Search

Accurately determining neutrino masses is a main objective of contemporary cosmology. Since massive neutrinos affect structure formation and evolution, probes of large scale structure are sensitive to the sum of their masses. In this work, we explore future constraints on $\sum m_\nu$ utilizing line-intensity mapping (LIM) as a promising emerging probe of the density of our Universe, focusing on the fine-structure [CII] line as an example, and compare these constraints with those derived from traditional galaxy surveys. Additionally, we perform a multi-tracer analysis using velocity tomography via the kinetic Sunyaev-Zeldovich and moving lens effects to reconstruct the three-dimensional velocity field. Our forecasts indicate that the next-generation AtLAST detector by itself can achieve $\sigma_{\Sigma m_\nu} \sim 50$ meV sensitivity. Velocity tomography will further improve these constraints by 4%. Incorporating forecasts for CMB-S4 and DESI-BAO in a comprehensive multi-tracer analysis, while setting a prior on the optical depth to reionization $\tau$ derived using 21-cm forecasted observations, to break degeneracies, we find that a $\gtrsim5\sigma$ detection of $\sum m_\nu\!\sim\! 60$ meV, under the normal hierarchy, is within reach with LIM. Even without a $\tau$ prior, our combined forecast reaches $\sigma_{\Sigma m_\nu} \!\sim\! 18$ meV., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures

The cosmological 21-cm signal is sourced from hyperfine transitions in neutral hydrogen atoms. Yet, although hydrogen atoms belong to the sub-class of baryonic matter, it is customary to simplify their treatment and analyze the 21-cm signal as if all the matter in the Universe was in the form of collisionless cold dark matter (CDM). This is usually done by evolving the density field via a scale-independent growth factor (SIGF). In this work, we separate the baryons from CDM and evolve the two species with a proper scale-dependent growth factor (SDGF). By incorporating the SDGF in the 21cmFirstCLASS code, we demonstrate the effect that baryons and CDM have on the 21-cm signal at the linear dark ages epoch and the subsequent non-linear epochs of cosmic dawn and reionization. Our analysis shows that the baryonic nature of hydrogen cannot be ignored during the dark ages, and that non-linear effects in density-field evolution must be accounted for after stars have formed. Furthermore, we discuss how the 21-cm signal is modified at lower redshifts, where ground-based 21-cm interferometers are mostly sensitive, due to the choice of working with either the "linear" or "non-linear" matter over-density (that is, the over-density as computed from linear perturbation theory, and non-linear perturbation theory, respectively) in the extended Press-Schechter formalism. Early dark energy (EDE) is one of the leading models proposed to resolve the perplexing Hubble tension. Despite extensive scrutiny and testing against various observables, conclusive constraints remain elusive as we await new data. In this paper, we study the impact of EDE on the 21cm signal, a powerful probe of cosmic dawn, and the epoch of reionization. First, we examine the signatures of the shift in cosmological parameters and the new EDE parameters on the evolution of the 21cm signal compared to $\Lambda$CDM. We then focus on the implications of these signatures for upcoming radio interferometer telescopes, such as the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA), and their ability to differentiate between EDE and $\Lambda$CDM. Finally, we forecast HERA's sensitivity to the fractional energy density of EDE, $f_{\rm EDE}$, assuming a fiducial EDE model. We find significant modifications to the 21cm signal due to the presence of EDE. Furthermore, our analysis suggests that HERA, operating in its designed configuration, is poised to differentiate between the models and be sensitive to $f_{\rm EDE}$ within $2\sigma$ after $\mathcal{O}(100)$ days of observation and $5\sigma$ after 2 years., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures

Early dark energy, an additional component of dark energy active in the decade of redshift before recombination, has emerged as one of the most effective models at reducing the $H_0$ tension between direct measurement of the Hubble parameter $H_0$ in the late-universe and the $\Lambda$CDM prediction when calibrated on Planck. However, it requires a slight increase in the dark matter density $\omega_{\rm cdm}$ and primordial tilt $n_s$ that worsens the $S_8$ tension between measurements of weak gravitational lensing at low redshifts and the Planck/$\Lambda$CDM prediction. Using a phenomenological fluid model, we investigate whether the inclusion of a drag term between dark matter and early dark energy can compensate for the effect of the increase in power at small-scales, such that both $H_0$ and $S_8$ tensions are simultaneously alleviated. We find that this works if the drag term is dynamically relevant in the post-recombination universe. However, a drag term active before or just around the time at which the early dark energy contribution to the energy density is maximum is significantly constrained due to its impact on the matter perturbations before recombination, and the subsequent modifications to the cosmic microwave background power spectra., Comment: 10 + 7 pages, 8 figures. We use a combination of high-redshift observables to extract the strongest constraints to date on the fraction of axion fuzzy dark matter (FDM) in the mass window $10^{-26}\,\mathrm{eV}\!\lesssim\! m_\mathrm{FDM}\!\lesssim\!10^{-23}\,\mathrm{eV}$. These observables include ultraviolet luminosity functions (UVLFs) at redshifts $4-10$ measured by the Hubble Space Telescope, a constraint on the neutral hydrogen fraction from high-redshift quasar spectroscopy, the cosmic microwave background optical depth to reionization measurement from Planck and upper bounds on the 21cm power spectrum from HERA. In order to calculate these signals for FDM cosmology, we use the 21cmFirstCLASS code to interface between AxiCLASS and 21cmFAST and consistently account for the full cosmic history from recombination to reionization. To facilitate a full Bayesian likelihood analysis, we developed a machine-learning based pipeline, which is both accurate, and enables a swift statistical inference, orders of magnitude faster than a brute force approach. We find that FDM of mass $m_\mathrm{FDM} \!= \!10^{-23} \, \mathrm{eV}$ is bound to less than $16\%$ of the total dark matter, where the constrains strengthen towards smaller masses, reaching down to $1\%$ for $m_\mathrm{FDM}\! =\! 