Carbon dioxide (CO2) has reached a higher level of emissions in the last decades, and as it is widely known, CO2 is responsible for numerous environmental problems, such as climate change. Thus, there is a great need for the application of CO2 capture and storage, as well as of CO2 utilization technologies (CCUS). This review article focuses on summarizing the current CCUS state-of-the-art methods used in Europe. Special emphasis has been given to mineralization methods/technologies, especially in basalts and sandstones, which are considered to be suitable for CO2 mineralization. Furthermore, a questionnaire survey was also carried out in order to investigate how informed about CO2 issues European citizens are, as well as whether their background is relative to their positive or negative opinion about the establishment of CCUS technologies in their countries. In addition, social acceptance by the community requires contact with citizens and stakeholders, as well as ensuring mutual trust through open communication and the opportunity to participate as early as possible in the development of actions and projects related to CO2 capture and storage, at all appropriate levels of government internationally, as citizens need to understand the benefits from such new technologies, from the local to the international level. Storage of CO 2 into geological formations, such as deep saline aquifers and depleted oil/gas reservoirs, is being investigated to help reduce releases to the atmosphere. A critical issue is the long-term efficacy of engineered (man-made) hydrated cement seals that surround or plug boreholes. In order to investigate the impact of CO 2 interactions with hydrated cement, the present study focuses on the alteration processes that were observed in a hydrated cement core (based on Type-G Portland cement) after laboratory experimental reaction with a CO 2 -saturated brine for 6 months. The carbonated cement block consisted of an orange outer zone, an alteration rim, and the intact cement core. The PHREEQC geochemical code was used to simulate the experimental conditions and data using 1D reactive transport modeling. The first phases to dissolve were portlandite, CS and ettringite providing calcium to solution. Three CaCO 3 polymorphs were predicted to precipitate, but the less stable of these (aragonite, vaterite) were transformed to calcite over time. According to simulations the final product after 1000 years of reaction will be 68% calcite, 18% Friedel's salt and 14% Al-Fe-Si hydro/oxides. As the reaction front moved within the sample, porosity decreased due to the formation of amorphous phases and carbonates. The proposed model is a useful tool in describing longer-term hydrated cement alteration behavior during CO 2 geological storage and to compare their results with in situ observations from field experiments. Abstract: The mobility of inorganic pollutants is of key concern for a range of industrial and engineering applications of fly ash produced during the combustion of lignite in power generation. This paper investigates the role that the geochemical features of lignite, the ash composition and the partitioning of elements during combustion play in determining leaching properties of lignite fired by-products. The work is based on surveys on three lignite-fired power plants in Greece. Calcium-rich ashes show a high abatement potential for SO2 and other gaseous pollutants. For most elements, the concentrations in the parent lignite and the ashes follow the same trend. Relative enrichments in Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mo, Ni, Pb, U, V, W, Zn fingerprint the regional and local geological settings of the lignite basins. The total and leachable concentrations of highly volatile elements are strongly influenced by the interaction with ubiquitous free lime. A broad array of elements is highly insoluble in alkaline ash, while a few oxyanionic-forming elements display substantial mobility. Their mode of occurrence in the parent lignite plays a primary role in the leaching of combustion ashes. The outcomes of this study may assist in addressing the impact of co-firing high ash or high Ca alternative fuels on the leaching properties of combustion by-products. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The present study investigates the heavy metal content of coal fly ash (FA) samples coming from three different sampling points (secondary cyclone, cooler and filter) of a pilot plant combustion facility. The combustion experiments were carried out in a 0.1MW Circulated Fluidized Bed (CFB) boiler using South African coal, with the addition of limestone for sulfur capture. FA was tested for the presence of selected heavy metals using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES); batch leaching tests were conducted as well. The samples were also characterized in terms of their microstructure, chemical and mineralogical composition, total surface area and particle size distribution. Most of the studied metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Mn, Zn) showed enrichment in the fine, filter FA particles, while Pb was mostly concentrated in the cooler sample. Regarding leaching characteristics of the examined samples, Cr was found to occur in considerable amounts. Although the use of CFB technology for the combustion of solid fuels steadily gets bigger worldwide, only a very limited number of studies have environmentally assessed CFB-coal FAs to date. Abstract: The purpose of the study described in this paper was to determine the removal of Cr (total), Cr (VI), Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn and Cd from wastewater using different particle-size-fractions of highly calcareous and highly siliceous fly ashes (FAs). Three different Hellenic FAs (two calcareous and one siliceous) were tested for their capability of precipitating heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Each FA sample was separated into six different size-fractions with a grain diameter range of: [(0–25) (25–40) (40–90) (90–150) (150–400) and (>400)]μm. The different FA grain-fractions were evaluated in terms of their chemical composition, pH, Loss on Ignition (LOI) and CaOf (%). Batch adsorption experiments were then carried out, indicating that the various grain-fractions of the highly siliceous FA were more efficient in precipitating Cr (VI) but less capable of retaining Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. On the other hand, the high-Ca fly ashes were proven to be more efficient in uptaking Cd, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn, but less in hexavalent chromium. This particular tendency was also confirmed in the case of the different particle-size-fractions of same fly ashes. Abstract: The Achlada and Mavropigi lignite deposits in northern Greece provide the main coal source for the next generation of Greek power plants. A comparative characterization of these two lignite deposits is presented, covering the coal rank and the features of the maceral components, based on detailed coal petrography, and the mineralogical and geochemical features of the coals and their ashes, based on XRF and XRD analyses. The data are used to interpret the palaeoenvironments of the lignite beds, as well as factors that may affect their burnout behavior. Both deposits have a lignite C rank. The Mavropigi lignite is mainly a matrix lignite lithotype, whereas the Achlada deposit consists both of matrix and xylite-rich lithotypes. The Achlada lignite was formed in a fluviatile environment, mainly in the abandoned channels of a meandering river system during flooding periods; hence it is enriched in inorganic matter, with ash values >30wt.%. The Mavropigi lignite formed in a reed-marsh environment under limno-telmatic conditions, and displays ash values <30wt.