The aim of this study seeks to investigate potential relationships between Muslim conspiracy beliefs and how participants attribute the likelihood of criminal offences to certain groups (UK citizens and Muslim immigrants). In particular, the study will determine which crimes are more and less likely to be attributed to Muslim immigrant defendants by those who believe conspiracy theories relating to Muslim immigrants.

6. The Effect of Question Repetition within Interviews on Young Children's Eyewitness Recall

Abstract

This study investigated the influence of question repetition and question type (answerable, unanswerable, or opinion seeking) on children's recall. A total of 136 children (5-, 7-, and 9-year-olds) watched a live 15-min presentation. One week later, the children were asked 20 questions that were repeated an additional two times within the interview. Accuracy of children's responses to unanswerable questions declined with repetition. Children were more likely to change a response to an unanswerable question than to an answerable question. Overall, children maintained the same answers to only three-quarters of the repeated questions. The most common pattern of change was for children to change their answer the second time a question was asked and then to maintain that answer when questioned again. The high percentage of changed answers within a single interview has important implications for forensic interviewing.

Abstract

Attrition in child abuse cases is of continuing concern. International research has produced evidence to suggest that the form and quality of the evidence available in many child abuse cases is of insufficient quality to allow progression through the judicial system. Recent revelations have led to an increase in public and professional awareness of the prevalence of child sexual abuse, and how this is managed by the legal and social care systems. The aim of this research was to explore the opinions of ex-Police Officers who had direct experience relating to the management of child abuse cases about the factors affecting case progression. Seven ex-Police Officers were interviewed and the transcribed data were thematically analyzed. The five main themes derived from the data were Global Myths, Assumptions, and Misconceptions; Suitability; Resources; Professionals' Attributes; and Working Together. These themes demonstrated that the primary issues indicated by ex-Police Officers were more about relationships between professionals, an understanding of the child's perspective, and their subsequent involvement in the legal processes than simply being related to a lack of resources. 10. 'Proud to be a Special': A qualitative study exploring the experiences of Special Constables in the UK

Abstract

The paper examines public motivations to volunteer as Special Constables and seeks to understand their experiences when engaging in this role.\ud There is little qualitative research examining the experiences of volunteers and yet such literature is pivotal in supporting positive future engagement of a valuable resource.\ud Six currently serving SCs were interviewed. The semi-structured interviews were analysed\ud qualitatively through thematic analysis.\ud Four main themes emerged: Proud to be a Special, Lines of division, Levels of training, and, Mind the gap. The SCs recognised their role as a utilitarian resource with both positive and negative\ud impacts on Regular Police Officers.\ud The findings highlighted the need for a careful balance between having enough SCs to maintain appropriate policing and yet ensuring opportunity for sufficient experience to develop and implement their skills, successful demonstration of which would support more positive working relationships with Regular Police Officers.
