Contains fulltext : 286889.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access) BACKGROUND: Thrombosis is a frequent and severe complication in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Lupus anticoagulant (LA) is a strong acquired risk factor for thrombosis in various diseases and is frequently observed in patients with COVID-19. Whether LA is associated with thrombosis in patients with severe COVID-19 is currently unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate if LA is associated with thrombosis in critically ill patients with COVID-19. PATIENTS/METHODS: The presence of LA and other antiphospholipid antibodies was assessed in patients with COVID-19 admitted to the ICU. LA was determined with dilute Russell's viper venom time (dRVVT) and LA-sensitive activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT) reagents. RESULTS: Of 169 patients with COVID-19, 116 (69%) tested positive for at least one antiphospholipid antibody upon admission to the ICU. Forty (24%) patients tested positive for LA; of whom 29 (17%) tested positive with a dRVVT, 19 (11%) tested positive with an LA-sensitive aPTT, and 8 (5%) tested positive on both tests. Fifty-eight (34%) patients developed thrombosis after ICU admission. The odds ratio (OR) for thrombosis in patients with LA based on a dRVVT was 2.5 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.1-5.7), which increased to 4.5 (95% CI, 1.4-14.3) in patients at or below the median age in this study (64 years). LA positivity based on a dRVVT or LA-sensitive aPTT was only associated with thrombosis in patients aged less than 65 years (OR, 3.8; 95% CI, 1.3-11.4) and disappeared after adjustment for C-reactive protein. CONCLUSION: Lupus anticoagulant on admission is strongly associated with thrombosis in critically ill patients with COVID-19, especially in patients aged less than 65 years.

Abstract

Different methods of bare metall surface treatment and their effects to the properties of oxide-films are examined. Mechanical and elektrochemical methods including sputtering of aktive elements are discussed. Those oxide-layers are described by the method of hydrogen permeation. The effect of surface roughness becomes visible, certain surface structures seem to hinder permeation through the oxide-layer. When sputtering the surface with some active elements less permeation and good thermocycle-resistance are observed, which is due to the influence of the active elements to the metall-oxide interface and the structure of the oxide layer.

38. Occluding staghorn calcification of the aortic arch and left subclavian artery: case report.

Abstract

A calcified thrombus resembling a staghorn was found in the aortic arch, cast into this shape by the aorta and its branching vessel, the left subclavian, into which it projected for a short distance. Unique, in this case, is the extraordinarily large size of the calcification which was mostly free of the vessel wall, its radiological image, and its location. Digital subtraction angiography led to the diagnosis and was confirmed on computed tomography. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract Background The aim of the present study was to investigate the usability of verbal rating scale anchors in patients suffering from a depressive episode and whether differences between frequency or intensity scales could be determined. Frequency and intensity terms were evaluated concerning their interindividual congruency, intraindividual stability across time, and distinguishability of adjacent terms. Methods In a longitudinal design, 44 patients (age M=39.1, SD=15.2, 68.2% female) with a depressive disorder filled out several established questionnaires (e.g. BDI or SCL-90) and questionnaires containing frequency and intensity terms which should be indicated by the percentage of time or intensity that is reflected by each term at two different measuring times within one week. Data analysis contained t-tests for paired samples and effect sizes d according to Cohen. Results Intensity terms showed weaker intraindividual stability across time as compared to frequency terms. Participants were able to reliably distinguish four frequency and intensity terms at both measuring times. Overall congruency between patients was larger for intensity terms in comparison to frequency terms. Conclusions The present results indicate that both frequency and intensity terms can be applied as verbal anchors for clinical self-report scales. However, if longitudinal assessment is intended, our results indicate that frequency terms should be used as they showed slightly greater stability across time. Generally, the present study suggests that no more than four different verbal anchors should be used together in rating scales as especially older patients and those with low lexical experience would not be able to reasonably differentiate more than these.