10^{-26} \, \mathrm{eV}$, both at $95\%$ confidence level. In addition, we forecast that a future detection of the 21cm power spectrum with HERA will lower the upper bound at $m_\mathrm{FDM}\! =\! 10^{-23} \, \mathrm{eV}$ to $\lesssim\!1\%$., Comment: 19 pages, 16 figures, 2 tables. Decaying dark matter (DDM) can be tested via different astrophysical and cosmological probes. In particular, particles in the $\sim$ 9.5 - 30 eV mass range that decay into monochromatic photons, would contribute to the extragalactic background light (EBL) in the ultraviolet (UV) bandwidth. In this work, we show that an intriguing improvement to the constraints on such DDM models can come from broadband UV surveys, such as GALEX or the upcoming ULTRASAT satellite. These provide diffuse light maps of the UV EBL, integrated over a wide redshift range. The cross correlation between intensity fluctuations in these maps with a reference spectroscopic galaxy survey, can be used to reconstruct the redshift evolution of the EBL intensity; in this way, it is also possible to detect signatures of contributions from DDM. We forecast the constraining power of (GALEX+ULTRASAT)$\times$DESI, and we show they will be able to detect DDM with decay rate up to $\mathcal{O}(10^{-26}\,{\rm s})$. In the context of axion-like particles (ALP), our forecasts can be converted to constraints on the ALP-photon coupling; our results show this technique will test ALP with coupling $\lesssim\mathcal{O}(10^{-12}\,{\rm GeV^{-1}})$, more than an order of magnitude better than current bounds in this mass range., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures. The Extragalactic Background Light (EBL) carries a huge astrophysical and cosmological content: its frequency spectrum and redshift evolution are determined by the integrated emission of unresolved sources, these being galaxies, active galactic nuclei, or more exotic components. The near-UV region of the EBL spectrum is currently not well constrained, yet a significant improvement can be expected thanks to the soon-to-be launched Ultraviolet Transient Astronomy Satellite (ULTRASAT). Intended to study transient events in the $2300-2900\,{\rm \r{A}}$ observed band, this detector will provide wide field maps, tracing the UV intensity fluctuations on the largest scales. In this paper, we suggest how to exploit ULTRASAT to reconstruct the redshift evolution of the UV-EBL volume emissivity. We build upon the work of Chiang et al. (2019), where the Clustering-Based Redshift (CBR) technique was used to study diffuse light maps from GALEX. Their results showed the capability of the cross correlation between GALEX and SDSS spectroscopic catalogs in constraining the UV emissivity, highlighting how CBR is sensitive only to the extragalactic emissions, avoiding foregrounds and Galactic contributions. In our analysis, we introduce a framework to forecast the CBR constraining power when applied to ULTRASAT and GALEX in cross correlation with the 5-year DESI spectroscopic survey. We show that these will yield a strong improvement in the measurement of the UV-EBL volume emissivity. For $\lambda = 1500\,{\rm \r{A}}$,non-ionizing continuum below $z \sim 2$, we forecast a $1\sigma$ uncertainty $\lesssim 26\%\,(9\%)$ with conservative (optimistic) bias priors using ULTRASAT full-sky map; similar constraints can be obtained from its low-cadence survey, which will provide a smaller but deeper map. Different star-formation models at Cosmic Dawn produce detectable signatures in the observables of upcoming 21-cm experiments. In this work, we consider the physical scenario of feedback-free starbursts (FFB), according to which the star-formation efficiency (SFE) is enhanced in sufficiently massive halos at early enough times, thus explaining the indication from the James Webb Space Telescope for an excess of bright galaxies at $z \geq 10$. We model the contribution of FFBs to popII SFE and compute the impact these have on the 21-cm global signal and power spectrum. We show that FFBs affect the evolution of the brightness temperature and the 21-cm power spectrum, but they only have a limited effect on the neutral hydrogen fraction. We investigate how the observables are affected by changes in the underlying star formation model and by contribution from popIII stars. Finally, we forecast the capability of next-generation Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) to detect the existence of FFB galaxies via power spectrum measurements. Our results show the possibility of a significant detection, provided that popII stars are the main drivers of lowering the spin temperature. In a companion paper we introduce 21cmFirstCLASS, a new code for computing the 21-cm anisotropies, assembled from the merger of the two popular codes 21cmFAST and CLASS. Unlike the standard 21cmFAST, which begins at $z=35$ with homogeneous temperature and ionization boxes, our code begins its calculations from recombination, evolves the signal through the dark ages, and naturally yields an inhomogeneous box at $z=35$. In this paper, we validate the output of 21cmFirstCLASS by developing a new theoretical framework which is simple and intuitive on the one hand, but is robust and precise on the other hand. As has been recently claimed, using consistent inhomogeneous initial conditions mitigates inaccuracies, which according to our analysis can otherwise reach the $\mathcal O\left(20\%\right)$ level. On top of that, we also show for the first time that 21cmFAST over-predicts the 21-cm power spectrum at $z\gtrsim20$ by another $\mathcal O\left(20\%\right)$, due to the underlying assumption that $\delta_b=\delta_c$, namely that the density fluctuations in baryons and cold dark matter are indistinguishable. We propose an elegant solution to this discrepancy by introducing an appropriate scale-dependent growth factor into the evolution equations. Our analysis shows that this modification will ensure sub-percent differences between 21cmFirstCLASS and the Boltzmann solver CAMB at $z\leq50$ for all scales between the horizon and the Jeans scale. This will enable 21cmFirstCLASS to consistently and reliably simulate the 21-cm anisotropies both in the dark ages and cosmic dawn, for any cosmology. In this work we present 21cmFirstCLASS, a modified version of 21cmFAST, the most popular code in the literature for computing the anisotropies of the 21-cm signal. Our code uses the public cosmic microwave background (CMB) Boltzmann code CLASS, to establish consistent initial conditions at recombination for any set of cosmological parameters and evolves them throughout the dark