15. The breeding and colonization of Hyalomma excavatum in laboratory conditions

Abstract

In this study, colonization and developmental period of different stages of Hyalomma excavatum was determined under laboratory conditions. Three-host life-cycle of H. excavatum was found to be completed in 155 (98-212) days under laboratory conditions. It was determined that a single unfed adult female H. excavatum suck 0,81 (0,58-1,11) gr blood during the feeding and layed an avarage of 8.786 (5.917-12.372) eggs. For the colonization of H. excavatum, gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were found to be reasonably suitable host for generating engorded larvae and unfed nymph. As well as calf and rabbit were observed to be suitable hosts for the generation of adult unfed ticks and larvae from these adult ticks, respectively.

Abstract

Theileriosis is one of the most prevalent infectious diseases of livestock in the Arabian Peninsula, and causes high rates of mortality and morbidity in sheep and cattle. However, there is a paucity of information on the distribution of Theileriaspp. over the whole region and their impact on different hosts. The present study carried out a country-wide molecular survey for Theileriaspp. of livestock in Oman across four governorates. The aim of the survey was to define the prevalence of Theileriaspp. in cattle, sheep and goats, highlight risk factors for infection and identify the main tick species involved in parasite transmission.

20. Attenuation characteristics of peak ground acceleration from fault trace of the 1999 Kocaeli (Turkey) earthquake and comparison of spectral acceleration with seismic design code

Abstract

The 17 August 1999 Kocaeli earthquake in Turkey produced a major surface rupture. We traced this surface rupture from Golcuk to Duzce and located it accurately by using GPS. The closest distance from the surface rupture to the strong motion observation sites were determined. Then the attenuation characteristics of the observed peak ground acceleration were compared with the attenuation relation given by Fukushima and Tanaka (1992), which is suitable for the near-fault zone in Japan and gives results that closely match data recorded during the 1995 Hyogo-ken Nanbu earthquake in Japan. Although this attenuation relation was developed for Japan, we found that it agreed well with the KOCAELI earthquake. Furthermore, the observed spectral acceleration of 5% damping was compared with the building design code of Turkey and the observed level was lower than the code.

38. Monostotic fibrous dysplasia presenting in maxilla: a case report.

Abstract

Fibrous dysplasia (FD) is a bone disorder in which fibrous tissue replaces normal bone. FD can be monostotic (10%-25%) or polyostotic (50-90%) and is typically diagnosed accidentally on radiographs. Craniofacial lesions are typically unilateral and are diagnosed by clinical assessment and radiographic evaluation. This report describes the case of a 50-yearold female patient who had presented with painless swelling of the right maxilla and was diagnosed with FD. Subsequent bone scintigraphy identified the lesion as monostotic. Based on the patient's age and the radiographic data, contour correction was performed. However, 1 year after surgery, the lesion regrew and the treatment was repeated., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: None declared.

39. Tooth extraction from a patient with cavernous hemangioma in maxillofacial region: case report.

Abstract

Hemangiomas are benign vascular tumors which represent a rapid growth pattern followed by the involution phase. Generally, they are located in the soft tissues and are usually diagnosed in the first decade of life. Hemangiomas are mostly asymptomatic and rarely affect jaw bones. Mandible is affected more often than maxilla. If there is no complication present, treatment may not be necessary. Treatment planning of hemangiomas should be done by considering the location and the size of the lesion as well as the proximity to vital anatomical structures. The aim of this case report is to describe the procedures of tooth extraction in a patient who had been diagnosed as having maxillary cavernous hemangioma., Competing Interests: Conflict of interest: None declared.

40. Knowledge levels of and attitudes to organ donation and transplantation among university students.

Abstract

Objective: The aim of the present study was to determine knowledge levels and attitudes about organ donation and transplantation among university students., Methods: This descriptive study was performed with third-grade students of medicine, pharmacy, and law at a university. Samples weren't selected in the study and it was executed with 145 students who had agreed to participate in the study. The data was collected using a questionnaire of 19 questions. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data., Results: 71.7% of students had positive views about transplantation of their own organs to a suitable recipient, with half of them giving being useful to others as a reason. Among students who had negative views about organ donation, the most important reason given was that it would mean a loss of bodily integrity. 44.1% of participants had positive views about transplantation of their relatives' organs to another person after death. 51.7% of participants had positive views about transplantation of the organs of a homeless person to another person after death., Conclusion: Students had generally positive views about organ donation. However; organ transplantation and donation should be included in the students' educational programs in order to increase positive attitudes and organ donations, and transform attitudes into behaviors., Competing Interests: No conflict of interest was declared by the authors.
