The main aim of this paper is to introduce a solution for network analysis based on pgRouting to resolve the bicycle accessibility of forested green spaces. The proposed application uses open-source software tools such as PostgreSQL with PostGIS extension. The solution includes a complete description of how to perform network analysis using a spatial database with SQL and pgRouting. The implemented functionalities consist of solutions for finding the equidistance or isochrone area for any selected point location. The method is tested on case study data drawn from a total of 9,500 km of roads suitable for cyclists in the Poznań Metropolitan Area, located in western Poland. The results of the analysis were isochrones determining the bicycle accessibility of forested areas. The accessibility analysis was performed considering an urbanised residential area. As a result of the analysis, locations with the best and limited access to forested green areas were identified. Moreover, the described methodology is ready to be used to solve various accessibility problems.

Electrochemical interfaces are central to the function and performance of energy storage devices. Thus, the development of new methods to characterize these interfaces, in conjunction with electrochemical performance, is essential for bridging the existing knowledge gaps and accelerating the development of energy storage technologies. Of particular need is the ability to characterize surfaces or interfaces in a non-destructive way with adequate resolution to discern individual structural and chemical building blocks. To this end, sub-diffraction-limit low-energy infrared optical probes that exploit near-field interactions within atomic force microscopy platforms, such as pseudoheterodyne nanoimaging, photothermal nanoimaging and nanospectroscopy, and nanoscale Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, are all powerful emerging techniques. These are capable of non-destructive surface probing and imaging at nanometer resolution. This review outlines recent efforts to characterize ex situ,in situ,andoperando electrode materials and electrochemical interfaces in rechargeable batteries with these advanced infrared near-field probes.

The main aim of the study was to introduce a spatial database application for the estimation of changes in shoreline position. The open-source PostgreSQL database system with the PostGIS spatial extension was used as the data store for digitalised shorelines. The solution to calculations of the shoreline changes was based on the functions written in the PL/SQL language and geospatial functions provided by the PostGIS extension. The traditional baseline and transects method was used to quantify the distances and rate of shoreline movement. Outputs of the calculations were stored in the database table and simply visualised using graphical functions in the R software environment or in GIS Desktop software. The advantage of presented method is the application of SQL language in the analysis of the relation between the geometry of shorelines stored in the database table, which, compared to other similar solutions, gives the user fully open, simple analytical code and enable selecting custom parameters of analysis, modifying code and performing additional calculations.

Lithium fluoride (LiF) is a ubiquitous component in the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer in Li-ion batteries. However, its nanoscale structure, morphology, and topology, important factors for understanding LiF and SEI film functionality, including electrode passivity, are often unknown due to limitations in spatial resolution of common characterization techniques. Ultrabroadband near-field synchrotron infrared nanospectroscopy (SINS) enables such detection and mapping of LiF in SEI layers in the far-infrared region down to ca. 322 cm-1 with a nanoscale spatial resolution of ca. 20 nm. The surface sensitivity of SINS and the large infrared absorption cross section of LiF, which can support local surface phonons under certain circumstances, enabled characterization of model LiF samples of varying structure, thickness, surface roughness, and degree of crystallinity, as confirmed by atomic force microscopy, attenuated total reflectance FTIR, SINS, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high-angle annular dark-field, and scanning transmission electron microscopy. Enabled by this approach, LiF within SEI films formed on Cu, Si, and metallic glass Si40Al50Fe10 electrodes was detected and characterized. The nanoscale morphologies and topologies of LiF in these SEI layers were evaluated to gain insights into LiF nucleation, growth, and the resulting nuances in the electrode surface passivity.

C-H bond activation enables the facile synthesis of new chemicals. While C-H activation in short-chain alkanes has been widely investigated, it remains largely unexplored for long-chain organic molecules. Here, we report light-driven C-H activation in complex organic materials mediated by 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) and the resultant solid-state synthesis of luminescent carbon dots in a spatially-resolved fashion. We unravel the efficient H adsorption and a lowered energy barrier of C-C coupling mediated by 2D TMDCs to promote C-H activation. Our results shed light on 2D materials for C-H activation in organic compounds for applications in organic chemistry, environmental remediation, and photonic materials.

Electrochemical oxidative coupling of methane (E-OCM) with Sr2Fe1·5Mo0·5O6−δ (SFM) catalyst is demonstrated with metal-supported solid oxide cells (MS-SOC). SFM anode and Pr6O11 cathode catalysts are loaded into a porous symmetric-architecture cell by infiltration and firing. The most effective chelating agent (citric acid/ethyl glycol) and optimal firing/reducing temperatures (850 °C/750 °C) for the SFM catalyst precursor solution are selected and confirmed by cell testing. Operating temperature, cell voltage, and oxygen concentration at the cathode greatly affect the methane conversion rate and product selectivity by controlling the oxygen ion flow. CH4 conversion of 85.8% is obtained, with C2H4, C2H6, and H2 concentrations of 10.5%, 12.3%, and 25.6% at 800 °C, respectively, in the product exhaust gas. Reasonable stability of the current density and methane conversion is demonstrated during 200 h operation. This research demonstrates technical progress in catalyst and device development for the E-OCM reaction to synthesize valuable chemicals.