ages, cosmic dawn, the epoch of heating and reionization. We account for inhomogeneity in the temperature and ionization fields throughout the evolution, crucial for a robust calculation of both the global 21-cm signal and its fluctuations. We demonstrate how future measurements of the CMB and the 21-cm signal can be combined and analyzed with 21cmFirstCLASS to obtain constraints on both cosmological and astrophysical parameters and examine degeneracies between them. As an example application, we show how 21cmFirstCLASS can be used to study cosmological models that exhibit non-linearities already at the dark ages, such as scattering dark matter (SDM). For the first time, we present self-consistent calculations of the 21-cm power spectrum in the presence of SDM during the non-linear epoch of cosmic dawn. Fuzzy Dark Matter (FDM) has recently gained attention as a motivated candidate for the dark matter (DM) content of the Universe, as opposed to the commonly assumed cold DM (CDM), since the soliton profile intrinsic to FDM models was found to be particularly well suited to reproduce observed galaxy mass profiles. While FDM as a single DM component has been strongly constrained by multiple probes, there remained a mass window between $10^{-25}\,\mathrm{eV}$ and $10^{-24}\,\mathrm{eV}$ in which it can comprise a large portion ($\gtrsim\mathcal{O}(10\%)$) of the total DM. In this work, we consider gravitational lensing measurements in the strong lensing regime, which are one of the only means to directly constrain the distribution and profile of DM in astronomical bodies. Using a simple model that combines a soliton FDM component with a Navarro-Frenk-White (NFW) profile, we explore under what conditions DM halos with this hybrid profile are able to reproduce the observed Einstein radii of several known lenses. We find that FDM with a particle mass of $\lesssim 10^{-24}\,{\rm eV}$ cannot explain the observations if it makes up more than $\sim10\%$ of the total DM, effectively closing the lingering FDM mass window., Comment: Constraints are likely overestimated due to issues with the numerical analysis. The fluid forces associated with primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) generate small-scale fluctuations in the primordial density field, which add to the $\mathrm{\Lambda CDM}$ linear matter power spectrum on small scales. These enhanced small-scale fluctuations lead to earlier formation of galactic halos and stars and thus affect cosmic reionization. We study the consequences of these effects on 21 cm observables using the semi-numerical code 21cmFAST v3.1.3. We find the excess small-scale structure generates strong stellar radiation backgrounds in the early Universe, resulting in altered 21 cm global signals and power spectra commensurate with earlier reionization. We restrict the allowed PMF models using the CMB optical depth to reionization. Lastly, we probe parameter degeneracies and forecast experimental sensitivities with an information matrix analysis subject to the CMB optical depth bound. Our forecasts show that interferometers like HERA are sensitive to PMFs of order $\sim \mathrm{pG}$, nearly an order of magnitude stronger than existing and next-generation experiments., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures -- v2, matches version accepted for publication in PRD

Recent upper bounds from the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA) on the cosmological 21-cm power spectrum at redshifts $z \approx 8, 10$, have been used to constrain $L_{\rm X<2 \, keV}/{\rm SFR}$, the soft-band X-ray luminosity measured per unit star formation rate (SFR), strongly disfavoring values lower than $\approx 10^{39.5} \, {\rm erg} \;{\rm s}^{-1} \;{\rm M}_{\odot}^{-1} \;{\rm yr}$. This conclusion is derived from semi-numerical models of the 21-cm signal, specifically focusing on contributions from atomic cooling galaxies that host PopII stars. In this work, we first reproduce the bounds on $L_{\rm X<2 \, keV}/{\rm SFR}$ and other parameters using a pipeline that combines machine learning emulators for the power spectra and the intergalactic medium characteristics, together with a standard Markov chain Monte Carlo parameter fit. We then use this approach when including molecular cooling galaxies that host PopIII stars in the cosmic dawn 21-cm signal, and show that lower values of $L_{\rm X<2 \, keV}/{\rm SFR}$ are hence no longer strongly disfavored. The revised HERA bound does not require high-redshift X-ray sources to be significantly more luminous than high-mass X-ray binaries observed at low redshift., Comment: 22 pages, 13 figures, 2 tables. Massive neutrinos modify the expansion history of the universe and suppress the structure formation below their free streaming scale. Cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations at small angular scales can be used to constrain the total mass $\Sigma m_\nu$ of the three neutrino flavors. However, at these scales, the CMB-measured $\Sigma m_\nu$ is degenerate with $\tau$, the optical depth to reionization, which quantifies the damping of CMB anisotropies due to the scattering of CMB photons with free electrons along the line of sight. Here we revisit the idea to use 21-cm power spectrum observations to provide direct estimates for $\tau$. A joint analysis of CMB and 21-cm data can alleviate the $\tau-\Sigma m_\nu$ degeneracy, making it possible to measure $\Sigma m_\nu$ with unprecedented precision. Forecasting for the upcoming Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA), we find that a $\lesssim\mathcal{O}(10\%)$ measurement of $\tau$ is achievable, which would enable a $\gtrsim 5\sigma$ measurement of $\Sigma m_\nu=60\,[{\rm meV}]$, for any astrophysics model that we considered. Primordial magnetic fields (PMFs) offer a compelling explanation for the origin of observed magnetic fields, especially on extragalactic scales. Such PMFs give rise to excess of power in small scale matter perturbations that could strongly influence structure formation. We study the impact of the magnetically enhanced matter power spectrum on the signal that will be observed by line-intensity mapping (LIM) surveys targeting carbon monoxide (CO) emission from star-forming galaxies at high redshifts. Specifically, the voxel intensity distribution of intensity maps provides access to small-scale information, which makes it highly sensitive to signatures of PMFs on matter overdensities. We present forecasts for future LIM CO surveys, finding that they can constrain PMF strength as small as $B_{\rm 1Mpc}\sim0.006-1\,{\rm nG}$, depending on the magnetic spectral index and the targeted redshifts., Comment: 10 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables; In v2 we used a revised version for the PMFs calculations

