Abstract

Several modular, as well as theoretical studies are conducted to demonstrate the presence of nonlinear mean reversion in the different real interest rates of the countries. The ex-post real interest rates of the countries, like Canada, France and Italy are shown to follow a nonlinear model characterized by mean reversion.

7. Canadian evidence on long-run neutrality propositions

Abstract

The validity of three long-run neutrality propositions were assessed using post-World War II Canadian data. Utilization of King and Watson methodology revealed the inexistence of evidence that will support the validity of long-run Phillips curve and the long-run Fisher curve under the Canadian context. On the other hand, a powerful evidence was noted with regards to unemployment inflation relationship.

Abstract

We test the long-run neutrality of money proposition for the United States paying attention to the integration and cointegration properties of the variables. We use quarterly data (over the period from 1967:1 to 2014:1) and the new Center for Financial Stability Divisia monetary aggregates. We make a comparison among the narrower monetary aggregates, M1, M2M, MZM, M2, and ALL, and the broad monetary aggregates, M4+, M4-, and M3, and show that there is no statistically significant evidence against long-run monetary neutrality, consistent with both monetarist and Keynesian macroeconomic theory. We use Backus and Kehoe (1992) long, low-frequency data on real GNP/GDP and money for Australia, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Japan, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States to examine the long-run neutrality and super-neutrality of money propositions.
