We experimentally demonstrate Cs2 Feshbach molecules well above the dissociation threshold, which are stable against spontaneous decay on the timescale of one second. An optically trapped sample of ultracold dimers is prepared in an l-wave state and magnetically tuned into a region with negative binding energy. The metastable character of these molecules arises from the large centrifugal barrier in combination with negligible coupling to states with low rotational angular momentum. A sharp onset of dissociation with increasing magnetic field is mediated by a crossing with a g-wave dimer state and facilitates dissociation on demand with a well defined energy., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

We explore the rich internal structure of Cs_2 Feshbach molecules. Pure ultracold molecular samples are prepared in a CO_2-laser trap, and a multitude of weakly bound states is populated by elaborate magnetic-field ramping techniques. Our methods use different Feshbach resonances as input ports and various internal level crossings for controlled state transfer. We populate higher partial-wave states of up to eight units of rotational angular momentum (l-wave states). We investigate the molecular structure by measurements of the magnetic moments for various states. Avoided level crossings between different molecular states are characterized through the changes in magnetic moment and by a Landau-Zener tunneling method. Based on microwave spectroscopy, we present a precise measurement of the magnetic-field dependent binding energy of the weakly bound s-wave state that is responsible for the large background scattering length of Cs. This state is of particular interest because of its quantum-halo character., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, 4 tables

We report on the realization of a time-domain `St\"uckelberg interferometer', which is based on the internal state structure of ultracold Feshbach molecules. Two subsequent passages through a weak avoided crossing between two different orbital angular momentum states in combination with a variable hold time lead to high-contrast population oscillations. This allows for a precise determination of the energy difference between the two molecular states. We demonstrate a high degree of control over the interferometer dynamics. The interferometric scheme provides new possibilities for precision measurements with ultracold molecules., Comment: 4 pages, 5 figures

Three interacting particles form a system which is well known for its complex physical behavior. A landmark theoretical result in few-body quantum physics is Efimov's prediction of a universal set of weakly bound trimer states appearing for three identical bosons with a resonant two-body interaction. Surprisingly, these states even exist in the absence of a corresponding two-body bound state and their precise nature is largely independent of the particular type of the two-body interaction potential. Efimov's scenario has attracted great interest in many areas of physics; an experimental test however has not been achieved. We report the observation of an Efimov resonance in an ultracold thermal gas of cesium atoms. The resonance occurs in the range of large negative two-body scattering lengths and arises from the coupling of three free atoms to an Efimov trimer. We observe its signature as a giant three-body recombination loss when the strength of the two-body interaction is varied near a Feshbach resonance. This resonance develops into a continuum resonance at non-zero collision energies, and we observe a shift of the resonance position as a function of temperature. We also report on a minimum in the recombination loss for positive scattering lengths, indicating destructive interference of decay pathways. Our results confirm central theoretical predictions of Efimov physics and represent a starting point from which to explore the universal properties of resonantly interacting few-body systems., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures, Proceedings of ICAP-2006 (Innsbruck)

Condensed Matter - Other Condensed Matter - Abstract
Systems of three interacting particles are notorious for their complex physical behavior. A landmark theoretical result in few-body quantum physics is Efimov's prediction of a universal set of bound trimer states appearing for three identical bosons with a resonant two-body interaction. Counterintuitively, these states even exist in the absence of a corresponding two-body bound state. Since the formulation of Efimov's problem in the context of nuclear physics 35 years ago, it has attracted great interest in many areas of physics. However, the observation of Efimov quantum states has remained an elusive goal. Here we report the observation of an Efimov resonance in an ultracold gas of cesium atoms. The resonance occurs in the range of large negative two-body scattering lengths, arising from the coupling of three free atoms to an Efimov trimer. Experimentally, we observe its signature as a giant three-body recombination loss when the strength of the two-body interaction is varied. We also detect a minimum in the recombination loss for positive scattering lengths, indicating destructive interference of decay pathways. Our results confirm central theoretical predictions of Efimov physics and represent a starting point with which to explore the universal properties of resonantly interacting few-body systems. While Feshbach resonances have provided the key to control quantum-mechanical interactions on the two-body level, Efimov resonances connect ultracold matter to the world of few-body quantum phenomena., Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures

Condensed Matter - Other Condensed Matter - Abstract
We observe magnetically tuned collision resonances for ultracold Cs2 molecules stored in a CO2-laser trap. By magnetically levitating the molecules against gravity, we precisely measure their magnetic moment. We find an avoided level crossing which allows us to transfer the molecules into another state. In the new state, two Feshbach-like collision resonances show up as strong inelastic loss features. We interpret these resonances as being induced by Cs4 bound states near the molecular scattering continuum. The tunability of the interactions between molecules opens up novel applications such as controlled chemical reactions and synthesis of ultracold complex molecules.

