9. Distribution of the Quill Mite Bubophilus aluconis Parasitising Western Palaearctic Owls Belonging to the Genus Strix.

Abstract

Background: The paper presents the results of studies on the distribution of the parasitic quill mite species Bubophilus aluconis (Acariformes: Syringophilidae) in the feather quills of the Western Palaearctic owls of the genus Strix, that is, tawny owl S. aluco, collected in Poland and Sweden, the Ural owl S. uralensis, from Poland, Sweden, and Finland, and the great grey owl S. nebulosa, from Sweden and Finland. The two latter species are new hosts for B. aluconis. Methods: Feather samples of the tawny owl, Ural owl, and great grey owl used in this study come from Prof. Marian Cieślak's private collection, which contains feathers of Western Palearctic birds of prey and owls. Each of the 77 tawny owl, 75 Ural owl, and 55 great grey owl specimens are represented either by whole dry wings or a full complement of flight feathers (primaries (P) and secondaries (S)) and tails (rectrices (R)). Particular types of feathers were coded as follows: Ps, Ss, R, primary greater upperwing coverts (PGUppC), secondary greater upperwing coverts (SGUppC), primary greater underwing coverts (PGUndrC), secondary greater underwing coverts (SGUndrC), uppertail coverts (UppTC), and undertail coverts (UndrTC). Results: The prevalence was relatively low for all of the examined birds, that is, 12% for S. uralensis (N = 79), 2.6% for S. aluco (N = 77), and 3.6% for S. nebulosa (N = 55). In total, we examined 37,260 flight feathers and coverts. The mite B. aluconis occupied only the inner S of the tawny owl, secondary greater under and upperwing coverts of the great grey owl, and inner Ss, primary and secondary upperwing coverts, UndrTC, and coverts from the scapulars of the Ural owl. Conclusion: We hypothesise that the absence of these parasites in the examined P, S, and R suggests that these feather types might be unsuitable for the mites due to their thick quill walls, preventing successful feeding. Abstract

This study examines phenological shifts in arrival dates of common swifts (Apus apus) in Givatayim, central Israel, from 2015 to 2023. Utilizing data from closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera footage in urban nest boxes, we observed a significant advancement of 16 days in the species' arrival from 2015 to 2023. Our methodological framework involved monitoring dates of the swifts first (FAD), second, and median arrival dates, followed by statistical analyses to reveal temporal trends. We discovered a strong relationship between FAD and subsequent breeding milestones, such as egg laying, hatching, and fledging period, clarifying the potential impact of early arrivals on common swift reproductive timing. Phenology showed no relationship with temperature in early spring. Our results confirm the results of previous studies on other species, i.e. that common swifts are arriving earlier at their breeding grounds in central Israel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

11. Cub Survival in a Wild Leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) Population.

Abstract

Simple Summary: We studied the survival of young Indian leopard cubs in the Jhalana Reserve Forest, India, during their first two years of life. Using data from trail cameras collected over four years (2018–2021), we calculated survival rates with a statistical method to identify when cubs are most at risk. All adults and cubs included in this study were identified at the individual level based on the rosette patterns on their flanks and their facial markings. We found that during the first year, the survival rate of the cubs was about 74%, indicating that this period is particularly challenging for their survival. In the second year, the survival rate improved to around 83%, showing that the cubs are more likely to survive as they grow older. Overall, 61% of the cubs survived in our population to become independent after two years of parental care. These findings are important for creating effective conservation strategies to protect leopard cubs in fragmented habitats. We investigated the survival of cubs in a wild Indian leopard (Panthera pardus fusca) population in the Jhalana Reserve Forest (JRF), India. The research focuses on analyzing the survival of leopard cubs during their first two years of life. Survival functions were estimated using the Kaplan–Meier method based on data collected with trail cameras over four years from 2018 to 2021. 12. Diversity and Interactions between Picobiine Mites and Starlings.

Simple Summary: This study investigates the complex interactions between quill mites of the family Syringophilidae and starlings. We identified five species of quill mites infesting 24 species of starlings, uncovering intricate host–parasite dynamics across the Palaearctic, Afrotropical, Oriental, and Oceanian zoogeographical regions. A detailed statistical analysis of the Picobiinae–Sturnidae network revealed low connectivity but high modularity, indicating specific relationships between the mites and their starling hosts. The network structure demonstrated four distinct modules, highlighting the specialised and compartmentalised characteristics of these associations. Furthermore, the distribution of Picobia mites was found to align with the phylogeny of their starling hosts, with particular mites targeting specific starling clades. The social and breeding behaviours of starlings were observed to contribute to the high prevalence of these mites. This comprehensive network analysis provides new insights into the ecological dynamics of host–parasite interactions. The subfamily Picobiinae (Acariformes: Syringophilidae) comprises obligate and permanent parasites of birds found exclusively in the quills of contour feathers. We studied associations of picobiine mites with birds of the family Sturnidae (Aves: Passeriformes) across the Palaearctic, Afrotropical, Oriental, and Oceanian zoogeographical regions. Among the 414 examined bird individuals belonging to 44 species (35.2% of all sturnids), 103 individuals from 24 species (54.5% of examined species) were parasitised by quill mites. The diversity of mites was represented by five species, including one newly described, Picobia malayi Patan and Skoracki sp. n. Statistical analysis of the Picobiinae–Sturnidae bipartite network demonstrated a low connectance value (Con = 0.20) and high modularity, with significant differences in the H2′ specialisation index compared to null model values. The network structure, characterised by four distinct modules, highlighted the specificity and limited host range of the Picobiinae–Sturnidae associations. The distribution of Picobia species among starlings was congruent with the phylogeny of their hosts, with different mites parasitising specific clades of starlings. Additionally, the findings suggest that the social and breeding behaviours of starlings influence quite a high prevalence. Abstract

