Abstract

The spin structure functions of the proton and the deuteron were measured during the EG4 experiment at Jefferson Lab in 2006. Data were collected for longitudinally polarized electron scattering off longitudinally polarized NH$_3$ and ND$_3$ targets, for $Q^2$ values as small as 0.012 and 0.02 GeV$^2$, respectively, using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). This is the archival paper of the EG4 experiment that summaries the previously reported results of the polarized structure functions $g_1$, $A_1F_1$, and their moments $\overline \Gamma_1$, $\overline \gamma_0$, and $\overline I_{TT}$, for both the proton and the deuteron. In addition, we report on new results on the neutron $g_1$ extracted by combining proton and deuteron data and correcting for Fermi smearing, and on the neutron moments $\overline \Gamma_1$, $\overline \gamma_0$, and $\overline I_{TT}$ formed directly from those of the proton and the deuteron. Our data are in good agreement with the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule for the proton, deuteron, and neutron. Furthermore, the isovector combination was formed for $g_1$ and the Bjorken integral $\overline \Gamma_1^{p-n}$, and compared to available theoretical predictions. All of our results provide for the first time extensive tests of spin observable predictions from chiral effective field theory ($\chi$EFT) in a $Q^2$ range commensurate with the pion mass. They motivate further improvement in $\chi$EFT calculations from other approaches such as the lattice gauge method., Comment: 33 pages. 26 figures. Abstract

High-harmonic generation (HHG) normally requires a careful adjustment of the driving laser intensity (typically $10^{14} - 10^{15}$ W/cm$^2$) and gas medium parameters to enable good phase matching conditions. In contrast with conventional wisdom, we present experimental results indicating phase-matched HHG in all rare gases, using a high-density medium and a driver laser intensity of around $10^{16}$ W/cm$^2$. The experimental results are corroborated by theoretical simulations, which indicate that ionization-induced self-phase modulation and plasma defocusing self-regulate the driver laser intensity to a level that is appropriate for good phase matching. A ten-fold broadening of the NIR spectrum is observed, which results in the generation of continuous spectra from $18-140$ eV in spite of using 50-fs-long driving pulses. The presented scheme represents a simple and versatile concept for the generation of XUV and soft X-ray continua, which are ideally suited for transient absorption and reflection spectroscopy., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

The ongoing development of intense high-harmonic generation (HHG) sources has recently enabled highly nonlinear ionization of atoms by the absorption of at least 10 extreme-ultraviolet (XUV) photons within a single atom [Senfftleben \textit{et al.}, arXiv1911.01375]. Here we investigate the role that reshaping of the fundamental, few-cycle, near-infrared (NIR) driving laser within the 30-cm-long HHG Xe medium plays in the generation of the intense HHG pulses. Using an incident NIR intensity that is higher than what is required for phase-matched HHG, signatures of reshaping are found by measuring the NIR blueshift and the fluorescence from the HHG medium along the propagation axis. These results are well reproduced by numerical calculations that show temporal compression of the NIR pulses in the HHG medium. The simulations predict that after refocusing an XUV beam waist radius of 320 nm and a clean attosecond pulse train can be obtained in the focal plane, with an estimated XUV peak intensity of 9x10^15 W/cm^2. Our results show that XUV intensities that were previously only available at large-scale facilities can now be obtained using moderately powerful table-top light sources., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

In this study glochidia as most sensitive life-stage of bivalves were used to evaluate the toxicity of copper, zinc and lead. Sensitivity of three species, Anodonta anatina, Pseudanodonta complanata and Unio tumiduswere compared to copper and zinc, based on 24 and 48 h LC50s. The copper 24 h LC50 showed the lowest value (26.8 μg·L-1) for Unio tumidus glochidia. After 48 h exposure, close LC50 values, 18.9 and 19.0 μg·L-1, were recorded for A. anatina and U. tumidus glochidia, respectively. U. tumidus glochidia exhibited the highest sensitivity to zinc (48 h LC50 = 134.2 μg·L-1) followed by P. complanata (48 h LC50 = 201.6 μg·L-1) and A. anatina (48 h LC50 = 233.5 μg·L-1). Toxicity of lead to P. complanata glochidia was estimated, 24 and 48 h LC50s of lead to 374.6 and 260.8 μg·L-1, respectively. No observed effect concentrations (NOECs) for the tested metals exhibited species differences. All NOECs exceeded environmental quality standards (EQS), therefore these species are at risk only in such European freshwaters which have extreme concentration of these metals. Synergistic effect was reported for the combinations of Cu + Zn and Cu + Pb, additive effect was reported for Zn + Pb.

