The article investigates the interplay between religion and science using the Holy Quran as a framework. It explores the past relationship and clashes between the two, emphasizing contemporary Western intellectuals' view of them as irreconcilable. The research then focuses on Muslim intellectuals' perspectives, highlighting a broader approach grounded in Islamic theology. Using qualitative methodology, the article discusses the Islamic notion of science and the natural world, viewing the Quran as a source of wisdom that supplements scientific research. It examines Quranic passages on wisdom, showing how investigation and intelligence are essential in both spiritual and scientific endeavors in Islam. The research also addresses the concepts of Al-Khalq (creation) and Taskhir-e-Kainat (subordination of the cosmos) in the Quran, presenting scientific investigation as a way to understand God's creation. It contends that extensive knowledge, encompassing belief and logic, might resolve the clash between religion and science by examining crucial Quranic segments. The study ultimately suggests that the connection between religion and science, rather than being confrontational, can be mutually beneficial from an Islamic perspective, offering a logical structure for combining scientific investigation with spiritual understanding.

AbstractMetabolic syndromes including obesity and diabetes are the most common health issues due to insulin resistance, disturbance in glucose homeostasis, lack of exercise, and improper diet. The current study was planned to evaluate the potential effects of regular diet with fortified yogurt on blood glycemia and anthropometric responses. Plain yogurt was procured from the local market, and then it was fortified with calcium. Furthermore, the subsequent effect of fortified yogurt on blood glucose, insulin, and anthropometric measurements was assessed at different time intervals. A total of 40 healthy females and males aged about 20 years with a normal BMI range (20–24.9 kg/m2) were recruited within the Government College University Faisalabad. Participants filled out the habits Performa, stress factors questionnaire, and activity questionnaire. Blood glucose (BG) and visual analogous scale (VAS) performs were also taken in the fasting stage and then assigned treatment was given. After 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 min intervals VAS and BG estimation was carried out. The results shows that fortified yogurt contained a higher amount of calcium. Likewise, a similar trend was observed for the desire to eat, a feeling of fullness, palatability, physical comfort, and overall acceptability. The results obtained from various analyses were statistically evaluated.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused Americans to adjust to a new normal of quarantines, remote learning, and working from home. With nearly 45 million cases and 719,000 deaths since January 2020, the direct effects of the virus are more commonly known. Previous research has showed a positive correlation between societal and economic stressors and intimate partner violence. Related research has also found that rates of domestic violence increased significantly after environmental disasters. Recent articles have shown a significant increase in National Domestic Violence Hotline calls, as well as increases in selfreported intimate partner violence on surveys during the COVID-19 pandemic. Many have hypothesized that the societal and economic pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic would result in secondary effects that are less researched such as crime, interpersonal violence, and domestic violence. This study aims to investigate the incidence of violent injury encounters at the Community Regional Medical Center (CRMC) emergency department. We hypothesize there has been an increase in the rate of violent injury encounters in the emergency department during the pandemic in comparison to prior years.

The American white ibis (Eudocimus albus), a common bird species in Florida, has become increasingly urban, with many populations relying heavily on urban and suburban habitats, which may alter parasite transmission. Parasites of ibis, especially haemosporidians, are understudied. Avian haemosporidia can have a wide range of impacts on birds, including decreased reproductive success or increased mortality. Because southern Florida is subtropical and has a high diversity of potential vectors for haemosporidia, we hypothesized that there will be a high prevalence and genetic diversity of haemosporidia in white ibis. A total of 636 ibis from South Florida were sampled from 2010 to 2022, and blood samples were tested for haemosporidia by examination of Giemsa-stained thin blood smears and/or nested PCRs targeting the cytochrome b gene. A total of 400 (62.9%, 95% CI 59–66.7%) ibis were positive for parasites that were morphologically identified as Haemoproteus plataleae. Sequences of 302 positives revealed a single haplotype of Haemoproteus (EUDRUB01), which was previously reported from white ibis in South Florida and captive scarlet ibis (E. ruber) in Brazil. No Plasmodium or Leucocytozoon infections were detected. Parasitemias of the 400 positive birds were very low (average 0.084%, range 0.001%-2.16% [although only 2 birds had parasitemias >1%]). Prevalence and parasitemias were similar for males and females (68% vs. 61.6% and 0.081% vs. 0.071%, respectively). Prevalence in juveniles was lower compared with adults (52% vs. 67.4%) but parasitemias were higher in juveniles (0.117% vs. 0.065%). This data shows that H. plataleae is common in ibis in South Florida. Although parasitemias were generally low, additional research is needed to determine if this parasite has subclinical effects on ibis, if additional haplotypes or parasite species infect ibis in other regions of their range, or if H. plataleae is pathogenic for other sympatric avian species.