The striped hyena is one of the most secretive and enigmatic mammal species. Despite some success in describing their distribution and analyzing population trends, further understanding of the factors affecting reproductive success is needed. Therefore, we present the first analysis of the reproductive success of this species in the wild. We measured the reproductive success of female striped hyenas in at least one litter over 15 breeding seasons. We inspected 33 dens with 67 breeding events during this time and recorded 151 young hyenas. The dens were inhabited for an average of 2 years, with litter sizes ranging from 1 to 4 per reproductive female and most young born between January and June. We also found that litter size was positively associated with lowland areas and shrubs near the den. Despite methodological limitations that we could not overcome given the enigmatic nature of this species, our discovery is crucial because we have shown that reproductive success depends on the habitat in which dens are located, thus ensuring consistent reproductive success over the long‐term cycle. Abstract

Water bears (Tardigrada) are known as one of the most extremophile animals in the world. They inhabit environments from the deepest parts of the oceans up to the highest mountains. One of the most extreme and still poorly studied habitats which tardigrades inhabit are cryoconite holes. We analysed the relation between area, depth, elevation and tardigrades densities in cryoconite holes on four glaciers on Spitsbergen. The mean (±SD) of cryoconite area was 1287.21±2400.8 cm2, while the depth was on average 10.8±11.2 cm, the elevation 172.6±109.66 m a.s.l., and tardigrade density 24.9±33.0 individuals per gram of wet material (n = 38). The densities of tardigrades on Hans Glacier reached values of up to 168 ind. cm3, 104 ind. g−1 wet weight, and 275 ind. g−1 dry weight. The densities of tardigrades of the three glaciers in Billefjorden were up to 82 ind. cm2, 326 ind. g−1 wet weight and 624 ind. g−1 dry weight. Surprisingly, although the model included area, depth and elevation as independent variables, it cannot explain Tardigrada density in cryoconite holes. We propose that due to the rapid melting of the glacier surface in the Arctic, the constant flushing of cryoconite sediments, and inter-hole water-sediment mixing, the functioning of these ecosystems is disrupted. We conclude that cryoconite holes are dynamic ecosystems for microinvertebrates in the Arctic.

23. Staphylococcal species composition in the skin microbiota of domestic pigeons (Columba livia domestica).

Abstract

Staphylococci are a natural component of the skin microbiota of many organisms, including humans and birds. As opportunistic pathogens, they can cause a variety of infections in humans. The close contact between domestic pigeons and their owners provide an opportunity for exchange of skin-associated bacteria. In this study, 41 healthy racing pigeons were tested. Staphylococci were detected on the skin of each bird (41/41, 100%). Isolates were identified at the species level using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS). The diversity of the Staphylococcus species was relatively high and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) were predominantly isolated. In total, ten different staphylococcal species were identified. S. lentus (19/41, 46.3%) was noted most frequently. The pigeon skin was also inhabited by S. xylosus (6/41, 14.6%), S. equorum (4/41, 9.8%), S. hyicus (3/41, 7.3%), S. intermedius (2/41, 4.9%), S. sciuri (2/41, 4.9%), S. vitulinus (2/41, 4.9%), S. lugdunensis (1/41, 2.4%), S. hominis (1/41, 2.4%), and S. auricularis (1/41, 2.4%). Our results indicate that domestic pigeons may carry pathogens with zoonotic potential. All strains were susceptible to 12 antibiotics (ciprofloxacin, clindamycin chloramphenicol, erythromycin, fosfomycin, gentamicin, levofloxacin, norfloxacin, rifampicin, tobramycin, trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole, vancomycin) representing 8 different classes. None isolate displayed a multidrug-resistant phenotype. Resistance to tetracycline (6/41, 14.6%) and to penicillin (4/41, 9.7%) was shown. The mecA gene was not detected in the examined strains and no methicillin-resistant staphylococci were found on the skin of the healthy pigeons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

