- Abstract
Neutron captures and delayed decays of reaction products are common sources of backgrounds in ultrarare event searches. In this work, we studied C13(α,n)O16 reactions induced by α particles emitted within the calibration sources of the Majorana Demonstrator. These sources are thorium-based calibration standards enclosed in carbon-rich materials. The reaction rate was estimated by using the 6129-keV γ rays emitted from the excited O16 states that are populated when the incoming α particles exceed the reaction Q value. Thanks to the excellent energy performance of the Demonstrator's germanium detectors, these characteristic photons can be clearly observed in the calibration data. Facilitated by Geant4 simulations, a comparison between the observed 6129-keV photon rates and predictions by a talys-based software was performed. The measurements and predictions were found to be consistent, albeit with large statistical uncertainties. This agreement provides support for background projections from (α,n) reactions in future double-beta decay search efforts.

The Majorana Collaboration is using an array of high-purity Ge detectors to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76Ge. Searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay are understood to be the only viable experimental method for testing the Majorana nature of the neutrino. Observation of this decay would imply violation of lepton number, that neutrinos are Majorana in nature, and provide information on the neutrino mass. The Majorana Demonstrator comprises 44.1 kg of p-type point-contact Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched in 76Ge) surrounded by a low-background shield system. The experiment achieved a high efficiency of converting raw Ge material to detectors and an unprecedented detector energy resolution of 2.5 keV FWHM at Qββ. The Majorana collaboration began taking physics data in 2016. This paper summarizes key construction aspects of the Demonstrator and shows preliminary results from initial data.

The MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR comprises two arrays of high-purity germanium detectors constructed to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in 76-Ge and other physics beyond the Standard Model. Its readout electronics were designed to have low electronic noise, and radioactive backgrounds were minimized by using low-mass components and low-radioactivity materials near the detectors. This paper provides a description of all components of the MAJORANA DEMONSTRATOR readout electronics, spanning the front-end electronics and internal cabling, back-end electronics, digitizer, and power supplies, along with the grounding scheme. The spectroscopic performance achieved with these readout electronics is also demonstrated., For submission to JINST, 17 figures. v2: revised version

- Abstract
The majorana demonstrator is a neutrinoless double-β decay search consisting of a low-background modular array of high-purity germanium detectors, ∼2/3 of which are enriched to 88% in Ge76. The experiment is also searching for double-beta decay of Ge76 to excited states (e.s.) in Se76. Ge76 can decay into three daughter states of Se76, with clear event signatures consisting of a ββ-decay followed by the prompt emission of one or two γ rays. This results with high probability in multi-detector coincidences. The granularity of the demonstrator detector array enables powerful discrimination of this event signature from backgrounds. Using 41.9 kg yr of isotopic exposure, the demonstrator has set world leading limits for each e.s. decay of Ge76, with 90% CL lower half-life limits in the range of (0.75-4.0)×1024 yr. In particular, for the 2ν transition to the first 0+ e.s. of Se76, a lower half-life limit of 7.5×1023 yr at 90% CL was achieved.

We present measurements of the branching fractions for the decays $B\to K \mu^{+}\mu^{-}$ and $B\to K e^{+}e^{-}$, and their ratio ($R_{K}$), using a data sample of 711 $fb^{-1}$ that contains $772 \times 10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ events. The data were collected at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. The ratio $R_{K}$ is measured in five bins of dilepton invariant-mass-squared ($q^{2}$): $q^{2} \in (0.1, 4.0), (4.0, 8.12), (1.0, 6.0)$, $(10.2, 12.8)$ and ($>14.18) GeV^{2}/c^{4}$, along with the whole $q^2$ region. The $R_{K}$ value for $q^{2} \in (1.0, 6.0) GeV^{2}/c^{4}$ is $1.03^{+0.28}_{-0.24} \pm 0.01$. The first and second uncertainties listed are statistical and systematic, respectively. All results for $R_{K}$ are consistent with Standard Model predictions. We also measure $C\!P$-averaged isospin asymmetries in the same $q^{2}$ bins. The results are consistent with a null asymmetry, with the largest difference of 2.6 standard deviations occurring for the $q^{2}\in(1.0,6.0) GeV^{2}/c^{4}$ bin in the mode with muon final states. The measured differential branching fractions, ${d\cal B}/{dq^{2}}$, are consistent with theoretical predictions for charged $B$ decays, while the corresponding values are below the expectations for neutral $B$ decays. We have also searched for lepton-flavor-violating $B \rightarrow K\mu^{\pm}e^{\mp}$ decays and set $90\%$ confidence-level upper limits on the branching fraction in the range of $10^{-8}$ for $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{+}\mu^{\pm}e^{\mp}$, and $B^{0} \rightarrow K^{0}\mu^{\pm}e^{\mp}$ modes., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures

We present a measurement of $R_{K^{\ast}}$, the branching fraction ratio ${{\cal B}(B\to K^\ast \mu^+ \mu^-)}$/ ${{\cal B}(B\to K^\ast e^+ e^-)}$, for both charged and neutral $B$ mesons. The ratio for the charged case, $R_{K{^{\ast +}}}$, is the first measurement ever performed. In addition, we report absolute branching fractions for the individual modes in bins of the squared dilepton invariant mass, $q^2$. The analysis is based on a data sample of $711~\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$, containing $772\times 10^{6}$ $B\bar B$ events, recorded at the $\Upsilon(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. The obtained results are consistent with Standard Model expectations., Comment: Submitted to PRL

Experiments searching for very rare processes such as neutrinoless double-beta decay require a detailed understanding of all sources of background. Signals from radioactive impurities present in construction and detector materials can be suppressed using a number of well-understood techniques. Background from in-situ cosmogenic interactions can be reduced by siting an experiment deep underground. However, the next generation of such experiments have unprecedented sensitivity goals of 10$^{28}$ years half-life with background rates of 10$^{-5}$cts/(keV kg yr) in the region of interest. To achieve these goals, the remaining cosmogenic background must be well understood. In the work presented here, Majorana Demonstrator data is used to search for decay signatures of meta-stable germanium isotopes. Contributions to the region of interest in energy and time are estimated using simulations, and compared to Demonstrator data. Correlated time-delayed signals are used to identify decay signatures of isotopes produced in the germanium detectors. A good agreement between expected and measured rate is found and different simulation frameworks are used to estimate the uncertainties of the predictions. The simulation campaign is then extended to characterize the background for the LEGEND experiment, a proposed tonne-scale effort searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{76}$Ge., Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures

Plastic scintillator material is used in many applications for the detection of gamma rays from radioactive material, primarily due to the sensitivity per unit cost compared to other detection materials. However, the resolution and lack of full-energy peaks in the plastic scintillator material prohibits detailed spectroscopy. Therefore, other materials such as doped sodium iodide are used for spectroscopic applications. The limited spectroscopic information can, however, be exploited in plastic scintillator materials to provide some discrimination. The discrimination between man-made and naturally occurring sources would be useful in reducing alarm screening for radiation detection applications that target man-made sources. The results of applying the limited energy information from plastic scintillator material for radiation portal monitors are discussed. - Abstract
The Majorana Collaboration is operating an array of high-purity Ge detectors to search for the neutrinoless double-β decay of Ge76. The Majorana Demonstrator consists of 44.1 kg of Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched to 88% in Ge76) split between two modules constructed from ultraclean materials. Both modules are contained in a low-background shield at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. We present updated results on the search for neutrinoless double-β decay in Ge76 with 26.0±0.5 kg yr of enriched exposure. With the Demonstrator's energy resolution of 2.53 keV FWHM at Qββ, which is the best among all neutrinoless double-β decay experiments, we observe one event in the region of interest with 0.65 events expected from the estimated background, resulting in a lower limit on the Ge76 neutrinoless double-β decay half-life of 2.7×1025 yr [90% confidence level (CL)] with a median sensitivity of 4.8×1025 yr (90% CL). Depending on the matrix elements used, a 90% CL upper limit on the effective Majorana neutrino mass in the range of 200-433 meV is obtained. The measured background in the configurations with full shielding and optimized grounding is 11.9±2.0 counts/(FWHM t yr).