This study aims to develop high-capacity hard carbon anode materials for alkali-ion batteries by controlling the microstructures of non-graphitic hard carbon through an annealing protocol and investigating the effects on the alkali-ion storage mechanisms using physical, chemical, and electrochemical analytical techniques. The hard carbon materials were synthesized at temperatures ranging from 900 °C to 1600 °C. Those synthesized at 1100 °C with high surface area and abundant defects exhibited the highest reversible capacity in Li- and K-ion systems, with the storage dominated by surface-adsorption mechanisms. In contrast, the hard carbon compounds prepared at 1400 °C with numerous curve-featured pores delivered the highest reversible capacity in the Na-ion system, indicating that these pores are the preferred Na-ion storage sites, particularly in low-voltage plateau regions. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between microstructures and alkali-ion storage mechanisms in non-graphitic hard carbon and highlights the importance of tailoring the microstructures of hard carbon to achieve high specific capacity for the desired alkali-ion species.

The solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on a Si negative electrode in carbonate-based organic electrolytes shows intrinsically poor passivating behavior, giving rise to unsatisfactory calendar life of Li-ion batteries. Moreover, mechanical strains induced in the SEI due to large volume changes of Si during charge-discharge cycling could contribute to its mechanical instability and poor passivating behavior. This study elucidates the influence that static mechanical deformation of the SEI has on the rate of unwanted parasitic reactions at the Si/electrolyte interface as a function of electrode potential. The experimental approach involves the utilization of Si thin-film electrodes on substrates with disparate elastic moduli, which either permit or suppress the SEI deformation in response to Si volume changes upon charging-discharging. We find that static mechanical stretching and deformation of the SEI results in an increased parasitic electrolyte reduction current on Si. Furthermore, attenuated total reflection and near-field Fourier-transform infrared nanospectroscopy reveal that the static mechanical stretching and deformation of the SEI fosters a selective transport of linear carbonate solvent through, and nanoconfinement within, the SEI. These, in turn, promote selective solvent reduction and continuous electrolyte decomposition on Si electrodes, reducing the calendar life of Si anode-based Li-ion batteries. Finally, possible correlations between the structure and chemical composition of the SEI layer and its mechanical and chemical resilience under prolonged mechanical deformation are discussed in detail.

Demand for lithium for batteries and other green technologies is exploding. The industry must develop sustainable methods to remove and process the element from ores and brines to avoid environmental damage. [Figure not available: see fulltext.]

Si anodes for Li-ion batteries are notorious for their large volume expansion during lithiation and the corresponding detrimental effects on cycle life. However, calendar life is the primary roadblock for widespread adoption. During calendar life aging, the main origin of impedance increase and capacity fade is attributed to the instability of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). In this work, we use ex situ nano-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy to characterize the structure and composition of the SEI layer on amorphous Si thin films after an accelerated calendar aging protocol. The characterization of the SEI on non-washed and washed electrodes shows that brief washing in dimethyl carbonate results in large changes to the film chemistry and topography. Detailed examination of the non-washed electrodes during the first lithiation and after an accelerated calendar aging protocol reveals that PF6- and its decomposition products tend to accumulate in the SEI due to the preferential transport of PF6- ions through polyethylene oxide-like species in the organic part of the SEI layer. This work demonstrates the importance of evaluating the SEI layer in its intrinsic, undisturbed form and new strategies to improve the passivation of the SEI layer are proposed.

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) consisting of a 4 V class layered oxide cathode active material (CAM), an inorganic solid-state electrolyte (SE), and a lithium metal anode are considered the future of energy storage technologies. To date, aside from the known dendrite issues at the anode, cathode instabilities due to oxidative degradation of the SE and reactivities between the SE and CAM as well as loss of mechanical integrity are considered to be the most significant barriers in ASSB development. In the present study, we address these challenges by developing composite cathode structures featuring two key design elements: (1) a halide SE with high oxidative stability to enable direct use of an uncoated 4 V class CAM and (2) a single-crystal (SC) CAM to eliminate intergranular cracking associated with volume changes and mechanical instability. We demonstrate exceptional performance achieved on such ASSB cells incorporating an uncoated SC-LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NMC811) CAM, a Li3YCl6 (LYC) SE, and a Li-In alloy anode, delivering a high discharge capacity of 170 mAh/g at C/5 and an impressive capacity retention of nearly 90% after 1000 cycles. Through comparative studies on polycrystalline and single-crystal NMC811 composite cathodes, we reveal the working mechanism that enables such stable cycling in the latter cell design. The study highlights the importance of proper cathode composite design and provides key insights in the future development of better-performing ASSB cells.

