As the permafrost region warms and permafrost soils thaw, vast stores of soil organic carbon (C) become vulnerable to enhanced microbial decomposition and lateral transport into aquatic ecosystems as dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The mobilization of permafrost soil C can drastically alter the net northern permafrost C budget. DOC entering aquatic ecosystems becomes biologically available for degradation as well as other types of aquatic processing. However, it currently remains unclear which landscape characteristics are most relevant to consider in terms of predicting DOC concentrations entering aquatic systems from permafrost regions. Here, we conducted a systematic review of 111 studies relating to, or including, concentrations of DOC in terrestrial permafrost ecosystems in the northern circumpolar region published between 2000 and 2022. We present a new permafrost DOC dataset consisting of 2845 DOC concentrations, collected from the top 3 m in permafrost soils across the northern circumpolar region. Concentrations of DOC ranged from 0.1 to 500 mg L−1 (median = 41 mg L−1) across all permafrost zones, ecoregions, soil types, and thermal horizons. Across the permafrost zones, the highest median DOC concentrations were in the sporadic permafrost zone (101 mg L−1), while lower concentrations were found in the discontinuous (60 mg L−1) and continuous (59 mg L−1) permafrost zones. However, median DOC concentrations varied in these zones across ecosystem type, with the highest median DOC concentrations in each ecosystem type of 66 and 63 mg L−1 found in coastal tundra and permafrost bog ecosystems, respectively. Coastal tundra (130 mg L−1), permafrost bogs (78 mg L−1), and permafrost wetlands (57 mg L−1) had the highest median DOC concentrations in the permafrost lens, representing a potentially long-term store of DOC. Earth's lakes at northern latitudes are mostly ice-covered in winter. When lake water freezes, some organic matter dissolved in the water is excluded from the ice. We performed complementary field sampling and laboratory freeze-up experiments to explore how freeze-up may impact the partitioning and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in boreal lakes. We found that 16.2 ± 4.7% of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was retained in the overlying ice, 81.3 ± 5.7% of DOC was expelled to underlying unfrozen water, and 1.3 ± 0.7% was expelled as flocs. During ice formation, nitrogen (TDN, total dissolved nitrogen), ions (specific conductance), and oxidized and aromatic DOM were preferentially expelled to the underlying water column. The apparent retention factor DOCIce: DOCBefore decreased from clearwater to brownwater lakes, that is, with increasing allochthonous DOC lost from lake ice, indicating that DOM exclusion from the ice cover will become more prevalent as lakes experience browning.

Fluorescence is an easily available analytical technique used to assess the optical characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Despite widespread use, there has been some confusion about how robust fluorescence spectroscopy is to differences in solution pH. Here we assess fluorescence characteristics of three natural water samples and one commercially available standard (Nordic Reservoir) by modifying the pH across a range from 3.5 to 9.0 at 0.5 pH increments. We used two statistical approaches to assess if fluorescence intensity shifted significantly across this pH range. We identified that humic-like and protein-like fluorescence was largely stable within the pH range of 5.5 to 7.5, which represents 80% of Swedish lakes and streams. Likewise, we found that the three commonly used fluorescence indices were robust across the full pH range tested with the exception of the humification index, which had a narrower range of stability. The commerical humic substance sample was highly unstable with changes to pH in the regions of protein-like fluorescence being particularly sensitive. One of our conclusions is that differences in fluorescence intensity in the pH range of 5.5 to 7.5, typical for most inland waters, are generally minor. We recommend adjusting the pH when samples fall outside this region and to be especially careful in interpreting results from commercial humic substances

