In this paper, an investigation of the interaction of a surface-wave-sustained argon plasma torch with liquids is presented. The plasma is produced by an electromagnetic wave traveling along the plasma–dielectric interface, and at the same time, the plasma is a part of this waveguide structure. Because the interaction of the plasma torch with water (liquid) results in modifications of the properties of both the treated water and the plasma itself, a detailed study of the effects in both media is required. The results of the experimental investigation of a surface-wave-sustained argon plasma torch interaction with liquids show significant changes in the plasma parameters, such as the electron excitation temperature Te and the average rotation temperature Trot. In addition, mechanical waves are produced both in the meniscus surface and in the plasma torch by the interaction between the plasma torch (ionized gas with charged particles and electric field) and the liquid surface, which is different from the effects produced by a neutral gas jet on a liquid surface. As a result of the plasma–water interaction, the water’s chemical and physical characteristics, such as the water conductivity, pH, and H2O2 concentration, are modified. As a possible application for water purification, the performed SWD treatment of model wastewater shows a significant variation in nitrate, ammonium, phosphate, and COD (chemical oxygen demand) concentration as a result of the treatment.

Absolute densities of gaseous products generated by coplanar dielectric barrier discharge in N2/O2 mixtures and in ambient air were determined by UV and VIS optical absorption spectroscopy (OAS). Ozone (O3) and nitrogen oxides (N2O, NO2 and N2O5) were identified as the stable products of the discharge. It was found that the actual product composition strongly depends on the gas temperature. At low input power with a low gas temperature, O3 density was high and the NO2 density was very low. When the input power increased and the gas temperature also increased, then O3 disappeared, while NO2 density started to increase steeply., Pomocí UV-VIS spektroskopie byly stanoveny absolutní koncentrace plynných produktů dielektrického koplanárního výboje ve vzduchu a ve směsi N2/O2. Hlavními produkty byly ozon a oxidy dusíku (N2O, NO2 a N2O5), přičemž jejich koncentrace silně závisí na teplotě. Za nízké teploty (nízkého výkonu( dominuje ozon, za vyšších hodnot pak ozon mizí a dominuje NO2.

In recent years, nanoparticles have emerged as an important player in a broad range of applications, especially thanks to recent advances in their synthesis. The silver and copper nanoparticles are often used due to their antibacterial and fungicidal activities, and this article presents the results of the nanoparticle synthesis using electrical glow discharge generated directly in a volume of their salt solutions. Therefore, there is no influence of air (i.e. reactive nitrogen species) as it is usual in other commonly used approaches. Nanoparticles were prepared under various experimental conditions, and they were characterized by ultraviolet/visible spectrometry, dynamic light scattering, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy. Particles were produced without any surfactant or stabilizing agent, and some of them showed higher resistance against agglomeration during their short-term (days) storage. The nanoparticle formation mechanism was confirmed by the fast camera imaging. Thus, the developed approach can be applied for simple environmentally friendly nanoparticle production for various applications., IV posledních letech je pozorován prudký nárůst aplikací nanočástic, a to zejména díky progresu v jejich přípravě. Stříbrné a měděné nanočástice jsou často užívány pro svou antimikrobiální a antimykotickou aktivitu. Článek prezentuje syntézu těchto annočástic pomocí plazmatu generovaného přímo ve vodném roztoku anorganických solí, tedy bez přístupu vzduchu. Proces přípravy probíhal za různých podmínek. K charakterizaci nanočástic bylo využito UVS-VIS spektrometrie, dynamického rozptylu světla, rentgenovské fotoelektronové spektormetrie avysoce rozlišující skenovací elektronové mikroskopie. Částice byly připravovány bez použití surfaktantů nebo jiných stabilizačních činidel, a některé z nich nevykazovaly po řadu dní aglomerační tendence. Mechanismus vzniku nanočástic byl potvrzen s využitím snímání vysokorychlostní kamerou. Použitý přístup představuje efektivní a přírodě přátelský postup přípravy kovových nanočástic.