Although the two active redox centers in Li-rich cathodes, including the anionic and cationic contributions, can enable Li-ion batteries to achieve outstanding specific energy, their behaviors at different current densities have not been clarified. Here, we provide a comparative study of transition metals (TMs) and oxygen redox activities by directly accessing their oxidation states in Li-rich materials operated at very different current rates. Our data reveal that the oxidation of oxygen in the near-surface region is at the same level for electrodes cycled with a wide range of current rates, indicating a reaction gradient of lattice oxygen redox reactions. The oxidation process of lattice oxygen is found to be dynamically compatible with that of the TMs. Combining the results of first principles calculations and complementary experimental findings, we propose a detailed mechanism of structural distortion from octahedral Li to tetrahedral Li and the role of oxygen vacancy in Li+ diffusion. It is found that fast delithiation occurring at high current densities can easily cause local structural transformation, leading to a limited Li+ diffusion rate and consequently suppressing rate capability.

Silicon-based anodes are widely expected to vastly improve the performance of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). However, the silicon anode interface is well-known to be unstable and reactive, leading to various electrolyte side reactions that would ultimately lower the battery performance. Consequently, it is critically important to rationally design the silicon anode to stabilize its interface. The Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) technique is a well-established, versatile, and powerful method for fabricating ultrathin films over solid substrates. Here, we utilize LB approach to generate thin films composed of small organic molecules over silicon electrodes as protective layers. Such molecular layers were found capable of mediating the electrochemical behavior of silicon electrodes in both aqueous and organic carbonate electrolytes. This study illustrates the applicability of small-molecule LB films in electrode interface engineering for LIB technology development.

In this contribution, we combined electrochemical cycling and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) to understand the nonpassivating behavior of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on Si anodes during the first cycles. Based on galvanostatic measurements, we show that the irreversible capacity loss is reduced after the first cycle, and it stays almost constant from the second cycle onwards. XPS was used to determine the root causes of the Coulombic inefficiency, showing that the rate of decomposition of the organic solvents strongly decreased after the first cycle, whereas the rate of salt decomposition is almost unchanged between cycles. We determine that the inhibition of the decomposition reaction of the organic solvent is responsible for the lower Coulombic loss during the second electrochemical cycle in comparison to the first, whereas the nonpassivating behavior toward the salt decomposition is one of the main causes of capacity loss upon cycling. We further revisit the role of cracking in contributing to capacity loss. Whereas high volumetric expansion remains an issue plaguing the performance of Si anodes, our chronoamperometry studies reveal that the SEI formed on Si anodes does not passivate even when the electrode is fully expanded, and no additional surface is exposed. Overall, our work establishes the need to address the chemical and electrochemical instability of the SEI on the Si anode in addition to the more notorious issue of cracking.

The capacity of lithium transition-metal (TM) oxide cathodes is directly linked to the magnitude and accessibility of the redox reservoir associated with TM cations and/or oxygen anions, which traditionally decreases with cycling as a result of chemical, structural, or mechanical fatigue. Here, it is shown that a capacity increase over 125% can be achieved upon cycling of high-energy Mn- and F-rich cation-disordered rocksalt oxyfluoride cathodes. This study reveals that in Li1.2Mn0.7Nb0.1O1.8F0.2, repeated Li extraction/reinsertion utilizing Mn3+/Mn4+ redox along with some degree of O-redox participation leads to local structural rearrangements and formation of domains with off-stoichiometry spinel-like features. The effective integration of these local “structure-domains” within the cubic disordered rocksalt framework promotes better Li diffusion and improves material utilization, consequently increased capacity upon cycling. This study provides important new insights into materials design strategies to further exploit the rich compositional and structural space of Mn chemistry for developing sustainable, high-energy cathode materials.

The filtration membranes utilized in advanced treatment of municipal wastewater are prone to biological fouling. Permeability loss and water recovery limitations due to fouling necessitate additional pretreatment and membrane cleaning, which raise the cost of water reuse. Better fouling mitigation calls for a deeper understanding of biofilm behavior on water reuse membranes. This study uses confocal microscopy to monitor biofouling under realistic conditions. To simulate water reuse, a miniature flow cell with microfiltration and ultrafiltration membranes was operated under typical filtration conditions using secondary effluent from California's East Bay Municipal Utility District. The growing biofilms were stained for extracellular polymeric substances and live and dead cells, and they were monitored in situ under filtration conditions with a confocal laser scanning microscope to produce 2-D and 3-D images. In situ image series revealed biofilm growth and removal processes including internal and external fouling, extracellular polymeric substance production, wrinkling, delamination, and film re-deposition. Additionally, changes in biofilm morphology between in situ and ex situ images highlighted limitations of ex situ imaging. These results provide insight into the physical and biological mechanisms of biofouling in hopes of informing the development of improved techniques for biofouling mitigation.

