine materials' differences at these interfaces and identify multiple microscopic changes that could contribute to decreased TLS.

The effect of annealing on the superconducting properties of niobium single crystals cut from the same master boule was studied by local and global magnetic measurements, as well as scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The formation of large hydride precipitates was observed in unannealed samples. The variation in structural and magnetic properties was studied after annealing under high vacuum at 800 C, 1400 C, and near the melting point of niobium (2477 C) for a few seconds. The initial samples had a high hydrogen content. Polarized optics and magneto-optical studies show that the formation of large niobium hydride precipitates is suppressed already by 800 C annealing. However, the overall superconducting properties in the annealed samples did not improve after annealing, and in fact, worsened. The superconducting transition temperature decreased, the upper critical field increased, and the pinning strength increased. Parallel studies were conducted using STM, where the sample was annealed initially at 400 C, measured, annealed again at 1700 C, and measured again. These studies revealed a ``dirty'' superconducting gap with a significant spatial variation of tunneling conductance after annealing at 400 C. The clean gap was recovered after annealing at 1700 C. It is likely that these results are due to oxygen redistribution near the surface, which is always covered by oxide layers in as-grown crystals. Overall, the results indicate that vacuum annealing at least up to 1400 C, while expected to remove a large amount of hydrogen, introduces additional nanosized defects, perhaps hydride precipitates, that act as efficient pair-breaking and pinning centers.

Nanoscale structural and electronic heterogeneities are prevalent in condensed matter physics. Investigating these heterogeneities in three dimensions (3D) has become an important task for understanding their material properties. To provide a tool to unravel the connection between nanoscale heterogeneity and macroscopic emergent properties in magnetic materials, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) is combined with X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD). A vector tomography algorithm has been developed to reconstruct the full 3D magnetic vector field without any prior assumptions or knowledge. 2D STXM projections of single crystalline \ndfeb\ pillars are recorded for two different sample tilt angles while rotating around the vertical tomographic axis using $120$ nm X-ray beams with left and right circular polarization. Image alignment and iterative registration has been implemented, based on the 2D STXM projections for the two tilts. Dichroic projections obtained from difference images are used for the tomographic reconstruction to obtain the 3D magnetization distribution at the nanoscale., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures

We demonstrate a transformational technique for controllably tuning the electrical properties of fabricated thermally oxidized amorphous aluminum-oxide tunnel junctions. Using conventional test equipment to apply an alternating bias to a heated tunnel barrier, giant increases in the room temperature resistance, greater than 70%, can be achieved. The rate of resistance change is shown to be strongly temperature-dependent, and is independent of junction size in the sub-micron regime. In order to measure their tunneling properties at mK temperatures, we characterized transmon qubit junctions treated with this alternating-bias assisted annealing (ABAA) technique. The measured frequencies follow the Ambegaokar-Baratoff relation between the shifted resistance and critical current. Further, these studies show a reduction of junction-contributed loss on the order of $\approx 2 \times10^{-6}$, along with a significant reduction in resonant- and off-resonant-two level system defects when compared to untreated samples. Imaging with high-resolution TEM shows that the barrier is still predominantly amorphous with a more uniform distribution of aluminum coordination across the barrier relative to untreated junctions. This new approach is expected to be widely applicable to a broad range of devices that rely on amorphous aluminum oxide, as well as the many other metal-insulator-metal structures used in modern electronics.

We present a novel transmon qubit fabrication technique that yields systematic improvements in T$_1$ relaxation times. We fabricate devices using an encapsulation strategy that involves passivating the surface of niobium and thereby preventing the formation of its lossy surface oxide. By maintaining the same superconducting metal and only varying the surface structure, this comparative investigation examining different capping materials, such as tantalum, aluminum, titanium nitride, and gold, and film substrates across different qubit foundries definitively demonstrates the detrimental impact that niobium oxides have on the coherence times of superconducting qubits, compared to native oxides of tantalum, aluminum or titanium nitride. Our surface-encapsulated niobium qubit devices exhibit T$_1$ relaxation times 2 to 5 times longer than baseline niobium qubit devices with native niobium oxides. When capping niobium with tantalum, we obtain median qubit lifetimes above 300 microseconds, with maximum values up to 600 microseconds, that represent the highest lifetimes to date for superconducting qubits prepared on both sapphire and silicon. Our comparative structural and chemical analysis suggests why amorphous niobium oxides may induce higher losses compared to other amorphous oxides. These results are in line with high-accuracy measurements of the niobium oxide loss tangent obtained with ultra-high Q superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities. This new surface encapsulation strategy enables even further reduction of dielectric losses via passivation with ambient-stable materials, while preserving fabrication and scalable manufacturability thanks to the compatibility with silicon processes.