The fluctuations in the dark matter-baryon relative velocity field are imprinted as acoustic oscillations in the 21-cm power spectrum during cosmic dawn (CD). These velocity acoustic oscillations (VAOs) keep the imprints of the comoving sound horizon scale. In a previous work by Mu\~noz, it has been demonstrated that these VAOs can be treated as standard rulers to measure the cosmic expansion rate at high redshifts by considering a variety of Lyman-Werner feedback strengths and foreground contamination scenarios. Here we extend that analysis by using a modified version of the public code \texttt{21cmFAST}. We use this code to simulate the VAOs in 21-cm power spectrum and forecast the potential to constrain $H(z)$ with the HERA radio telescope, taking into account the effects of Lyman-$\alpha$ heating, Lyman-Werner feedback and foregrounds, the dependence on various astrophysical parameters, and the degeneracy with cosmological parameters. We find that $H(z)$ can be measured with HERA at $\sim 0.3-6\%$ relative accuracy in the range $11 < z < 20$, under different astrophysical and foreground scenarios, with uncertainties in the Planck cosmological parameters setting a $\sim 0.08-0.2\%$ relative-error floor in the measurement. Pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) are sensitive to oscillations in the gravitational potential along the line-of-sight due to ultralight particle pressure. We calculate the probing power of PTAs for ultralight bosons across all frequencies, from those larger than the inverse observation time to those smaller than the inverse distance to the pulsar. We show that since the signal amplitude grows comparably to the degradation in PTA sensitivity at frequencies smaller than inverse observation time, the discovery potential can be extended towards lower masses by over three decades, maintaining high precision. We demonstrate that, in the mass range $10^{-26} -10^{-23}$ eV, existing 15-year PTA data can robustly detect or rule out an ultralight component down to $O(1 - 10)\%$ of the total dark matter. Non-detection, together with other bounds in different mass ranges, will imply that ultralight scalar/axion can comprise at most $1-10\%$ of dark matter in the $10^{-30}\!-\!10^{-17}$ eV range. With 30 years of observation, current PTAs can extend the reach down to $0.1-1 \%$, while next-generation PTAs such as SKA can attain the $0.01-0.1\%$ precision. One of the toughest challenges in modern cosmology is to probe the small scales $k \sim 0.5\,$Mpc$^{-1}$ in the matter power spectrum and clustering. We show that such small scales will be accessible via upcoming line-intensity mapping surveys, with carbon monoxide (CO) emission from star-forming galaxies at high redshifts as an example. While these galaxies cannot be individually detected and the two-point correlations of the intensity fluctuation maps is not accessible at these scales, the voxel intensity distribution (VID) of the highly non-Gaussian intensity maps is sensitive to the integrated emission from faint sources. As we describe, the main limitations are due to uncertainties related with the halo mass function and the CO emission model. We show that via the VID, high-redshift next-generation experiments can probe deviations from $\Lambda$CDM of order unity, while stage-3 experiments will be able to probe deviations as small as $\lesssim10\%$ at least up to $k\sim 10\,$Mpc$^{-1}$., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Fuzzy dark matter (FDM) is a well motivated candidate for dark matter (DM) as its tiny mass and large de-Broglie wavelength suppress small-scale matter fluctuations, thereby solving some of the small-scale discrepancies in $\Lambda$CDM. Although it has been ruled out as the single component of DM by several observables, there is still a region in the FDM parameter space (the "FDM window", $10^{-25}\,\mathrm{eV}\lesssim m_\mathrm{FDM}\lesssim10^{-23}\,\mathrm{eV}$) where FDM is allowed to comprise a large portion of the total DM. In this work, for the first time, we study the signature of FDM (comprised of ultra-light axions) in fractions less than unity on the 21cm signal and its detectability by 21cm interferometers such as HERA, taking into account the degeneracy with both astrophysical and cosmological parameters, using a new pipeline that combines modified versions of the CAMB and 21cmFAST codes. Line-intensity mapping (LIM) is an emerging approach to survey the Universe, using relatively low-aperture instruments to scan large portions of the sky and collect the total spectral-line emission from galaxies and the intergalactic medium. Mapping the intensity fluctuations of an array of lines offers a unique opportunity to probe redshifts well beyond the reach of other cosmological observations, access regimes that cannot be explored otherwise, and exploit the enormous potential of cross-correlations with other measurements. This promises to deepen our understanding of various questions related to galaxy formation and evolution, cosmology, and fundamental physics. Here we focus on lines ranging from microwave to optical frequencies, the emission of which is related to star formation in galaxies across cosmic history. Over the next decade, LIM will transition from a pathfinder era of first detections to an early-science era where data from more than a dozen missions will be harvested to yield new insights and discoveries. This review discusses the primary target lines for these missions, describes the different approaches to modeling their intensities and fluctuations, surveys the scientific prospects of their measurement, presents the formalism behind the statistical methods to analyze the data, and motivates the opportunities for synergy with other observables. In the fuzzy dark matter (FDM) model, dark matter is composed of ultra-light particles with a de Broglie wavelength of $\sim$kpc, above which it behaves like cold dark matter (CDM). Due to this, FDM suppresses the growth of structure on small scales, which delays the onset of the cosmic dawn (CD) and the subsequent epoch of reionization (EoR). This leaves potential signatures in the sky averaged 21-cm signal (global), as well as in the 21-cm fluctuations, which can be sought for with ongoing and future 21-cm global and intensity mapping experiments. To do so reliably, it is crucial to include effects such as the dark-matter/baryon relative velocity and Lyman-Werner star-formation feedback, which also act as delaying mechanisms, as well as CMB and \lya heating effects, which can significantly change the amplitude and timing of the signal, depending on the strength of X-ray heating sourced by the remnants of the first stars. Here we model the 21-cm signal in FDM cosmologies across CD and EoR using a modified version of the public code 21cmvFAST that accounts for all these additional effects, and is directly interfaced with the Boltzmann code CLASS so that degeneracies between cosmological and astrophysical parameters can be fully explored. We examine the prospects to distinguish between the CDM and FDM models and forecast joint astrophysical, cosmological and FDM parameter constraints achievable with intensity mapping experiments such as HERA and global signal experiments like EDGES. We find that HERA will be able to detect FDM particle masses up to $m_{\rm FDM}\! \sim \!10^{-19}\,{\rm eV}\!