Abstract

The ratio of the electric and magnetic form factor of the proton, $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$, has been measured for elastic electron-proton scattering with polarized beam and target up to four-momentum transfer squared, $Q^2=5.66$ (GeV/c)$^2$ using the double spin asymmetry for target spin orientation aligned nearly perpendicular to the beam momentum direction. This measurement of $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ agrees with the $Q^2$ dependence of previous recoil polarization data and reconfirms the discrepancy at high $Q^2$ between the Rosenbluth and the polarization-transfer method with a different measurement technique and systematic uncertainties uncorrelated to those of the recoil-polarization measurements. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=2.06 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been measured as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p = 0.720 \pm 0.176_{stat} \pm 0.039_{sys}$, which is in agreement with an earlier measurement with the polarized target technique at similar kinematics. The form factor ratio at $Q^2$=5.66 (GeV/c)$^2$ has been determined as $\mu_p G_E^p/G_M^p=0.244\pm0.353_{stat}\pm0.013_{sys}$, which represents the highest $Q^2$ reach with the double spin asymmetry with polarized target to date.

Abstract

The Spin Asymmetries of the Nucleon Experiment (SANE) measured two double spin asymmetries using a polarized proton target and polarized electron beam at two beam energies, 4.7 GeV and 5.9 GeV. A large-acceptance open-configuration detector package identified scattered electrons at 40$^{\circ}$ and covered a wide range in Bjorken $x$ ($0.3 < x < 0.8$). Proportional to an average color Lorentz force, the twist-3 matrix element, $\tilde{d}_2^p$, was extracted from the measured asymmetries at $Q^2$ values ranging from 2.0 to 6.0 GeV$^2$. The data display the opposite sign compared to most quark models, including the lattice QCD result, and an apparently unexpected scale dependence. Furthermore when combined with the neutron data in the same $Q^2$ range the results suggest a flavor independent average color Lorentz force.

Abstract

We measured the $g_1$ spin structure function of the deuteron at low $Q^{2}$, where QCD can be approximated with chiral perturbation theory ($\chi$PT). The data cover the resonance region, up to an invariant mass of $W\approx1.9$~GeV. The generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum, the moment $\bar{\Gamma}_{1}^{d}$ and the integral $\bar{I}_\gamma^d$ related to the spin polarizability $\gamma_{0}^{d}$ are precisely determined down to a minimum $Q^2$ of 0.02~GeV$^2$ for the first time, about 2.5 times lower than that of previous data. We compare them to several $\chi$PT calculations and models. These results are the first in a program of benchmark measurements of polarization observables in the $\chi$PT domain., Comment: Version 1: version published in Phys. Rev. Lett. 6 pages, 3 figures. Abstract

We report measurements of target- and double-spin asymmetries for the exclusive channel $\vec e\vec p\to e\pi^+ (n)$ in the nucleon resonance region at Jefferson Lab using the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS). These asymmetries were extracted from data obtained using a longitudinally polarized NH$_3$ target and a longitudinally polarized electron beam with energies 1.1, 1.3, 2.0, 2.3 and 3.0 GeV. The new results are consistent with previous CLAS publications but are extended to a low $Q^2$ range from $0.0065$ to $0.35$ (GeV$/c$)$^2$. The $Q^2$ access was made possible by a custom-built Cherenkov detector that allowed the detection of electrons for scattering angles as low as $6^\circ$. These results are compared with the unitary isobar models JANR and MAID, the partial-wave analysis prediction from SAID and the dynamic model DMT. In many kinematic regions our results, in particular results on the target asymmetry, help to constrain the polarization-dependent components of these models., Comment: 20 pages, 15 figures, to appear in Phys. Abstract

Nonlinear optical methods are becoming ubiquitous in many areas of modern photonics. They are, however, often limited to a certain range of input parameters, such as pulse energy and average power, since restrictions arise from, for example, parasitic nonlinear effects, damage problems and geometrical considerations. Here, we show that many nonlinear optics phenomena in gaseous media are scale-invariant if spatial coordinates, gas density and laser pulse energy are scaled appropriately. We develop a general scaling model for (3+1)-dimensional wave equations, demonstrating the invariant scaling of nonlinear pulse propagation in gases. Our model is numerically applied to high-order harmonic generation and filamentation as well as experimentally verified using the example of pulse post-compression via filamentation. Our results provide a simple recipe for up-or downscaling of nonlinear processes in gases with numerous applications in many areas of science., Comment: This manuscript has 9 pages including 3 figures and two tables