Solid-state batteries possess the potential to significantly impact energy storage industries by enabling diverse benefits, such as increased safety and energy density. However, challenges persist with physicochemical properties and processes at electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Thus, there is great need to characterize such interfaces in situ, and unveil scientific understanding that catalyzes engineering solutions. To address this, we conduct multiscale in situ microscopies (optical, atomic force, and infrared near-field) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopies (near-field nanospectroscopy and attenuated total reflection) of intact and electrochemically operational graphene/solid polymer electrolyte interfaces. We find nanoscale structural and chemical heterogeneities intrinsic to the solid polymer electrolyte initiate a cascade of additional interfacial nanoscale heterogeneities during Li plating and stripping; including Li-ion conductivity, electrolyte decomposition, and interphase formation. Moreover, our methodology to nondestructively characterize buried interfaces and interphases in their native environment with nanoscale resolution is readily adaptable to a number of other electrochemical systems and battery chemistries.

Despite the continuous increase in capacity, lithium-ion intercalation batteries are approaching their performance limits. As a result, research is intensifying on next-generation battery technologies. The use of a lithium metal anode promises the highest theoretical energy density and enables use of lithium-free or novel high-energy cathodes. However, the lithium metal anode suffers from poor morphological stability and Coulombic efficiency during cycling, especially in liquid electrolytes. In contrast to solid electrolytes, liquid electrolytes have the advantage of high ionic conductivity and good wetting of the anode, despite the lithium metal volume change during cycling. Rapid capacity fade due to inhomogeneous deposition and dissolution of lithium is the main hindrance to the successful utilization of the lithium metal anode in combination with liquid electrolytes. In this perspective, we discuss how experimental and theoretical insights can provide possible pathways for reversible cycling of two-dimensional lithium metal. Therefore, we discuss improvements in the understanding of lithium metal nucleation, deposition, and stripping on the nanoscale. As the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) plays a key role in the lithium morphology, we discuss how the proper SEI design might allow stable cycling. We highlight recent advances in conventional and (localized) highly concentrated electrolytes in view of their respective SEIs. We also discuss artificial interphases and three-dimensional host frameworks, which show prospects of mitigating morphological instabilities and suppressing large shape change on the electrode level.

Alloying anodes such as silicon are of great interest for lithium-ion batteries due to their high lithium-ion storage capacities, but have only seen minimal commercial deployment due to their limited calendar life. This has been attributed to an intrinsically unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) that is aggravated by mechanical failure. An amorphous structure can mitigate lithiation strains, and amorphous alloys, or metallic glasses, often exhibit exceptional fracture toughness. Additional elements can be added to metallic glasses to improve passivation. Splat quenching was utilized to prepare an amorphous Al64Si25Mn11 Li-ion anode with a specific capacity >900 mAh g-1 that remains amorphous upon cycling. On this metallic glass electrode, parasitic electrolyte reduction is found to be much reduced in comparison to pure Si or Al, and comparable to that on Cu. The SEI is much thinner, more stable, and richer in fluorinated inorganic phases than the SEI formed on Si, while organic carbonate compounds such as lithium ethylene decarbonate (LiEDC) are notably absent. This study indicates that metallic glasses can become a viable new class of Li-ion anode materials with improved surface passivity.

The lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery is one of the most promising substitutes for current energy storage systems because of its low cost, high theoretical capacity, and high energy density. However, the high solubility of intermediate products (i.e., lithium polysulfides) and the resultant shuttle effect lead to rapidly fading capacity and a low coulombic efficiency, which hinder the practical application of Li-S batteries. In this study, block copolymers are constructed with both an ethylene oxide unit and a styrene unit and then used as binders for Li-S batteries. Electrochemical performance improvements are attributed to the synergistic effects contributed by the different units of the block copolymer. The ethylene oxide unit traps polysulfide, which bonds strongly with the intermediate lithium polysulfide, and enhances the transport of lithium ions to reach high capacity. Meanwhile, the styrene unit maintains cathode integrity by improving the mechanical properties and elasticity of the constructed block copolymer to accommodate the large volume changes. By enabling multiple functions via different units in the polymer chain, high sulfur utilization is achieved, polysulfide diffusion is confined, and the shuttle effect is suppressed during the cycle life of Li-S batteries, as revealed by operando ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy and S K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy.

The expectation to progress towards Terawatts production by solar technologies requires continuous development of new materials to improve efficiency and lower the cost of devices beyond what is currently available at industrial level. At the same time, the turnaround time to make the investment worthwhile is progressively shrinking. Whereas traditional absorbers have developed in a timeframe spanning decades, there is an expectation that emerging materials will be converted into industrially relevant reality in a much shorter timeframe. Thus, it becomes necessary to develop new approaches and techniques that could accelerate decision-making steps on whether further research on a material is worth pursuing or not. In this review, we will provide an overview of the photoemission characterization methods and theoretical approaches that have been developed in the past decades to accelerate the transfer of emerging solar absorbers into efficient devices.

