Dynamic inflow describes the effect of load overshooting due to a fast change in rotor loading. This effect results from the inertia of the global flow field which only adapts slowly to a fast variation in pitch angle or local wind velocity. This effect is still not fully understood and one of the main approaches to enhance the understanding are wind tunnel experiments with scaled wind turbines. The objective here is to present and discuss the recent experiments on dynamic inflow due to gusts in the turbulent wind tunnel in the WindLab of the University of Oldenburg.

The turbulent conditions a wind energy converter is working in are resulting in strong angle of attack (AoA) fluctuations on the blades of the wind turbine rotor. As a consequence the lift force is constantly varying and phenomena as dynamic stall are occurring, inducing high turbine loads. In this study we investigate this phenomenon by means of particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements on a rotating model wind turbine. The experiments took place in the 3 m times 3 m wind tunnel of the University of Oldenburg utilizing the Model Wind Turbine of Oldenburg (MoWiTO) [1] and a high-speed stereo PIV system. Figure 1 (a) is showing a picture of the used setup including an active grid for turbulence generation [2]. The flow around the three airfoil sections was captured at the 12 o’clock position using cyclic triggering at a sampling frequency of 5 kHz while the turbine was operating at a rotating speed of 480 rpm. Different positions at the blade root at 25%, 30% and 35% of the span were examined this way. To induce dynamic stall the blades of the turbine were pitched in a sinusoidal movement between -1° to 3° using the turbine’s individual pitch control. Stall clearly occurs at a pitch angle of -1°, corresponding to AoA of 13°, 10° and 9° for the investigated radial positions at steady operation. By shifting the phase of the pitching movement in respect to one rotation of the rotor different AoA can be visualized at the 12 o’clock position of the turbine blades. In Figure 1 (b) a result of these measurements is shown. The inflow is coming from the right and the turbine blade moving from the bottom to the top. Colour coded we can see the vorticity of the flow field around the wind turbine blade. Clearly we observe a separation of the flow at the suction side of the airfoil and the subsequent wake which is advected by the main flow. With this novel setup dynamic stall can be induced and examined thoroughly using a high frequent and non-intrusive measurement method. This results in a better understanding of the flow around the blade root of a down scaled model wind turbine in controlled wind tunnel conditions. Für verschiedene Bevölkerungsgruppen wurde untersucht, welchen Einfluss Soziodemografie, Wohnort und Einkommen auf die durchschnittlichen jährlichen CO2-Emissionen haben. Die Analysen zeigen, dass die durchschnittlichen CO2-Emissionen von Stadt- und Landbevölkerung nahezu identisch sind, jedoch mit dem Haushaltseinkommen ansteigen. Datengrundlage der detaillierten Analysen zu den CO2-Emissionen im Personenverkehr ist ein Datensatz, der die Gesamtmobilität der in Deutschland lebenden Bevölkerung umfasst, d. h. alle Verkehrsmodi sowie Wege und Fahrten im In- und Ausland.

Zur Erreichung von signifikanten Reduktionen des Endenergieverbrauchs und der CO2-Emissionen im Verkehr sind vielschichtige und tiefgreifende Maßnahmen erforderlich. Eine wichtige Möglichkeit ist dabei den Güterverkehr verstärkt auf die Schiene zu bringen. Eine Verdopplung der transportierten Verkehrsleistung des Güterverkehrs auf der Schiene im Jahr 2030 gegenüber der aktuellen Verkehrsprognose des Bundes ist möglich, erfordert jedoch zusätzliche Infrastrukturmaßnahmen. Der aktuelle Bundesverkehrswegeplan leistet dafür einen bedeutenden Beitrag, allerdings wären bei einer solch drastischen Erhöhung noch weitere Maßnahmen erforderlich. Der vorliegende Beitrag zeigt entsprechende Maßnahmen auf und liefert eine erste grobe Abschätzung der dafür erforderlichen Investitionskosten.

Automatisiertes Fahren bietet Potenziale, wachsenden Anforderungen an Sicherheit, Flexibilität, Komfort und Zuverlässigkeit von Mobilität gerecht zu werden. Die möglichen Auswirkungen der Technik auf das Verkehrssystem gehen dabei weit über Änderungen im Verkehrsfluss, in der Fahrtzeitverwendung oder ein Mehr an Verkehrssicherheit hinaus. Eine systemische Betrachtung von Entwicklungen und ihren Folgen ist in diesem Zusammenhang unerlässlich, wurde bisher aber noch kaum unternommen. Die vorliegende Studie analysiert Wirkungen des vollautomatisierten Fahrens auf die Verkehrsmittelwahl, auf die Umwelt, auf das Verkehrssystem und auf die Stadt. Basis der Analysen sind Auswertungen der vorhandenen Fachliteratur und bestehender Roadmaps zum automatisierten Fahren sowie Gespräche mit Experten. Darauf aufbauend wurden mögliche Effekte des automatisierten Fahrens sowohl im Personen- als auch im Güterverkehr ausgehend von Szenarien für das Jahr 2035 berechnet. Zusätzlich wurde über eine empirische Erhebung die Sicht kommunaler Akteure auf Implikationen der Automatisierung adressiert. Die Ergebnisse zeigen insgesamt, dass neben den häufig thematisierten Potenzialen der Technik auch negative Effekte identifiziert und viele der Vorteile kurz- und mittelfristig noch nicht oder nur teilweise aktiviert werden können. So wird durch den Einsatz automatisierter Fahrzeuge z. B. mit Effizienzsteigerungen im Verkehr gerechnet, die auch zu einem Rückgang der CO2-Emissionen führen können. Die Ergebnisse der Studie weisen allerdings darauf hin, dass diese Effizienzsteigerungen derzeit noch Unsicherheiten unterworfen sind, die ganz wesentlich vom Grad der Durchdringung der Flotte mit automatisierten Fahrzeugen abhängen. Automatisiertes Fahren ermöglicht, das ist ein weiteres Potenzial der Technik, außerdem neue attraktive Mobilitätsangebote zu konkurrenzfähigen Preisen sowie insgesamt einer erweiterten Nutzergruppe den Zugang zur motorisierten Individualmobilität. Andererseits kann es durch die Attraktivitätssteigerung von automatisierten Individualfahrzeugen insgesamt zu einer Zunahme des motorisierten Individualverkehrs bei gleichzeitiger Schwächung des Öffentlichen Verkehrs (ÖV) kommen.

To analyse and quantify the possible impact of autonomous driving on mobility behaviour, we used an approach that combined both qualitative and quantitative methods. In the first phase of the project, we analysed the status quo in our selected countries and the expected developments in autonomous driving, and identified potential user segments and influencing areas related to autonomous driving which affect mobility behaviour. The insights were drawn from expert workshops, and from focus groups with potential users. In the second part of the study, using the results derived from the first phase of the project, we developed three scenarios to be examined with respect to the selected countries, which differed in the projected share of AVs within the vehicle fleet, as well as the way in which they are used as shared vehicles. Using a travel demand model, the impact of autonomous driving on mobility behaviour has been quantified.

Vehicle automation technology advances at rapid pace and the market entry of automated vehicles (AV) can be expected within the next years. Vehicle automation technology transitions gradually through different levels of automation (level 1 through level 4). However, substantial impact on travel choices only seem likely once drivers do not need to attend to the driving task anymore for most of a trip; i.e. drivers can take their “brain off” and engage in other activities such as work or entertainment. This is likely to impact on travel choices such as destination and mode choice because drivers might be willing to spend more time in the car or because the car is more attractive relative to other modes. At the moment, the future outlook in terms of AV regulation does not include the prospect of AVs being allowed to move without a driver; i.e. there must be a driver on board able to take over the driving task. This prospect rules out autonomous shared vehicle systems (autonomous car sharing, autonomous ride sharing) to a large degree, making privately owned AVs a likely scenario. The paper presents results from modelling travel behavior impacts of introducing AVs into the private car fleet. In order to model such a 2035 scenario, we combined a vehicle technology diffusion model and an aspatial travel demand model and applied this to Germany and the USA. Differentiating by passenger car segment, we introduce AVs among the newly registered vehicles from 2021 onward assuming an s-shaped market-take-up until 2035. By then, 50% of the new vehicles and 25% of the passenger car fleet are projected to be AVs. Again differentiating by segment and age, the AVs can be found among specific driver groups. In addition we assume that AVs are owned by mobility impaired travelers who did not have the option to drive previously. Subsequently, we use a travel demand model consisting of trip generation, distance choice and mode choice to forecast travel by different traveler groups and by car availability (no car, conventional car, AV). For modelling the impact of AVs compared to conventional cars, we reduced access/egress times due to quicker parking / valet parking and we reduced values of car travel time savings for travelers with AVs. While the model results overall conform to expectation the impact of AVs on travel behavior are not large: There is a ~5% increase in VMT for both Germany and the USA, resulting from somewhat longer trips combined with slight modal shifts from other modes towards the car. These results have important implications: If the regulatory framework for AVs is such that a private AV scenario is the most likely development, AVs are not likely to revolutionize travel. AVs will change travel behavior – but their impact might be marginal compared to other external factors.

The paper presents projections for the impact of private autonomous vehicles on destination choice, mode choice and thus overall travel demand for Germany and the USA. These results were obtained by combining a vehicle technology diffusion model and a travel demand model.
