This study's aim was assessing of the relationship between mentalization and life satisfaction and the level of adaptation to oncological disease in patients with breast cancer. The study involved 41 women ( M = 59.88; SD = 8.81) with breast cancer who completed their treatments and participated in a cancer rehabilitation program. In the study, we used the Mentalization Questionnaire (MZQ), the Satisfaction Life Scale (SWLS), and the Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer Scale (Mini-MAC). The mean of declared level of mentalization was 45.54 ( SD = 11.65). The significant correlation between mentalization (its general value and individual dimensions) and satisfaction with life/mental adjustment to cancer was observed. The strongest positive correlations were noted between refusing self-reflection, helplessness-hopelessness, and anxious preoccupation and the negative correlation between mentalization and satisfaction with life. Mentalization was a predictor of satisfaction with life and mental adjustment to illness. Mentalization was related with life satisfaction and adjustment to cancer in patients with breast cancer, which is in line with previous studies suggesting the crucial role of subjective psychological factors in maintaining mental health.

Aim: The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the level of anxiety, depression, and quality of life (QoL) in medically inoperable patients with early stage non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with stereotactic ablative radiotherapy (SABR)., Background: Prolonged survival is equally important as maintaining high QoL and good psychological functioning during the treatment of lung cancer. Nowadays available SABR has markedly changed clinical care and outcomes in the group of medically inoperable patients. To our knowledge, analysis of QoL and psychological state has not been performed in Polish patients with early NSCLC treated with SABR., Materials and Methods: Research group consisted of medically inoperable, early NSCLC (T1-2aN0M0) patients qualified to SABR. Patients were asked to complete Polish versions of the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life - Core Questionnaire (EORTC QLQ-C30) with the Lung Cancer Questionnaire (LC13) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD). These questionnaires were repeated 2 weeks and then 3 months after treatment completion., Results: We enrolled 51 patients who met the inclusion criteria. SABR did not deteriorate QoL and psychological functioning. On the contrary, clinically meaningful improvement was observed in emotional functioning, level of insomnia, anxiety and depression. Significantly worse improvement was shown in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)., Conclusions: Our results confirm that SABR is well tolerated and does not have a deleterious effect on QoL and psychological state. Results of our study indicate the importance of additional psychological care in the group of patients with COPD.

Introduction: Survival of ovarian cancer patients is still unsatisfactory despite the introduction of new diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Women with advanced ovarian cancer with long-term survival are at persistent risk of anxiety and reactive depression due to poor prognosis and risk of burdensome symptoms. The aim of the study was to assess changes in anxiety and depression during multimodality ovarian cancer treatment and to identify correlates of anxiety and depression., Method: The study included 106 consecutive patients with advanced ovarian cancer. Mean age of the study group was 53.9 years (SD = 10.8, range: 23-79). The participants completed Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory four times: prior to and one week after surgery, and before the second and the fourth course of adjuvant chemotherapy. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify the independent determinants of distress at various stages of treatment., Results: The level of anxiety and the prevalence of pathological anxiety (74%) were the highest prior to surgery and gradually decreased thereafter. Irrespective of the treatment stage, the level of anxiety was higher than the corresponding level of depression. History of abortion, presence of intestinal stoma, poor general status, residual disease and time from the initial diagnosis were the main determinants of distress in ovarian cancer patients., Conclusions: Significant changes in the level of anxiety and slight fluctuations in the depression level experienced during ovarian cancer treatment are mostly determined by clinical variables. Identification of individuals with psychological comorbidities is a vital component of patient-oriented multidisciplinary care.

This study is aimed at investigating factors leading to delayed oncologic examinations versus immediate consultation with a physician in patients with various cancers. We analysed the results of a study of patients (n = 291) reporting for their first oncologic examinations. We conducted structured interviews containing social, demographic and clinical data, the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, the Beck Depression Inventory and Harris and Guten's health appraisal scores. Based on an analysis of decision-making trees, the results indicate that it is possible to predict beliefs regarding the curability of cancer and immediate versus delayed reporting to a physician. Delayed reports may be predicted on the basis of two factors: (1) a belief that cancer is incurable combined with increased state anxiety, 'good' or 'very good' self-appraisal of health and low depression; and (2) a belief that cancer is incurable accompanied by increased anxiety and depression. The characteristics of patients delaying a visit to the oncologist suggest the existence of three independent factors leading to both considerable (longer than nine months) and minor (up to one month) delays in seeking treatment.

Objectives: The study aimed to compare the effect of second line intravenous and intraperitoneal chemotherapy on physical and psychological aspects of quality of life in patients with advanced ovarian cancer., Materials and Methods: Quality of life was measured with EORTC QLQ-C30 (version 3.0) questionnaire. 42 sample patients with histologically confirmed diagnosis of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer treated with second line intravenous or intraperitoneal chemotherapy were included in the study., Results: Higher score of global quality of life and less side-effects of chemotherapy were observed in the group of patients treated with intraperitoneal chemotherapy. In this group constipation and dyspnoea were less common., Conclusion: Intraperitoneal chemotherapy has less negative influence on quality of life than intravenous drug delivery.