The cycling performance of nickel-rich lithium nickel cobalt manganese oxide (NMC) electrodes in Li-ion batteries (LIBs) partially depends on the control of the kinetics of degradation processes that result in impedance rise. The impedance contribution from surface film formation at the NMC/electrolyte interfaces is highly dependent on the initial chemical composition and the structure of the NMC surfaces. Through comparison of film quantity and electrochemical performance of composite electrodes made of pristine- and surface treated-NMC materials, we are able to demonstrate that a simple surface treatment suppressed the subsequent film formation and reduced impedance rise of the Li/NMC half-cells during cycling. Detailed modelling of factors affecting cell impedance provide further insights to index individual interphase resistance, highlighting the underlying positive effects of the proposed surface treatment, and demonstrating the importance of homogeneous, electronically conducting matrices throughout the composite electrode.

Carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction at a plasmonically active silver cathode was investigated by varying the pressure and temperature at multiple applied potentials under both dark and illuminated conditions to understand the mechanism of selectivity changes driven by plasmon-enhanced electrochemical conversion. CO2 partial pressures (PCO2) from 0.2 to 1 atm were studied during linear sweep voltammetry and chronoamperometry at −0.7, −0.9, and −1.1 VRHE. At a given applied overpotential the total current density increased with increasing PCO2 in both the dark and the light, but there were significant differences in the Tafel behavior between dark and illuminated conditions. The reduction of CO2 to carbon monoxide (CO) was found to have first-order behavior with respect to PCO2 at all applied potentials in both the dark and the light, likely indicating no change in the rate-determining step upon illumination. Activity for the hydrogen (H2) evolution reaction decreased with increasing PCO2 at slightly different rates in the dark and the light at each applied potential, making it unclear if light is influencing CO or H2 intermediate adsorbate coverage. Both formate and methanol production showed no dependence on PCO2 under any conditions, but the true reaction orders may be masked by the much higher activity for CO and H2 at the silver cathode. The investigation of product distribution with temperature at 14, 22, and 32∘C at −0.7, −0.9, and −1.1 VRHE in both the dark and the light demonstrated that the selectivity changes observed upon illumination are not caused by local heating of the cathode surface.

Growing global water demand has brought desalination technologies to the forefront for freshwater production from nontraditional water sources. Among these, forward osmosis (FO) is a promising two-step desalination process (draw dilution and regeneration), but it is often overlooked due to the energy requirements associated with draw regeneration. To address this limiting factor, we demonstrate FO desalination using thermally responsive ionic liquids (ILs) that are regenerated using a renewable energy input, that is, solar heat. To efficiently harness sunlight, a simple photonic heater converts incoming irradiation into infrared wavelengths that are directly absorbed by IL-water mixtures, thereby inducing phase separation to yield clean water. This approach is markedly different as it uses radiative heating, a noncontact mode of heat transfer that couples to chemical functional groups within the IL for rapid energy transfer without a heat exchanger or secondary fluid. Overall, a solar-thermal separation efficiency of 50% is achieved under unconcentrated sunlight, which can be increased to 69% with the thermal design. Successful desalination of produced water from oil wells in Southern California highlights the potential of solar-powered IL-FO for energy-efficient and low-cost desalination of complex brines for beneficial water reuse.

This work focuses on the mechanisms of interfacial processes at the surface of amorphous silicon thin-film electrodes in organic carbonate electrolytes to unveil the origins of the inherent nonpassivating behavior of silicon anodes in Li-ion batteries. Attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray absorption spectroscopy, and infrared near-field scanning optical microscopy were used to investigate the formation, evolution, and chemical composition of the surface layer formed on Si upon cycling. We found that the chemical composition and thickness of the solid/electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer continuously change during the charging/discharging cycles. This SEI layer "breathing" effect is directly related to the formation of lithium ethylene dicarbonate (LiEDC) and LiPF6 salt decomposition products during silicon lithiation and their subsequent disappearance upon delithiation. The detected appearance and disappearance of LiEDC and LiPF6 decomposition compounds in the SEI layer are directly linked with the observed interfacial instability and poor passivating behavior of the silicon anode.

Electrochemically deposited copper nanostructures were coated with silver to create a plasmonically active cathode for carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction. Illumination with 365 nm light, close to the peak plasmon resonance of silver, selectively enhanced 5 of the 14 typically observed copper CO2 reduction products while simultaneously suppressing hydrogen evolution. At low overpotentials, carbon monoxide was promoted in the light and at high overpotentials ethylene, methane, formate, and allyl alcohol were enhanced upon illumination; generally C1 products and C2/C3 products containing a double carbon bond were selectively promoted under illumination. Temperature-dependent product analysis in the dark showed that local heating is not the cause of these selectivity changes. While the exact plasmonic mechanism is still unknown, these results demonstrate the potential for enhancing CO2 reduction selectivity at copper electrodes using plasmonics.