Proteasome degradation is an integral part of cellular growth and function. Proteasomal intervention may mitigate adverse myocardial remodeling, but is associated with the onset of heart failure. Previously, we have demonstrated that increasing abundance of cardiac Lmp2 and its incorporation into proteasome complexes is an endogenous mechanism for proteasome regulation during hypertrophic remodeling of the heart induced by chronic ß-adrenoreceptor stimulation. Here, we investigated whether Lmp2 is required for myocardial remodeling not driven by inflammation and show that Lmp2 is a tipping element for growth and function in the heart but not for proteasome insufficiency. While it has no apparent impact under unchallenged conditions, myocardial remodeling without Lmp2 exacerbates hypertrophy and restricts cardiac function. Under chronic ß-adrenoreceptor stimulation, as seen in the development of cardiovascular disease and the manifestation of heart failure, genetic ablation of Lmp2 in mice caused augmented concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricle. While the heart rate was similarly elevated as in wildtype, myocardial contractility was not maintained without Lmp2, and apparently uncoupled of the ß-adrenergic response. Normalized to the exacerbated myocardial mass, contractility was reduced by 41% of the pretreatment level, but would appear preserved at absolute level. The lack of Lmp2 interfered with elevated 26S proteasome activities during early cardiac remodeling reported previously, but did not cause bulk proteasome insufficiency, suggesting the Lmp2 containing proteasome subpopulation is required for a selected group of proteins to be degraded. In the myocardial interstitium, augmented collagen deposition suggested matrix stiffening in the absence of Lmp2. Indeed, echocardiography of left ventricular peak relaxation velocity (circumferential strain rate) was reduced in this treatment group. Overall, targeting Lmp2 in a condition mimicking chronic ß-adrenoreceptor stimulation exhibited the onset of heart failure. Anticancer therapy inhibiting proteasome activity, including Lmp2, is associated with adverse cardiac events, in particular heart failure. Sparing Lmp2 may be an avenue to reduce adverse cardiac events when chronic sympathetic nervous system activation cannot be excluded.

Abstract Observed links between parasites, such as ticks, and climate change have aroused concern for human health, wildlife population dynamics, and broader ecosystem effects. The one‐host life history of the winter tick (Dermacentor albipictus) links each annual cohort to environmental conditions during three specific time periods when they are predictably vulnerable: spring detachment from hosts, summer larval stage, and fall questing for hosts. We used mixed‐effects generalized linear models to investigate the drivers of tick loads carried by moose (Alces alces) relative to these time periods and across 750 moose, 10 years, and 16 study areas in the western United States. We tested for the effects of biotic factors (moose density, shared winter range, vegetation, migratory behavior) and weather conditions (temperature, snow, humidity) during each seasonal period when ticks are vulnerable and off‐host. We found that warm climatic regions, warm seasonal periods across multiple partitions of the annual tick life cycle, and warm years relative to long‐term averages each contributed to increased tick loads. We also found important effects of snow and other biotic factors such as host density and vegetation. Tick loads in the western United States were, on average, lower than those where tick‐related die‐offs in moose populations have occurred recently, but loads carried by some individuals may be sufficient to cause mortality. Lastly, we found interannual variation in tick loads to be most correlated with spring snowpack, suggesting this environmental component may have the highest potential to induce change in tick load dynamics in the immediate future of this region.

Cylicins are testis-specific proteins, which are exclusively expressed during spermiogenesis. In mice and humans, two Cylicins, the gonosomal X-linked Cylicin 1 (Cylc1/CYLC1) and the autosomal Cylicin 2 (Cylc2/CYLC2) genes, have been identified. Cylicins are cytoskeletal proteins with an overall positive charge due to lysine-rich repeats. While Cylicins have been localized in the acrosomal region of round spermatids, they resemble a major component of the calyx within the perinuclear theca at the posterior part of mature sperm nuclei. However, the role of Cylicins during spermiogenesis has not yet been investigated. Here, we applied CRISPR/Cas9-mediated gene editing in zygotes to establish Cylc1- and Cylc2-deficient mouse lines as a model to study the function of these proteins. Cylc1 deficiency resulted in male subfertility, whereas Cylc2-/-, Cylc1-/yCylc2+/-, and Cylc1-/yCylc2-/- males were infertile. Phenotypical characterization revealed that loss of Cylicins prevents proper calyx assembly during spermiogenesis. This results in decreased epididymal sperm counts, impaired shedding of excess cytoplasm, and severe structural malformations, ultimately resulting in impaired sperm motility. Furthermore, exome sequencing identified an infertile man with a hemizygous variant in CYLC1 and a heterozygous variant in CYLC2, displaying morphological abnormalities of the sperm including the absence of the acrosome. Thus, our study highlights the relevance and importance of Cylicins for spermiogenic remodeling and male fertility in human and mouse, and provides the basis for further studies on unraveling the complex molecular interactions between perinuclear theca proteins required during spermiogenesis.

Cancers require telomere maintenance mechanisms for unlimited replicative potential. They achieve this through TERT activation or alternative telomere lengthening associated with ATRX or DAXX loss. Here, as part of the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium, we dissect whole-genome sequencing data of over 2500 matched tumor-control samples from 36 different tumor types aggregated within the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium to characterize the genomic footprints of these mechanisms. While the telomere content of tumors with ATRX or DAXX mutations (ATRX/DAXXtrunc) is increased, tumors with TERT modifications show a moderate decrease of telomere content. One quarter of all tumor samples contain somatic integrations of telomeric sequences into non-telomeric DNA. This fraction is increased to 80% prevalence in ATRX/DAXXtrunc tumors, which carry an aberrant telomere variant repeat (TVR) distribution as another genomic marker. The latter feature includes enrichment or depletion of the previously undescribed singleton TVRs TTCGGG and TTTGGG, respectively. Our systematic analysis provides new insight into the recurrent genomic alterations associated with telomere maintenance mechanisms in cancer.