%. The inorganic matter of the two deposits is different in composition due to the contrasting environments, and these differences should be taken into account in optimizing their utilization for power production. A preliminary assessment indicates that the Achlada lignite may have more favorable slagging and fouling properties than the Mavropigi lignite, although experimental studies are required for more solid conclusions to be reached. Abstract: The mineralogy of five lignite layers and the associated roof, floor and intercalating strata has been analysed using low-temperature oxygen-plasma ashing and quantitative X-ray diffraction techniques. The lignite contains quartz, kaolinite, illite and smectite, and in some cases small proportions of feldspar, thought to represent mainly detrital minerals in the original peat deposits. One sample also contains crystalline calcium oxalates, with weddellite present in the raw lignite and whewellite in the low-temperature ash (LTA) of the same lignite sample. Minor proportions of gypsum are present in some of the raw lignite samples, possibly in part derived from precipitation of dissolved Ca and SO4 in the pore waters on drying. All the LTAs, however, contain much higher proportions of bassanite and/or gypsum compared to the other minerals present, consistent with production of calcium sulphate artefacts from interaction of abundant organically-associated Ca and S in the lignite during the plasma-ashing procedure. The inorganic strata are mainly carbonate rocks, consisting almost entirely of calcite with minor aragonite, small proportions of illite, traces of pyrite and in some cases siderite. Some non-carbonate rocks are also associated with the lignite seams; these are dominated by plagioclase feldspar and mica, along with illite, kaolinite and a relatively minor proportion of quartz. The mineral assemblages can be related to the palaeoenvironmental conditions under which the various sediments (including lignite) were deposited. Comparison of the mineral abundances in the samples to the chemical composition of the materials shows that the quantitative XRD technique provides results consistent with ash analysis data. Although abundant in the associated rocks, calcite does not occur in the lignite samples. While part of the relatively abundant Ca in the lignite occurs as either gypsum or weddellite, most of it appears to be organically-bound. Mine products that incorporate calcareous rocks of the type associated with the lignite may, however, contain separate calcite phases and display high carbonate CO2 contents. Abstract: Polish bituminous (PB) and South African (SA) coal fly ash (FA) samples, derived from pilot-scale circulated fluidized bed (CFB) combustion facilities, were utilized as raw materials for the synthesis of zeolitic products. The two FAs underwent a hydrothermal activation with 1M NaOH solution. Two different FA/NaOH solution/ratios (50, 100g/L) were applied for each sample and several zeolitic materials were formed. The experimental products were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray coupled–scanning electron microscope (EDX/SEM), while X-ray fluorescence (XRF) was applied for the determination of their chemical composition. The zeolitic products were also evaluated in terms of their cation exchange capacity (CEC), specific surface area (SSA), specific gravity (SG), particle size distribution (PSD), pH and the range of their micro- and macroporosity. Afterwards the hybrid materials were tested for their ability of adsorbing Cr, Pb, Ni, Cu, Cd and Zn from contaminated liquids. Main parameters for the precipitation of the heavy metals, as it was concluded from the experimental results, are the mineralogical composition of the initial fly ashes, as well as the type and the amount of the produced zeolite and specifically the mechanism by which the metals ions are hold on the substrate. Abstract: The chemical and mineralogical composition of fly ash samples collected from laboratory scale circulating fluidised bed (CFB) combustion facility have been investigated. Three fly ashes were collected from the second cyclone in a 50kW laboratory scale boiler, after the combustion of different solid fuels. Characterisation of the fly ash samples was conducted by means of X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Quantitative analysis of the crystalline (mineral) and amorphous phases in each ash sample was carried out using the Rietveld-based Siroquant system, with an added spike of ZnO to evaluate the amorphous content. SiO2 is the dominant oxide in the fly ashes, with CaO, Al2O3 and Fe2O3 also present in significant proportions. XRD results show that all three fly ashes contain quartz, anhydrite, hematite, illite and amorphous phases. The minerals calcite, feldspar, lime and periclase are present in ashes derived from Polish coal and/or woodchips. Ash from FBC combustion of a Greek lignite contains abundant illite, whereas illite is present only in minor proportions in the other ash samples. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: The chemical and mineralogical composition of fly ash samples collected from different parts of a laboratory and a pilot scale CFB facility has been investigated. The fabric filter and the second cyclone of the two facilities were chosen as sampling points. The fuels used were Greek lignite (from the Florina basin), Polish coal and wood chips. Characterization of the fly ash samples was conducted by means of X-ray fluorescence (XRF), inductive coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), particle size distribution (PSD) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). According to the chemical analyses the produced fly ashes are rich in CaO. Moreover, SiO2 is the dominant oxide in fly ash with Al2O3 and Fe2O3 found in considerable quantities. Results obtained by XRD showed that the major mineral phase of fly ash is quartz, while other mineral phases that are occurred are maghemite, hematite, periclase, rutile, gehlenite and anhydrite. The ICP-OES analysis showed rather low levels of trace elements, especially for As and Cr, in many of the ashes included in this study compared to coal ash from fluidised bed combustion in general. Abstract: Diatomite with variable chemical and mineralogical composition occurs in the Komnina Lignite Basin. The diatomite layers, which overly lignite seams of Upper Miocene age, are rich in silica or calcium. These layers correspond respectively to quartz-rich and calcite-rich layers. The diatomite mainly consists of opal-A, while other minerals are quartz, feldspars, calcite, smectite, illite, kaolinite, chlorite, cristobalite, and muscovite. The well-preserved nature of the diatom species indicates a weak silica diagenesis. This is also indicated by the mineralogical composition of diatomite, especially the absence of opal-CT. The organic material present in the lake acted as coating and prevented diatom dissolution. The shallow lake, where the diatoms were deposited, did not allow diagenesis of diatomite. Diatoms were deposited in the Komnina Lake as a result of the acidic pH, the warm-humid conditions, and the silica-rich environment that occurred due to volcanic activity in the nearby area (Aridea). Remains of volcanic ash have been identified in the lignite deposits of the wider Ptolemais area. The association of diatomite with lignite was brought about by tectonic movements that occurred in the wider area of Monastir–Florina–Ptolemais–Kozani–Elassona–Sarantaporo in the Upper Miocene, resulting to the development of individual small shallow lakes. The paleoenvironment changed to acidic from the previous alkaline pH, the vegetation died off, the silica produced from the volcanic activity and the calm water conditions allowed the deposition of diatoms. Abstract: In this paper the mineralogy and geochemistry of Greek and Chinese coal fly ash are examined. Annual production of fly ash in China is around 160Mt while in Greece lignite fly ash accounts around 10Mt. Even though the mineralogical and chemical composition of the fly ashes coming from these two countries differs, there are common questions on the utilization of this material. The variation of the Greek fly ash’ chemical composition, from Ca-poor to Ca-rich fly ash, has resulted to applications such as dam construction, use in cement and possibly in concrete and road construction. In West Macedonia (Greece), CO2 accounts as one of the largest contributors of greenhouse gas emissions related to the activity of the regional coal power plants located in Ptolemaida. The necessity to mitigate CO2 emissions to prevent climate change under the Paris Agreement's framework remains an ongoing and demanding challenge. It requires implementing crucial environmentally sustainable technologies to provide balanced solutions between the short-term needs for dependency on fossil fuels and the requirements to move towards the energy transition era. The challenge to utilise and store CO2 emissions will require actions aiming to contribute to a Europe-wide CCUS infrastructure. The