Artist. In over sixty years as a painter and sculptor, George Tsutakawa produced art that creatively combined his observations of nature with forms and styles adapted from Japanese, European, and American traditions. His monumental public fountains are considered his best-known and most influential work.

Judah Leon Magnes (JEW-dah LEE-ahn MAG-nehs) was born in San Francisco to David Magnes and Sophie Abrahamson. His parents had met and married in San Francisco, having emigrated to California from Poland and Prussia, respectively. Magnes spent his boyhood in Oakland, California. Hoping to become a rabbi and scholar, he entered Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1894. After ordination in 1900, he attended the University of Heidelberg in Germany, earning a Ph.D. in 1902. He returned to teach at Hebrew Union College for a year. His first rabbinical position began in 1904 at Temple Emanu-El, a Reform synagogue in New York City.

Henrietta Szold (hehn-ree-EHT-tah zhohld) was the first child born to Benjamin and Sophie Schaar Szold, a year after they arrived in the United States from their native Hungary. Szold’s father, a rabbi for the German-speaking Oheb Shalom synagogue in Baltimore, powerfully influenced his daughter through his attraction to social justice, his love of scholarship, and his dedication to Judaism. From him she learned German, Hebrew, and Talmudic study. She graduated from Western Female High School in 1877, the top student and the only Jewish member of her class. THE EVENT: Racially and economically motivated riots and expulsions directed against Sikh laborers

During the 1930’s, African American women built upon a strong legacy of activism against racism and segregation. To expand their influence during the 1890’s, black women had formed the National Federation of Afro-American Women and the National League of Colored Women. These groups combined in 1896 as the National Association for Colored Women (NACW), which had more than 100,000 members by the mid-1920’s. The Depression weakened the NACW financially, reducing the organization’s effectiveness. To build more powerful leadership for black women, Mary McLeod Bethune, who was the NACW president from 1924 to 1928, began in 1930 to consult with directors of more than two dozen organizations for black women (including the NACW) and promote a forum for their work. The result was the establishment of the National Council for Negro Women with Bethune as its first president and Washington, D.C., as its home.

A Grammy-winning singer and songwriter, k.d. lang achieved success in country as well as alternative pop music while challenging gender stereotypes in the entertainment industry. She was one of the first mainstream musical artists to come out as lesbian, and became a prominent advocate for LGBTQ rights as well as other social causes.