Four different cold plasma sources were directly applied onto a 24h inoculum of Candida glabrata inoculated on agar plates, within the limits of in vitro experiment. Their effects were compared and evaluated with respect to the size and stability of the inhibition zones formed in the posttreatment cultivation. The results prove significant inhibitory cold atmospheric-pressure plasma effects on the yeast C. glabrata. The overall inhibitory effects are directly proportional to the treatment time, the applied power, and the overall functioning of the plasma source and indirectly proportional to the initial cell concentration, although this factor was less significant compared to the other examined factors. The unipolar microwave torch was found to be the most effective in the inhibition of C. glabrata., Čtyři různé zdroje studeného plazmatu byly použity pro přímé ošetření 24hodinového inokula kvasinky Candida glabrata na agarových plotnách, v mezích in vitro experimentu. Jejich účinek byl porovnán a vyhodnocen s ohledem na velikost a stabilitu inhibičních zón vytvořených během kultivace po ošetření. Výsledky potvrdily silný inhibiční vliv studeného atmosférického plazmatu na kvasinku C. glabrata. Celkový inhibiční vliv byl přímo úměrný době ošetření, aplikovanému výkonu a celkové funkčnosti plazmového zdroje, naopak byl nepřímo úměrný počáteční koncentraci buněk, přestože byl tento faktor méně významný oproti ostatním studovaným faktorům. Jako nejvíce účinný zdroj pro inhibici kvasinky C. glabrata byl vyhodnocen mikrovlnný pochodňový výboj.

The objective of this research is to describe the impact of different advanced oxidation processes used for the removal of sulfamethoxazole on wastewater quality. Ozone, UV, a combination of ozone and UV, and plasma discharge were employed. Concentrations of sulfamethoxazole were analysed by LC-MS/MS. Chemical and microbiological analyses and ecotoxicological tests were conducted to investigate the quality of treated wastewater. The results of this study show that the most effective technique for the removal of sulfamethoxazole is O3, followed by plasma discharge, O3 + UV and, finally, UV. A significant effect of tested advanced oxidation processes on the chemical composition of wastewater was not observed; however, the number of microorganisms was reduced. In the case of ecotoxicological tests with Lemna minor and crustacean Daphnia magna, a significant negative effect was only observed when plasma was applied.

Plasma synthesis by ethanol decomposition in microwave atmospheric torch is a simple, efficient, single-step scalable method suitable for volume production of graphene nanosheets. In our work, we studied influence of microwave power on several plasma parameters (e.g. gas temperature, concentration of active species) by optical emission spectroscopy (OES), Fourier transform infrared spectrometry (FTIR) and mass spectrometry (MS) to better understand the process of precursor decomposition and graphene formation in the gas phase. We observed significant change in kinetics and influence of input power on ethanol decomposition routes. Results were compared with theoretical model comprising hydrodynamics, plasma, heat transfer and chemical kinetics., Plazmová syntéza rozkladem etanolu v mikrovlnném atmosférickém hořáku je jednoduchá, účinná, jednokroková a škálovatelná metoda vhodná pro objemovou produkci grafenových nanovrstev. V naší práci jsme studovali vliv mikrovlnného výkonu na různé parametry plazmatu (např. teplotu plynu, koncentraci aktivních částic) pomocí optické emisní spektroskopie (OES), infračervené spektrometrie s Fourierovou transformací (FTIR) a hmotnostní spektrometrie (MS), s cílem lépe porozumět procesu rozkladu prekurzoru a tvorby grafenu v plynné fázi. Pozorovali jsme výraznou změnu v kinetice a vliv vstupního výkonu na rozkladné směry etanolu. Výsledky byly porovnány s teoretickým modelem zahrnujícím hydrodynamiku, plazma, přenos tepla a chemickou kinetiku

The paper evaluates concentration of hydrogen peroxide produced by a novel pin-hole plasma source in electrolyte solutions with or without gas addition. An effective production rate of hydrogen peroxide is decreased by the increased argon as well as oxygen flow rate through the plasma region. Further, it is enhanced by higher solution conductivity while it is decreased in the strongly basic conditions with the highest pH values., Práce vyhodnocuje koncentraci peroxidu vodíku produkovanou novým štěrbinovým zdrojem plazmatu v roztocích elektrolytů s a bez přidávaného plynu. Se stoupajícím průtokem argonu i kyslíku efektivní produkční koeficient tvorby peroxidu vodíku klesal. Dále se tento koeficient zvýšil při vyšší vodivosti roztoku, zatímco klesal v silně zásaditém roztoku s nejvyššími hodnotami pH.