- Abstract
The Majorana Demonstrator is an ultra-low-background experiment searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay in Ge76. The heavily shielded array of germanium detectors, placed nearly a mile underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, also allows searches for new exotic physics. We present the first limits for trinucleon decay-specific modes and invisible decay modes for Ge isotopes. We find a half-life limit of 4.9×1025 yr for the decay Ge76(ppn)→Zn73 e+π+ and 4.7×1025 yr for the decay Ge76(ppp)→Cu73 e+π+π+. The half-life limit for the invisible triproton decay mode of Ge76 was found to be 7.5×1024 yr.

- Abstract
The Majorana Demonstrator is searching for neutrinoless double-beta decay (0νββ) in Ge76 using arrays of point-contact germanium detectors operating at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. Background results in the 0νββ region of interest from data taken during construction, commissioning, and the start of full operations have been recently published. A pulse shape analysis cut applied to achieve this result, named AvsE, is described in this paper. This cut is developed to remove events whose waveforms are typical of multisite energy deposits while retaining (90±3.5)% of single-site events. This pulse shape discrimination is based on the relationship between the maximum current and energy, and tuned using Th228 calibration source data. The efficiency uncertainty accounts for variation across detectors, energy, and time, as well as for the position distribution difference between calibration and 0νββ events, established using simulations.

The Majorana Collaboration is operating an array of high purity Ge detectors to search for neutrinoless double-β decay in Ge76. The Majorana Demonstrator comprises 44.1 kg of Ge detectors (29.7 kg enriched in Ge76) split between two modules contained in a low background shield at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. Here we present results from data taken during construction, commissioning, and the start of full operations. We achieve unprecedented energy resolution of 2.5 keV FWHM at Qββ and a very low background with no observed candidate events in 9.95 kg yr of enriched Ge exposure, resulting in a lower limit on the half-life of 1.9×1025 yr (90% C.L.). This result constrains the effective Majorana neutrino mass to below 240-520 meV, depending on the matrix elements used. In our experimental configuration with the lowest background, the background is 4.0-2.5+3.1 counts/(FWHM t yr).

- Abstract
The Majorana Demonstrator will search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay (0vββ) of the 76Ge isotope with a mixed array of enriched and natural germanium detectors. The observation of this rare decay would indicate the neutrino is its own anti-particle, demonstrate that lepton number is not conserved, and provide information on the absolute mass-scale of the neutrino. The Demonstrator is being assembled at the 4850 foot level of the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota. The array will be contained in a low-background environment and surrounded by passive and active shielding. The goals for the Demonstrator are: demonstrating a background rate less than 3 t-1 y-1 in the 4 keV region of interest (ROI) surrounding the 2039 keV 76Ge endpoint energy; establishing the technology required to build a tonne-scale germanium based double-beta decay experiment; testing the recent claim of observation of 0vββ [1]; and performing a direct search for light WIMPs (3-10 GeV/c2).

- Abstract
We have made a precise measurement of the absolute branching fractions of Bs0?Ds(*)+Ds(*)- decays using 121.4 fb-1 of data recorded by the Belle experiment running at the ?(5S) resonance. The results are B(Bs0?Ds+Ds-)=(0.58-0.09+0.110.13)%, B(Bs0?Ds*Ds?)=(1.76-0.22+0.230.40)%, and B(Bs0?Ds*+Ds*-)=(1.98-0.31-0.50+0.33+0.52)%; the sum is B(Bs0?Ds(*)+Ds(*)-)=(4.32-0.39-1.03+0.42+1.04)%. Assuming Bs0?Ds(*)+Ds(*)- saturates decays to CP-even final states, the branching fraction constrains the ratio ??s/ cos12, where ??s is the difference in widths between the two Bs-B?s mass eigenstates, and 12 is the CP-violating phase in Bs-B ?s mixing. We also measure for the first time the longitudinal polarization fraction of Bs0?Ds*+Ds*-; the result is 0.06-0.17+0.180.03. 2013 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
We report a measurement of the inclusive semileptonic Bs0 branching fraction in a 121 fb-1 data sample collected near the ?(5S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy e +e- collider. Events containing Bs0(*) B?s0(*) pairs are selected by reconstructing a tag side Ds+ and identifying a signal side lepton ?+ (?=e, ?) that is required to have the same-sign charge to ensure that both originate from different Bs0 mesons. The Bs0?X -?+?? branching fraction is extracted from the ratio of the measured yields of Ds+ mesons and Ds+?+ pairs and the known production and branching fractions. The inclusive semileptonic branching fraction is measured to be [10.60.5(stat)0.7(syst)]%. 2013 American Physical Society.

We measure the branching fraction of B-?? -??? using the full ?(4S) data sample containing 772106 BB? pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Events with BB? pairs are tagged by reconstructing one of the B mesons decaying into hadronic final states, and B-?? -??? candidates are detected in the recoil. We find evidence for B-?? -??? with a significance of 3.0 standard deviations including systematic errors and measure a branching fraction B(B -??-???)=[0.72-0.25+0. 27(stat)0.11(syst)]10-4. 2013 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
We report a search for the rare decays B?h(*) ???, where h(z.ast;) stands for K+, KS0, K*+, K*0, ?+, ?0, ?+, ?0 and p. The results are obtained from a 711 fb-1 data sample that contains 772106BB? pairs collected at the ?(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. We search for signal candidates by fully reconstructing a hadronic decay of the accompanying B meson and requiring a single h(*) meson left on the signal side. No significant signal is observed and we set upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level. The measurements of B+?K *+???, B+?? +???, B0??0??? and B0??0? ?? provide the world's currently most restrictive limits. 2013 American Physical Society.

We report the results of a high-statistics search for H dibaryon production in inclusive ?(1S) and ?(2S) decays. No indication of an H dibaryon with a mass near the MH=2m? threshold is seen in either the H??p?- or ?? decay channels and 90% confidence level branching-fraction upper limits are set that are between one and two orders of magnitude below the measured branching fractions for inclusive ?(1S) and ?(2S) decays to antideuterons. Since ?(1S,2S) decays produce flavor-SU(3)-symmetric final states, these results put stringent constraints on H dibaryon properties. The results are based on analyses of 102 million ?(1S) and 158 million ?(2S) events collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider. 2013 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
The cross section for e+e-??J/? between ?s=3.8 GeV and 5.3 GeV is measured via initial state radiation using 980 fb-1 of data on and around the ?(nS)(n=1,2,3,4,5) resonances collected with the Belle detector at KEKB. Two resonant structures at the ?(4040) and ?(4160) are observed in the ?J/? invariant mass distribution. Fitting the mass spectrum with the coherent sum of two Breit-Wigner functions, one obtains B(?(4040)??J/?) ?e+e-?(4040)=(4.80.91.5) eV and B(?(4160)??J/?)?e+e -?(4160)=(4.00.81.4) eV for one solution and B(?(4040)??J/?)?e+e -?(4040)=(11.21.32.1) eV and B(?(4160) ??J/?)?e+e-?(4160)=(13. 81.32.1) eV for the other solution, where the first errors are statistical and the second are systematic. This is the first measurement of this hadronic transition mode of these two states, and the partial widths to ?J/? are found to be about 1 MeV. There is no evidence for the Y(4260), Y(4360), ?(4415), or Y(4660) in the ?J/? final state, and upper limits of their production rates in e+e- annihilation are determined. 2013 American Physical Society.