-\!10^{-18}\,{\rm eV}$, depending on foreground assumptions, despite the mitigating effect of the delaying and heating mechanisms included in the analysis., Comment: 18 Pages, 10 Figures, 2 Tables

Strong lensing of Fast Radio Bursts (FBRs) has been proposed as a relatively clean probe of primordial black hole (PBH) dark matter. Recently, the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) published a first catalog of 536 FRBs, 62 of which are from repeating sources. In light of this new data, we re-examine the prospects to constrain the abundance of PBHs via FRBs. Extending previous forecasts, we calculate a PBH dark matter bound using the intrinsic burst width and a calibrated flux-ratio threshold per FRB. In addition, we take into account the uncertainty in the relation between the FRB dispersion measure and source redshift. We outline an algorithm to detect lensed FRBs and a method to simulate its performance on real data and set a flux-ratio threshold for each event, which we use to infer realistic forecasts. We then attempt to extract a preliminary bound using the publicly available CHIME data. Unfortunately, both instrumental noise and the provided ~1 ms time-resolution of the public data hinder this effort. We identify one candidate event where a double burst could be explained via strong lensing by a 10 solar-mass PBH, which will require follow-up study at higher time resolution to either confirm or discard. We show that with a few times the size of the first catalog -- sampled at the full instrumental time-resolution so that candidates can be efficiently scrutinized -- CHIME will be able to find strong evidence for or robustly rule out PBHs with mass above 10 solar masses as the dark matter. The rapid accumulation of observed Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs) originating from cosmological distances makes it likely that some will be strongly lensed by intervening matter along the line of sight. Detection of lensed FRB repeaters, which account for a noteworthy fraction of the total population, will allow not only an accurate measurement of the lensing time delay, but also follow-up high-resolution observations to pinpoint the location of the lensed images. Recent works proposed to use such strongly-lensed FRBs to derive constraints on the current expansion rate $ H_{0} $ as well as on cosmic curvature. Here we study the prospects for placing constraints on departures from general relativity via such systems. Using an ensemble of simulated events, we focus on the gravitational slip parameter $\gamma_{\rm PN}$ in screened modified gravity models and show that FRB time-delay measurements can yield constraints as tight as $ \left| \gamma_{\rm PN}-1\right| \lesssim 0.04\times(\Lambda/100\rm kpc)\times[N/10]^{-1/2} $ at $1\sigma$ with $10$ detections., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The discrepancy between early-Universe inferences and direct measurements of the Hubble constant, known as the Hubble tension, recently became a pressing subject in high precision cosmology. As a result, a large variety of theoretical models have been proposed to relieve this tension. In this work we analyze a conformally-coupled modified gravity (CCMG) model of an evolving gravitational constant due to the coupling of a scalar field to the Ricci scalar, which becomes active around matter-radiation equality, as required for solutions to the Hubble tension based on increasing the sound horizon at recombination. The model is theoretically advantageous as it has only one free parameter in addition to the baseline $\Lambda$CDM ones. Inspired by similar recent analyses of so-called early-dark-energy models, we constrain the CCMG model using a combination of early and late-Universe cosmological datasets. In addition to the Planck 2018 cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies and weak lensing measurements, baryon acoustic oscillations and the Supernova H0 for the Equation of State datasets, we also use large-scale structure (LSS) datasets such as the Dark Energy Survey year 1 and the full-shape power spectrum likelihood from the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey, including its recent analysis using effective field theory, to check the effect of the CCMG model on the (milder) S8 tension between the CMB and LSS. We find that the CCMG model can slightly relax the Hubble tension, with $H_0 = 69.6 \pm 1.6$ km/s/Mpc at 95% CL, while barely affecting the S8 tension. However, current data does not exhibit strong preference for CCMG over the standard cosmological model. Lastly, we show that the planned CMB-S4 experiment will have the sensitivity required to distinguish between the CCMG model and the more general class of models involving an evolving gravitational constant., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures, 9 tables

CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the Universe, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth of structure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool, targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. Next generation cosmic microwave background spectral distortion and pulsar timing array experiments have the potential to probe primordial fluctuations at small scales with remarkable sensitivity. We demonstrate the potential of these probes to either detect signatures of primordial black holes (PBHs) sourced from primordial overdensities within the standard thermal history of the universe over a 13-decade mass range ${\cal O}(0.1-10^{12})M_\odot$, or constrain their existence to a negligible abundance. Our conclusions are based only on global cosmological signals, and are robust under changes in i) the statistical properties of the primordial density fluctuations (whether Gaussian or non-Gaussian), ii) the merger and accretion history of the PBHs and assumptions about associated astrophysical processes, and iii) clustering statistics. Any positive detection of enhanced primordial fluctuations at small scales would have far-reaching implications from the content of dark matter to origin of BHs in the centers of galaxies, and to the field content of the inflation. On the other hand, their non-detection would also have important corollaries. For example, non-detection up to forecast sensitivities would tell us that PBHs larger than a fraction of a solar mass can constitute no more than a negligible fraction of dark matter. Moreover, non-detection will also rule out the scenario that PBHs generated by primordial overdensities could be the progenitors of super-massive black holes (SMBHs), of topical interest as there are only a few widely accepted proposals for the formation of SMBHs, an even more pressing question after the detection of active galactic nuclei over a billion solar masses at redshifts $z \geq 7$. The advanced LIGO O3a run catalog has been recently published, and it includes several events with unexpected mass properties, including mergers with individual masses in the lower and upper mass gaps, as well as mergers with unusually small mass ratios between the binary components. Here we entertain the possibility that these outliers are the outcome of hierarchical mergers of black holes or neutron stars in the dense environments of globular clusters. We use the coagulation equation to study the evolution of the black hole mass function within a typical cluster. Our prescription allows us to monitor how various global quantities change with time, such as the total mass and number of compact objects in the cluster, its overall merger rate, and the probability to form intermediate-mass black holes via a runaway process. By accounting for the LIGO observational bias, we predict the merger event distributions with respect to various variables such as the individual masses M1 and M2, their ratio q, and redshift z, and we compare our predictions with the published O3a data. We study how these distributions depend on the merger-rate and ejections parameters and produce forecasts for the (tight) constraints that can be placed on our model parameters using the future dataset of the O5 run. We present a new estimator for the cross-correlation signal between line intensity maps to probe the Epoch of Reionization. The proposed estimator is the hitherto neglected antisymmetric component of the cross-correlation, under the exchange of line-of-sight positions. We consider the cross-correlation between HI and CO fluctuations, and forecast the improvement in precision on reionization parameters when the antisymmetric contribution is accounted for. As a way to break the degeneracy between astrophysics and cosmology in the intensity mapping power spectrum, we study the ratio between the antisymmetric and symmetric components. While our results depend on the highly uncertain astrophysical modelling, we show that in most standard scenarios including the antisymmetric contribution as a complementary probe can lead to a significant gain in information., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures

This paper discusses the science case for a sensitive spectro-polarimetric survey of the microwave sky. Such a survey would provide a tomographic and dynamic census of the three-dimensional distribution of hot gas, velocity flows, early metals, dust, and mass distribution in the entire Hubble volume, exploit CMB temperature and polarisation anisotropies down to fundamental limits, and track energy injection and absorption into the radiation background across cosmic times by measuring spectral distortions of the CMB blackbody emission. In addition to its exceptional capability for cosmology and fundamental physics, such a survey would provide an unprecedented view of microwave emissions at sub-arcminute to few-arcminute angular resolution in hundreds of frequency channels, a data set that would be of immense legacy value for many branches of astrophysics. We propose that this survey be carried-out with a large space mission featuring a broad-band polarised imager and a moderate resolution spectro-imager at the focus of a 3.5m aperture telescope actively cooled to about 8K, complemented with absolutely-calibrated Fourier Transform Spectrometer modules observing at degree-scale angular resolution in the 10-2000 GHz frequency range. This paper outlines the science case for line-intensity mapping with a space-borne instrument targeting the sub-millimeter (microwaves) to the far-infrared (FIR) wavelength range. Our goal is to observe and characterize the large-scale structure in the Universe from present times to the high redshift Epoch of Reionization. This is essential to constrain the cosmology of our Universe and form a better understanding of various mechanisms that drive galaxy formation and evolution. We argue that the proposed frequency range would make it possible to probe important metal cooling lines such as [CII] up to very high redshift as well as a large number of rotational lines of the CO molecule. These can be used to trace molecular gas and dust evolution and constrain the buildup in both the cosmic star formation rate density and the cosmic infrared background (CIB). Moreover, surveys at the highest frequencies will detect FIR lines which are used as diagnostics of galaxies and AGN. Tomography of these lines over a wide redshift range will enable invaluable measurements of the cosmic expansion history at epochs inaccessible to other methods, competitive constraints on the parameters of the standard model of cosmology, and numerous tests of dark matter, dark energy, modified gravity and inflation. To reach these goals, large-scale structure must be mapped over a wide range in frequency to trace its time evolution over a reasonable fraction of the volume of the observable Universe. In addition, the surveyed area needs to be very large to beat cosmic variance and to probe the largest scales where its easier to separate the astrophysical and cosmological contributions to the observed signal. Line-intensity mapping (LIM) of emission form star-forming galaxies can be used to measure the baryon acoustic oscillation (BAO) scale as far back as the epoch of reionization. This provides a standard cosmic ruler to constrain the expansion rate of the Universe at redshifts which cannot be directly probed otherwise. In light of