Horizon 2020 European Project "STRATEGY CCUS "examines the potential for CO2 storage in the Mesohellenic Trough from past available data deploying the USDOE methodology. Research results show that CO2 storage capacities for the Pentalofos and Eptachori geological formations of the Mesohellenic Trough are estimated at 1.02 and 0.13 Gt, respectively, thus providing the potential for the implementation of a promising method for reducing CO2 emissions in Greece. Weather and climate are parameters vital for the development and flourish of human activities, and they crucially affect mining activities. Coal and lignite (brown coal) mining operations can be aided by appropriate weather or stopped by an extreme weather event that might have catastrophic consequences for a mining area. The same stands for closed and abandoned coal mines, as extreme weather events can have severe consequences. This work aims to obtain a comprehensive overview of the climatic conditions by documenting and reporting them in various European coal and lignite mining regions. Specifically, the chosen regions cover Europe from the north (the United Kingdom) to the south (Greece), from the east (Poland, the Czech Republic) to the west (Spain), and through Europe's center (Germany). A climate baseline is created for the chosen regions to serve as a reference for safety assessment and for evaluating future climate changes. Initially, the general climate of each region was evaluated; additionally, an extensive climate database from 1990 to 2020 was created, including the mean annual temperature and precipitation. Pleistocene alkaline basaltic lavas crop out in the region of Volos at the localities of Microthives and Porphyrio. Results from detailed petrographic study show porphyritic textures with varying porosity between 15% and 23%. Data from deep and shallow water samples were analysed and belong to the Ca-Mg-Na-HCO3-Cl and the Ca-Mg-HCO3 hydrochemical types. Irrigation wells have provided groundwater temperatures reaching up to ~30 °C. Water samples obtained from depths ranging between 170 and 250 m. The enhanced temperature of the groundwater is provided by a recent-inactive magmatic heating source. Comparable temperatures are also recorded in adjacent regions in which basalts of similar composition and age crop out. Estimations based on our findings indicate that basaltic rocks from the region of Volos have the appropriate physicochemical properties for the implementation of a financially feasible CO2 capture and storage scenario. Their silica-undersaturated alkaline composition, the abundance of Ca-bearing minerals, low alteration grade, and high porosity provide significant advantages for CO2 mineral carbonation. Preliminary calculations suggest that potential pilot projects at the Microthives and Porphyrio basaltic formations can store 64,800 and 21,600 tons of CO2, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Coal mine discharges in several European countries were investigated as part of the European Commission's MANAGER project. The emphasis of the project was identification of priority pollutants and potential remedial approaches. The main identified priority pollutants were sulphate (all countries) and iron (all countries except Greece). High concentrations of chloride (particularly in Germany and Poland) were associated with discharge of saline mine waters linked to the presence of fossil sea water; these mine waters also had high boron concentrations, in contrast to chloride-rich waters in UK that are linked to recent sea water inflow. Concentrations of trace metals vary among countries, but radium is an important contaminant in barium-rich waters with low sulphate concentrations, essentially in Poland. Concentrations of trace metals and metalloids were generally low because of their relative scarcity in coal strata and adsorption onto ferric oxides and hydroxides, but they still often exceeded the environmental quality thresholds. A probabilistic geotechnical design optimization framework for large open pit excavations is proposed in the present work. An appropriate objective function is formulated in terms of normalized cost of excavation, while the overall slope angle constitutes the decision variable. Probability of slope's failure is computed via Monte Carlo simulations. Optimization curves identifying the optimum slope's angle are developed for different risk and volume factors. For illustrative purposes, a typical example of a surface lignite mine is analyzed and results are thoroughly discussed. Source-separation of urine can provide an alternative way for wastewater treatment and nutrients recovery by adsorbents which then can be applied in the agriculture as fertilizer. In this work, natural (NZ) and Ca(OH) 2 treated zeolite (CaT-Z) were employed in batch tests for adsorption of phosphate phosphorus (P) from real fresh urine (FU). Total P removal was a simultaneous process of adsorption on NZ or CaT-Z surface and precipitation in the liquid phase as Ca-P and Mg-P containing precipitates. In the presence of CaT-Z, the contribution of adsorption on total P removal was higher than that of the liquid phase precipitation at all dilution ratios of FU with deionized water. Lower residual P concentrations in FU and more P bound on the adsorbent were observed for CaT-Z than for NZ. The sequential desorption study showed that 55.1–84.9% and 6.2–72.6% of total removed P was recovered from FU loaded CaT-Z and NZ, respectively. In less diluted FU, CaT-Z adsorbed much more P (up to 11.11 mg/g) than NZ due to the dominant contribution of inner-sphere complexation (ligand exchange). In more diluted FU, outer-sphere complexation was the major P adsorption mechanism accompanied by ligand exchange. Phosphorus removal by CaT-Z reached an equilibrium in 72–96 h. Bulk (XRD, IR-ATR) and in-situ (EPMA, SEM-EDS) analytical techniques clarified the adsorption mechanisms and confirmed the accommodation of Ca-P phases on NZ and CaT-Z. Planned decommissioning of coal-fired plants in Europe requires innovative technical and economic strategies to support coal regions on their path towards a climate-resilient future. The repurposing of open pit mines into hybrid pumped hydro power storage (HPHS) of excess energy from the electric grid, and renewable sources will contribute to the EU Green Deal, increase the economic value, stabilize the regional job market and contribute to the EU energy supply security. This study aims to present a preliminary phase of a geospatial workflow used to evaluate land suitability by implementing a multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) technique with an advanced geographic information system (GIS) in the context of an interdisciplinary feasibility study on HPHS in the Kardia lignite open pit mine (Western Macedonia, Greece). The introduced geospatial analysis is based on the utilization of the constraints and ranking criteria within the boundaries of the abandoned mine regarding specific topographic and proximity criteria. The applied criteria were selected from the literature, while for their weights, the experts' judgement was introduced by implementing the analytic hierarchy process (AHP), in the framework of the ATLANTIS research program. According to the results, seven regions were recognized as suitable, with a potential energy storage capacity from 1.09 to 5.16 GWh. Particularly, the present study's results reveal that 9.27% (212,884 m2) of the area had a very low suitability, 15.83% (363,599 m2) had a low suitability, 23.99% (550,998 m2) had a moderate suitability, 24.99% (573,813 m2) had a high suitability, and 25.92% (595,125 m2) had a very high suitability for the construction of the upper reservoir. The proposed semi-automatic geospatial workflow introduces an innovative tool that can be applied to open pit mines globally to identify the optimum design for an HPHS system depending on the existing lower reservoir. This study investigates the capability of the Southeast Mesohellenic Trough (SE MHT) sandstone formations to serve as a potential reservoir for CO2 storage in response to the emerging climate change issues by promoting environmentally friendly mineral sequestration applications. Sandstone samples, for the first time, were evaluated for their petrographic characteristics, mineral chemistry, geochemical properties, as well as their petrophysical and gas adsorption properties through tests. The sandstones were