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries with high energy density that can be safely charged and discharged at high rates are desirable for electrified transportation and other applications1-3. However, the sub-optimal intercalation potentials of current anodes result in a trade-off between energy density, power and safety. Here we report that disordered rock salt4,5 Li3+xV2O5 can be used as a fast-charging anode that can reversibly cycle two lithium ions at an average voltage of about 0.6 volts versus a Li/Li+ reference electrode. The increased potential compared to graphite6,7 reduces the likelihood of lithium metal plating if proper charging controls are used, alleviating a major safety concern (short-circuiting related to Li dendrite growth). In addition, a lithium-ion battery with a disordered rock salt Li3V2O5 anode yields a cell voltage much higher than does a battery using a commercial fast-charging lithium titanate anode or other intercalation anode candidates (Li3VO4 and LiV0.5Ti0.5S2)8,9. Further, disordered rock salt Li3V2O5 can perform over 1,000 charge-discharge cycles with negligible capacity decay and exhibits exceptional rate capability, delivering over 40 per cent of its capacity in 20 seconds. We attribute the low voltage and high rate capability of disordered rock salt Li3V2O5 to a redistributive lithium intercalation mechanism with low energy barriers revealed via ab initio calculations. This low-potential, high-rate intercalation reaction can be used to identify other metal oxide anodes for fast-charging, long-life lithium-ion batteries.

Owing to the negative impact of the extensive utilization of batteries on the environment, sustainability of the cells needs to be included in the systemic research of batteries. Herein, a dissolvable ionic crosslinked polymer (DICP) is exploited as a binder for lithium–sulfur batteries by crosslinking the polyacrylic acid and polyethyleneimine through carboxy-amino ionic interaction. This interaction is pH-controlled, and therefore, the crosslinked binder network can be readily dissociated under basic conditions, providing a facile strategy enabling valuable components recycled through a convenient washing method. The sulfur cathode prepared using the recycled carbon–sulfur composite can deliver comparable capacity as that of fresh electrode. In addition, evidence from cell performance and characterizations, such as in situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy, in situ UV–visible spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculation, confirms that DICP is a more effective binder than its commercial counterpart on suppressing polysulfide dissolution in the electrolyte. Exploiting reversible crosslinked polymer binder for recyclable Li–S batteries with ameliorated electrochemical performance, this study illuminates sustainable development for large-scale energy storage systems.

Calcium fluoride formed by the reaction between ammonium bifluoride and calcium chloride was investigated as a dominating matrix for quantitative analysis by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Transformation from a solid sample to the calcium fluoride-based matrix permitted quantitative analysis based on calibration standards made from elemental standards. A low abundance stable calcium isotope, i.e. 44Ca+, was monitored as the internal standard for quantitative analysis by LA-ICP-MS. Correlation coefficient factors for multiple elements were obtained with values over 0.999. The results for multiple elements in a certified reference material of soil (NIST SRM 2710a) agreed with the certified values in the range of expanded uncertainty, indicating the present method was valid for quantitation of elements in solid samples.

Herein, we present a scalable approach for the synthesis of a hydrogen-bonded organic-inorganic framework via coordination-driven supramolecular chemistry, for efficient remediation of trace heavy metal ions from water. In particular, using copper as our model ion of interest and inspired by nature's use of histidine residues within the active sites of various copper binding proteins, we design a framework featuring pendant imidazole rings and copper-chelating salicylaldoxime, known as zinc imidazole salicylaldoxime supramolecule. This material is water-stable and exhibits unprecedented adsorption kinetics, up to 50 times faster than state-of-the-art materials for selective copper ion capture from water. Furthermore, selective copper removal is achieved using this material in a pH range that was proven ineffective with previously reported metal-organic frameworks. Molecular dynamics simulations show that this supramolecule can reversibly breathe water through lattice expansion and contraction, and that water is initially transported into the lattice through hopping between hydrogen-bond sites.

