Abstract

The benefits that city residents receive from green spaces related to maintaining their health are a group of cultural ecosystem services (CES). To avoid subjectivity in the assessment of CES, there is a methodology based on determining the effectiveness of green spaces in providing them. Currently, there is no technological scheme for assessing the CES available to urban planners. Accordingly, the purpose of the paper is to highlight the technological features of the CES assessment. Methodologically, the work consists in creating a geodatabase (DB) on the state of green spaces and anthropogenic pressure on them. All the calculation indicators proposed in the methodology should be included in the database as attributes, and their calculation should be performed as working scenarios documented in the form of automated calculation models, etc. The technology is based on QGIS/SAGA spatial analysis tools (QGIS version 3.32.1-Lima), which contains the necessary basic geoprocessing algorithms and modules for calculating the CES. The technology for estimating CES is presented in the Model_CES. The functioning of the Model_CES depends on the amount and quality of input data. As input data, the database includes information on: urban green spaces; vegetation; landscapes; areas with multi-age urban development; local areas of urban population concentration; survey statistics, etc. Attribute information is the basis for the correct operation of the Model_CES algorithms, in particular, the calculation of parameters by which it is proposed to assess the volume of CES. Adequate to the parameters, a file database in the GeoPackage format was formed in accordance with the standards of the Open Geospatial Consortium - Model_CES, which contains the input data sets: tabular: "survey_all"; vector: "Vegetation", "BGI", "local_district", "hollow", "age_consruct". Technological procedures and algorithm for calculating CES volumes and risks of their loss in Model_CES form calculation blocks: 1. a block for determining the potential of green spaces in providing CES; 2. a block for determining the effectiveness of the green space in providing CES - the real supply of CES; 3. a block for calculating the volume of ecosystem services and the risks of their loss; 4. a block for calculating the score of alternative availability of the green space. As a result, the proposed algorithm produces the output geodataset "BGI_CES". After the implementation of the technology, this dataset contains attribute information about each green space, in particular, their ability to provide cultural ecosystem services, efficiency in providing CES, the volume of CES and the risks of their loss. Thus, the paper solves the scientific task of creating an assessment technology that meets the following requirements: it is suitable for processing information that is spatially distributed; it is focused on the availability of uncertain and often limited data; it is available for use by specialists of design and other institutions that may be limited in data. The presented technology can be used in urban planning practice as a tool for improving the quality of urban green spaces, their sustainable development and providing citizens with the maximum amount of CES.

2. Assessment of the volume of provision of cultural ecosystem services by Kyiv green zones

Abstract

Among the groups of ecosystem services, cultural ecosystem services (CES) are the most in demand in cities. Currently, the status of the CES evaluation remains problematic. Accordingly, the purpose of the work was to develop the provisions of the methodology for estimating the volumes of the most demanded CES and determining the value of green areas in providing CES, taking into account the demand for them. Methodologically, the work consisted in the steps: 1) identification of indicators of the effectiveness of the provision of CES, which are of decisive importance when citizens choose green areas to visit, which is an aspect of the CES offer (residents' perception of green areas; the character of their use; value and suitability to perform recreational and wellness functions; indicators defining restrictions on the use of green areas, etc.) 2) Normalization of calculated indicators based on a single scale, to determine the total volume of the CES offer: was applied the one-sided increasing Harrington desirability function. 3) Development of a methodology for the entire CES calculation. According to the general algorithm, the evaluation was based on the sequential determination of the potential of the green zone in providing CES, as an average value of the indicators of perception of the territory and of the total CES offer - the number of CES that the green zone is able to provide, taking into account the value of CES restrictions. As a result of calculations according to the algorithm, an assessment of the volume of CES of was estimated in the selected 14 green zones of the city Kyiv. The calculation showed that none of the selected green zones provide the maximum volumes of CES, only 3 of them have higher than average volumes, 9 have average volumes, and 1 green zone each has minimum and lower than average volumes. At the same time, the potential of the researched green zones for the provision of CES: the maximum volumes in 2 zones and in the absolute majority - 11 is higher than the average volume. Accordingly, in almost all green zones there is a lack of receipt (loss) of significant amounts of CES, mainly due to the presence of problems that lead to a deterioration of the perception of green zones by residents. In order to determine the consumer value of green zones the indicator of alternative availability of green zones was used, which reflects the ratio of supply of ES and demand for them. Among those investigated in the work, 2 green zones were identified, which due to low supply in areas with high demand for CES, should receive maximum attention when making priority management decisions. Thus, the research solved the scientific task of objectively taking into account in the CES evaluation all aspects that determine the CES offer. This method, in combination with the determination of the value of green areas in providing CES, can be used in urban planning practice as a tool for improving the quality of urban green areas, their sustainable development and providing citizens with the maximum amount of CES.