tested and classified into distinct groups. The most promising site to be considered for pilot CO2 storage testing is the Pentalofos Formation locality since its sandstones display specific mineral phases with the proper modal composition to conceivably react with injected CO2, leading to the development of newly formed and stable secondary mineral phases. The gas adsorption results are also more encouraging for sandstones from this sedimentary formation. All the measured UCS (uniaxial compressive strength), Ei (bending stiffness), and ν (Poisson's ratio) results are above those dictated by international standards to perform CO2 storage practices safely. Furthermore, the specified targeted locality from the Pentalofos Formation holds the geological advantage of being overlaid by an impermeable cap-rock formation, making it suitable for deploying CO2 mineralization practices. The demarcated area could permanently store a calculated amount of ~50 × 105 tons of CO2 within the geological reservoir by reacting with the specified mineral phases, as specified through the proposed petrographic PrP index (potential reactive phases). Fly ash from two lignite-fed power stations in Greece (Megalopolis and Meliti) has been utilized to synthesize zeolitic materials with upgraded adsorption capacity. Two different siliceous fly ash samples were subjected to hydrothermal treatment at fixed solid/liquid ratio and constant temperature. The zeolitic products have been characterized for their microstructure, chemical, and mineralogical composition by means of SEM, AAS, and XRD, respectively. The primary zeolitic crystals identified were phillipsite and thomsonite, in Megalopolis and Meliti fly ash, respectively. In light of their prospective utilization as liquid-phase sorbents, the specific surface area and porosity of materials were also determined, by means of N 2 -porosimetry. The zeolitic samples were tested for their actual heavy metal-removal capacity by water sampled from active lignite mines in Northern Greece. Artificial aquatic samples with known concentration of heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn) were also tested, showing that the synthetic zeolitic materials are good to uptake a wide variety of potential pollutants with up to 100% efficiency. The efficiency of the synthetic zeolitic materials was comparatively assessed, showing that the more intense the presence of phillipsite in the synthetic materials, the greater the uptake rates for certain groups of trace elements. In the Aegean region (Cyclades – Greece), a large part of the Island of Anafi consists of exhumed high-grade metamorphic sequences (amphibolites, serpentinites and metasediments) that have been intruded by Late Cretaceous intermediate and felsic granitoids. These correspond to I-type arc-related rocks, displaying calc-alkaline geochemical affinities. Variability in their petrographic features, mineral composition and geochemistry is assigned to differentiation processes that mostly involved plagioclase and/or K-feldspar, and to a lesser extent amphibole and biotite. Mineral chemistry and geochemical results suggest that the Anafi granitoids are highly comparable with the Late Cretaceous granitoid intrusive rocks from East Crete and Donousa island. The amphibole and zircon saturation thermometry yields relatively moderate temperature crystallization conditions (~790°C) for the intermediate granitoids and lower for the felsic granitoids (~630°C). Geobarometric calculations based upon the chemistry of magnesiohornblende, as well as the normative (Qz), (Ab) and (Or) contents clearly point to shallow intrusion conditions (~2.0–6.5 kbar), corresponding to an estimated depth of crystallization of ~12 ± 4 km. The thrust sheets that overly the Palaeogene flysch in Anafi (metasediments with serpentinized peridotites, amphibolites and metabasites), constitute a subducted and metamorphosed oceanic sequence. These metamorphic units likely represent a part of the Pindos – Cycladic Blueschist Unit domain that was subducted at an earlier pre-Campanian stage. In the hydrated mantle wedge, incorporation of shallow level granitoids within metamorphic units was likely facilitated via corner flow intrusion mechanisms. Following the intrusion, the granitoid rocks were exhumed in a syn-convergent setting, along with the metamorphic thrust sheets, by continuous underplating of more external units, thus, escaping penetrative ductile deformation. Abstract: The chemical and mineralogical composition of lignite fly ash (FA) varies as a function of the prevalent conditions in both the processes of power production and lignite mining. The differentiation of the qualitative and quantitative composition of the highly-calcareous lignite fly ash, as a function of its particle size distribution, is verified in this paper. According to the results of the conducted research, a fine-grained fraction of considerable amount presents properties that obstruct the sustainable exploitation of calcareous lignite fly ash in cement industry applications. On the other hand, the same grain fraction (because of its hydraulic properties) can be utilized in other sort of applications, based on different criteria, i.e. in road constructions. The coarse-grained fraction (which reflects a low proportion to the total fly ash output) presents the same undesired characteristics as well. Rather, the intermediate grain fraction (75–150μm) presents the highly desirable properties when fly ash is utilized as a pozzolanic additive. In addition, the mechanism of the formation of the intermediate grain fraction strongly prevents the factors that cause the variation of fly ash-quality. It is therefore the optimum part of the whole amount of lignite FA, to be utilized as additive in cement manufacturing. The outcomes of this paper will hopefully contribute towards the crucial goal of the expansion of the utilization of calcareous lignite fly ash by proposing a more effective way of using this material, basically by taking advantage of its fundamental chemical and mineralogical properties. During an in-situ operation of machines, used for the exploitation of energy raw materials, a damaging impact of the environment on the components of these machines is experienced. The action of degrading factors is mostly shown in the form of a clear synergistic effect. In particular, this effect can be seen during an exploitation of driving elements of scraper conveyors, used as one of the basic machines in the hard coal mining process. In the article, the subject–matter, connected with an operation of sprockets in scraper conveyors, is presented. Special attention is paid to a mutual reaction of the mineral abrasive and the presence of mine water. The main objective of the research work was a determination of the interactive component of the factor causing an abrasive wear–quartz abrasive connected with the associated action and the factor intensifying electrochemical corrosion–water with and without the NaCl salt content. Experimental tests were conducted in the conditions similar to the reality, with the use of a test rig in the form of a short scraper conveyor. Within the framework of the test abrasive wear rates for the case of the abrasive presence itself and a mixture of the abrasive, salt and water were determined. Based on the obtained results, it appears that there is a synergistic impact of abrasive–corrosive mixtures on the wear of the surface layer of the chain sprockets under testing, and also, the causes of the interactive component values in the function of hardness and maximum strength of the materials under investigation are presented. In many circles, brown coal continues to be viewed as a cheap source of energy, resulting in numerous investments in new opencast brown coal mines. Such a perception of brown coal energy is only possible if the external costs associated with mining and burning coal are not considered. In past studies, external cost analysis has focused on the external costs of coal burning and associated emissions. This paper focuses on the extraction phase and assesses the external costs to agriculture associated with the resulting depression cone. This paper discusses the difficulties researchers face in estimating agricultural losses resulting from the development of a depression cone due to opencast mineral extraction. In the case of brown coal, the impacts are of a geological, natural-climatic, agricultural-productive, temporal, and