Conversion-type transition-metal phosphide anode materials with high theoretical capacity usually suffer from low-rate capability and severe capacity decay, which are mainly caused by their inferior electronic conductivities and large volumetric variations together with the poor reversibility of discharge product (Li3P), impeding their practical applications. Herein, guided by density functional theory calculations, these obstacles are simultaneously mitigated by confining amorphous FeP nanoparticles into ultrathin 3D interconnected P-doped porous carbon nanosheets (denoted as FeP@CNs) via a facile approach, forming an intriguing 3D flake-CNs-like configuration. As an anode for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), the resulting FeP@CNs electrode not only reaches a high reversible capacity (837 mA h g-1 after 300 cycles at 0.2 A g-1) and an exceptional rate capability (403 mA h g-1 at 16 A g-1) but also exhibits extraordinary durability (2500 cycles, 563 mA h g-1 at 4 A g-1, 98% capacity retention). By combining DFT calculations, in situ transmission electron microscopy, and a suite of ex situ microscopic and spectroscopic techniques, we show that the superior performances of FeP@CNs anode originate from its prominent structural and compositional merits, which render fast electron/ion-transport kinetics and abundant active sites (amorphous FeP nanoparticles and structural defects in P-doped CNs) for charge storage, promote the reversibility of conversion reactions, and buffer the volume variations while preventing pulverization/aggregation of FeP during cycling, thus enabling a high rate and highly durable lithium storage. Furthermore, a full cell composed of the prelithiated FeP@CNs anode and commercial LiFePO4 cathode exhibits impressive rate performance while maintaining superior cycling stability. This work fundamentally and experimentally presents a facile and effective structural engineering strategy for markedly improving the performance of conversion-type anodes for advanced LIBs.

Illumination of a voltage-biased plasmonic Ag cathode during CO2 reduction results in a suppression of the H2 evolution reaction while enhancing CO2 reduction. This effect has been shown to be photonic rather than thermal, but the exact plasmonic mechanism is unknown. Here, we conduct an in situ ATR-SEIRAS (attenuated total reflectance-surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy) study of a sputtered thin film Ag cathode on a Ge ATR crystal in CO2-saturated 0.1 M KHCO3 over a range of potentials under both dark and illuminated (365 nm, 125 mW cm-2) conditions to elucidate the nature of this plasmonic enhancement. We find that the onset potential of CO2 reduction to adsorbed CO on the Ag surface is -0.25 VRHE and is identical in the light and the dark. As the production of gaseous CO is detected in the light near this onset potential but is not observed in the dark until -0.5 VRHE, we conclude that the light must be assisting the desorption of CO from the surface. Furthermore, the HCO3- wavenumber and peak area increase immediately upon illumination, precluding a thermal effect. We propose that the enhanced local electric field that results from the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) is strengthening the HCO3- bond, further increasing the local pH. This would account for the decrease in H2 formation and increase the CO2 reduction products in the light.

In this perspective we compare plasmon-enhanced electrochemical conversion (PEEC) with photoelectrochemistry (PEC). PEEC is the oxidation or reduction of a reactant at the illuminated surface of a plasmonic metal (or other conductive material) while a potential bias is applied. PEC uses solar light to generate photoexcited electron-hole pairs to drive an electrochemical reaction at a biased or unbiased semiconductor photoelectrode. The mechanism of photoexcitation of charge carriers is different between PEEC and PEC. Here we explore how this difference affects the response of PEEC and PEC systems to changes in light, temperature, and surface morphology of the photoelectrode.

A lithium-metal composite is proposed, which includes a carbon-nitrogen modified stainless steel mesh (CNSSM) favoring homogeneous lithium-metal nucleation and growth of fresh and dense lithium deposits when employed as anode for lithium-metal batteries. This novel approach is able to overcome the usual drawbacks linked to the preexisting passivation layer at the surface of lithium. Instead, a favorable interphase with low resistivity is formed with the electrolyte, and the CNSSM modified lithium-metal composite (CNSSM-Li) results in low-voltage hysteresis (±24 mV) and allows stable and dendrite-free lithium electrodeposition. The performance of lithium-metal batteries demonstrates the outstanding capabilities of the novel CNSSM-Li electrode in promoting cell energy density and cycling stability. In addition, advanced X-ray nano-tomography is employed to characterize the composition and morphology changes of this electrode upon plating.

Silica can take many forms, and its interaction with water can change dramatically at the interface. Silica based systems offer a rich tapestry to probe the confinement of water as size and volume can be controlled by various templating strategies and synthetic procedures. To this end, microporous silica nanoparticles have been developed by a reverse microemulsion method utilizing zinc nanoclusters encapsulated in hydroxyl-terminated polyamidoamine (PAMAM-OH) dendrimers as a soft template. These nanoparticles were made tunable within the outer diameter range of 20-50 nm with a core mesopore of 2-15 nm. Synthesized nanoparticles were used to study the effects of surface area and microporous volumes on the vibrational spectroscopy of water. These spectra reveal contributions from bulk interfacial/interparticle water, ice-like surface water, liquid-like water, and hydrated silica surfaces suggesting that microporous silica nanoparticles allow a way to probe silica water interactions at the molecular scale.

