Calls for reframing the subject matter of Religious Education in schools include the tricky question of how to select from a world of potentially interesting and relevant material. Pedagogues have long questioned the educational logic that takes so-called substantive knowledge as its starting point and imagines education to follow a linear path from simple to complex. Scholars of Religious Studies have addressed similar questions of how to bring the subject matter to life through taking a more disciplinary orientation , though this approach is problematized by RE's multi-disciplinary foundations This paper brings together pedagogical and disciplinary perspectives to the question of exemplification in the production of curricular subject matter. Taking as its context RE in schools, the paper assumes the didactic principle that there is considerable difference between putative disciplinary knowledge and school subject matter and that the production of school subject matter requires considered processes of pedagogical transformation and reduction. The paper explores the logic governing this transformation by drawing on the pedagogical analysis of exemplarity offered by Martin Wagenschein alongside the more disciplinary analyses of the place of examples from Jonathan Z. Smith.

Uncertainty exists regarding whether including ICD-8 codes alongside ICD-10 is needed for complete disease identification. We assessed the extent of left-truncation and left-censoring in the DNPR arising from omitting ICD-8 codes.Patients and Methods: We sampled 500,000 Danes ≥ 40 years of age in 1995, 2010, and 2018. From the DNPR, we identified cardiovascular, endocrine, gastrointestinal, neurological, pulmonary, rheumatic, and urogenital diseases as well as fractures. We obtained the number of people with a disease recorded with ICD-8 codes only (ie, the ICD-8 record would be left-truncated by not using ICD-8 codes), ICD-8 plus ICD-10 codes (ie, the ICD-8 record would be left-censored by not using ICD-8 codes), and ICD-10 codes only. For each ICD group, we calculated the proportion of people with the disease relative to the total sample (ie, 500,000 people) and the total number of people with the disease across all ICD groups.Results: Overall, the left-truncation issue decreased over the years. Relative to all people with a disease, the left-truncated proportion was for example 59% in 1995 and < 2% in 2018 for diabetes mellitus; 93% in 1995, and 54% in 2018 for appendicitis. The left-truncation issue increased with age group for most diseases. The proportion of disease records left-censored by not using ICD-8 codes was generally low but highest for chronic diseases.Conclusion: The left-truncation issue diminished over sample years, particularly for chronic diseases, yet remained rather high for selected surgical diseases. The left-truncation issue increased with age group for most diseases. Current educative practices have given rise to the predominant pressure to increase production and speed in academic work and education in general. Educators need to ask whether conceiving of education in such terms is what we really want our children and youth to experience. In this paper, we aim to interrogate the question of how a deceleration of education is possible, and why this would be desirable for students and teachers. We do this in a circuitous way, by exploring four exercises in pedagogical deceleration. These exercises are inspired by philological, didactical, pedagogical, and phenomenological practices.

In this paper, we will propose an idea of education as conversations between friends on matters of common concern. In a scholarly and pedagogical climate of competition, testing and accountability, there seems to be little room for true pedagogical and scholarly conversation. What we aim to develop here, is a vocabulary that is able to capture some educational experiences that are being repressed in the current educational and academic discourse and practice. Starting from our own experiences as higher education workers, we argue for a way of speaking about educational practices that focus on the matters of common concern that gather- and put into conversation--students and teachers. We call this conversation a studious discourse so as to distinguish it from other forms of conversation and outline a definition of the kinds of friendships that potentially revolve around this form of communication. We base our argument on a reading of Jürgen Oelkers and Martin Wagenschein's pedagogical and didactical reflections and propose ultimately that education is not about the inner development of measurable skills or competences, but rather about becoming part of particular forms of communication about matters of common concern.