Niobium thin films on silicon substrate used in the fabrication of superconducting qubits have been characterized using scanning and transmission electron microscopy, electrical transport, magnetization, quasiparticle spectroscopy, and real-space real-time magneto-optical imaging. We study niobium films to provide an example of a comprehensive analytical set that may benefit superconducting circuits such as those used in quantum computers. The films show outstanding superconducting transition temperature of $T_{c}=9.35$ K and a fairly clean superconducting gap, along with superfluid density enhanced at intermediate temperatures. These observations are consistent with the recent theory of anisotropic strong-coupling superconductivity in Nb. However, the response to the magnetic field is complicated, exhibiting significantly irreversible behavior and insufficient heat conductance leading to thermo-magnetic instabilities. These may present an issue for further improvement of transmon quantum coherence. Possible mitigation strategies are discussed.

Quantum information science harnesses the principles of quantum mechanics to realize computational algorithms with complexities vastly intractable by current computer platforms. Typical applications range from quantum chemistry to optimization problems and also include simulations for high energy physics. The recent maturing of quantum hardware has triggered preliminary explorations by several institutions (including Fermilab) of quantum hardware capable of demonstrating quantum advantage in multiple domains, from quantum computing to communications, to sensing. The Superconducting Quantum Materials and Systems (SQMS) Center, led by Fermilab, is dedicated to providing breakthroughs in quantum computing and sensing, mediating quantum engineering and HEP based material science. The main goal of the Center is to deploy quantum systems with superior performance tailored to the algorithms used in high energy physics. In this Snowmass paper, we discuss the two most promising superconducting quantum architectures for HEP algorithms, i.e. three-level systems (qutrits) supported by transmon devices coupled to planar devices and multi-level systems (qudits with arbitrary N energy levels) supported by superconducting 3D cavities. For each architecture, we demonstrate exemplary HEP algorithms and identify the current challenges, ongoing work and future opportunities. Furthermore, we discuss the prospects and complexities of interconnecting the different architectures and individual computational nodes. Finally, we review several different strategies of error protection and correction and discuss their potential to improve the performance of the two architectures. Superconducting thin films of niobium have been extensively employed in transmon qubit architectures. Although these architectures have demonstrated remarkable improvements in recent years, further improvements in performance through materials engineering will aid in large-scale deployment. Here, we use information retrieved from secondary ion mass spectrometry and electron microscopy to conduct a detailed assessment of the surface oxide that forms in ambient conditions for transmon test qubit devices patterned from a niobium film. We observe that this oxide exhibits a varying stoichiometry with NbO and NbO$_2$ found closer to the niobium film and Nb$_2$O$_5$ found closer to the surface. In terms of structural analysis, we find that the Nb$_2$O$_5$ region is semicrystalline in nature and exhibits randomly oriented grains on the order of 1-2 nm corresponding to monoclinic N-Nb$_2$O$_5$ that are dispersed throughout an amorphous matrix. Using fluctuation electron microscopy, we are able to map the relative crystallinity in the Nb$_2$O$_5$ region with nanometer spatial resolution. Through this correlative method, we observe that amorphous regions are more likely to contain oxygen vacancies and exhibit weaker bonds between the niobium and oxygen atoms. Based on these findings, we expect that oxygen vacancies likely serve as a decoherence mechanism in quantum systems., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

New determination of the magnetic anisotropy from single crystals of (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$B alloys are presented. The anomalous temperature dependence of the anisotropy constant is discussed using the standard Callen-Callen theory, which is shown to be insufficient to explain the experimental results. A more material specific study using first-principles calculations with disordered moments approach gives a much more consistent interpretation of the experimental data. Since the intrinsic properties of the alloys with $x=0.3-0.35$ are promising for permanent magnets applications, initial investigation of the extrinsic properties are described, in particular the crystallization of melt spun ribbons with Cu, Al, and Ti additions. Previous attempts at developing a significant hysteresis have been unsuccessful in this system. Our melt-spinning experiment indicates that this system shows rapid crystallization.