Utilization of plasma activated water (PAW) for plant growing is mainly connected with the treatment of seeds and subsequent stimulation of their germination. A potential of PAW isits relatively simple and low-cost preparation that calls for studying its wider application in plantproduction. For this purpose, a pot experiment was realized in order to prove effects of the foliarPAW application on maize growth. The stepped PAW foliar application, carried out in 7-day intervals,led to provable decrease of chlorophyll contents in leaves compared to the distilled water application.The PAW application significantly increased root electrical capacitance, but it had no provable effecton weight of the aboveground biomass. Chlorophyll fluorescence parameters expressing the CO2assimilation rate and variable fluorescence of dark-adapted leaves were provably decreased by PAW,but quantum yield of photosystem II electron transport was not influenced. A provably higheramount of nitrogen was detected in dry matter of plants treated by PAW, but contents of othermacro- and micro-nutrients in the aboveground biomass of maize were not affected. Results of thispilot verification of the PAW application have shown a potential for plant growth optimization andpossibility for its further utilization, especially in combination with liquid fertilizers., Využití plazmatem aktivované vody (PAW) pro růst rostlin je spojen především s ošetřováním semen a následnou stimulací jejich klíčení. Potenciál plazmatem aktivované vody je v její relativně jednoduché a nízkonákladové přípravě, která vybízí k prostudování její široké aplikace v produkci rostlin. Za tímto účelem byl realizován květináčový experiment s cílem potvrdit vliv listové aplikace PAW na růst kukuřice. Stupňovaná listová aplikace PAW uskutečněná v sedmidenních intervalech vedla k průkaznému poklesu obsahu chlorofylu v listech v porovnání s aplikací destilované vody. Aplikace PAW významně zvýšila kořenovou kapacitu, ale neměla průkazný vliv na váhu nadzemní biomasy. Parametry fluorescence chlorofylu vyjadřující stupeň asimilace CO2 a variabilní fluorescence listů v temnu byly aplikací PAW pravděpodobně sníženy, zatímco kvantový výtěžek elektronového transportu fotosystému II ovlivněn nebyl. V sušině rostlin ošetřovaných PAW byl stanoven průkazně vyšší obsah dusíku, ale obsah ostatních makro i mikro živin v nadzemní biomase kukuřice ovlivněn nebyl. Výsledky této pilotní studie aplikace PAW ukázaly potenciál pro optimalizaci růstu rostlin a možnost jejího dalšího využití, zejména v kombinaci s kapalnými hnojivy.

Recently, various cold plasma sources have been tested for their bactericidal and fungicidal effects with respect to their application in medicine and agriculture. The purpose of this work is to study the effects of a 2.45 GHz microwave generated plasma torch on a model yeast example Candida glabrata. The microwave plasma was generated by a surfatron resonator, and pure argon at a constant flow rate of 5 Slm was used as a working gas. Thanks to a high number of active particles generated in low-temperature plasma, this type of plasma has become highly popular, especially thanks to its bactericidal effects. However, its antimycotic effects and mechanisms of fungal inactivation are still not fully understood. Therefore, this study focuses on the antifungal effects of the microwave discharge on Candida glabrata. The main focus is on the measurement and evaluation of changes in inactivation effects caused by varying initial concentration of Candida glabrata cells, applied microwave power and exposure time. The discharge was applied on freshly inoculated colonies of Candida glabrata spread on the agar plates and its inhibitory effects were observed in the form of inhibition zones formed after the subsequent cultivation., V současné době jsou pro své antibakteriální a fungicidní účinky testovány nejrůznější zdroje tzv. studeného plazmatu, a to s ohledem na jejich využití v medicíně a zemědělství. Účelem této práce bylo prostudovat vliv plazmového hořáku generovaného mikrovlnným zdrojem s frekvencí 2,45 GHz na modelové vzorky kvasinek Candida glabrata. Mikrovlnné plazma bylo generováno v surfatronovém rezonátoru při použití čistého argonu jako nosného plynu s konstantním průtokem 5 Slm. Díky vysokému podílu aktivních částic generovaných nízkoteplotním plazmatem se tento druh plazmatu stal vysoce populární, a to zejména díky svým antibakteriálním účinkům. Ovšem jeho antimykotické účinky a mechanismy inaktivace hub a plísní stále nejsou zcela popsány. Proto se tato studie zabývá antimykotickými účinky mikrovlnného výboje na kvasinek Candida glabrata. Hlavní zaměření práce spočívá v měření a vyhodnocení změn inaktivačního účinku způsobených rozdílnou počáteční koncentrací buněk Candida glabrata, dodávaným mikrovlnným výkonem a dobou expozice plazmatem. Výboj se aplikoval na čerstvě naočkované kolonie Candida glabrata rozprostřené na agarových plátech a jeho inhibiční účinek byl pozorován formou inhibičních zón vytvořených po následné kultivaci.