Background: Approximately 15% of patients undergoing radical cystectomy (RC) develop benign ureteroenteric strictures. Of these strictures, the majority are located in the left ureter. To lower the rate of strictures, a retrosigmoid ileal conduit has been suggested. Objective: To investigate the feasibility and safety of a retrosigmoid ileal conduit during robot-assisted RC in bladder cancer patients. Design, setting, and participants: This randomized controlled trial included 303 patients from all five cystectomy centers in Denmark from May 2020 to August 2022. Participants were diagnosed with bladder cancer and scheduled for robot-assisted RC with an ileal conduit. Intervention: Intervention group: a retrosigmoid ileal conduit was constructed using approximately 25 cm of the terminal ileum and tunneled behind the sigmoid where the left ureter was anastomosed from end to side. Control group: the conventional ileal conduit ad modum Bricker with individual end-to-side anastomoses. Outcome measurements and statistical analysis: Patients were analyzed by the intention-to-treat approach. Complications within 90 d were categorized using the Clavien-Dindo grading system and compared using Fisher’s exact test. Wilcoxon’s test was used for pre- and postoperative renal function. Results and limitations: Of the 149 patients randomized for the retrosigmoid ileal conduit (MOSAIC), a total of 137 (92%) patients received the allocated conduit. Postoperative complications were distributed equally between the two groups. The relative risk of Clavien-Dindo complications of grade ≥III was 1.12 (95% confidence interval: 0.96–1.31) in the intervention group compared with the control group. Conclusions: The retrosigmoid ileal conduit with robot-assisted RC was technically feasible. Early postoperative complications were not significantly different when comparing the two groups. Further investigation of long-term complications, including strictures, is needed. Patient summary: We compared a conventional urinary diversion with a longer conduit to prevent constriction from developing in the ureters. The new conduit is feasible and safe within the first 90 d, with no differences in postoperative complications from those of the conventional diversion.

ObjectivesThere are indications that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound negative effect on psychological well-being. Here, we investigated this hypothesis using longitudinal data from a large global cohort of runners, providing unprecedented leverage for understanding how the temporal development in the pandemic pressure relates to well-being across countries.DesignProspective cohort study.SettingGlobal.ParticipantsWe used data from the worldwide Garmin-RUNSAFE cohort that recruited runners with a Garmin Connect account, which is used for storing running activities tracked by a Garmin device. A total of 7808 Garmin Connect users from 86 countries participated.Primary and secondary outcome measuresFrom 1 August 2019 (prepandemic) to 31 December 2020, participants completed surveys every second week that included the five-item WHO Well-Being Index (WHO-5). Pandemic pressure was proxied by the number of COVID-19-related deaths per country, retrieved from the Coronavirus Resource Centre at Johns Hopkins University. Panel data regression including individual- and time-fixed effects was used to study the association between country-level COVID-19-related deaths over the past 14 days and individual-level self-reported well-being over the past 14 days.ResultsThe 7808 participants completed a total of 125 409 WHO-5 records over the study period. Abstract Studies examining the association between type 1 diabetes (T1D) and atopic diseases, i.e., atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis and asthma have yielded conflicting results due to different algorithms for classification, sample size issues and risk of referral bias of exposed cohorts with frequent contact to health care professionals. Using Danish national registries and well-established disease algorithms, we examined the bidirectional association between T1D and atopic diseases in childhood and adolescence using Cox Proportional Hazard regression compared to two different unexposed cohorts from a population of 1.5 million Danish children born from 1997 to 2018. We found no associations between T1D and atopic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, or asthma (defined after age five). However, in multivariable analysis we found an increased risk of persistent wheezing (defined as asthma medication before age five) after T1D with an adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) of 1.70 [1.17–2.45]. We also identified an increased risk of developing T1D after persistent wheezing with aHR of 1.24 [1.13–1.36]. This study highlights similar risks of atopic diseases in children with T1D and of T1D in children with atopic disease after age of five years versus healthy controls. However, more research is needed to understand the possible early immunological effects of the link between persistent wheezing and T1D.