spatial nature and result from a multiplicity of interacting factors. Then, a methodology for counting external costs in crop production was proposed. The next section estimates the external costs of crop production arising from the operation of opencast mines in the Konin-Turek brown coal field, which is located in central Poland. The analyses conducted showed a large decrease in grain and potato yields and no effect of the depression cone on sugar beet levels. A plethora of subsidence events has been repeatedly reported in high density urban environments. The purpose of this study is to introduce specific areas around the riverbeds of the urban hidden streams in the city of Athens presenting high risk in terms of ground subsidence. The study area comprises the centre of Athens and more specifically the Municipalities of Athens, Tavros, Kallithea, Daphne, Hymettus and Ilisia where the ancient rivers of Ilissos and Eridanus naturally flow through a heavily populated city. It wasn't until the early 1960s that the two rivers were completely channelled and partly covered along their course during the urbanization process which allowed the construction of the modern boulevards, roads, recreation and open space areas as long as parking areas. The route of today's concealed rivers and streams poses a serious risk of potential ground subsidence concerning the erosion of streams' bank permeable soil formations. Following this approach, areas of influence (buffer zones) were determined on each side of the subterranean urban rivers Ilissos and Eridanus. In particular, an inventory of literature and references such as, historical maps and drawings, technical studies as well as modern topographic and geological maps, land use/land cover maps were created and collected in a geospatial database. It is worth mentioning that a main part of this study was the utilization and analysis of satellite radar data of the time period 2012–2016, in order to detect vertical displacements (mm/year) and correlate these with the above-mentioned spatial data of Athens city. Underground geological energy and CO2 storage contribute to mitigation of anthropogenic greenhouse-gas emissions and climate change effects. The present study aims to present specific underground energy and CO2 storage sites in Greece. Thermal capacity calculations from twenty-two studied aquifers (4 × 10−4–25 × 10−3 MJ) indicate that those of Mesohellenic Trough (Northwest Greece), Western Thessaloniki basin and Botsara flysch (Northwestern Greece) exhibit the best performance. Heat capacity was investigated in fourteen aquifers (throughout North and South Greece) and three abandoned mines of Central Greece. Results indicate that aquifers present higher average total heat energy values (up to ~6.05 × 106 MWh(th)), whereas abandoned mines present significantly higher average area heat energy contents (up to ~5.44 × 106 MWh(th)). Estimations indicate that the Sappes, Serres and Komotini aquifers could cover the space heating energy consumption of East Macedonia-Thrace region. Underground gas storage was investigated in eight aquifers, four gas fields and three evaporite sites. Results indicate that Prinos and South Kavala gas fields (North Greece) could cover the electricity needs of households in East Macedonia and Thrace regions. Hydrogen storage capacity of Corfu and Kefalonia islands is 53,200 MWh(e). These values could cover the electricity needs of 6770 households in the Ionian islands. Petrographical and mineralogical studies of sandstone samples from the Mesohellenic Trough and Volos basalts (Central Greece) indicate that they could serve as potential sites for CO2 storage. Abstract Carbonation of industrial wastes rich in earth-alkali oxides is found to have a significant potential for CO 2 sequestration. This process opens new perspectives not only for carbon dioxide mitigation, but also for the valorization and new applications of industrial waste materials from coal-burning power plants. In this study, mineral carbonation of high–calcium fly ash is investigated under dry and moist conditions in a continuous flow reactor during up to 2 h, at temperatures ranging from 160 to 290 °C and CO 2 pressures between 1 and 6 bar. A comprehensive characterization of treated and untreated samples was carried out before and after carbonation using X-ray diffraction, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The maximum sequestration capacity achieved was 117.7 g CO 2 /kg fly ash (48.14% carbonation efficiency) under dry conditions. Results showed that increasing the pressure and temperature enhances the process of carbonation, as well as the presence of moderate amounts of water vapor in the CO 2 gas flow. Newly formed carbonates were always present in the treated samples. This study shows that about 21% of all CO 2 emissions of a coal-burning power plant could potentially be sequestered as carbonates. Abstract The Othris region in Central Greece includes sub-oceanic crustal rocks of Middle-Late Triassic age that have undergone low to moderate degrees of metasomatic/metamorphic alteration processes. Alteration documented in these rocks includes rodingitization, serpentinization and carbonation in cumulate wehrlites, ultramafic lavas, mafic dykes and pillow-lavas. Wehrlites and ultramafic lavas are partially to completely serpentinized during ocean floor metamorphism. They were additionally affected by rodingitization, mostly expressed with formation of hydroandradites and hydrogrossulars, closely associated with the breakdown of primary phases of clinopyroxene and plagioclase. We estimate that rodingitization occurred within relatively mildly oxidizing physicochemical conditions, with an increased CO 2 /H 2 O ratio. More significant rodingitization affected mafic doleritic dykes that intrude wehrlites: this alteration occurred in parallel to serpentinization of hosting ultramafics via subsequent circulation of relatively alkaline and hydrous fluids. We have calculated that this occurred under low to moderate P-T conditions (180–320 °C, P ≈ 2–5 kbar). Circulation of Ca-rich fluids at shallower crustal levels was responsible for local carbonation phenomena, mostly affecting ultramafic and mafic pillow lavas. Various types of plutonic and volcanic rocks and their alteration products from Greece (serpentinite, magnesite and andesite), have been used for sustainable removal of Uranium (U) from the acidic drainage of Kirki mine, as well as for the pH increase of the polluted solutions. In this light, this study aims at the further understanding and improvement of the ecofriendly reuse of sterile, natural raw materials (including those remaining through industrial processing and engineering testing of aggregate rocks), for remediation of acid mine drainage. The selected rocks constitute such residues of sterile materials were used as filters in experimental continuous flow devices in the form of batch-type columns, in order to investigate acidic remediation properties with special focus on U removal. The initial pH of the wastewater was 2.90 and increased after seven (7) days of experimental application and more specifically from the fourth day onwards. Uranium removal became quantitatively significant once pH reached the value of 5.09. The volcanic rocks appeared to be more effective for U removal than the plutonic ones because of microtextural differences. However, optimum U removal was mainly achieved by serpentinite: while the raw materials rich in Mg strongly reacted and remediated the pH of the drainage water waste. Furthermore, the increase of pH values due to the presence of mineral raw materials, provided increased oxidation potential which deactivated the toxic load of metals, particularly U. Consequently, batch-type serpentinite reaction with the tailing fluid caused a drop in U concentration from an initial value of 254 ppb to the one of 8 ppb, which corresponds to 97% of removal. Andesite presented the second best reactant for experimental remediation, especially when it was mixed with magnetically separated mineral fractions. Adsorption of phosphate phosphorus (PO 4 -P) from wastewater onto eco-friendly geosorbents has gained great attention aiming at recovering an essential nutrient for crop production. Notably, the literature on PO 4 -P aqueous-phase adsorption kinetics is limited to the application of either empirical reaction-based models lacking a physical significance