Phase selection in Ti-Zr-Hf-Al high-entropy alloys was investigated by in-situ high-energy X$-$ray diffraction, single-crystal X$-$ray diffraction, and density-functional theory based electronic-structure methods that address disorder and vacancies, predicting formation enthalpy and chemical short-range order (SRO). Samples with varying Al content were synthesized, characterized, and computationally assessed to ascertain the composition-dependent phase selection, as increased Al content often acts as a stabilizer of a body-centered-cubic structure. Equiatomic TiZrHfAl was especially interesting due to its observed bcc superstructure - a variant of $\gamma-$brass with 4 vacancies per cell (not 2 as in $\gamma-$brass). We highlight how vacancy ordering mediates selection of this variant of $\gamma-$brass, which is driven by vacancy-atom SRO that dramatically suppress all atomic SRO. As vacancies are inherent in processing refractory systems, we expect that similar discoveries await in other high entropy alloys or in revisiting older experimental data., Comment: 19 Pages, 7 Figures, 3 Table

Real-space topological magnetic structures such as skyrmions and merons are promising candidates for information storage and transport. However, the microscopic mechanisms that control their formation and evolution are still not clear. Here, using in-situ Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, we demonstrate that skyrmion crystals (SkXs) can nucleate, grow, and evolve from the conical phase in the same ways that real nanocrystals form from vapors or solutions. More intriguingly, individual skyrmions can also "reproduce" by division in a mitosis-like process that allows them to annihilate SkX lattice imperfections, which is not available to crystals made of mass-conserving particles. Combined string method and micromagnetic calculations show that competition between repulsive and attractive interactions between skyrmions governs particle-like SkX growth, but non-conservative SkX growth appears to be defect-mediated. Complex polar structures of incommensurate modulations (ICMs) are revealed in chemically modified PbZrO$_3$ perovskite antiferroelectrics using advanced transmission electron microscopy techniques. The Pb-cation displacements, previously assumed to arrange in a fully-compensated antiparallel fashion, are found to be either antiparallel but with different magnitudes, or in a nearly orthogonal arrangement in adjacent stripes in the ICMs. Ab initio calculations corroborate the low-energy state of these arrangements. Our discovery corrects the atomic understanding of ICMs in PbZrO$_3$-based perovskite antiferroelectrics.

Elastocaloric cooling, which exploits the latent heat released and absorbed as stress-induced phase transformations are reversibly cycled in shape memory alloys, has recently emerged as a frontrunner in non-vapor-compression cooling technologies. The intrinsically high thermodynamic efficiency of elastocaloric materials is limited only by work hysteresis. Here, we report on creating high-performance low-hysteresis elastocaloric cooling materials via additive manufacturing of Titanium-Nickel (Ti-Ni) alloys. Contrary to established knowledge of the physical metallurgy of Ti-Ni alloys, intermetallic phases are found to be beneficial to elastocaloric performances when they are combined with the binary Ti-Ni compound in nanocomposite configurations. The resulting microstructure gives rise to quasi-linear stress-strain behaviors with extremely small hysteresis, leading to enhancement in the materials efficiency by a factor of five. Furthermore, despite being composed of more than 50% intermetallic phases, the reversible, repeatable elastocaloric performance of this material is shown to be stable over one million cycles. This result opens the door for direct implementation of additive manufacturing to elastocaloric cooling systems where versatile design strategy enables both topology optimization of heat exchangers as well as unique microstructural control of metallic refrigerants., Comment: 38 pages, 3 figures, 8 supplementary figures, 1 supplementary table

Alnico is a prime example of a finely tuned nanostructure whose magnetic properties are intimately connected to magnetic annealing (MA) during spinodal transformation and subsequent lower temperature annealing (draw) cycles. Using a combination of transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography, we show how these critical processing steps affect the local composition and nanostructure evolution with impact on magnetic properties. The nearly 2-fold increase of intrinsic coercivity ($H_\text{ci}$) during the draw cycle is not adequately explained by chemical refinement of the spinodal phases. Instead, increased Fe-Co phase ($\alpha_1$) isolation, development of Cu-rich spheres/rods/blades and additional $\alpha_1$ rod precipitation that occurs during the MA and draw, likely play a key role in $H_\text{ci}$ enhancement. Chemical ordering of the Al-Ni-phase ($\alpha_2$) and formation of Ni-rich ($\alpha_3$) may also contribute. Unraveling of the subtle effect of these nano-scaled features is crucial to understanding on how to improve shape anisotropy in alnico magnets.