In this work, the potential of a microwave (MW)induced atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) in film deposition of styrene and methyl methacrylate (MMA) precursors is investigated. Plasma properties during the deposition and resultant coating characteristics are studied. Optical emission spectroscopy (OES) results indicate a higher degree of monomer dissociation in the APPJ with increasing power and a carrier gas flow rate of up to 250 standard cubic centimeters per minute (sccm). Computational fluid dynamic (CFD) simulations demonstrate nonuniform monomer distribution near the substrate and the dependency of the deposition area on the monomercontaining gas flow rate. A nonhomogeneous surface morphology and topography of the deposited coatings is also observed using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and SEM. Coating chemical analysis and wettability are studied by XPS and water contact angle (WCA), respectively. A lower monomer flow rate was found to result in a higher C–O/C–C ratio and a higher wettability of the deposited coatings., V této práci je zkoumán potenciál využití mikrovlnně indukovaného plazmového jetu generovaného za atmosférického tlaku (APPJ) při depozici tenkých filmů z prekurzorů styrenu a metyl-metakrylátu (MMA). Studovány jsou vlastnosti plazmatu během depozice a charakterizace výsledných vrstev. Výsledky z optické emisní spektrometrie (OES) ukazují na vysoký stupeň disociace monomeru v APPJ s rostoucím výkonem a při průtoku nosného plynu do 250 sccm. Simulace pomocí metody CFD ukázala na nejednotnou distribuci monomeru v blízkosti substrátu a závislost oblasti depozice na průtoku plynu obsahujícího monomer. Nehomogenní morfologie a topografie povrchu deponované vrstvy byla také pozorována pomocí mikroskopie atomárních sil (AFM) a SEM. Chemická analýza vrstvy a její smáčivost byly studovány pomocí XPS, respektive měření kontaktního úhlu vody (WCA). Bylo zjištěno, že nižší průtok monomeru vede k vyššímu poměru C–O/C–C a vyšší smáčivosti deponované vrstvy.

Recently, the bactericidal and fungicidal effects of plasma-activated water (PAW) have been confirmed for its application in agriculture. Although the PAW application is beneficial in plant growth, no information is available about processes induced by PAW in soil. This paper gives the first experimental results about PAW’s influence on selected physical and physical–chemical properties of soil. PAW was prepared using the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) operating in the multistreamer mode at a frequency of 11 kHz. The total energy consumption was 60 J/ml. The obtained results show minimal changes in the natural water evaporation from the soil exposed to PAW, slower tap water absorption if a higher amount of PAW (16 doses per 10 ml to 90 g of the soil) is applied, as well as water retention in the soil of over 30%. The soil pH remains in the neutral range of values even at the highest applied PAW amount of 1.7 weight of soil, which represents the best conditions with respect to the plant growth. Thus, we can conclude that the PAW application, even at high amounts, has no negative influence on the physical and physical–chemical properties of soil and it can be safely applied in sustainable, environmentally friendly agriculture., V současné době již byly potvrzeny antibakteriální a fungicidní účinky plazmatem aktivované vody (PAW) využitelné v zemědělství. Přestože je aplikace PAW přínosná pro růst rostlin, nejsou zatím dostupné žádné informace o procesech způsobených PAW v půdě. Tento článek poskytuje první experimentální výsledky o vlivu PAW na vybrané fyzikální a fyzikálně-chemické vlastnosti půdy. PAW byla připravena pomocí dielektrického bariérového výboje (DBD) pracujícího ve vícekanálovém módu s frekvencí 11 kHz. Celková spotřeba energie činila 60 J/ml. Získané výsledky ukázaly minimální změny v přirozeném vypařování vody z půdy vystavené účinkům PAW, pomalejší absorpci kohoutkové vody při vyšším množství použité PAW (16 dávek po 10 ml na 90 g půdy) a také zádrž vody v půdě přes 30 %. pH půdy zůstalo v neutrálních hodnotách i při vysokém množství aplikované PAW v hmotnostním poměru 1.7 k půdě, který představuje nejlepší podmínky s ohledem na růst rostlin. Proto můžeme shrnout, že aplikace PAW i ve vysokém množství nemá negativní vliv na fyzikální ani fyzikálně-chemické vlastnosti půdy, a může být tudíž bezpečně aplikována v udržitelném, ekologicky příznivém zemědělství.

In this study the effects of water treatment by surface-wave-sustained plasma torch at 2.45 GHz are studied. The changes of the plasma characteristics during the interaction with the water and water physical and chemical characteristics modification as a result of the plasma treatment. In addition, deactivation of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria in suspension are registered., Práce studuje účinky plazmové trysky s povrchově vázanou vlnou při 2,45 GHz v oblasti čištění vody. Výsledkem plazmového ošetření jsou změny jak v charakteristice plazmatu během jeho interakce s vodou, tak změny fyzikálních a chemických vlastností vody. Dále byla sledována deaktivace Gram pozitivních a Gram negativních bakterií v suspenzi.