Abstract

In this paper, we assess geotourism potential of sandstone rock formations in the Outer Eastern Carpathians on the territory of Ukraine. We focus on the seven sites with sandstone rock outcrops, which are popular among hikers due to their aesthetic attractiveness and historic significance. Applying the two well-acknowledged methods of geotourism potential assessment, namely the Geosite Assessment Model (GAM) and the Brilha method, we evaluate significance of the selected rock formations as geological and geomorphological sites, which can be valuable for scientific and educational use as well. In the process of the analysis, we compare the assessment methods in terms of how complementary or contradictory results they may render if they are applied simultaneously to the same cases. We find that sandstone rock outcrops in the Ukrainian part of the Outer Eastern Carpathians are underexplored as geotourism attractions and more scientific attention is required to those and similar sites in the area to fully appreciate their potential.

4. Impossibility of Perfect Recovering Cosinusoidal Signal of Any Phase Sampled with Nyquist Rate

Abstract

In this paper, a problem of a perfect recovering cosinusoidal signal of any phase being sampled critically is considered. It is shown that there is no general solution to this problem. Its detailed analysis presented here shows that recovering both the original cosinusoidal signal amplitude and its phase is not possible at all. Only one of this quantities can be recovered under the assumption that the second one is known. And even then, performing some additional calculations is needed. As a byproduct, it is shown here that a transfer function of the recovering filter that must be used in the case of the critical sampling differs from the one which is used when a cosinusoidal signal is sampled with the use of a sampling frequency greater than the Nyquist rate. All the results achieved in this paper are soundly justified by thorough derivations.

Abstract

When the sampling of an analog signal uses the sampling rate equal to exactly twice the value of a maximal frequency occurring in the signal spectrum, it is called a critical one. As known from the literature, this kind of sampling can be ambiguous in the sense that the reconstructed signal from the samples obtained by criti-cal sampling is not unique. For example, such is the case of sampling of a cosinusoidal signal of any phase. In this paper, we explain in very detail the reasons of this behavior. Furthermore, it is also shown here that manipulating values of the coefficients of the transfer function of an ideal rectangular reconstruction filter at the transition edges from its zero to non-zero values, and vice versa, does not eliminate the ambiguity mentioned above.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next generation very high energy gamma-ray observatory. It will consist of three classes of telescopes, of large, medium and small sizes. The small telescopes, of 4 m diameter, will be dedicated to the observations of the highest energy gamma-rays, above several TeV. We present the technical characteristics of a single mirror, 4 m diameter, Davies-Cotton telescope for the CTA and the performance of the sub-array consisting of the telescopes of this type. The telescope will be equipped with a fully digital camera based on custom made, hexagonal Geiger-mode avalanche photodiodes. The development of cameras based on such devices is an RnD since traditionally photomultipliers are used. The photodiodes are now being characterized at various institutions of the CTA Consortium. Glass mirrors will be used, although an alternative is being considered: composite mirrors that could be adopted if they meet the project requirements. Background/Aim: As continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT) has emerged as a standard therapy in pediatric intensive care units (PICU), many related issues that may have an impact on circuit survival have gained in importance. Objective of the study was an evaluation of factors associated with circuit survival, including anticoagulation (ACG). Methods: Retrospective study that included 40 patients, who in total received 7636 hours of CRRT during 150 sessions (84 filters, 4260 hours with heparin anticoagulation (Hep-ACG); 66 filters, 3376 hours with regional citrate anticoagulation (RCA)). Results: The Kaplan-Meier analysis of the total circuit survival time depending on the type of ACG did not demonstrate a significant difference between Hep-ACG and RCA. The percentage of clotted filters was significantly higher in case of smaller filters (HF20: 58.8%; ST60: 29.5%; ST100: 15.8%), and their lifetime was significantly lower regardless of ACG (the mean and median lifetime for HF20: 38.7/27.0 h; for ST60: 54.1/72.0 h., for ST100: 62.1/72.0 h, respectively). Conclusions: Irrespectively of filter size, filter clotting occurs within the first 24 hours after the initiation of CRRT. Most commonly, clotting affects small filters, and their lifetime is significantly shorter as compared to larger filters regardless of the type of the ACG.

Abstract

Background/Aims: The recent improvements of management of patients in pediatric intensive care units (PICU) are associated with improved outcome. However, this decrease in mortality is associated with an increased number of children with acute kidney injury (AKI), especially in patients with multiorgan failure. Methods: The report presents a retrospective analysis of 25 cases of AKI (assessed based on the pRIFLE criteria) in PICU within 7 years. Results: AKI was diagnosed in 1.24% of all hospitalized children. AKI percentage duration (as compared to the total hospitalization time) in the children who died vs. the survivors was 79.55% vs. 46.19%, respectively (pvs. 49% in non-oliguric children. Averaged urine output values in the first week of hospitalization in the deceased vs. survivors were 1.49 vs. 2.57 ml/kg/h, respectively (pConclusions: Oliguria should not be considered as a sensitive parameter for AKI diagnosing in children below one year of age. A decreased mean urine output in the first week of PICU hospitalization (less than 1.4 ml/kg/h) should be considered as a poor prognostic factor. In many cases AKI was diagnosed too infrequently and too late.

12. Sandstone rock outcrops in the Outer Eastern Carpathians in Ukraine: Assessment of geotourism potential by the GAM and Brilha methods

Abstract

In this paper, we assess geotourism potential of sandstone rock formations in the Outer Eastern Carpathians on the territory of Ukraine. We focus on the seven sites with sandstone rock outcrops, which are popular among hikers due to their aesthetic attractiveness and historic significance. Applying the two well-acknowledged methods of geotourism potential assessment, namely the Geosite Assessment Model (GAM) and the Brilha method, we evaluate significance of the selected rock formations as geological and geomorphological sites, which can be valuable for scientific and educational use as well. In the process of the analysis, we compare the assessment methods in terms of how complementary or contradictory results they may render if they are applied simultaneously to the same cases. We find that sandstone rock outcrops in the Ukrainian part of the Outer Eastern Carpathians are underexplored as geotourism attractions and more scientific attention is required to those and similar sites in the area to fully appreciate their potential.

Abstract

Epithelial wound repair assures the recovery of the epithelial barrier after wounding. During wound healing epithelial cells migrate to cover the wound surface. The presented experiments were carried out to compare the migration of human keratinocytes from primary and secondary culture on polystyrene, collagen, and fibrin glue used in clinical techniques. The images of migrating keratinocytes were recorded and analyzed using computer-aided methods. The results show that the character of the substrate strongly affects the speed and turning behavior of keratinocytes locomoting over it. The highest motile activity of human skin keratinocytes was found on fibrin glue substratum. It was found that locomotion of freely moving isolated cells was much faster than that of cell sheets. The autologous keratinocytes cultured in vitro were applied with fibrin glue to cover trophic wounds. The transplantation of human autologous keratinocyte suspension in fibrin glue upon long-lasting trophic wounds appeared to induce rapid and permanent wound healing.

19. Impossibility of Perfect Recovering Cosinusoidal Signal of Any Phase Sampled with Nyquist Rate.

Abstract

In this paper, a problem of a perfect recovering cosinusoidal signal of any phase being sampled critically is considered. It is shown that there is no general solution to this problem. Its detailed analysis presented here shows that recovering both the original cosinusoidal signal amplitude and its phase is not possible at all. Only one of this quantities can be recovered under the assumption that the second one is known. And even then, performing some additional calculations is needed. As a byproduct, it is shown here that a transfer function of the recovering filter that must be used in the case of the critical sampling differs from the one which is used when a cosinusoidal signal is sampled with the use of a sampling frequency greater than the Nyquist rate. Abstract

When the sampling of an analog signal uses the sampling rate equal to exactly twice the value of a maximal frequency occurring in the signal spectrum, it is called a critical one. As known from the literature, this kind of sampling can be ambiguous in the sense that the reconstructed signal from the samples obtained by criti-cal sampling is not unique. For example, such is the case of sampling of a cosinusoidal signal of any phase. In this paper, we explain in very detail the reasons of this behavior. Furthermore, it is also shown here that manipulating values of the coefficients of the transfer function of an ideal rectangular reconstruction filter at the transition edges from its zero to non-zero values, and vice versa, does not eliminate the ambiguity mentioned above. Abstract

