Functional and non-functional endosseous dental implants were clinically compared in beagle mandibles for up to one year post-operatively. Differing biomechanical conditions led to clinical differences between functional and non-functional implants. The tissue-implant interfaces of functional and non-functional endosseous dental implants were compared histologically for up to one year postoperatively. Nonmineralized connective tissue zones (a "fibrous capsule") existed in all functional interfaces. Direct, or nearly direct, bone apposition to implants occurred in non-functional interfaces. Stress-relaxation measurements were performed on specimens of radicular human dentin. The relaxation modulus showed a linear dependence on the logarithm of time and the approximation to the logarithmic distribution function of relaxation times was used to predict the behavior of other viscoelastic properties. A short review is given of the observations which have been made on the mechanical properties of human hair under axial tension. Stress-strain curves of dry single fibres of human hair from patients with hypothyroidism and acromegaly revealed a distinctive alteration in the high yield region. The biophysical basis for this anomalous behaviour is not known. Attention is directed to the potential value of further studies of the physical characteristics of hair with special reference to mass screening programmes for evidence of disease. Chemical and crystallographic analysis of random samples of dental calculi and dentin obtained from 19 patients showed structural identity or close similarity to the "octaphosphate" hydroxyapatite crystalline pattern.