11. Brittle to Ductile Transition in a Fiber Bundle with Strong Heterogeneity

Abstract

We analyze the failure process of a two-component system with widely different fracture strength in the framework of a fiber bundle model with localized load sharing. A fraction 0\leq \alpha \leq 1 of the bundle is strong and it is represented by unbreakable fibers, while fibers of the weak component have randomly distributed failure strength. Computer simulations revealed that there exists a critical composition \alpha_c which separates two qualitatively different behaviors: below the critical point the failure of the bundle is brittle characterized by an abrupt damage growth within the breakable part of the system. Above \alpha_c, however, the macroscopic response becomes ductile providing stability during the entire breaking process. The transition occurs at an astonishingly low fraction of strong fibers which can have importance for applications. We show that in the ductile phase the size distribution of breaking bursts has a power law functional form with an exponent \mu=2 followed by an exponential cutoff. In the brittle phase the power law also prevails but with a higher exponent \mu=9/2. The transition between the two phases shows analogies to continuous phase transitions. Analyzing the microstructure of the damage, it was found that at the beginning of the fracture process cracks nucleate randomly, while later on growth and coalescence of cracks dominate which give rise to power law distributed crack sizes., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

13. Universality class of fiber bundles with strong heterogeneities

Abstract

We study the effect of strong heterogeneities on the fracture of disordered materials using a fiber bundle model. The bundle is composed of two subsets of fibers, i.e. a fraction 0<\alpha<1 of fibers is unbreakable, while the remaining 1-\alpha fraction is characterized by a distribution of breaking thresholds. Assuming global load sharing, we show analytically that there exists a critical fraction of the components \alpha_c which separates two qualitatively different regimes of the system: below \alpha_c the burst size distribution is a power law with the usual exponent \tau=5/2, while above \alpha_c the exponent switches to a lower value \tau=9/4 and a cutoff function occurs with a diverging characteristic size. Analyzing the macroscopic response of the system we demonstrate that the transition is conditioned to disorder distributions where the constitutive curve has a single maximum and an inflexion point defining a novel universality class of breakdown phenomena.

15. A spring-block model for Barkhausen noise

Abstract

A simple mechanical spring-block model is introduced for studying magnetization phenomena and in particularly the Barkhausen noise. The model captures and reproduces the accepted microscopic picture of domain wall movement and pinning. Computer simulations suggest that this model is able to reproduce the main characteristics of hysteresis loops and Barkhausen jumps. In the thermodynamic limit the statistics of the obtained Barkhausen jumps follows several scaling laws, in qualitative agreement with the experimental results. The simplicity of the model and the invoked mechanical analogies makes it attractive for computer simulations and pedagogical purposes., Comment: Revtex, 8 pages, 6 figures

22. The H2020 REFLECT project: Deliverable 3.2 – The REFLECT European Fluid Atlas

Abstract

The recent deliverable describes the development and the characteristics of the European Fluid Atlas (EFA) created in the frame of the REFLECT project by University of Miskolc. In the Atlas, formerly existing and newly measured data of geothermal fluids are visualised. Fluid data were collected from 21 European countries. The layers provide point feature information presented on a base map, including geography, geology, and depth range, as well as physical, chemical and microbial properties of fluids. Data of wells, rocks and reservoirs are also available. The focus is on fluids used for electricity generation (> 100 °C), but data from heat projects are also included. A free and open-source cross-platform is used for the visualisation, in which the geographic information system provides the environment to view, edit and analyse geospatial data. The interface includes query and filtering tools to explore the database with a map-based visualization. The query results can be downloaded as an excel worksheet. By selecting the entire dataset, the downloaded report contains all the data published on EFA.

Abstract

This article discusses the role of ultrasound screening in identifying false negative results in non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT). The study, conducted at a tertiary center in Hungary, collected cases where ultrasound examinations and invasive diagnostic testing were performed following NIPT. The results showed that ultrasound was able to detect abnormalities in cases where the NIPT results were negative, preventing the birth of children with severe genetic disorders. The study highlights the importance of expert ultrasound in preventing diagnostic errors in NIPT. [Extracted from the article]

Abstract

This article discusses the use of ultrasound in obstetrics and gynecology and the need for more objective methods of measuring structures. Currently, ultrasound devices measure distances between two points, which can be subjective. The authors propose using a caliper-like tool to improve the accuracy and reproducibility of measurements. The study found that the caliper method was as precise as the traditional two-point method. The authors suggest further investigations with more cases and investigators to validate these findings.