growing tension between measurements of the current expansion rate using the local distance ladder and those inferred from the cosmic microwave background, extending the constraints on the expansion history to bridge between the late and early Universe is of paramount importance. Using a newly derived methodology to robustly extract cosmological information from LIM, which minimizes the inherent degeneracy with unknown astrophysics, we show that present and future experiments can gradually improve the measurement precision of the expansion rate history, ultimately reaching percent-level constraints on the BAO scale. Specifically, we provide detailed forecasts for the SPHEREx satellite, which will target the H$\alpha$ and Lyman-$\alpha$ lines, and for the ground-based COMAP instrument---as well as a future stage-3 experiment---that will target the CO rotational lines. Line-intensity mapping (LIM) provides a promising way to probe cosmology, reionization and galaxy evolution. However, its sensitivity to cosmology and astrophysics at the same time is also a nuisance. Here we develop a comprehensive framework for modelling the LIM power spectrum, which includes redshift space distortions and the Alcock-Paczynski effect. We then identify and isolate degeneracies with astrophysics so that they can be marginalized over. We study the gains of using the multipole expansion of the anisotropic power spectrum, providing an accurate analytic expression for their covariance, and find a 10%-60% increase in the precision of the baryon acoustic oscillation scale measurements when including the hexadecapole in the analysis. We discuss different observational strategies when targeting other cosmological parameters, such as the sum of neutrino masses or primordial non-Gaussianity, finding that fewer and wider bins are typically more optimal. Large-amplitude density perturbations may have collapsed during the radiation dominated epoch of the Universe to form primordial black holes (PBHs). There are several constraints to the abundance of PBHs that stem from evaporation or gravitational effects. Due to the connection between primordial perturbations and the formation of PBHs, constraints on the present-day abundance of PBHs can be translated into limits on the primordial curvature power spectrum. We introduce several new observational and forecasted constraints to the amplitude of the primordial power spectrum and incorporate in our analysis uncertainties in the critical overdensity for collapse and considerations of ellipsoidal collapse. The expansion of the Universe is understood to have accelerated during two epochs: in its very first moments during a period of Inflation and much more recently, at $z < 1$, when Dark Energy is hypothesized to drive cosmic acceleration. The undiscovered mechanisms behind these two epochs represent some of the most important open problems in fundamental physics. The large cosmological volume at $2 < z < 5$, together with the ability to efficiently target high-$z$ galaxies with known techniques, enables large gains in the study of Inflation and Dark Energy. A future spectroscopic survey can test the Gaussianity of the initial conditions up to a factor of ~50 better than our current bounds, crossing the crucial theoretical threshold of $\sigma(f_{NL}^{\rm local})$ of order unity that separates single field and multi-field models. Heat transfer between baryons and millicharged dark matter has been invoked as a possible explanation for the anomalous 21-cm absorption signal seen by EDGES. Prior work has shown that the solution requires that millicharged particles make up only a fraction $(m_\chi/{\rm MeV})\ 0.0115\% \lesssim f \lesssim 0.4\%$ of the dark matter and that their mass $m_\chi$ and charge $q_\chi$ have values $0.1 \lesssim (m_\chi/{\rm MeV})\lesssim 10$ and $10^{-6} \lesssim (q_\chi/e)\lesssim 10^{-4}$. Here we show that such particles come into chemical equilibrium before recombination, and so are subject to a constraint on the effective number $N_{\rm eff}$ of relativistic degrees of freedom, which we update using Planck 2018 data. We moreover determine the precise relic abundance $f$ that results for a given mass $m_\chi$ and charge $q_\chi$ and incorporate this abundance into the constraints on the millicharged-dark-matter solution to EDGES. The hot dense environment of the early universe is known to have produced large numbers of baryons, photons, and neutrinos. These extreme conditions may have also produced other long-lived species, including new light particles (such as axions or sterile neutrinos) or gravitational waves. The gravitational effects of any such light relics can be observed through their unique imprint in the cosmic microwave background (CMB), the large-scale structure, and the primordial light element abundances, and are important in determining the initial conditions of the universe. We argue that future cosmological observations, in particular improved maps of the CMB on small angular scales, can be orders of magnitude more sensitive for probing the thermal history of the early universe than current experiments. These observations offer a unique and broad discovery space for new physics in the dark sector and beyond, even when its effects would not be visible in terrestrial experiments or in astrophysical environments. Line-Intensity Mapping is an emerging technique which promises new insights into the evolution of the Universe, from star formation at low redshifts to the epoch of reionization and cosmic dawn. It measures the integrated emission of atomic and molecular spectral lines from galaxies and the intergalactic medium over a broad range of frequencies, using instruments with aperture requirements that are greatly relaxed relative to surveys for single objects. A coordinated, comprehensive, multi-line intensity-mapping experimental effort can efficiently probe over 80% of the volume of the observable Universe - a feat beyond the reach of other methods. Line-intensity mapping will uniquely address a wide array of pressing mysteries in galaxy evolution, cosmology, and fundamental physics. Astrophysical observations currently provide the only robust, empirical measurements of dark matter. In the coming decade, astrophysical observations will guide other experimental efforts, while simultaneously probing unique regions of dark matter parameter space. This white paper summarizes astrophysical observations that can constrain the fundamental physics of dark matter in the era of LSST. Our current understanding of the Universe is established through the pristine measurements of structure