This chapter describes the progress made during the past three decades in the finite size scaling analysis of the critical phenomena of the Anderson transition. The scaling theory of localisation and the Anderson model of localisation are briefly sketched. The finite size scaling method is described. Recent results for the critical exponents of the different symmetry classes are summarised. The importance of corrections to scaling are emphasised. Quantum transport properties in quantum Hall wires in the presence of spatially correlated disordered magnetic fields are investigated numerically. It is found that the correlation drastically changes the transport properties associated with the edge state, in contrast to the naive expectation that the correlation simply reduces the effect of disorder. In the presence of correlation, the separation between the successive conductance plateau transitions becomes larger than the bulk Landau level separation determined by the mean value of the disordered magnetic fields. The transition energies coincide with the Landau levels in an effective magnetic field stronger than the mean value of the disordered magnetic field. For a long wire, the strength of this effective magnetic field is of the order of the maximum value of the magnetic fields in the system. It is shown that the effective field is determined by a part where the stronger magnetic field region connects both edges of the wire., Comment: 7 pages, 10 figures

Quantum transport properties in quantum Hall wires in the presence of spatially correlated random potential are investigated numerically. It is found that the potential correlation reduces the localization length associated with the edge state, in contrast to the naive expectation that the potential correlation increases it. The effect appears as the sizable shift of quantized conductance plateaus in long wires, where the plateau transitions occur at energies much higher than the Landau band centers. The scale of the shift is of the order of the strength of the random potential and is insensitive to the strength of magnetic fields. A Hall effect due to spin chirality in mesoscopic systems is predicted. We consider a 4-terminal Hall system including local spins with geometry of a vortex domain wall, where strong spin chirality appears near the center of vortex. The Fermi energy of the conduction electrons is assumed to be comparable to the exchange coupling energy where the adiabatic approximation ceases to be valid. Our results show a Hall effect where a voltage drop and a spin current arise in the transverse direction. The similarity between this Hall effect and the conventional spin Hall effect in systems with spin-orbit interaction is pointed out., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The relation between the conductivity tensors of Composite Fermions and electrons is extended to second generation Composite Fermions. It is shown that it crucially depends on the coupling matrix for the Chern-Simons gauge field. The results are applied to a model of interacting Composite Fermions that can explain both the anomalous plateaus in spin polarization and the corresponding maxima in the resistivity observed in recent transport experiments.

The dynamics of a domain wall driven by a spin-polarized current in a mesoscopic system is studied numerically. Spin-mixing in the states of the conduction electrons is fully taken into account. When the Fermi energy of the electrons is larger than the exchange energy ($E_{\rm F}>J_{\rm sd}$), the spin precession induces spin wave excitations in the local spins which contribute towards the displacement of the domain wall. The resulting average velocity is found to be much smaller than the one obtained in the adiabatic limit. For $E_{\rm F}

The compressibility of a two-dimensional electron system with spin in a spatially correlated random potential and a quantizing magnetic field is investigated. Electron-electron interaction is treated with the Hartree-Fock method. Numerical results for the influences of interaction and disorder on the compressibility as a function of the particle density and the strength of the magnetic field are presented. Localization-delocalization transitions associated with highly compressible region in the energy spectrum are found at half-integer filling factors. Coulomb blockade effects are found near integer fillings in the regions of low compressibility. The quantum phase diagram of disordered wires in a strong magnetic field is studied as a function of wire width and energy. The two-terminal conductance shows zero-temperature discontinuous transitions between exactly integer plateau values and zero. In the vicinity of this transition, the chiral metal-insulator transition (CMIT), states are identified that are superpositions of edge states with opposite chirality. The bulk contribution of such states is found to decrease with increasing wire width. Based on exact diagonalization results for the eigenstates and their participation ratios, we conclude that these states are characteristic for the CMIT, have the appearance of nonchiral edges states, and are thereby distinguishable from other states in the quantum Hall wire, namely, extended edge states, two-dimensionally (2D) localized, quasi-1D localized, and 2D critical states., Comment: replaced with revised version