Condensed Matter - Soft Condensed Matter - Abstract
We report a new scheme to create weakly bound Cs$_2$ molecules from an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. The method is based on switching the magnetic field to a narrow Feshbach resonance and yields a high atom-molecule conversion efficiency of more than 30%, a factor of three higher than obtained with conventional magnetic-field ramps. The Cs$_2$ molecules are created in a single $g$-wave rotational quantum state. The observed dependence of the conversion efficiency on the magnetic field and atom density shows scattering processes beyond two-body coupling to occur in the vicinity of the Feshbach resonance., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Europhysics Letters

- Abstract
Copernicus is the European programme for monitoring the Earth. It consists of a set of systems that collect data from satellites and in-situ sensors, process this data and provide users with reliable and up-to-date information on a range of environmental and security issues. The data and information processed and disseminated puts Copernicus at the forefront of the big data paradigm, giving rise to all relevant challenges, the so-called 5 Vs: volume, velocity, variety, veracity and value. In this short paper, we discuss the challenges of extracting information and knowledge from huge archives of Copernicus data. We propose to achieve this by scale-out distributed deep learning techniques that run on very big clusters offering virtual machines and GPUs. We also discuss the challenges of achieving scalability in the management of the extreme volumes of information and knowledge extracted from Copernicus data. The envisioned scientific and technical work will be carried out in the context of the H2020 project ExtremeEarth which starts in January 2019., QC 20190528

41. Pharmakogenetik in der Rechtsmedizin

- Abstract

43. Separating electrophilicity and Lewis acidity: the synthesis, characterization, and electrochemistry of the electron deficient tris(aryl)boranes B(C6F5)(3-n)(C6Cl5)n (n = 1-3)

- Abstract
A new family of electron-deficient tris(aryl)boranes, B(C(6)F(5))(3-n)(C(6)Cl(5))(n) (n = 1-3), has been synthesized, permitting an investigation into the steric and electronic effects resulting from the gradual replacement of C(6)F(5) with C(6)Cl(5) ligands. B(C(6)F(5))(2)(C(6)Cl(5)) (3) is accessed via C(6)Cl(5)BBr(2), itself prepared from donor-free Zn(C(6)Cl(5))(2) and BBr(3). Reaction of C(6)Cl(5)Li with BCl(3) in a Et(2)O/hexane slurry selectively produced B(C(6)Cl(5))(2)Cl, which undergoes B-Cl exchange with CuC(6)F(5) to afford B(C(6)F(5))(C(6)Cl(5))(2) (5). While 3 forms a complex with H(2)O, which can be rapidly removed under vacuum or in the presence of molecular sieves, B(C(6)Cl(5))(3) (6) is completely stable to refluxing toluene/H(2)O for several days. Compounds 3, 5, and 6 have been structurally characterized using single crystal X-ray diffraction and represent the first structure determinations for compounds featuring B-C(6)Cl(5) bonds; each exhibits a trigonal planar geometry about B, despite having different ligand sets. The spectroscopic characterization using (11)B, (19)F, and (13)C NMR indicates that the boron center becomes more electron-deficient as n increases. Optimized structures of B(C(6)F(5))(3-n)(C(6)Cl(5))(n) (n = 0-3) using density functional theory (B3LYP/TZVP) are all fully consistent with the experimental structural data. Computed (11)B shielding constants also replicate the experimental trend almost quantitatively, and the computed natural charges on the boron center increase in the order n = 0 (0.81) < n = 1 (0.89) < n = 2 (1.02) < n = 3 (1.16), supporting the hypothesis that electrophilicity increases concomitantly with substitution of C(6)F(5) for C(6)Cl(5). The direct solution cyclic voltammetry of B(C(6)F(5))(3) has been obtained for the first time and electrochemical measurements upon the entire series B(C(6)F(5))(3-n)(C(6)Cl(5))(n) (n = 0-3) corroborate the spectroscopic data, revealing C(6)Cl(5) to be a more electron-withdrawing group than C(6)F(5), with a ca. +200 mV shift observed in the reduction potential per C(6)F(5) group replaced. Conversely, use of the Guttmann-Beckett and Childs' methods to determine Lewis acidity on B(C(6)F(5))(3), 3, and 5 showed this property to diminish with increasing C(6)Cl(5) content, which is attributed to the steric effects of the bulky C(6)Cl(5) substituents. This conflict is ascribed to the minimal structural reorganization in the radical anions upon reduction during cyclic voltammetric experiments. Reduction of 6 using Na((s)) in THF results in a vivid blue paramagnetic solution of Na(+) [6](•-); the EPR signal of Na(+)[6](•-) is centered at g = 2.002 with a((11)B) 10G. Measurements of the exponential decay of the EPR signal (298 K) reveal [6](•-) to be considerably more stable than its perfluoro analogue.

Computational chemistry - Abstract
This thesis presents electronic structure calculations on problems related to the bonding in inorganic coordination compounds and clusters. A wide range of molecules with the ability to exist in different structural forms or electronic states has been selected and density functional theory is systematically applied in order to gain detailed insight into their characteristics and reactivity at the electronic level. First, we address the question of redox non-innocent behaviour of bipyridine in a series of 1st row transition metal complexes. Complexes of the type [M(2,2'-bipyridine)(mes)₂]0 (M = Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni; mes = 2,4,6-Me₃C6H₂) and their one-electron reduced forms have been explored. The results clearly show that the anions are best described as complexes of the monoanionic bipyridine radical (Sbpy = 1/2), giving a rationale for the observed structural changes within the ligand. Likewise, we have identified dianionic bipyridine in both the complexes [Zn2(4,4'-bpy)(mes)₄]²− and [Fe(2,2'-bpy)₂]²−. In no case have we found evidence for significant metal-to-ligand backbonding. The subject of redox-noninnocence is further revisited in a comparative study of the two complexes [M(o-Clpap)₃] (M = Cr, Mo; o-Clpap = 2-[(2-chloro-phenyl)azo]-pyridine), and their associated electron transfer series. The results indicate that all electron transfer processes are primarily ligand-based, although in the case of the Mo analogue these are coupled to substantial electron density changes at the metal. The ability of pap to form radical anions finds a contrasting case in the di- nuclear Rh complex [Rh₂(μ-p-Clpap)₂ (cod)Cl₂], where the two ligand bridges act as acceptors of strong dπ∗ backbonding from a formally Rh–I centre. We then direct our attention to the endohedral Zintl clusters [Fe@Ge10]³− and [Mn@Pb12]³−, which reveal peculiar topologies. We have probed the electronic factors that influence their geometric preferences, and propose a model based on the shift of electron density from the endo- hedral metal to the cage to account for the observed geometries. Subsequently, we reassess the electronic structure of the xenophilic clusters Mn₂(thf)₄(Fe(CO)₄)₂ and [Mn(Mn(thf)₂)₃(Mn(CO)₄)₃]–. We conclude that these are best viewed as exchange coupled MnII centres bridged by closed- shell carbonylate fragments. In the closing chapter the reduction of NO₂– to NO by the complex [Cu(tct)(NO₂)]+ (tct = cis,cis-1,3,5-tris(cinnamylideneamino)cyclohexane) is studied, a process that mimics the enzyme-catalysed reaction. Two viable pathways for the reaction have been traced and key inter-mediates identified. Both direct release of NO or via decomposition of a Cu-NO complex are kinetically and thermodynamically feasible.

A search for pair-produced doubly charged Higgs bosons has been performed using data samples corresponding to an integrated luminosity of about 614 pb-1 collected with the OPAL detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 189GeV and 209GeV. No evidence for a signal has been observed. A mass limit of 98.5GeV/c2 at the 95% confidence level has been set for the doubly charged Higgs particle in left-right symmetric models. This is the first search for doubly charged Higgs bosons at centre-of-mass energies larger than 91GeV., Comment: 19 pages, 4 figures, Submitted to Phys. Lett. B

Electroweak measurements performed with data taken at the electron-positron collider LEP at CERN from 1995 to 2000 are reported. The combined data set considered in this report corresponds to a total luminosity of about 3fb-1 collected by the four LEP experiments ALEPH, DELPHI, L3 and OPAL, at centre-of-mass energies ranging from 130GeV to 209GeV. Combining the published results of the four LEP experiments, the measurements include total and differential cross-sections in photon-pair, fermion-pair and four-fermion production, the latter resulting from both double-resonant W W and Z Z production as well as singly resonant production. Total and differential cross-sections are measured precisely, providing a stringent test of the Standard Model at centre-of-mass energies never explored before in electron-positron collisions. Final-state interaction effects in four-fermion production, such as those arising from colour reconnection and Bose-Einstein correlations between the two W decay systems arising in W W production, are searched for and upper limits on the strength of possible effects are obtained. The data are used to determine fundamental properties of the W boson and the electroweak theory. Among others, the mass and width of the W boson, mW and ΓW, the branching fraction of W decays to hadrons, B (W → had), and the trilinear gauge-boson self-couplings g1 Z, κγ and λγ are determined to be: mW=80.376±0.033GeV ΓW=2.195±0.083GeV B(W→had)=67.41±0.27% g1 Z=0.9840+0.018 -0.020 κγ=0.982±0.042λγ=-0.022±0.019. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