The study aimed to estimate the prevalence of skin problems in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes (T1D) using insulin pumps (IPs) and/or continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) in our center and analyze their association with various factors. As part of the international ISPAD JENIOUS-initiated SKIN-PEDIC project, we interviewed and examined patients who visited the regional pediatric diabetes center in Opole (Poland) for four weeks regarding the use of IP and/or CGM and the presence of skin problems. Body mass index (BMI) and glycemic parameters were obtained retrospectively from medical records. Among 115 individuals (45.2% girls, 83.5% IP users, 96.5% CGM users), old scars were the most common skin problem (IP users 53.1%; CGM users 66.4%), while ≥2 types of skin problems co-occurred (IP users 40.6%; CGM users 27.3%). Longer IP use was associated with a higher prevalence of skin problems (50% for IP < 1 year, 98.1%-IP 1–3 years, 100% for IP > 3 years; p < 0.001), pointing out extra attention with IP use > 1 year. No significant associations were found between skin problems and gender, age, BMI centile and glycemic parameters. Dermatological complications were common among children using IP and CGM in our center, highlighting the need for vigilant monitoring and early intervention to manage these skin-related issues effectively.

Abstract Background Children with the most severe parental mental health conditions have an elevated risk of numerous adversities including somatic morbidity. However, there is no knowledge concerning physical health in most children affected by parental mental health conditions. Therefore, the aim was to examine the association between different severities of parental mental health conditions and somatic morbidity in children of different age-groups and further explore the combinations of maternal and paternal mental health conditions on child somatic morbidity. Methods In this register-based cohort study, we included all children born in Denmark between 2000–2016 and linked parents. Parental mental health conditions were categorised into four severity groups (no, minor, moderate, and severe). Somatic morbidity in offspring was categorised into broad disease categories corresponding to the International Classification of Diseases. We estimated the risk ratio (RR) using Poisson regression, of the first registered diagnosis in different age-groups. The Greenland Ice Sheet is the largest land ice contributor to sea level rise. This will continue in the future but at an uncertain rate and observational estimates are limited to the last few decades. Understanding the long-term glacier response to external forcing is key to improving projections. Here we use historical photographs to calculate ice loss from 1880-2012 for Jakobshavn, Helheim, and Kangerlussuaq glacier. We estimate ice loss corresponding to a sea level rise of 8.1 ± 1.1 millimetres from these three glaciers. Projections of mass loss for these glaciers, using the worst-case scenario, Representative Concentration Pathways 8.5, suggest a sea level contribution of 9.1-14.9 mm by 2100. RCP8.5 implies an additional global temperature increase of 3.7 °C by 2100, approximately four times larger than that which has taken place since 1880. We infer that projections forced by RCP8.5 underestimate glacier mass loss which could exceed this worst-case scenario.

In this paper, we present exemplarity as an alternative to the dominant evidence framework, and as the proper foundation for pedagogical reflection and action. This paper focuses attention on how exemplarity can serve to elicit and develop educational judgement. In other words, rather than evidence, teachers need good and bad examples of ways of acting and being to shape and sharpen their educational judgement. By turning to the exemplary approach, the space of reflection is widened, and educational judgement is challenged and provoked. The paper highlights how teacher judgement is formed through the challenge of examples.

Marine-terminating outlet glacier terminus traces, mapped from satellite and aerial imagery, have been used extensively in understanding how outlet glaciers adjust to climate change variability over a range of timescales. Numerous studies have digitized termini manually, but this process is labor intensive, and no consistent approach exists. A lack of coordination leads to duplication of efforts, particularly for Greenland, which is a major scientific research focus. At the same time, machine learning techniques are rapidly making progress in their ability to automate accurate extraction of glacier termini, with promising developments across a number of optical and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite sensors. These techniques rely on high-quality, manually digitized terminus traces to be used as training data for robust automatic traces. Here we present a database of manually digitized terminus traces for machine learning and scientific applications. These data have been collected, cleaned, assigned with appropriate metadata including image scenes, and compiled so they can be easily accessed by scientists. The TermPicks data set includes 39 060 individual terminus traces for 278 glaciers with a mean of 136 ± 190 and median of 93 of traces per glacier. Across all glaciers, 32 567 dates have been digitized, of which 4467 have traces from more than one author, and there is a duplication rate of 17 %. We find a median error of ∼ 100 m among manually traced termini. Most traces are obtained after 1999, when Landsat 7 was launched. We also provide an overview of an updated version of the Google Earth Engine Digitization Tool (GEEDiT), which has been developed specifically for future manual picking of the Greenland Ice Sheet.