24. Laterality affects coloration in Red Sea Ghost Crabs (Ocypode saratan).

Abstract

The ability to change colors or appearance to blend into the background habitat is essential to ensure an individual's survival. This is especially challenging in a heterogeneous habitat such as the intertidal zone of a seashore, which is the primary habitat of crabs. The Red Sea Ghost Crab (RSGC) is endemic to the Red Sea, and in Israel, it is found only at one beach. We discovered that right-clawed crabs are lighter colored (i.e., yellow, sand) than left-clawed crabs (brown, purple), consistent with their daily activity. The closest to the water were the sand-colored, left-clawed crabs, while the farthest up the beach were the yellow-colored, right-clawed crabs. Moreover, we observed purple-colored, left-clawed crabs during low UV radiation, while during high UV radiation, we observed brown-colored, right-claws crabs. In explaining the observed segregation, we speculate that claw lateralization and body colors are common in the social signaling system. Symmetrically identical individuals can signal their condition to their competitors by colors. However, this part of the signaling is under the pressure of the intensity of sunlight. Abstract

The family Syringophilidae (Acari: Prostigmata) includes obligatory ectoparasites, which occupy feather quills from various parts of avian plumage, where they feed and reproduce. Our study was concerned with the global fauna of syringophilid mites associated with Psittaciformes, as well as host-parasite specificity and evolution. We assumed that the system composed of quill mites and parrots represents a model group that can be used in a broader study of the relationships between parasites and hosts. In total, we examined 1524 host individuals of parrots belonging to 195 species, 73 genera, and 4 families (which constitute ca. 50% of global parrot fauna) from all zoogeographical regions where Psittaciformes occur. Among them, 89 individuals representing 81 species have been infested by quill mites belonging to 45 species and 8 genera. The prevalence of host infestations by syringophilid mites varied from 2.8% to 100% (95% confidence interval (CI Sterne method) = 0.1–100). We applied a bipartite analysis to determine the parasite-host interaction, network indices, and host specificity at the species and whole network levels. The Syringophilidae-Psittaciformes network was composed of 24 mite species and 47 host species. The bipartite network was characterized by a high network level specialization H2′ = 0.98, connectance C = 0.89, and high modularity Q = 0.90, with 23 modules, but low nestedness N = 0.0333. Moreover, we reconstructed the phylogeny of the quill mites on the generic level, and this analysis shows two distinct clades: Psittaciphilus (Peristerophila + Terratosyringophilus) (among Syringophilinae subfamily) and Lawrencipicobia (Pipicobia + Rafapicobia) (among Picobiinae). Abstract

Peristerophila geopelis sp. nov. (Figure 2, 4 C–D) Description. FEMALE, HOMEOMORPHIC FORM (HOM), holotype. Total body length 685 (560–680 in 9 paratypes). Gnathosoma. Gnathosoma 90 (85‒95) long. Infracapitulum densely punctate. Stylophore 130 (130‒ 145) long. Each medial branch of peritremes with 2 chambers, each lateral branch with 4‒5 chambers. Idiosoma. Propodonotal shield entire, T-shaped, with punctate belt-like ornament, bases of setae ve and si situated on this shield. Length ratio of setae ve:si:se 1:1.5‒2:7.5‒11. Hysteronotal shield reduced to narrow and oval sclerite. Py-gidial shield punctate in posterior part. Length ratio of setae d2:d1: e2 1.2‒1.3:1:1. Setae f2 6‒7.8 times longer than setae f1. Setae h1 and f1 subequal in length. Coxal fields I‒IV punctate. Bases of setae 3a situated out of coxal fields III. Setae 3c 2.6‒3.1 times longer than 3b. AMU-SYR.907) from Creasted Pigeon Ocyphaps lophotes (Temminck), AUSTRALIA: Adelaide, coll. Beyer [host in the ZSM, uncatalogued]. Whole mite material is deposited in the AMU and ZSM. Differential diagnosis. Peristerophila geopelis sp. nov. is morphologically most similar to P. mucuya (Casto, 1980) described from Columbina passerina (Columbidae) from USA (Texas) (Casto 1980). In females of both species, the infracapitulum is punctate; lateral and medial branch of the peritremes has 5 and 2 chambers, respectively; and the hysteronotal shield is reduced to the single sclerite which is not fused with the pygidial shield. This new species differs from P. mucuya by the following features: in females of P. geopelis, the propodonotal shield is entire and T-shaped; bases of setae c1 are situated on the propodonotal shield. In females of P. mucuya, the propodonotal shield is divided onto three oval-shaped sclerites; bases of setae c1 are situated out of propodonotal shield. Etymology. All type specimens are deposited in the AMU. Differential diagnosis. Peristerophila leucomela sp. nov. is morphologically similar to P. claravis Glowska and Skoracki, 2008 described from Claravis pretiosa Ferrari-Pérez (Columbidae) from Bolivia (Glowska & Skoracki 2008). In females of both species, the infracapitulum is punctate, the propodonotal shield is divided onto three sclerites and the hysteronotal shield is absent. This new species differs from P. claravis by the following features: in females of P. leucomela, bases of setae ve and si are situated on the lateral propodonotal shields; the lengths of setae si, d1, and f2 are 165‒180, 140‒165, and 150‒170 respectively; and the pygidial shield is punctate. In females of P. claravis, bases of setae ve and si are situated off the lateral propodonotal shields, the lengths of setae si, d1, and f2 are 25‒35, 205‒255, and 230‒260 respectively; and the pygidial shield is apunctate. Etymology. The name leucomela is taken from the specific name of the host.