or over-simplified diffusion-based models frequently used outside their applicability area. In this study, equilibrium and kinetic experiments are presented under a wide range of phosphate concentrations (50–500 mg P/L) using sustainable and low-cost modified adsorbents. The kinetics of PO 4 -P adsorption from aqueous solutions onto Ca(OH) 2 -treated zeolite (CaT-Z) and bentonite (CaT-B) was analyzed by a dimensionless two-phase homogeneous surface diffusion model (TP-HSDM) assuming constant diffusivity coupled with the double selectivity isotherm equation (DSM). The TP-HSDM fit to the data at four initial P concentrations (50, 100, 200 and 300 mg/L) resulted in an average relative error of 14.6% and 17.4% from the experimental data for CaT-Z and CaT-B, respectively. The average surface diffusion coefficient (D s) ranged from 2.5 × 10-10 to 8.7 × 10-10 cm2/s for CaT-Z and from 1.6 × 10-10 to 4.78 × 10-9 cm2/s for CaT-B. The external mass transfer coefficient (k f) ranged from 2.72 × 10-4 to 8.38 × 10-4 cm/s for CaT-Z and from 5.63 × 10-4 to 2.24 × 10-3 cm/s for CaT-B. The dimensionless Biot (Bi) number exhibited values in the order of magnitude of 105 indicating that the intraparticle diffusion is the controlling mass transfer mechanism for both materials. Phosphorus (P) recovery from wastewater is of great interest especially when the loaded adsorbent can be used in the agriculture as slow-release fertilizer. The application depends on environmental concerns related to the chemical modification of the adsorbent and the release of toxic compounds from the loaded material to the soil or the water during adsorption. The present work focused on the phosphate (PO 4 -P) removal from aqueous solutions under low P concentrations (0.5–10 mg/L) by using Ca(OH) 2 -pretreated natural zeolite (CaT-Z). As activation agent, Ca(OH) 2 presents benefits in terms of pretreatment costs and environmental impact of the applied adsorbent. The pretreatment of natural zeolite (clinoptilolite) with 0.25 mol/L Ca(OH) 2 led to an increase of P removal from 1.7 to 97.6% at initial P concentration of 10 mg/L, pH 7 and 298 K. Low residual concentrations of 81–238 μg P/L were achieved at 298 K rendering CaT-Z a promising sorbent for tertiary wastewater treatment. At 200 mg P/L, the adsorption capacity was 7.57 mg P/g CaT-Z. The P removal efficiency was pH-independent suggesting a beneficial use of CaT-Z under acidic and alkaline conditions. Adsorption was found to be an endothermic and slow process reaching equilibrium after 120 h, whereas the half of the PO 4 -P was adsorbed in the first 8 h. The applied kinetic models showed that both film and intraparticle diffusion contributed to phosphate removal. Phosphate sorption decreased in the presence of the anionic surfactant SDS, Fe 2+ , HCO 3 − , acetate and citrate anion. Wood fly ash is an industrial by-product of the combustion of different wood materials and is mostly disposed of as waste on landfills. In our preliminary experiments, wood ash exhibited antibacterial activity against urban wastewater bacteria and we focused on wood fly ash as a potential substrate for wastewater disinfection. The addition of ash at a concentration of 10 g L-1 (1 %) caused an instant increase of pH in urban wastewater and landfill leachate. High pH (10.1-12.7) inactivated bacterial populations in the wastewater and the removal of faecal coliforms and intestinal enterococci after 6 h of contact was 100 % (below the detection limit; <1 CFU per mL) with the most efficient ash sample (ash from combustion of beech) both in urban wastewater and landfill leachate. Properly chosen wood fly ash, i.e. one that tends to increase the pH to the greatest extent, proved to be a very effective disinfection substrate. Earth's ecosystems are extremely valuable to humanity, playing a key role ecologically, economically, and socially. Wildfires constitute a significant threat to the environment, especially in vulnerable ecosystems, such as those that are commonly found in the Mediterranean. Due to their strong impact on the environment, they provide a crucial factor in managing ecosystems behavior, causing dramatic modifications to land surface processes dynamics leading to land degradation. The soil erosion phenomenon downgrades soil quality in ecosystems and reduces land productivity. Thus, it is imperative to implement advanced erosion prediction models to assess fire effects on soil characteristics. This study focuses on examining the wildfire case that burned 30 km2 in Malesina of Central Greece in 2014. The added value of remote sensing today, such as the high accuracy of satellite data, has contributed to visualizing the burned area concerning the severity of the event. Additional data from local weather stations were used to quantify soil loss on a seasonal basis using RUSLE modeling before and after the wildfire. Results of this study revealed that there is a remarkable variety of high soil loss values, especially in winter periods. More particularly, there was a 30% soil loss rise one year after the wildfire, while five years after the event, an almost double reduction was observed. In specific areas with high soil erosion values, infrastructure works were carried out validating the applied methodology. The approach adopted in this study underlines the significance of using remote sensing and geoinformation techniques to assess the post-fire effects of identifying vulnerable areas based on soil erosion parameters on a local scale. Eight types of A356 Al-fly ash composites were produced by pressure infiltration of high-Ca lignite fly ash. This type of ash was used for the first time in Al-composites synthesis, and particularly by liquid metal infiltration techniques. After examining mineralogy and chemistry, specific, narrow ash size fractions were used for the synthesis of composites, and properties linked to microstructure and wear strength of the materials. The effect of using ground ash particles on the microstructure and tribological performance of the composites was also investigated. It was concluded that using fine, high-Ca ash particles can improve the properties of composites, and that using ash particles in a ground form can better facilitate the production process of MMCs. Abstract: In the present paper, two Class C, lignite fly ashes (FAs) were utilized for the fabrication of Al/fly ash metal matrix composites (MMCs) using the powder metallurgy (PM) technique. Aluminum–fly ash and aluminum/silicon alloy (Al–12% Si)–fly ash mixtures, containing 5, 10 and 15wt.% of – both pozzolanic and hydraulic – FAs were prepared and compacted. The green products were tested for their thermal behavior in order for the sintering temperature to be determined. Then, they were sintered for 2 and 6h. The density of composites was decreasing with the increase of the percentage participation of fly ash particles into them. Apart from that, although FA clusters had been developing in the metal matrix, there was a significant enhancement in the hardness of MMCs when increasing FA content, which is mainly attributed to the intense calcareous nature of the reinforcement material. Volume and mass changes throughout calcination were also estimated as a function of increasing FA weight percent and it seems that CaO (%) of FAs plays a crucial role regarding the post-sintering raise in the mass and volume of composites. Microscopic studies of green and sintered compacts clearly indicated the effectiveness of the sintering process. Additionally, the composites were characterized in terms of their chemical composition and mineralogical structure. The rise of Ca–Si- and Si-mineral phases is intense, particularly for the composites with the highest percentage presence of CaO in FAs (15wt.