in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the distribution and shapes of galaxies tracing the large scale structure (LSS) of the Universe. One key ingredient that underlies cosmological observables is that the field that sources the observed structure is assumed to be initially Gaussian with high precision. Nevertheless, a minimal deviation from Gaussianityis perhaps the most robust theoretical prediction of models that explain the observed Universe; itis necessarily present even in the simplest scenarios. In addition, most inflationary models produce far higher levels of non-Gaussianity. The LIGO/Virgo gravitational-wave (GW) interferometers have to-date detected ten merging black hole (BH) binaries, some with masses considerably larger than had been anticipated. Stellar-mass BH binaries at the high end of the observed mass range (with "chirp mass" ${\cal M} \gtrsim 25 M_{\odot}$) should be detectable by a space-based GW observatory years before those binaries become visible to ground-based GW detectors. This white paper discusses some of the synergies that result when the same binaries are observed by instruments in space and on the ground. We consider intermediate-mass black hole binaries (with total mass $M \sim 10^2 -10^4 M_{\odot}$) as well as stellar-mass black hole binaries. We illustrate how combining space-based and ground-based data sets can break degeneracies and thereby improve our understanding of the binary's physical parameters. While early work focused on how space-based observatories can forecast precisely when some mergers will be observed on the ground, the reverse is also important: ground-based detections will allow us to "dig deeper" into archived, space-based data to confidently identify black hole inspirals whose signal-to-noise ratios were originally sub-threshold, increasing the number of binaries observed in both bands by a factor of $\sim 4 - 7$., Comment: White Paper submitted to Astro2020 (2020 Decadal Survey on Astronomy and Astrophysics)

Opening up a new window of millimeter-wave observations that span frequency bands in the range of 30 to 500 GHz, survey half the sky, and are both an order of magnitude deeper (about 0.5 uK-arcmin) and of higher-resolution (about 10 arcseconds) than currently funded surveys would yield an enormous gain in understanding of both fundamental physics and astrophysics. Low-frequency gravitational-wave astronomy can perform precision tests of general relativity and probe fundamental physics in a regime previously inaccessible. Different inflationary models predict oscillatory features in the primordial power spectrum. These can leave an imprint on both the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and the large-scale structure (LSS) of our Universe, that can be searched for with current data. Inspired by the axion-monodromy model of inflation, we search for primordial oscillations that are logarithmic in wavenumber, using both CMB data from the Planck satellite and LSS data from the WiggleZ galaxy survey. We find that, within our search range for the new oscillation parameters (amplitude, frequency and phase), both CMB-only and CMB+LSS data yield the same best-fit oscillation frequency of $\log_{10}\omega=1.5$, improving the fit over $\Lambda$CDM by $\Delta\chi^2\! =\! -9$ and $\Delta\chi^2\! =\! -13$ (roughly corresponding to $2\sigma$ and $2.8\sigma$ significance), respectively. Bayesian evidence for the log-oscillation model versus $\Lambda$CDM indicates a very slight preference for the latter. The Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) is an all-sky survey in radio-continuum which uses the Australian SKA Pathfinder (ASKAP). Using galaxy angular power spectrum and the integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect, we study the potential of EMU to constrain models beyond $\Lambda$CDM (i.e., local primordial non-Gaussianity, dynamical dark energy, spatial curvature and deviations from general relativity), for different design sensitivities. We also include a multi-tracer analysis, distinguishing between star-forming galaxies and galaxies with an active galactic nucleus, to further improve EMU's potential. We find that EMU could measure the dark energy equation of state parameters around 35\% more precisely than existing constraints, and that the constraints on $f_{\rm NL}$ and modified gravity parameters will improve up to a factor $\sim2$ with respect to Planck and redshift space distortions measurements. Compact dark matter has been efficiently constrained in the M <~ 10 M_sun mass range by null searches for microlensing of stars in nearby galaxies. Here we propose to probe the mass range M >~ 10 M_sun by seeking echoes in gamma-ray-burst light curves induced by strong lensing. We show that strong gravitational lensing of gamma ray bursts (GRBs) by massive compact halo objects (MACHOs) generates superimposed GRB images with a characteristic time delay of >~ 1 ms for M >~ 10 M_sun. Using dedicated simulations to capture the relevant phenomenology of the GRB prompt emission, we calculate the signal-to-noise ratio required to detect GRB lensing events as a function of the flux ratio and time delay between the lensed images. We then analyze existing data from the Fermi/GBM and Swift/BAT instruments to assess their constraining power on the compact dark matter fraction f_DM. We find that this data is noise limited, and therefore localization-based masking of background photons is a key ingredient. Future observatories with better sensitivity will be able to probe down to the f_ DM >~ 1% level across the 10 M_sun <~ M <~ 1000 M_sun mass range., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures; important references added

Ultra-light hidden-photon dark matter produces an oscillating electric field in the early Universe plasma, which in turn induces an electric current in its ionized component whose dissipation results in heat transfer from the dark matter to the plasma. This will affect the global 21cm signal from the Dark Ages and Cosmic Dawn. In this work we focus on the latter, in light of the reported detection by the EDGES collaboration of an absorption signal at frequencies corresponding to redshift z~17. By measuring the 21cm global signal, a limit can be placed on the amount of gas heating, and thus the kinetic mixing strength $\varepsilon$ between the hidden and ordinary photons can be constrained. Our inferred 21cm bounds on $\varepsilon$ in the mass range $10^{-23}\,{\rm eV}\lesssim m_\chi\lesssim10^{-13}\,{\rm eV}$ are the strongest to date., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures
