Abstract

Additive manufacturing technologies are positioned to provide an unprecedented innovative transformation in how products are designed and manufactured. Due to differences in the technical specifications of AM technologies, the final fabricated parts can vary significantly from the original CAD models, therefore raising issues regarding accuracy, surface finish, robustness, mechanical properties, functional and geometrical constraints. Various researchers have studied the correlation between AM technologies and design rules. In this work we propose a novel approach to assessing the capability of a 3D model to be printed successfully (a.k.a printability) on a specific AM machine. This is utilized by taking into consideration the model mesh complexity and certain part characteristics. A printability score is derived for a model in reference to a specific 3D printing technology, expressing the probability of obtaining a robust and accurate end result for 3D printing on a specific AM machine. The printability score can be used either to determine which 3D technology is more suitable for manufacturing a specific model or as a guide to redesign the model to ensure printability. Abstract

The adoption of autonomous systems is a foreseeable necessity in the construction sector due to work hazards and labor shortages. This paper presents a semantic 3D understanding module that creates 3D models of construction sites with highlighted regions of interest for shotcrete application. The approach uses YOLOv8m-seg and SiamMask for robust semantic segmentation together with RTAB-Map and InfiniTAM for visual odometry and 3D reconstruction. Our method is the first step towards a novel, autonomous robot for shotcrete spraying and finishing. The effectiveness of our approach is shown on a mock-up construction site and provides evidence for the applicability of robotic construction

Abstract

The appearance of construction defects in buildings can arise from a variety of factors, ranging from issues during the design and construction phases to problems that develop over time with the lifecycle of a building. These defects require repairs, often in the context of a significant shortage of skilled labor. In addition, such work is often physically demanding and carried out in hazardous environments. Consequently, adopting autonomous robotic systems in the construction industry becomes essential, as they can relieve labor shortages, promote safety, and enhance the quality and efficiency of repair and maintenance tasks. Hereupon, the present study introduces an end-to-end framework towards the automation of shotcreting tasks in cases where construction or repair actions are required. The proposed system can scan a construction scene using a stereo-vision camera mounted on a robotic platform, identify regions of defects, and reconstruct a 3D model of these areas. Furthermore, it automatically calculates the required 3D volumes to be constructed to treat a detected defect. To achieve all of the above-mentioned technological tools, the developed software framework employs semantic segmentation and 3D reconstruction modules based on YOLOv8m-seg, SiamMask, InfiniTAM, and RTAB-Map, respectively. In addition, the segmented 3D regions are processed by the volumetric modeling component, which determines the amount of concrete needed to fill the defects. It generates the exact 3D model that can repair the investigated defect. Finally, the precision and effectiveness of the proposed pipeline are evaluated in actual construction site scenarios, featuring reinforcement bars as defective areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Human activity recognition (HAR) remains an essential field of research with increasing real-world applications ranging from healthcare to industrial environments. As the volume of publications in this domain continues to grow, staying abreast of the most pertinent and innovative methodologies can be challenging. This survey provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art methods employed in HAR, embracing both classical machine learning techniques and their recent advancements. We investigate a plethora of approaches that leverage diverse input modalities including, but not limited to, accelerometer data, video sequences, and audio signals. Recognizing the challenge of navigating the vast and ever-growing HAR literature, we introduce a novel methodology that employs large language models to efficiently filter and pinpoint relevant academic papers. This not only reduces manual effort but also ensures the inclusion of the most influential works. We also provide a taxonomy of the examined literature to enable scholars to have rapid and organized access when studying HAR approaches. Through this survey, we aim to inform researchers and practitioners with a holistic understanding of the current HAR landscape, its evolution, and the promising avenues for future exploration. Abstract

Aortic stenosis is a heart valve disease that comprises one of the most common valvular lesions worldwide that can obstruct blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body leading to a significant mortality rate. In the present study, a sophisticated approach concerning the inspection of patient‐specific human heart conditions is proposed utilizing advanced computational and manufacturing methodologies. The suggested method exploits Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data that are retrieved via a computerized tomography scan process, and the corresponding 3D digital model of the heart is computed. In the next phase, the design the construction of an appropriate mechanical aortic valve is conducted considering the patient anatomical characteristics, which are derived directly from the heart's 3D model. Hereupon, additive manufacturing technologies are employed to accurately feature the customizable geometry of the native aortic valve. In addition, several experimental tests are performed in order to calculate the optimal process‐related parameters; presenting that way a mechanical behavior that resembles the mechanical properties of commercial artificial heart valves. Both the physical and digital 3D models can be used by healthcare professionals to identify potential defects prior to the cardiovascular operation. Finally, a numerical simulation is developed using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling, which has emerged as an effective tool to explore the heart's hemodynamics pinpointing the efficiency of the aortic valve replacement. Abstract

One of the main therapeutic problems worldwide is the restoration of cartilaginous lesions in order to prevent osteoarthritis which can lead to heavy and high‐cost joint replacement operations with metal implants. In situations where large cartilage lesions occur, the only solution is the transplantation of autologous cells such as chondrocytes or mesenchymal cells. These transplants require the use of scaffolds that are derived from various animals or even synthetic materials, acting as carriers of the above‐mentioned cells. In the context of this study, an integrated system is introduced aiming to rapidly design and fabricate customized 3D‐printed scaffolds, which are constructed from biomaterials, providing that way a valuable solution to their production as well as eliminating the need for multiple operations. The main idea is the employment of a stereoscopic endoscope during the arthroscopy operation extracting stereoscopic images of the investigated area in order to perform a 3D reconstruction of the cartilage lesion area prior and after the surgeon's operation. The fusion of the preoperative images (magnetic resonance imaging [MRI] for organic tissue and computed tomography [CT] for synthetic phantoms) with the captured stereoscopic images allows the formulation of an appropriate 3D model of the scaffold. In addition, the physical model of the scaffold is manufactured with the aid of a sterilized 3D printer utilizing biomaterials, such as polycaprolactone (PCL), chitosan, etc. Finally, the 3D printed scaffold is impregnated with autologous cells and inserted into the cartilage lesion during the arthroscopy operation saving precious time and reducing the overall rehabilitation cost. Abstract

Mobile robots dedicated in security tasks should be capable of clearly perceiving their environment to competently navigate within cluttered areas, so as to accomplish their assigned mission. The paper in hand describes such an autonomous agent designed to deploy competently in hazardous environments equipped with a laser scanner sensor. During the robot's motion, consecutive scans are obtained to produce dense 3D maps of the area. A 3D point cloud registration technique is exploited to merge the successively created maps during the robot's motion followed by an ICP refinement step. The reconstructed 3D area is then top-down projected with great resolution, to be fed in a path planning algorithm suitable to trace obstacle-free trajectories in the explored area. The main characteristic of the path planner is that the robot's embodiment is considered for producing detailed and safe trajectories of $1$ $cm$ resolution.