This work examines the method of geoinformation modeling in determining the degree of soil pollution by Pb compounds in the highway ecosystems, used as agricultural areas. The methodology allows identifying the spatial parameters of the area of pollution and the territories safe for cultivating crops by determining the actual level of soil contamination. The actual level of pollution (ALP) reflects the estimated balance of Pb compounds in soils over a specified period of time and the duration of pollution (or decontamination) period under the conditions of existing anthropogenic pressure. ALP is defined as the difference between the calculated amount of Pb compounds that have been introduced into the soils of the geosystems from the main sources of emissions and their calculated amount that has been lost from the soil and/or removed from migratory flows (by being transferred to the state conditionally inaccessible by plants), for the same time interval. Methodology verification took place in the geographic area representative of forest-steppe zone of Ukraine by its environmental conditions and agricultural use. Methodology implementation was conducted by building spatial regional databases, utilizing the data from field and laboratory soils studies and open sources of digital spatial data. Based on geoinformation modeling, we determined the configuration and quantitative characteristics of the primary zone of contamination of the soil surface layer with Pb compounds. We presented the calculation procedure of quantitative indicators of soil decontamination from Pb compounds as they redistribute through the soil profile via main geochemical scenarios. We also provided the rate of this process under the conditions of the existing anthropogenic pressure. Using modeling results, we mapped areas of removal, transit and accumulation of Pb compounds and territories receiving pollution from highway geosystems. Verification of the modeling results during laboratory studies proved the objectivity of the proposed methodology in determining the current levels of pollution with Pb compounds. Our methodology could be utilized for a set of different environmental factors as well as other heavy metals with a purpose of identifying areas safe for cultivating crops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Solute generation rates, distribution volumes and compartment effects control the in vivo efficiency of any extracorporeal therapy such as extracorporeal liver support (ELS) used to remove bile acids accumulating in acute-on-chronic liver patients. The aim of this study was to identify and to examine kinetic parameters of two major bile acids using mathematical modeling. The kinetics of cholic (CA) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDCA) were described by one- and two-compartment models with central elimination by decreasing or constant extracorporeal clearance, constant bile acid generation rate, and constant apparent distribution volume. Concentration profiles collected in 13 ELS sessions done in 8 patients were included for model calculations For the one-compartment model, the average volumes and generation rates were 30 ± 6 [l], 0.19 ± 0.06 [μmol/min] for CA and 22 ± 5 [l], 0.29 ± 0.08 [μmol/min] for CDCA, respectively. For the one-compartment model and average normalized concentrations, the volumes and generation rates were 25 [l], 0.28 [μmol/min] for CA and 18 [l], 0.37 [μmol/min] for CDCA, respectively. For the two-compartment model, average normalized concentrations, the same initial concentration in both compartments, and assuming a 10% post-treatment rebound, the volume and generation rates were 25 [l], 0.27 [μmol/min] for CA and 19 [l], 0.32 [μmol/min] for CDCA, respectively. The generation rate for CDCA is higher when compared to that of CA and independent of the number of compartments. Assuming a constant extracorporeal clearance overestimates generation rate and distribution volume. The kinetic parameters of one- and two-compartment models are comparable for the same bile acid. Abstract

This study explored and compared people's interactions with urban greenspace (UGS) using case studies in three Eastern European countries – Armenia, Georgia and Ukraine. These countries have experienced radical changes in governance systems and socio-economic structures, characteristic of a transition from planned to market economies. Recently, Armenia, Georgia and Ukraine have been arenas for armed conflicts, which have dramatically heightened instability throughout the region. Urban planners in Eastern Europe therefore urgently need context-relevant knowledge to facilitate the critical work of (re-)building more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable cities. An unrestricted, self-selected online survey was used to collect data in 2021–2022. A total of 3573 respondents completed the survey (N = 1142 in Armenia, N = 1069 in Georgia and N = 1362 in Ukraine). We identified 12 key explanatory factors linked to the frequency of people's interactions with UGS using multiple ordinal logistic regressions. The core findings are: (i) most factors are country-specific; (ii) age of respondents had a large effect on the frequency of UGS use in Armenia and Georgia, where older people were mostly infrequent users of UGS; (iii) those who lived further from UGS or could not access it on foot were less likely to use it often; and (iv) the only common key factor across three countries was that people who 'do not want' to use UGS are infrequent users. The study shows that only 10–18% of respondents were satisfied with the UGS availability and quality. Among many constraints related to UGS use, litter in UGS and lack of time were the most mentioned. Large parks were the most preferred types of UGS. Our findings confirm the need for urban planners in Eastern Europe to consider and integrate diverse factors influencing people's willingness to interact with urban nature. A priority is to understand how to bring infrequent users to UGS, particularly older people in various cultural settings in Eastern European countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

30. Explant-Like Passaging of Cells Growing on Portable Substrata Permits the Avoidance of Enzyme Application and Facilitates the Passage Procedure

Abstract

The experiments presented in this paper show how growing cells on portable substrats can be useful to facilitate and accelerate the passaging (subculture) of anchorage-dependent cells. Experiments have shown that portable substrats are cheap, commercially available, and transparent. They are easily cut into various shapes and sizes, and are easy to sterilize. Portable substrats are also friendly to cells and permit faster than usual cell passaging procedures. Anchorage-dependent cells growing on the bottom of a culture vessel made of glass or polystyrene can be quickly passaged with previously-cut small fragments of glass fiber or nylon meshes or small fragments of polyester foil as well as nylon fishing lines and biodegradable surgeon threads that have been inserted into the vessel. The surfaces of such fragments of portable supports are quickly overgrown with cells and can be easily transferred to a new culture vessel. As with tissue explants, cells migrate and grow over the bottom of the new culture vessels. Using cell viability tests, analyses of proliferation and fluorescence microscopy, we confirmed the utility of the investigated substrats for cell culture. In addition, the passaging cells, together with a portable support (like explants), eliminate the need for an application of proteolytic enzymes which modify numerous cell properties and activities and would keep the cell from detaching from the substratum which would lead to the cell rounding and changes in the cell's cytoskeleton architecture.

Abstract

The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a new observatory for very high-energy (VHE) gamma rays. CTA has ambitions science goals, for which it is necessary to achieve full-sky coverage, to improve the sensitivity by about an order of magnitude, to span about four decades of energy, from a few tens of GeV to above 100 TeV with enhanced angular and energy resolutions over existing VHE gamma-ray observatories. An international collaboration has formed with more than 1000 members from 27 countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and North and South America. In 2010 the CTA Consortium completed a Design Study and started a three-year Preparatory Phase which leads to production readiness of CTA in 2014. In this paper we introduce the science goals and the concept of CTA, and provide an overview of the project. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

40. Efficacy of Local Anesthetics in Detachment of Normal 3T3 Mouse Fibroblasts and Prostate Cancer AT-2 Cells from Substrata, in Maintenance of Viable Cells in a Non-Adherent State, and in Preservation of Cell Surface Markers Detected with FlowSight Image Cytometry

Abstract

The local anesthetics procaine, lidocaine and tetracaine permit the reversible detachment of viable cells and their passaging or preservation in a non-adherent state in the absence of proteolytic enzymes. The effects of these anesthetics, dissolved in various media, on cell viability, cell detachment from substrata and preservation of cells in a non-adherent state, were compared using the AT-2 line of rat prostate carcinoma cells of moderate malignancy and the 3T3 mouse fibroblast cell line. It was found that all three local anesthetics can induce cell rounding followed by detachment of over 95% of viable cells in both lines in Ca2+/Mg2+-free PBS. Tetracaine in 1 mM concentration was the most effective in induction of fast cell detachment. However, procaine and lidocaine in 16 mM concentrations were found to be optimal for preservation of cells in a non-adherent state and for the maintenance of cell viability for at least 2 h. The tested anesthetics also cause cell rounding and detachment when present in various cell culture media but these processes occurred much more slowly and less efficiently than in Ca2+/Mg2+-free PBS. Normal 3T3 mouse fibroblasts after detachment and passaging undertake growth reaching the same saturation density in cultures after detachment with procaine or lidocaine as after passaging using trypsin solution. The results suggest that the application of local anesthetics can be a very simple and effective technique for cell passaging in tissue cultures. This technique might decrease side-effects and cell injury caused by trypsinization or cell scraping. The preservation of cells in suspension in a non-adherent state may facilitate analysis of cell surface properties and fractionation of cell mixtures. Avoiding the use of trypsin allows for the preservation of cell surface proteins ICAM, CXCR4, and HCAM analyzed with FlowSight® image flow cytometry.