Silicon anodes have a high theoretical capacity for lithium storage, but current composite electrode formulations are not sufficiently stable under long-term electrochemical cycling. The choice of polymeric binder has been shown to impact stability and capacity of silicon anodes for electrochemical energy storage. While several promising polymeric binders have been identified, there is a knowledge gap in how various physicochemical properties-including adhesion, mechanical integrity, and ion diffusion-impact electrochemical stability and performance. In this work, we comprehensively investigate the physical properties and performance of a molecular-weight series (3-20 × 106 g/mol) of partially hydrolyzed polyacrylamide (HPAM) in silicon anodes. We quantify the mechanical strength, electrolyte uptake, adhesion to silicon, copper, and carbon, as well as electrochemical performance and stability and find that HPAM satisfies many of the properties generally believed to be favorable, including good adhesion, high strength, and electrochemical stability. HPAM does not show any electrolyte uptake regardless of any molecular weight studied, and thin films of mid- and high-molecular-weight HPAM on silicon surfaces suppress lithiation of silicon. The resulting composite electrodes exhibit an electrochemical storage capacity greater than 3000 mAh/g initially and 1639 mAh/g after 100 cycles. We attribute capacity fade to failure of mechanical properties of the binder or an excess of the solid electrolyte interphase layer being formed at the Si surface. While the highest-molecular-weight sample was expected to perform the best given its stronger adhesion and bulk mechanical properties, we found that HPAM of moderate molecular weight performed the best. We attribute this to a trade-off in mechanical strength and uniformity of the resulting electrode. This work demonstrates promising performance of a low-cost polymer as a binder for Si anodes and provides insight into the physical and chemical properties that influence binder performance.

Fluorescent species are formed during cycling of lithium ion batteries as a result of electrolyte decomposition due to the instability of the non-aqueous electrolytes and side reactions that occur at the electrode surface. The increase in the background fluorescence due to the presence of these components makes it harder to analyse data due to the spectroscopic overlap of Raman scattering and fluorescence. Herein, Kerr gated Raman spectroscopy was shown to be an effective technique for the isolation of the scattering effect from the fluorescence enabling the collection of the Raman spectra of LiPF6 salt and LiPF6-based organic carbonate electrolyte, without the interference of the fluorescence component. Kerr gated Raman was able to identify POF3 on the LiPF6 particle surface, after the addition of trace water.

We present a new methodology that enables studies of the molecular structure of graphene-liquid interfaces with nanoscale spatial resolution. It is based on Fourier transform infrared nanospectroscopy (nano-FTIR), where the infrared (IR) field is plasmonically enhanced near the tip apex of an atomic force microscope (AFM). The graphene seals a liquid electrolyte reservoir while acting also as a working electrode. The photon transparency of graphene enables IR spectroscopy studies of its interface with liquids, including water, propylene carbonate, and aqueous ammonium sulfate electrolyte solutions. We illustrate the method by comparing IR spectra obtained by nano-FTIR and attenuated total reflection (which has a detection depth of a few microns) demonstrating that the nano-FTIR method makes it possible to determine changes in speciation and ion concentration in the electric double and diffuse layers as a function of bias.

In this work, we show that the well-known lithium-ion anode material, Li4Ti5O12, exhibits exceptionally high initial capacity of 310 mAh g-1 when it is discharged to 0.01 V. It maintains a reversible capacity of 230 mAh g-1, far exceeding the "theoretical" capacity of 175 mAh g-1 when this anode is lithiated to the composition Li7Ti5O12. Neutron diffraction analyses identify that additional Li reversibly enters into the Li7Ti5O12 to form Li8Ti5O12. density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal the average potentials of the Li4Ti5O12 to Li7Ti5O12 step and the Li7Ti5O12 to Li8Ti5O12 step are 1.57 and 0.19 V, respectively, which are in excellent agreement with experimental results. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) studies confirm that the irreversible capacity of Li4Ti5O12 during its first cycle originates from the formation of a solid electrolyte interface (SEI) layer. This work clarifies the fundamental lithiation mechanism of the Li4Ti5O12, when lithiated to 0.01 V vs Li.

Catalysts for electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction in aqueous electrolytes suffer from high energy input requirements, competition with hydrogen evolution from water reduction, and low product selectivity. Theory suggests that plasmonic catalysts can be tuned to selectively lower the energy barrier for a specific reaction in a set of competitive reactions, but there has been little experimental evidence demonstrating plasmon-driven selectivity in complicated multielectron electrochemical processes. Here, the photoactivity at a plasmonically active silver thin film electrode at small cathodic potentials selectively generates carbon monoxide while simultaneously suppressing hydrogen production. At larger cathodic potentials, the photoactivity promotes production of methanol and formate. Methanol production is observed only under illumination, not in dark conditions. The preference of the plasmonic activity for carbon dioxide reduction over hydrogen evolution and the ability to tune plasmonic activity with voltage demonstrates that plasmonics provide a promising approach to promote complex electrochemical reactions over other competing reactions.