We study the tails of the density of states of fermions subject to a random magnetic field with non-zero mean with the Optimum Fluctuation Method (OFM). Closer to the centres of the Landau levels, the density of states is found to be Gaussian, whereas the energy dependence is non-analytic near the lower bound of the spectrum., Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures

We investigate the influence of a perpendicular magnetic field on the spectral and spin properties of a ballistic quasi-one-dimensional electron system with Rashba effect. The magnetic field strongly alters the spin-orbit induced modification to the subband structure when the magnetic length becomes comparable to the lateral confinement. A new subband-dependent energy splitting at k=0 is found which can be much larger than the Zeeman splitting. This is due to the breaking of a combined spin orbital-parity symmetry., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures

The effects of interactions in a 2D electron system in a strong magnetic field of two degenerate Landau levels with opposite spins and at filling factors 1/2 are studied. Using the Chern-Simons gauge transformation, the system is mapped to Composite Fermions. The fluctuations of the gauge field induce an effective interaction between the Composite Fermions which can be attractive in both the particle-particle and in the particle-hole channel. As a consequence, a spin-singlet (s-wave) ground state of Composite Fermions can exist with a finite pair-breaking energy gap for particle-particle or particle-hole pairs. The competition between these two possible ground states is discussed. For long-range Coulomb interaction the particle-particle state is favored if the interaction strength is small. With increasing interaction strength there is a crossover towards the particle-hole state. The localization properties of electron states in the quantum Hall regime are reviewed. The random Landau model, the random matrix model, the tight-binding Peierls model, and the network model of Chalker and Coddington are introduced. Descriptions in terms of equivalent tight-binding Hamiltonians, and the 2D Dirac model, are outlined. Evidences for the universal critical behavior of the localization length are summarized. A short review of the supersymmetric critical field theory is provided. The interplay between edge states and bulk localization properties is investigated. Spin effects in the transport properties of a quantum dot with spin-charge separation are investigated. It is found that the non-linear transport spectra are dominated by spin dynamics. Strong spin polarization effects are observed in a magnetic field. They can be controlled by varying gate and bias voltages. Complete polarization is stable against interactions. When polarization is not complete, it is power-law enhanced by non-Fermi liquid effects., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

An application of an effective numerical algorithm for solving eigenvalue problems which arise in modelling electronic properties of quantum disordered systems is considered. We study the electron states at the localization-delocalization transition induced by a random potential in the framework of the Anderson lattice model. The computation of the interior of the spectrum and corresponding wavefunctions for very sparse, hermitian matrices of sizes exceeding 10^6 x 10^6 is performed by the Lanczos-type method especially modified for investigating statistical properties of energy levels and eigenfunction amplitudes., Comment: 5 pages in pdf-format

We investigate the nonlinear ac transport through a quantum wire with an impurity in the presence of finite range electron-electron interactions. We discuss the influence of the spatial shape of the ac electric field onto transport properties of the system and find that the scaling behavior of the occupation probability of the sidebands depends on the range of the voltage drop., Comment: 4 pages, ndes99.sty, 3 figures

We investigate the dynamical interplay between currents and electromagnetic fields in frequency-dependent transport through a single-channel quantum wire with an impurity potential in the presence of electron-electron interactions. The DC current-voltage characteristics, induced by a driving electric field with frequency Omega, of a one dimensional electron channel with a tunnel barrier is calculated. Electron-electron interaction of finite-range is taken into account. For intermediate interaction strengths, the non-linear differential conductance shows cusp-like minima at bias voltages integer multiples of hbar Omega / e that are a consequence of the finite non-zero range of the interaction but are independent of the shape of the driving electric field. We find an interference effect for electron-phonon interactions in coupled semiconductor quantum dots that can dominate the nonlinear transport properties even for temperatures close to zero. The intradot electron tunnel process leads to a `shake up' of the phonon system and is dominated by a double-slit-like interference effect of spontaneously emitted phonons. The effect is closely related to subradiance of photons (Dicke effect) in a laser-trapped two-ion system and explains the oscillations in the nonlinear current-voltage characteristics of coupled dots observed recently., Comment: to appear in PRL

We show that the low-energy peak in the polarized resonant Raman spectra of quantum wires, which is commonly associated with ``single particle excitations'', can be interpreted as signature of intra-band collective spin excitations. A broad maximum in the resonant depolarized spectra is predicted to exist above the frequency of the spin density excitation, due to simultaneous but independent propagation of spin- and charge-density modes., Comment: 4 pages, accepted for publication in Phys. The complex ac-response of a quasi-one dimensional electron system in the one-band approximation with an interaction potential of finite range is investigated. It is shown that linear response is exact for this model. The influence of the screening of the electric field is discussed. We study the subgap transport properties of a small capacitance normal metal-superconductor tunnel junction coupled to an external electromagnetic environment. Mesoscopic interference between the electrons in the normal metal strongly enhances the subgap conductance with decreasing bias voltage. On the other hand, quantum fluctuations of the environment destroy electronic phase coherence and suppress the subgap conductance at low bias (Coulomb blockade).The competition between charging effects and mesoscopic interference leads to a non-monotonic dependence of the differential subgap conductance on the applied bias voltage. The nearest-neighbor level spacing distribution is numerically investigated by directly diagonalizing disordered Anderson Hamiltonians for systems of sizes up to 100 x 100 x 100 lattice sites. The scaling behavior of the level statistics is examined for large spacings near the delocalization-localization transition and the correlation length exponent is found. By using high-precision calculations we conjecture a new interpolation of the critical cumulative probability, which has size-independent asymptotic form \ln I(s) \propto -s^{\alpha} with \alpha = 1.0 \pm 0.1., Comment: 5 pages, RevTex, 4 figures, to appear in Physical Review Letters

The non linear charge transfer through a tunnel junction between two Luttinger systems is studied for repulsive, finite range interaction between electrons on the same, V_{11}, and on different,V_{12}, sides of the junction. Features of the Coulomb blockade effect are observed if V_{12}=0. We predict a novel interaction induced enhancement of the current if V_{12}>0. The transition matrix elements between the correlated $N$ and $N\!+\!1$ electron states of a quantum dot are calculated by numerical diagonalization. They are the central ingredient for the linear and non--linear transport properties which we compute using a rate equation. The experimentally observed variations in the heights of the linear conductance peaks can be explained. Using the level--spacing distribution and the total probability function of the numbers of levels in a given energy interval we analyze the crossover of the level statistics between the delocalized and the localized regimes. By numerically calculating the electron spectra of systems of up to $32^3$ lattice sites described by the Anderson Hamiltonian it is shown that the distribution $P(s)$ of neighboring spacings is {\em scale- independent} at the metal-insulator transition. For large spacings it has a Poisson-like asymptotic form $P(s)\propto \exp (- A\,s/\Delta )$, where $A \approx 1.9$. At the critical point we obtain a linear relationship between the variance of the number of levels $\langle [\delta n(\varepsilon)]^2 \rangle $ and their average number $\langle n(\varepsilon)\rangle $ within the interval $\varepsilon$. The constant of proportionality is less than unity due to the repulsion of the levels. Both $P(s)$ and $\langle [\delta n(\varepsilon)]^2 \rangle $ are determined by the probability density $Q_{n}(\varepsilon)$ of having exactly $n$ levels in the energy interval $\varepsilon $. The spectral properties of up to four interacting electrons confined within a quasi one--dimensional system of finite length are determined by numerical diagonalization including the spin degree of freedom. The ground state energy is investigated as a function of the electron number and of the system length. The limitations of a description in terms of a capacitance are demonstrated. The energetically lowest lying excitations are physically explained as vibrational and tunneling modes.