43. Assessment of thermal diffusion in the natural biological environment

Abstract

AbstractIn this article, the application of the Ångström method in estimating the thermal diffusion parameter in an example of natural biological environment is described. The present study is based on measurements performed in forest soils. The main advantage of the suggested procedure is that it does not need the collection of samples of the soil for a later study in the laboratory. Collecting such data is typically very laborious and requires the preservation of the natural content and structure of all elements of the soil profile in the samples, such as organic components, soil parts, or rocks. The harmonic time runs necessary to implement the Ångström method were computed with the short-time Fourier transform. The obtained results, compared with reference values taken from literature, confirm the accuracy of the proposed methodology.

Abstract

AbstractThis article presents an algorithm based on a short-time Fourier transform for reliable detection of epileptic seizures measured with three-dimensional (3D) accelerometry. The objective of the described work is to provide basic technical information to create useful alarm models for epileptic seizure detection using a mobile phone. The presented material is based on experimental measurements. Finally, the possibility of increasing smartphone detection capability by attaching a triaxial piezoelectric accelerometer to the patient’s wrist is suggested.

45. Locomotion of Human Skin Keratinocytes on Polystyrene, Fibrin, and Collagen Substrata and its Modification by Cell-to-Cell Contacts

Abstract

Epithelial wound repair assures the recovery of the epithelial barrier after wounding. During wound healing epithelial cells migrate to cover the wound surface. The presented experiments were carried out to compare the migration of human keratinocytes from primary and secondary culture on polystyrene, collagen, and fibrin glue used in clinical techniques. The images of migrating keratinocytes were recorded and analyzed using computer-aided methods. The results show that the character of the substrate strongly affects the speed and turning behavior of keratinocytes locomoting over it. The highest motile activity of human skin keratinocytes was found on fibrin glue substratum. It was found that locomotion of freely moving isolated cells was much faster than that of cell sheets. The autologous keratinocytes cultured in vitro were applied with fibrin glue to cover trophic wounds. The transplantation of human autologous keratinocyte suspension in fibrin glue upon long-lasting trophic wounds appeared to induce rapid and permanent wound healing.

46. Directional movement of rat prostate cancer cells in direct-current electric field: involvement of voltagegated Na+ channel activity.

Abstract

A two-part hypothesis has been tested, which proposes that (1) prostate cancer cells are galvanotactic (i.e. respond to an electric field by moving directionally) and (2) voltage-gated Na+ channel activity, which was shown previously to be expressed specifically by strongly metastatic cells, controls galvanotaxis. Two well-defined rat ('Dunning') cell lines, originally derived from the same prostate tumour but differing markedly in their metastatic ability, were used. Cells were exposed to exogenous direct-current electric fields of physiological strength (0.1-4.0 V cm(-1)), their reactions were recorded by light microscopy and analysed by a quantitative tracking method. Voltage-gated Na+ channel activity was modulated pharmacologically using a range of concentrations of a specific channel blocker (tetrodotoxin) or an opener (veratridine). The results showed that the highly metastatic MAT-LyLu cells responded to the application of the electric field strongly by migrating towards the cathode. By contrast, the weakly metastatic AT-2 cells gave no such response. Tetrodotoxin suppressed the galvanotactic response of the MAT-LyLu cells whereas veratridine enhanced it. Both compounds had little effect on the AT-2 cells. These results are consistent with functional voltage-gated Na+ channel expression occurring specifically in highly metastatic cells. This is also the first demonstration of control of galvanotaxis, in any cell type, by voltage-gated Na+ channel activity. The possible underlying mechanisms and the in vivo relevance of these findings are discussed.

Abstract

Xylogenesis was induced in cultures of calli ofHaplopappus gracilis(NUTT.) A. Gray by metabolic shocks brought about by changes in nutrition. Xylogenesis was observed to occur in response to three changes in callus nutrition, caused by the following modifications of Eriksson’s nutrient medium and culture conditions: i) omission of sucrose in the medium for 3 to 6 days and then transfer of the calli onto complete Eriksson’s medium; ii) replacement of sucrose by 0.36*mol l-1xylose for the whole culture period; iii) omission of nitrogen sources(i.e.glycine and NH4NO3omission and replacement of KNO3with equimolar KCI) for the whole culture period.