Aim: Our aim was to compare the direct enzymatic measurement with four formulas which are used in determining the value of low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. Material and methods: A total of 33842 patients’ files were retrospectively reviewed and data was collected. Triglyceride (TG) group 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were consisted of TG levels ≤99 mg/dl, 100-199 mg/dl, 200-299 mg/dl, 300-399 mg/dl and ≥ 400 mg/dl, respectively. LDL-Group 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 were composed of LDL-C≤100 mg/dl, 101-130 mg/dl, 131-160 mg/dl, 160-190 mg/dl and >190 mg/dl, respectively. Results: All formulas tended to undervalue LDL-C concentrations compared to direct method (p Conclusion: The Chen formula might be an acceptable alternative of the Friedewald formula and other formulas.

Background Social prescribing (SP) is part of universal personalised care and available to everyone in the UK National Health Service. However, emerging evidence suggests access disparities in social prescribing. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility of using primary care records to access and analyse data on social prescribing. Our secondary aim was to compare characteristics of patients who are offered referral, referred to or decline referral for social prescribing to explore possible inequalities in access to social prescribing. Methods Patient records (n=3086) were extracted from 11 GP practices across Northwest England for accepted, offered and declined social prescribing referrals. Patient demographics collected included sex, age, ethnicity, mental and physical health diagnoses. Patient characteristics in social prescribing referrals were compared to the overall practice population (practice information from Public Health England). Referral and decline rates were compared by group (e.g. male/female decline rates). Results GP referral data showed inconsistent recording of wider determinants of health. Patient age, sex and mental and physical health conditions were consistently recorded. Other variables (marital status, interpreter need, education, disability, sexual orientation, non-English language, nationality) were recorded only sporadically and could not be used for analysis. Practices varied in referral patterns.. Our preliminary findings identified under-referring of younger age groups and Asians, and higher declined referrals among individuals with physical health diagnoses. Conclusions Recording discrepancies meant that many patient factors could not be used to identify trends in social prescribing referrals and declines and assess equity. Primary care data recording must be consistent to understand SP referral trends and inequalities relating to the wider determinants of health. Preliminary results suggest some patient groups may be underrepresented in SP referrals, however this requires further investigation.

Blunt force trauma remains a serious threat to many populations and is commonly seen in motor vehicle crashes, sports, and military environments. Effective design of helmets and protective armor should consider biomechanical tolerances of organs in which they intend to protect and require accurate measurements of deformation as a primary injury metric during impact. To overcome challenges found in velocity and displacement measurements during blunt impact using an integrated accelerometer and two-dimensional (2D) high-speed video, three-dimensional (3D) digital image correlation (DIC) measurements were taken and compared to the accepted techniques. A semispherical impactor was launched at impact velocities from 14 to 20 m/s into synthetic ballistic gelatin to simulate blunt impacts observed in behind armor blunt trauma (BABT), falls, and sports impacts. Repeated measures Analysis of Variance resulted in no significant differences in maximum displacement (p = 0.10), time of maximum displacement (p = 0.21), impact velocity (p = 0.13), and rebound velocity (p = 0.21) between methods. The 3D-DIC measurements demonstrated equal or improved percent difference and low root-mean-square deviation compared to the accepted measurement techniques. Therefore, 3D-DIC may be utilized in BABT and other blunt impact applications for accurate 3D kinematic measurements, especially when an accelerometer or 2D lateral camera analysis is impractical or susceptible to error. Abstract Introduction The social and economic consequences of COVID‐19 have the potential to affect individuals and populations through different pathways (e.g., bereavement, loss of social interaction). Objective This study adopted a solicited diary method to understand how mental health was affected during England's first lockdown. We also considered the experiences of diary keeping during a pandemic from the perspective of public participants. Methods Fifteen adults older than 18 years of age were recruited from northwest England. Diarists completed semistructured online diaries for 8 weeks, which was combined with weekly calls. A focus group captured participants' experiences of diary keeping. Findings Four key factors influenced mental health, which fluctuated over time and in relation to diarists' situations. These concerned navigating virus risk, loss of social connections and control and constrictions of the domestic space. Diarists also enacted a range of strategies to cope with the pandemic. This included support from social networks, engagement with natural environments, establishing normality, finding meaning and taking affirmative action. Conclusion Use of diary methods provided insights into the lived experiences of the early months of a global pandemic. As well as contributing evidence on its mental health effects, diarists' accounts illuminated considerable resourcefulness and strategies of coping with positive effects for well‐being. While diary keeping can also have therapeutic benefits during adversity, ethical and practical issues need to be considered, which include the emotional nature of diary keeping. Public Contribution Members of the public were involved in interpretation of data as well as critiquing the overall diary method used in the study.
