Knowledge of atomic-level details of structure, chemistry, and electronic states is paramount for a comprehensive understanding of emergent properties at oxide interfaces. We utilise a novel methodology based on atomic-scale electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) to spatially map the electronic states tied to the formation of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at the prototypical non-polar/polar $TiO_2$/$LaAlO_3$ interface. Combined with differential phase contrast analysis we directly visualise the microscopic locations of ions and charge and find that 2DEG states and $Ti^{3+}$ defect states exhibit different spatial distributions. Supported by density functional theory (DFT) and inelastic scattering simulations we examine the role of oxygen vacancies in 2DEG formation. Our work presents a general pathway to directly image emergent phenomena at interfaces using this unique combination of arising microscopy techniques with machine learning assisted data analysis procedures., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures

We theoretically investigate the tomographic reconstruction of the three-dimensional photonic environment of nanoparticles. As input for our reconstruction we use electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) maps for different rotation angles. We perform the tomographic reconstruction of surface polariton fields for smooth and rough nanorods, and compare the reconstructed and simulated photonic local density of states, which are shown to be in very good agreement. Using these results, we critically examine the potential of our tomography scheme, and discuss limitations and directions for future developments., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Nanogranular material systems are promising for a variety of applications in research and development. Their physical properties are often determined by grain sizes, shapes, mutual distances and by the chemistry of the embedding matrix With focused electron beam induced deposition arbitrarily shaped nanocomposite materials can be designed, where metallic, nanogranular structures are embedded in a carbonaceous matrix. Using "post-growth" electron beam curing, these materials can be tuned for improved electric transport or mechanical behavior. Such an optimization necessitates a thorough understanding and characterization of the internal changes in chemistry and morphology, which is where conventional projection based imaging techniques fall short. Here, we apply scanning transmission electron tomography to get a comprehensive picture of the distribution and morphology degree of embedded Pt nanograins after initial fabrication, and we demonstrate the impact of electron beam curing, which leads to condensed regions of interconnected metal nanograins.

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) is a powerful tool for imaging chemical variations at the nanoscale. Here, we investigate a polymer/organic small molecule-blend used as absorber layer in an organic solar cell and employ EELS for distinguishing polymer donor and small molecule acceptor domains in the nanostructured blend based on elemental maps of light elements, such as nitrogen, sulfur or fluorine. Especially for beam sensitive samples, the electron dose needs to be limited, therefore optimized acquisition and data processing strategies are required. We compare data acquired on a post-column energy filter with a direct electron detection camera to data from a conventional CCD camera on the same filter and we investigate the impact of statistical data processing methods (principal components analysis, PCA) on acquired spectra and elemental maps extracted from spectrum images. Our work shows, that the quality of spectra on a direct electron detection camera is far superior to conventional CCD imaging, and thereby allows clear identification of ionization edges and the fine structure of these edges. For the quality of the elemental maps, the application of PCA is essential to allow a clear separation between the donor and acceptor phase in the bulk heterojunction absorber layer of a non-fullerene organic solar cell.

While phonons and their related properties have been studied comprehensively in bulk materials, a thorough understanding of surface phonons for nanoscale objects remains elusive. Infra-red imaging methods with photons or electrons exist, which can map these vibrational excitations down to the individual atom scale. However, no technique so far was able to directly reveal the complete three-dimensional vectorial picture of the phononic electromagnetic density of states from a nanostructured object. Using a highly monochromated electron beam in a scanning transmission electron microscope, we could visualize varying phonon signatures from nanoscale MgO cubes both as a function of the beam position, energy-loss and tilt angle. The vibrational responses were described in terms of well-defined eigenmodes and were used to tomographically reconstruct the phononic surface fields of the object, disclosing effects invisible by conventional mapping. Surface phonon applications rely critically on the way the electromagnetic field is spatially and vectorially shaped, strongly influencing the optical, thermal and electronic behavior of the materials. Such 3D information therefore promises novel insights in nanoscale physical phenomena and is invaluable to the design and optimization of nanostructures for fascinating new uses.

Memristors based on a double barrier design have been analysed by various nano spectroscopic methods to unveil details about its microstructure and conduction mechanism. The device consists of an AlOx tunnel barrier and a NbOy/Au Schottky barrier sandwiched between Nb bottom electrode and Au top electrode. As it was anticipated that the local chemical composition of the tunnel barrier, i.e. oxidation state of the metals as well as concentration and distribution of oxygen ions, have a major influence on electronic conduction, these factors were carefully analysed. A combined approach was chosen in order to reliably investigate electronic states of Nb and O by electron energy-loss spectroscopy as well as map elements whose transition edges exhibit a different energy range by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy like Au and Al. The results conclusively demonstrate significant oxidation of the bottom electrode as well as a small oxygen vacancy concentration in the Al oxide tunnel barrier. Possible scenarios to explain this unexpected additional oxide layer are discussed and kinetic Monte Carlo simulations were applied in order to identify its influence on conduction mechanisms in the device. In light of the strong deviations between observed and originally sought layout, this study highlights the robustness in terms of structural deviations of the double barrier memristor device.