%) and does not differentiate as a function of the sintering time. Μining waste, processing by-products and mine water discharges pose a serious threat to the environment as in many cases they contain high concentrations of toxic substances. However, they may also be valuable resources. The main target of the current review is the comparative study of the occurrence of rare earth elements (REE) in mining waste and mine water discharges produced from the exploitation of coal, bauxite, phosphate rock and other ore deposits. Coal combustion ashes, bauxite residue and phosphogypsum present high percentages of critical REEs (up to 41% of the total REE content) with ΣREY content ranging from 77 to 1957.7 ppm. The total REE concentrations in mine discharges from different coal and ore mining areas around the globe are also characterised by a high range of concentrations from 0.25 to 9.8 ppm and from 1.6 to 24.8 ppm, respectively. Acid mine discharges and their associated natural and treatment precipitates seem to be also promising sources of REE if their extraction is coupled with the simultaneous removal of toxic pollutants. The active Kos-Nisyros-Tilos volcanic field is located in the eastern sector of the Aegean Volcanic Arc resulting from the subduction of the African plate beneath the Aegean plate. The volcanic activity is developed since Middle Pleistocene and it occurs within a tectonic graben with several volcanic outcrops both onshore and offshore. Data obtained from previous offshore geophysical surveys and ROV exploration, combined with geospatial techniques have been used to construct synthetic maps of the broader submarine area. The volcanic relief is analyzed from the base of the volcanic structures offshore to their summits onshore reaching 1373 m of height and their volumes have been computed with 24.26 km3 for Nisyros Island and a total volume of 54.42 km3 for the entire volcanic area. The volcanic structures are distinguished in: (1) volcanic cones at the islands of Nisyros (older strato-volcano), Pergousa, Yali and Strongyli, (2) volcanic domes at the islands of Pachia, East Kondeliousa and Nisyros (younger Prophitis Ilias domes), (3) submarine volcanic calderas (Avyssos and Kefalos). Submarine volcanic debris avalanches have been also described south of Nisyros and undulating features at the eastern Kefalos bay. Submarine canyons and channels are developed along the Kos southern margin contrary to the Tilos margin. Ground truth campaigns with submarine vessels and ROVs have verified the previous analysis in several submarine volcanic sites. The geohazards of the area comprise: (1) seismic hazard, both due to the activation of major marginal faults and minor intra-volcanic faults, (2) volcanic hazard, related to the recent volcanic structures and long term iconic eruptions related to the deep submarine calderas, (3) tsunami hazard, related to the seismic hazard as well as to the numerous unstable submarine slopes with potential of gravity sliding. Copper slag, a by-product of the pyrometallurgical process used for obtaining copper from copper ore in Bor, Serbia, contains mainly silicon, iron, calcium, and aluminium oxides. Due to such properties, it is disposed of in landfills. Despite the favourable technical properties copper slag aggregates possess, such as low-water absorption (WA24 0.6%), low resistance to fragmentation (LA 10%), and low resistance to wear (MDE 4%), its use in the construction industry is still limited. The results of testing the technical properties of copper slag aggregates (CSAs) as a potential replacement for natural river aggregate (RA) are presented in this paper. The experiments included tests on three concrete mixtures with partial replacement of coarse natural aggregate with copper slag. The replacement of RA particle sizes of 8/16 mm and 16/31.5 mm with CSA in the amount of 20% + 50% and 50% + 50% resulted in an increase in the compressive strength of 12.4% and 10.5%, respectively. The increase of CSA content led to a decrease in water penetration resistance and salt-frost resistance of concrete, whereas the resistance to chloride ion penetration did not change significantly. Coal seam gas (CSG), also known as coalbed methane (CBM), is an important source of gas supply to the liquefied natural gas (LNG) exporting facilities in eastern Australia and to the Australian domestic market. In late 2018, Australia became the largest exporter of LNG in the world. 29% of the country's LNG nameplate capacity is in three east coast facilities that are supplied primarily by coal seam gas. Six geological basins including Bowen, Sydney, Gunnedah, Surat, Cooper and Gloucester host the majority of CSG resources in Australia. The Bowen and Surat basins contain an estimated 40Tcf of CSG whereas other basins contain relatively minor accumulations. In the Cooper Basin of South Australia, thick and laterally extensive Permian deep coal seams (>2 km) are currently underdeveloped resources. Since 2013, gas production exclusively from deep coal seams has been tested as a single add-on fracture stimulation in vertical well completions across the Cooper Basin. The rates and reserves achieved since 2013 demonstrate a robust statistical distribution (>130 hydraulic fracture stages), the mean of which, is economically viable. The geological characteristics including coal rank, thickness and hydrogeology as well as the present-day stress pattern create favourable conditions for CSG production. Detailed analyses of high-resolution borehole image log data reveal that there are major perturbations in maximum horizontal stress (SHmax) orientation, both spatially and with depth in Australian CSG basins, which is critical in hydraulic fracture stimulation and geomechanical modelling. Within a basin, significant variability in gas content and permeability may be observed with depth. The major reasons for such variabilities are coal rank, sealing capacity of overlying formations, measurement methods, thermal effects of magmatic intrusions, geological structures and stress regime. Field studies in Australia show permeability may enhance throughout depletion in CSG fields and the functional form of permeability versus reservoir pressure is exponential, consistent with observations in North American CSG fields. Determining the location of objects, for example roadheader in a hard coal mine, is a task that should be automated in the conditions of state-of-the-art mining. Current solutions do not meet the user's expectations due to the lack of the possibility of automation, maladjustment to the environment of a hard coal mine or not meeting the legal requirements. The article describes the initial stage of work on an automatic system for determining the position of machines in difficult underground conditions, including the analysis of requirements and constraints, an overview of available solutions, technologies and algorithms, as a result of which devices were selected for further tests. To determine the location, it is necessary to take distance measurements with high accuracy, despite the disturbances resulting from the working environment. Ultrasonic devices were selected and then tested under various operating conditions, including different distances between the transmitter and receiver as well as different directions and intensities of air movement that could distort the measurement results. During tests, sufficient accuracy, as well as other parameters, of the ultrasonic transducers were confirmed, allowing for distance measurements in the required range, suitable for use in the real-time locating system (RTLS) being developed. Geological carbon storage is an effective method capable of reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions at significant scales. Subsurface reservoirs with sealing caprocks can provide long-term containment for the injected fluid. Nevertheless, CO2 leakage is a major concern. The presence of abandoned wells penetrating the reservoir caprock may cause leakage flow-paths for CO2 to the overburden. Assessment of time-varying leaky wells is a need. In this paper, we propose a new semi-analytical approach based on pressure-transient analysis to model the behavior of CO2 leakage and corresponding pressure distribution within the storage site and the overburden. Current methods assume instantaneous leakage of CO2 occurring with injection, which is not realistic. In this work, we employ the superposition in time and space to solve the diffusivity equation in 2D radial flow to approximate the transient pressure in the reservoirs. Fluid and rock compressibilities are taken into consideration, which allow calculating the breakthrough time and the leakage rate of CO2 to the overburden accurately. We use numerical simulations to verify the proposed time-dependent semi-analytical solution. The results show good agreement in both pressure and leakage rates. Sensitivity analysis is then conducted to assess different CO2 leakage scenarios to the overburden. The developed semi-analytical solution provides a new simple and practical approach to assess the potential of CO2 leakage outside the storage site. This