To reduce material and processing costs of commercial permanent magnets and to attempt to fill the empty niche of energy products, 10 - 20 MGOe, between low-flux (ferrites, alnico) and high-flux (Nd2Fe14B- and SmCo5-type) magnets, we report synthesis, structure, magnetic properties and modeling of Ta, Cu and Fe substituted CeCo5. Using a self-flux technique, we grew single crystals of I - Ce15.1Ta1.0Co74.4Cu9.5, II - Ce16.3Ta0.6Co68.9Cu14.2, III - Ce15.7Ta0.6Co67.8Cu15.9, IV - Ce16.3Ta0.3Co61.7Cu21.7 and V - Ce14.3Ta1.0Co62.0Fe12.3Cu10.4. X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) showed that these materials retain a CaCu5 substructure and incorporate small amounts of Ta in the form of \dumb-bells", filling the 2e crystallographic sites within the 1D hexagonal channel with the 1a Ce site, whereas Co, Cu and Fe are statistically distributed among the 2c and 3g crystallographic sites. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) examinations provided strong evidence of the single-phase nature of the as-grown crystals, even though they readily exhibited significant magnetic coercivitie of ~1.6 - ~1.8 kOe caused by Co-enriched, nano-sized, structural defects and faults that can serve as pinning sites. Formation of the "composite crystal" during the heat treatment creates a 3D array of extended defects within a primarily single grain single crystal, which greatly improves its magnetic characteristics. Possible causes of the formation of the "composite crystal" may be associated with Ta atoms leaving matrix interstices at lower temperatures and/or matrix degradation induced by decreased miscibility at lower temperatures. Fe strongly improves both the Curie temperature and magnetization of the system resulting in (BH)max:~13 MGOe at room temperature., Comment: 17 pages, 18 figures

Single crystals of AlFe$_{2}$B$_{2}$ have been grown using the self flux growth method and then measured the structural properties, temperature and field dependent magnetization, and temperature dependent electrical resistivity at ambient as well as high pressure. The Curie temperature of AlFe$_{2}$B$_{2}$ is determined to be $274$~K. The measured saturation magnetization and the effective moment for paramagnetic Fe-ion indicate the itinerant nature of the magnetism with a Rhode-Wohlfarth ratio $ \frac{M_{C}}{M_{sat}}\approx 1.14$. Temperature dependent resistivity measurements under hydrostatic pressure shows that transition temperature \textit{T$_C$} is suppressed down to 255 K for $p = 2.24$~GPa pressure with a suppression rate of $\sim -8.9$~K/GPa. The anisotropy fields and magnetocrystalline anisotropy constants are in reasonable agreement with density functional theory calculations., Comment: 12 pages, 12 figures

A metastable {\epsilon}-Al60Sm11 phase appears during the initial devitrification of as-quenched Al-10.2 at.% Sm glasses. The {\epsilon} phase is nonstoichiometric in nature since Al occupation is observed on the 16f Sm lattice sites. Scanning transmission electron microscopic images reveal profound spatial correlation of Sm content on these sites, which cannot be explained by the "average crystal" description from Rietveld analysis of diffraction data. Thermodynamically favorable configurations, established by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations based on a cluster-expansion model, also give qualitatively different correlation functions from experimental observations. On the other hand, molecular dynamics simulations of the growth of {\epsilon}-Al60Sm11 in undercooled liquid show that when the diffusion range of Sm is limited to ~ 4 {\AA}, the correlation function of the as-grown crystal structure agrees well with that of the STEM images. Our results show that kinetic effects, especially the limited diffusivity of Sm atoms plays the fundamental role in determining the nonstoichiometric site occupancies of the {\epsilon}-Al60Sm11 phase during the crystallization process., Comment: 13 pages, 10 figures, submitted