Here, we present a novel approach for investigating dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition using thermal desorption proton-transfer-reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS), a technique that provides insight into the molecular composition of DOM < m/z 500 (termed "PTR-DOC"). The applicability of PTR-MS for understanding the relationship between DOM composition and reactivity has yet to be explored. We present results from a synoptic sampling campaign of streams and lakes in a Swedish forest catchment where we measured DOM composition using PTR-MS and traditional optical methods and conducted DOM biodegradability assays. PTR-DOC comprised ≤12% of the total DOC pool. We found significant relationships between PTR-DOC and DOM degradability; reduced chemodiversity and low concentrations of PTR-DOC were both associated with the total DOM pool being more susceptible to microbial degradation. Furthermore, molecular differences were apparent among headwater lakes, headwater streams, and lakes further down the catchment. Direct linkages between PTR-DOC and optical methods were observed. Using the quantitative data that PTR-MS generates, it could become possible to identify the fluorescing components of DOM, and the method may be particularly informative in low-DOC waters such as marine environments where PTR-DOC may dominate the total DOM pool.

Mercury (Hg), and in particular its methylated form (methylmercury, MeHg), is a hazardous substance with the potential to produce significant adverse neurological and other health effects. Enhanced anthropogenic emissions and long-range transport of atmospheric Hg have increased Hg concentrations above background levels in aquatic systems. In this context, the Minamata Convention, a global legally binding agreement that seeks to prevent human exposure to Hg, was signed and enforced by 128 countries, and today more than 90 Parties have ratified it. All these Parties have committed to develop Hg monitoring programs to report the effectiveness of the convention. For this purpose, we provide a standardized cleaning and water sampling protocol for the determination of total-Hg and MeHg in freshwaters at ambient levels. As Hg and organic matter are tightly bound, the protocol also describes sample collection for dissolved organic carbon (DOC) concentration and characterization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) composition by fluorescence spectroscopy. This protocol is highly useful to non-experts without a prior background in Hg sampling and analysis, and can serve as a useful basis for national monitoring programs. Furthermore, this protocol should help increase quantitative inventories of DOC, inorganic-Hg (IHg) and MeHg concentrations and DOM composition in freshwater, which are severely lacking at a global scale. • Provides a standardized method to collect water samples for IHg, MeHg, DOC and DOM composition from freshwater ecosystems. © 2018 The Authors

The transport of dissolved organic carbon from land to ocean is a large dynamic component of the global carbon cycle. Inland waters are hotspots for organic matter turnover, via both biological and photochemical processes, and mediate carbon transfer between land, oceans and atmosphere. However, predicting dissolved organic carbon reactivity remains problematic. Here we present in situ dissolved organic carbon budget data from 82 predominantly European and North American water bodies with varying nutrient concentrations and water residence times ranging from one week to 700 years. We find that trophic status strongly regulates whether water bodies act as net dissolved organic carbon sources or sinks, and that rates of both dissolved organic carbon production and consumption can be predicted from water residence time. Our results suggest a dominant role of rapid light-driven removal in water bodies with a short water residence time, whereas in water bodies with longer residence times, slower biotic production and consumption processes are dominant and counterbalance one another. Eutrophication caused lakes to transition from sinks to sources of dissolved organic carbon. We conclude that rates and locations of dissolved organic carbon processing and associated CO2 emissions in inland waters may be misrepresented in global carbon budgets if temporal and spatial reactivity gradients are not accounted for.

The loss of organic carbon during passage through the continuum of inland waters from soils to the sea is a critical component of the global carbon cycle(1-3). Yet, the amount of organic carbon mineralized and released to the atmosphere during its transport remains an open question(2,4-6), hampered by the absence of a common predictor of organic carbon decay rates(1,7). Here we analyse a compilation of existing field and laboratory measurements of organic carbon decay rates and water residence times across a wide range of aquatic ecosystems and climates. We find a negative relationship between the rate of organic carbon decay and water retention time across systems, entailing a decrease in organic carbon reactivity along the continuum of inland waters. We find that the half-life of organic carbon is short in inland waters (2.5 +/- 4.7 yr) compared to terrestrial soils and marine ecosystems, highlighting that freshwaters are hotspots of organic carbon degradation. Finally, we evaluate the response of organic carbon decay rates to projected changes in runoff(8). We calculate that regions projected to become drier or wetter as the global climate warms will experience changes in organic carbon decay rates of up to about 10%, which illustrates the influence of hydrological variability on the inland waters carbon cycle.
