This study estimated poultry farmers’ willingness to pay (WTP) for fly larvae meal as animal protein source to feed local chickens in Benin. A double-bounded contingent valuation approach was used to collect data from 480 poultry farmers, and an interval regression model was performed. We found that 82.10% of poultry farmers are willing to pay for using fly larvae meal. The average WTP was estimated at FCFA/ kg 225.10 (€/kg 0.34), indicating a potential and reliable demand in fly larvae meal. Our analysis suggests that public actions can sensitize poultry farmers and support innovative small companies to produce and market fly larvae meal.

Mots cles: Mouche, alimentation, perception, aviculteurs traditionnels, Benin English Title: Local perceptions and factors affecting fly larvae adoption for traditional poultry ( Gallus gallus ) feeding in Benin English Abstract Objectives: The maggots are an important but underused source of animal protein in the diet of local chickens. This study aims to analyze the perceptions of traditional poultry farmers and the factors determining the use of maggots in the diet of local chickens ( Gallus gallus ) in Benin. Methodology and Results: 960 traditional poultry farmers were randomly surveyed in 48 villages. The main data collected were sociolinguistic characteristics, information on livestock and the choice of using maggots. Factors determining the use of maggots were analyzed by canonical discriminant analysis. A generalized linear mixedeffects model was used to analyze factors determining the desire of adopting maggots. Three groups of traditional poultry farmers were distinguished and their characteristics were studied. The geographical location and the sex of the poultry farmer are the factors that determine the desire of using of maggots. Conclusion and Application of Results: Group 2 are the poultry farmers wishing to use maggots (Group 2) with 81.68% of the respondents, those of Group 1 are already using maggots with 5.73% of respondents, and finally the Group 3 consists of traditional poultry farmers who are against the use of maggots, with 12.59% of respondents. Poultry farmers in Group 1 differ from those of Groups 2 and 3 by their herd size and annual income, those in Group 2 differ from those of Group 3 by gender, socio-cultural group and seniority in the breeding. The traditional poultry farmers have a perfect knowledge of maggots and the majority agrees to the use them in the diet of local poultry. This acceptance must be accompanied by the organization of large-scale awareness sessions and accompanying actions for the production of maggots to facilitate the adoption of maggots in the food practices of poultry farming in Benin. Recent economic and financial crises have prompted discussion of economic policy requirements dictated by international financial institutions to borrowing countries. Such economic policy prescriptions have modified the organization of the cotton system in Benin with structural adjustment programs since 1991. The objective of the thesis is to analyze how economic liberalization of the cotton system has affected working rules, interrelationships between producers, economic coordination, decision-making mechanisms, crop choice and the distribution of resources. To answer, we adopt a traditional institutional economics framework and use a temporal comparative approach to highlight the joint of market/ non-market relationships. Results show that the stability of institutions and the rationing transactions among producers had resulted from the formation of communities of actors which supervised and controlled market/ non-market relationships ahead and downstream production. However, greater competition for resources control in the coordination since 2002 has made the institutions and rationing transactions unstable. Cotton's multifunctionality, which is enhanced by such institutions and the collective action of producers, is negatively affected. It appears tensions between actors which discouraged both cotton production and non-market production. At different levels of cotton production specialization, farms have adopted new strategies that threaten producer solidarity and institutional stability. Production decisions and resource allocations are both determined by market forces and by group or family memberships. The thesis concludes that strong institutions are necessary for economic coordination and for market regulation, and that they become weak when market forces dominate economic relationships. It follows that in recent years, liberalization has led to a decline in cotton production, which weakens the economy of Benin.

This study was carried out to assess cotton farmers' willingness to pay (WTP) for pest management services in northern Benin. Targeted staggered control (TSC) has been introduced to reduce pesticide use in cotton cropping and generate an estimated benefit of FCFA48,800 (€74.40) per cotton hectare accruing from increased productivity and reduced pesticide cost. However, TSC application requires extra time for pest identification and scouting, and its adoption remains low due to the lack of funding to boost farmers' awareness and cover training costs. An interval regression model was used to analyze responses to a double-bounded contingent valuation survey with data collected from 300 cotton farmers. The results showed that 87.3% of cotton farmers were willing to pay for TSC services. Annual WTP per cotton hectare was estimated at FCFA16,962 (€25.80), revealing an existing demand for TSC adoption. Respondents' WTP was driven by farm and socio-economic characteristics. Financial mechanisms managed by farmers could thus potentially foster technology adoption, and in turn, generate economic and environmental benefits. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
