Abstract

The 5G ESSENCE project’s context is based on the concept of Edge Cloud Computing and Small Cell-as-a-Service (SCaaS) -as both have been previously identified in the SESAME 5G-PPP project of phase 1- and further “promotes” their role and/or influences within the related 5G vertical markets. 5G ESSENCE’s core innovation is focused upon the development/provision of a highly flexible and scalable platform, offering benefits to the involved market actors. The present work identifies a variety of challenges to be fulfilled by the 5G ESSENCE, in the scope of an enhanced architectural framework. The proposed technical approach exploits the profits of the centralization of Small Cell functions as scale grows through an edge cloud environment, based on a two-tier architecture with the first distributed tier being for offering low latency services and the second centralized tier being for the provision of high processing power for computing-intensive network applications. This permits decoupling the control and user planes of the Radio Access Network (RAN) and achieving the advantages of Cloud-RAN without the enormous fronthaul latency restrictions. The use of end-to-end network slicing mechanisms allows for sharing the related infrastructure among multiple operators/vertical industries and customizing its capabilities on a per-tenant basis, creating a neutral host market and reducing operational costs.

Abstract

The emerging technologies in the field of telecommunications have evolved into the paradigm of 5G. The 5G technology suggests that communication networks can become sufficiently flexible to handle a wide variety of network services from various domains. One of the aspects envisaged by 5G is the virtualization of small cells, which allows enhanced mobile edge computing capabilities, thus enabling network service deployment and management near the end user. This paper presents a cloud-enabled small cell architecture for 5G networks developed within the 5G-ESSENCE project. The paper demonstrates a set of experiments for different platform architectures in 5G, based on a prototype Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) Virtualized Network Function (VNF).

Abstract

The combination of high capacity, signal robustness, and worldwide acceptance have made digital terrestrial broadcasting (DVB-T) one of today's more promising technologies, while newly adopted standards support the integration of digital television programs and data services within a single multiplex, offered to both stationary and mobile end users. This paper addresses the issue of optimal bit rate allocation among DTV and IP services within the DVB-T multiplex, and demonstrates a novel configuration providing real-time sharing of the available bandwidth via an algorithm based on service hierarchy and perceptual quality assessment. The architecture and performance of a fully functional DVB-T testbed developed on this concept is also presented. Index Terms--Dynamic bandwidth allocation, IP over DVB, picture quality assessment.

Services design utilizes the Software Defined Network (SDN) and Network Function Virtualisation (NFV) technologies to offer smart services. Abstract

The surge of the Internet traffic with exabytes of data flowing over operators mobile networks has created the need to rethink the paradigms behind the design of the mobile network architecture. The inadequacy of the 4G UMTS Long term Evolution (LTE) and even of its advanced version LTE-A is evident, considering that the traffic will be extremely heterogeneous in the near future and ranging from 4K resolution TV to machine-type communications. To keep up with these changes, academia, industries and EU institutions have now engaged in the quest for new 5G technology. In this paper we present the innovative system design, concepts and visions developed by the 5G PPP H2020 project SESAME (Small cEllS coordinAtion for Multi-tenancy and Edge services). The innovation of SESAME is manifold: i) combine the key 5G small cells with cloud technology, ii) promote and develop the concept of Small Cellsas- a-Service (SCaaS), iii) bring computing and storage power at the mobile network edge through the development of nonx86 ARM technology enabled micro-servers, and iv) address a large number of scenarios and use cases applying mobile edge computing. Abstract

SESAME proposes the Cloud-Enabled Small Cell (CESC) concept, a new multi-operator enabled Small Cell that integrates a virtualized execution platform for deploying Virtual Network Functions (NVFs), supporting powerful self-x management and executing novel applications and services inside the access network infrastructure. A dedicated architecture has been proposed for that purpose. In this paper, we take into account recent research challenges in order to discuss the latest innovations, as well as the updates of the corresponding architecture. Such updates include the SC-Common VNF as fun-in/fun-out module, the progress in SESAME Small Cell functional splits, and the placement of "Self-x" features and wireless backhauling.