approach is an alternative to numerical methods when detailed simulations are not feasible. When using the explicit dynamic relaxation approach (DRA) to model the quasi-static rock breakage, fragmentation, and flow problems, especially the top-coal caving question, introducing numerical damping into the solution equation is inevitable for reducing the vibration frequency and impact speed of mesh nodes, which is significantly affect the fidelity of the computation results. Although the DRA has been widely adopted to simulate top-coal caving, the reasonable value and calibration method of numerical damping are still open issues. In this study, the calibration process of reasonable numerical damping for modeling top-coal caving is investigated by comparing with the experimental results, in which several geometry parameters of the drawing funnel are selected as the calibration indexes. The result shows that the most reasonable numerical damping value is 0.07 for the numerical modeling of interval top-coal caving in extra-thick coal seams. Finally, the correlation between the numerical damping and the physical top-coal drawing process is discussed. The numerical damping indirectly reflects the fragmentation in multi scale of coal mass and friction interaction between coal particles during the caving process, which reduces the vibration intensity of the top-coal caving system and dissipates the kinetic energy. Coal combustion is an anthropogenic source of mercury (Hg) emissions to the atmosphere. The strong toxicity and bioaccumulation potential have prompted attention to the control of mercury emissions. Pyrolysis has been regarded as an efficient Hg removal technology before coal combustion and other utilization processes. In this work, the Hg speciation in coal and its thermal stability were investigated by combined sequential chemical extraction and temperature programmed decomposition methods; the effect of coal rank on Hg speciation distribution and Hg release characteristics were clarified based on the weight loss of coal; the amount of Hg released; and the emission of sulfur-containing gases during coal pyrolysis. Five species of mercury were determined in this study: exchangeable Hg (F1), carbonate + sulfate + oxide bound Hg (F2), silicate + aluminosilicate bound Hg (F3), sulfide bound Hg (F4), and residual Hg (F5), which are quite distinct in different rank coals. Generally, Hg enriched in carbonates, sulfates, and oxides might migrate to sulfides with the transformation of minerals during the coalification process. The order of thermal stability of different Hg speciation in coal is F1 < F5 < F2 < F4 < F3. Meanwhile, the release of Hg is accompanied with sulfur gases during coal pyrolysis, which is heavily dependent on the coal rank. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mineral reactive surface area (RSA) is one of the key factors that control mineral reactions, as it describes how much mineral is accessible and can participate in reactions. This work aims to evaluate the impact of mineral RSA on numerical simulations for CO2 storage at depleted oil fields. The Farnsworth Unit (FWU) in northern Texas was chosen as a case study. A simplified model was used to screen representative cases from 87 RSA combinations to reduce the computational cost. Three selected cases with low, mid, and high RSA values were used for the FWU model. Results suggest that the impact of RSA values on CO2 mineral trapping is more complex than it is on individual reactions. While the low RSA case predicted negligible porosity change and an insignificant amount of CO2 mineral trapping for the FWU model, the mid and high RSA cases forecasted up to 1.19% and 5.04% of porosity reduction due to mineral reactions, and 2.46% and 9.44% of total CO2 trapped in minerals by the end of the 600-year simulation, respectively. The presence of hydrocarbons affects geochemical reactions and can lead to net CO2 mineral trapping, whereas mineral dissolution is forecasted when hydrocarbons are removed from the system. The method of increasing the efficiency of using one of the most common means of auxiliary transport in underground coal mines—suspended monorails—is presented. Increase of velocity is one of the key parameters to improve the efficiency and economical effect related with the underground auxiliary transport. On the other hand, increasing the velocity results in bigger value of force acting on the suspended monorail route and its suspensions. The most important issue during increasing the velocity is ensuring the required safety for the passengers and not overloading the infrastructure. In order to analyze how increasing velocity influences the level of loads of the route suspension and the steel arch loads, the computational model of suspended monorail was developed. The computational model included both the physical part (embedded in the program environment based on the Multi-Body System method) and the components of the monorail control system. Two independent software environments were cooperating with each other through the so-called co-simulation. This model was validated on the base of results obtained on the test stand. Then, the numerical simulations of emergency braking with different values of velocity were conducted, which was not possible with the use of physical objects. The latest technologies for climate change mitigation are carbon capture and storage (CCS). Some countries are developing CCS projects, and they are currently at different stages of deployment. Despite the signing of international agreements on climate change mitigation, Russia's efforts to develop and implement CCS technologies are quite limited. Therefore, it is vital that people are aware of the importance of carbon dioxide capture, utilization, and storage. The purpose of this article is to produce guidelines and toolkits to form a system of measures aimed at raising awareness of the Russian society on carbon dioxide capture and storage technologies. The paper discusses the key findings of several recent studies on the topic, e.g., a study focusing on the level of environmental consciousness among St. Petersburg students; a content analysis of the Russian school textbooks; a study of environmental groups in Russian social media; and an experimental study on creating eco-comics and posters as educational tools for promoting environmental awareness. The effective prediction of gas concentration and the reasonable formulation of corresponding safety measures have important significance for improving the level of coal mine safety. To improve the accuracy of gas concentration prediction and enhance the applicability of the models, this paper starts with actual coal mine production monitoring data, improves the accuracy of gas concentration prediction through multi-parameter fusion prediction, and constructs a recurrent neural network (RNN)-based multi-parameter fusion prediction of coal face gas concentration. We determined the performance evaluation index of the model's prediction method; used the grid search method to optimize the hyperparameters of the batch size; and used the number of neurons, the learning rate, the discard ratio, the network depth, and the early stopping method to prevent overfitting. The gas concentration prediction models—based on RNN and PSO-SVR and PSO-Adam-BP neural networks—were compared and analyzed experimentally with the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) as the performance evaluation index. The result show that using the grid search method to adjust the batch size, the number of neurons, the learning rate, the discard ratio, and the network depth can effectively find the optimal hyperparameter combination. The training error can be reduced to 0.0195. Therefore, Adam's optimized RNN gas concentration prediction model had higher accuracy and stability than the BP neural network and SVR. During training, the mean absolute error (MAE) could be reduced to 0.0573, and the root mean squared error (RMSE) could be reduced to 0.0167; however, the MAPE could be reduced to 0.3384% during prediction. The RNN gas concentration prediction model and parameter optimization method based on Adam optimization can effectively predict gas concentration. This method shows high accuracy in the prediction of gas concentration time series and can be used as a reference model for predicting mine gas concentration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
