Abstract

A mechanical alloying process for Fe-Cr powders was investigated using x-ray diffraction and magnetization analysis to determine the effectiveness of magnetic studies in studying the alloying process. The results showed that as compared to conventional techniques, magnetic measurements obtained more detailed data on the alloying process during ball milling. Ball milling produced a high temperature phase of the alpha solid solution as one of the final products. The amorphous phase was paramagnetic at room temperature.

Abstract

The γ iron nitride (nitrogen austenite) was subjected to high magnetic field process in order to drive the fcc→bct martensitic transformation. Molar fraction of martensite monotonically increased with increasing the magnetic field and reached 94% at 35 T. With a combination of magnetization and 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy data, magnetization of bulk processed α′ phase with 9.6 at. % N is determined to be 229 emu/g, the same as that for dc sputtered thin films. Abstract

Magnetic measurements and [.sup.57.Fe] transmission Mossbauer spectroscopy are carried out in order to determine the intrinsic magnetization of bulk processed [alpha]' phase. The materials having a larger magnetization than pure iron can be synthesized when the retained austenites are removed and both high magnetic filed process at low temperatures and mechanical milling treatments are effective for this purpose.

Abstract

In the course of screening for inhibitors of transforming-growth factor-beta (TGF-beta) functions we found that conophylline, a vinca alkaloid, inhibited TGF-beta-induced apoptosis in rat hepatoma cells. Because conophylline also inhibited TGF-b-induced promoter activity in mink lung cells, we studied the mechanism of the inhibition in this cell line. Conophylline did not inhibit nuclear translocation of Smad2. Instead, we found that conophylline increased the expression of c-Jun, which had been earlier shown to interact with the corepressor TGIF to suppress the transcriptional activity dependent on Smad2. Conophylline attenuated the interaction between the Smad2 complex and p300 but enhanced that between the Smad2 complex and TGIF. In cells overexpressing c-Jun, suppression of promoter activity induced by TGF-beta and the enhancement of the association of the Smad2 complex with TGIF were also observed. Thus, our data suggest that inhibition of TGF-beta-induced promoter activity by conophylline can be attributed to its potency in modulating the interaction of downstream transcriptional factors via upregulation of c-Jun expression.

35. Fat Polymorphism and Crystal Seeding Effects on Fat Bloom Stability of Dark Chocolate

Abstract

The effects of seeding with fine crystal powders on the physical properties of dark chocolate are re viewed in terms of the polymorphism and crystallization behavior of cocoa butter (CBJ and of its major fat constituents. The polymorphic structure of four symmetric mixed acids saturated -oleic-saturated (Sat-0- Sat) triacylglycerols (TAGs I [POP (1 ,3-dipalmitoyl-2- oleoyl-glyceroll ;SOS I 1 ,3-distearoyl-2-oleoyl-glycerol); AOA (1 ,3-diarachidoyl-2-oleoyl-glycerol); and BOB 11 ,3-dibehenoyl-2-oleoyl-glyceroi)J. and of tristearoylglycerol (SSSI are briefly explained. An attempt is made at replacing the currently used tempering meth ~ ad in the chocolate solidification process, by a simple cooling technique using fat seed crystals. CB (form VI). SOS 1/i11. BOB (pseudo-/i·l. BOB i/i2), and SSS 1/il are examined as seed materials. The addition of all powders accelerated the crystallization of dark chocolate. Fat bloom stability is also improved by the seed crystals, except w ith SSS. The effect is highly dependent on the physical properties of the seed material employed. The most influencing factors are the similarities in the polymorphic behavior between the seed material and cocoa butter, especially, chain length structure. Thermal stability of the seed crystal is also very important. In view of all physical properties examined, the present review concludes that the p2 form of BOB performs best as a seed material. In particular, it gives rise to an accelerated crystallization of form V of CB and moderates change in viscosity and antibloom effects after thermal incubation of dark chocolate below and above the melting point of CB.