Measurements of inclusive differential cross sections for charged pion and kaon production in e+e- annihilation have been carried out at a center-of-mass energy of ?s=10.52 GeV. The measurements were performed with the Belle detector at the KEKB e+e- collider using a data sample containing 113106 e+e -?qq? events, where q={u,d,s,c}. We present charge-integrated differential cross sections d?h/dz for h={?,K} as a function of the relative hadron energy z=2Eh/?s from 0.2 to 0.98. The combined statistical and systematic uncertainties for ? (K) are 4% (4%) at z?0.6 and 15% (24%) at z?0.9. The cross sections are the first measurements of the z dependence of pion and kaon production for z>0.7 as well as the first precision cross section measurements at a center-of-mass energy far below the Z0 resonance used by the experiments at LEP and SLC. 2013 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
The Majorana Demonstrator is an array of natural and enriched high purity germanium detectors that will search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of Germanium-76 and perform a search for weakly interacting massive particles with masses below 10 GeV. To reach the background rate goal in the neutrinoless double-beta decay region of interest of 4 counts/keV/t/y, the DEMONSTRATOR will utilize a number of background reduction strategies, including a time-correlated event cut for 68Ge that requires a sub-keV energy threshold. This low energy threshold allows the DEMONSTRATOR to extend its physics reach to include a search for light WIMPs. We will discuss the detector systems and data analysis techniques required to achieve sub-keV thresholds as well as present the projected dark matter sensitivities of the Majorana Demonstrator.

- Abstract
We report measurements of the decays B -?Ds(*)+K -? -? ?? in a data sample containing 657106BB? pairs collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e +e - collider. We observe a signal with a significance of 6? for the combined D s and Ds* modes and find the first evidence of the B -?Ds+K -? -? ?? decay with a significance of 3.4?. We measure the following branching fractions: B(B -?Ds+K -? -? ??)=(0.300.09(stat)-0.08+0.11(syst)) 10 -3 and B(B -?Ds(*)+K -? -? ??)=(0.590.12(stat) 0.15(syst))10 -3 and set an upper limit B(B -?Ds*+K -? -? ??)<, 0.5610 -3 at the 90% confidence level. We also present the first measurement of the Ds+K - invariant mass distribution in these decays, which is dominated by a prominent peak around 2.6GeV/c2. 2012 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
Using samples of 102106 ?(1S) and 158106 ?(2S) events collected with the Belle detector, we study exclusive hadronic decays of these two bottomonium resonances to the three-body final states ϕK +K -, ?? +? - and K *0(892)K -? +, and to the two-body Vector-Tensor states (ϕf2?(1525), ?f 2(1270), ?a 2(1320) and K *0(892)K?2*0(1430)) and Axial-vector-Pseudoscalar (K 1(1270) +K -, K 1(1400) +K - and b 1(1235) +? -) states. Signals are observed for the first time in the ?(1S)?ϕK +K -, ?? +? -, K *0K -? +, K *0K2*0 and ?(2S)?ϕK +K -, K *0K -? + decay modes. Branching fractions are determined for all the processes, while 90% confidence level upper limits are established on the branching fractions for the modes with a statistical significance less than 3?. The ratios of the branching fractions of ?(2S) and ?(1S) decays into the same final state are used to test a perturbative QCD prediction for OZI-suppressed bottomonium decays. 2012 American Physical Society.

- Abstract
We report measurements of branching fractions and time-dependent CP asymmetries in B0?D +D - and B0?D *D ? decays using a data sample that contains (77211)106BB? pairs collected at the ?(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e +e - collider. We determine the branching fractions to be B(B0?D +D -)=(2.120.160.18) 10 -4 and B(B0?D * D ?)=(6.140.290.50) 10 -4. We measure CP asymmetry parameters SD +D -=-1.06-0.14+0.210.08 and CD +D -=-0. 430.160.05 in B0?D +D - and AD *D=+0.060.050.02, SD *D=-0. 780.150.05, CD *D=-0.010.110.04, ?SD *D=-0.130.150.04 and ?CD *D=+0.120.110.03 in B0?D *D ?, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic.