Further property enhancement of alnico, an attractive near-term, non-rare-earth permanent magnet alloy system, primarily composed of Al, Ni, Co, and Fe, relies on improved morphology control and size refinement of its complex spinodally decomposed nanostructure that forms during heat-treatment. Using a combination of transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography techniques, this study evaluates the magnetic properties and microstructures of an isotropic 32.4Fe-38.1Co-12.9Ni-7.3Al-6.4Ti-3.0Cu (wt.$\%$) alloy in terms of processing parameters such as annealing temperature, annealing time, application of an external magnetic field, as well as low-temperature "draw" annealing. Optimal spinodal morphology and spacing is formed within a narrow temperature and time range ($\sim 840 \unicode{x2103}$ and 10 min during thermal-magnetic annealing (MA). The ideal morphology is a mosaic structure consisting of periodically arrayed $\sim 40$ nm diameter (Fe-Co)-rich rods ($\alpha_1$ phase) embedded in an (Al-Ni)-rich ($\alpha_2$ phase) matrix. A Cu-enriched phase with a size of $\sim$ 3-5 nm is located at the corners of two adjacent $\{110\}$ facets of the $\alpha_1$ phase. The MA process significantly increased remanence ($B_\text{r}$) ($\sim$ 40-70 $\%$) of the alloy due to biased elongation of the $\alpha_1$ phase along the $\langle100\rangle$ crystallographic direction, which is closest in orientation to the applied magnetic field. The optimum magnetic properties of the alloy with an intrinsic coercivity ($H_\text{cj}$) of 1845 Oe and a maximum energy product ($BH_\text{max}$) of 5.9 MGOe were attributed to the uniformity of the mosaic structure.

Micromagnetic simulations of alnico show substantial deviations from Stoner-Wohlfarth behavior due to the unique size and spatial distribution of the rod-like Fe-Co phase formed during spinodal decomposition in an external magnetic field. The maximum coercivity is limited by single-rod effects, especially deviations from ellipsoidal shape, and by interactions between the rods. Both the exchange interaction between connected rods and magnetostatic interaction between rods are considered, and the results of our calculations show good agreement with recent experiments. Unlike systems dominated by magnetocrystalline anisotropy, coercivity in alnico is highly dependent on size, shape, and geometric distribution of the Fe-Co phase, all factors that can be tuned with appropriate chemistry and thermal-magnetic annealing.

The electronic structure and intrinsic magnetic properties of $\text{Fe}_2\text{AlB}_2$-related compounds and their alloys have been investigated using density functional theory. For $\text{Fe}_2\text{AlB}_2$, the crystallographic $a$ axis is the easiest axis, which agrees with experiments. The magnetic ground state of $\text{Mn}_2\text{AlB}_2$ is found to be ferromagnetic in the basal $ab$ plane, but antiferromagnetic along the $c$ axis. All $3d$ dopings considered decrease the magnetization and Curie temperature in $\text{Fe}_2\text{AlB}_2$. Electron doping with Co or Ni has a stronger effect on the decreasing of Curie temperature in $\text{Fe}_2\text{AlB}_2$ than hole doping with Mn or Cr. However, a larger amount of Mn doping on $\text{Fe}_2\text{AlB}_2$ promotes the ferromagnetic to antiferromagnetic transition. A very anisotropic magnetoelastic effect is found in $\text{Fe}_2\text{AlB}_2$: the magnetization has a much stronger dependence on the lattice parameter $c$ than on $a$ or $b$, which is explained by electronic-structure features near the Fermi level. Transport and magnetic studies of PbTaSe$_2$ under pressure suggest existence of two superconducting phases with the low temperature phase boundary at $\sim 0.25$ GPa that is defined by a very sharp, first order, phase transition. The first order phase transition line can be followed via pressure dependent resistivity measurements, and is found to be near 0.12 GPa near room temperature. Transmission electron microscopy and x-ray diffraction at elevated temperatures confirm that this first order phase transition is structural and occurs at ambient pressure near $\sim 425$ K. The new, high temperature / high pressure phase has a similar crystal structure and slightly lower unit cell volume relative to the ambient pressure, room temperature structure. Based on first-principles calculations this structure is suggested to be obtained by shifting the Pb atoms from the $1a$ to $1e$ Wyckoff position without changing the positions of Ta and Se atoms. PbTaSe$_2$ has an exceptionally pressure sensitive, structural phase transition with $\Delta T_s/\Delta P \approx - 1700$ K/GPa near 4 K, this first order transition causes an $\sim 1$ K ($\sim 25 \%$) step - like decrease in $T_c$ as pressure is increased through 0.25 GPa.
