This study aimed to compare the efficiency of coagulation/flocculation and electrocoagulation treatments applied to synthetic textile wastewater containing navy blue dye (AM-16). For the coagulation/flocculation process, polyaluminum chloride (PAC 18%) and aluminum sulfate (Al2(SO4)3) were used as coagulants, and cationic polymer (CP) as a coagulation aid. Coagulation/flocculation treatments were assessed at the concentrations of 150–350 mg L-1 for dye, 10–50 mg L-1for PAC 18%, and 0.1–0.5 mg L-1 for CP, with initial pH ranging from 5 to 9. The same ranges were applied for the Al2(SO4)3 tests, except for initial pH, which ranged between 4 and 8. Aluminum electrodes were used for electrocoagulation, as well as the same dye concentration range (150–350 mg L-1) and applied current of 0.3–0.9 A. The response variables were contaminant (AM-16) removal, color removal, chemical oxygen demand, total organic carbon, and reduced toxicity using the microcrustacean Artemia salina as bioindicator. The aim was to compare the performance of different treatment methods (coagulation/flocculation and electrocoagulation) and assess how all independent variables and their interactions affected process efficiency. The results obtained through statistical analysis demonstrated that the most influential factor in coagulation/flocculation in removing AM-16 dye concentration was the initial pH, for both PAC 18% and Al2(SO4)3. However, for aluminum sulfate, dye concentration also had an influence, indicating that an increase in pH and dye concentration favored the removal of contaminant. With respect to wastewater toxicity after treatments, there was a maximum average reduction of approximately 11% for treatment with Al2(SO4)3. Electrocoagulation showed no significant variables at the levels studied but good average performance in removing dye (83.68%) and color (95.1%) from the wastewater. Para o processo de coagulação/floculação, utilizou-se policloreto de alumínio (PAC-18%) e sulfato de alumínio (Al2(SO4)3) como coagulantes e o polímero catiônico (PC) como auxiliar de coagulação. Os tratamentos de coagulação/floculação foram avaliados nas concentrações do corante na faixa de 150–350 mg L-1, concentração do PAC-18% (faixa de 10–50 mg L-1), concentração do PC (faixa de 0,1–0,5 mg L-1), pH inicial (faixa de 5–9). Para os ensaios com o Al2(SO4)3 as mesmas faixas de estudo foram aplicadas, com exceção apenas do pH inicial, para o qual a faixa utilizada foi de 4 a 8. Para o processo de eletrocoagulação, utilizaram-se eletrodos de alumínio, que foi conduzido utilizando-se a faixa de concentração para o corante de 150 a 350 mg L-1 e a corrente aplicada de 0,3 a 0,9 A. As variáveis de resposta foram remoção do contaminante (AM-16), remoção de cor, demanda química de oxigênio, carbono orgânico total e redução de toxicidade empregando-se o microcrustáceo Artemia salina como bioindicador. O objetivo foi comparar o desempenho dos diferentes métodos de tratamento (coagulação/floculação e eletrocoagulação), bem como avaliar como todas as variáveis independentes e suas interações afetaram a eficiência dos processos. Os resultados encontrados por meio da análise estatística demonstraram que fator de maior influência no processo de coagulação/floculação para a remoção da concentração do corante AM-16 foi o pH inicial, tanto para o PAC-18% quanto para o sulfato de alumínio (Al2(SO4)3). No entanto, para este último a concentração do corante também teve influência, mostrando que o aumento no pH e na concentração do corante favorecem a remoção. A gestão integrada de resíduos sólidos urbanos busca a sustentabilidade sob as premissas da proteção ambiental, promoção da saúde e desenvolvimento econômico. Nesse contexto, o presente artigo propõe ações e ferramentas políticas para os governos locais melhorarem a qualidade e a governança na gestão de resíduos. Um conjunto de 23 ações é proposto com base em modelos conceituais existentes e legislação disponível. Os resultados são apresentados em três níveis: planejamento da estrutura administrativa e operacional, gestão de resíduos e avaliação de desempenho. Os resultados mostraram que as ações propostas precisam ser implementadas por meio de ferramentas de política, como legislação municipal, comunicação social, instruções normativas e estudos técnicos. A aplicabilidade da metodologia proposta pode ser replicada em qualquer município para aumentar a eficiência do sistema de gestão de resíduos e foi avaliada positivamente em uma cidade brasileira de médio porte, que apresentou um índice geral de atendimento de 52%., Integrated management of municipal solid waste seeks sustainability under the premises of environmental protection, health promotion, and economic development. In this context, this article proposes actions and policy tools for local governments to improve quality and governance in waste management. A set of 23 actions is proposed based on existing conceptual models and available legislation. The results are presented in three levels as follows: planning of the administrative and operational structure, waste management, and performance evaluation. The results showed that the proposed actions need to be implemented through policy tools, such as municipal legislation, social communication, normative instructions, and technical studies. The applicability of the proposed methodology, which might be replicated in any municipality to increase the efficiency of the waste management system, was positively evaluated in a medium-sized Brazilian city, which presented an overall attendance level of 52%.

Substantial quantities solid waste from livestock are potential sources of nutrients for agroecological production on small-scale farms. The processes used to extract these wastes, however, must be capable of eliminating pathogenic microorganisms. We aimed to evaluate composting and vermicomposting processes by inoculating efficient microorganisms at the field scale. We used cattle and sheep manure with the inoculation of efficient microorganisms (EMs) at concentrations of 0, 2, and 4 mL L-1. In vermicomposting experiments, we added Lumbricus rubellus. After the maturation and stabilization phases of the compounds, concentrations of macronutrients, micronutrients, heavy metals, thermotolerant coliforms and Salmonella spp. were measured. We found that composting processes allowed high availability of macronutrients. Vermicomposting, associated with inoculation with 2 mL L-1 EMs, promoted the lowest concentration of thermotolerant coliforms, ensuring greater elimination of pathogens. The compost produced allowed the valuation of waste and use it as a quality organic fertilizer for agroecological production.

Magnetite consists of a mineral with excellent magnetic and mechanical properties, being present in iron extraction tailings, which are available worldwide in millions of tons deposited in landfills. In relation to variety of the material characteristics, according to specificities of the extraction deposit and processing and reprocessing operations, for its technological application it´s fundamental to perform waste characterization. The most promising forms of magnetite tailings reuse refer to its application in asphalt mixtures and concrete. In this context, this work approaches the main techniques for the technological characterization of magnetite tailings and their contributions, as well as results of studies for incorporation of mineral byproduct into asphalt and concrete. It has been identified that techniques used analyze the tailings and/or composite asphalt material and concrete considering the physical, chemical, mineralogical and thermodynamic properties. The magnetite tail as a partial and integral substituent of the filler material has been found to improve the corrosion resistance and cracking of the asphalt mixtures. In addition, the use of magnetite powder, extracted from waste, improves stiffness and elastic response, as well as promotes microcracks cure of bituminous mixture. Incorporation of powdered mineral waste in the concrete resulted in improvements in the workability and strength of the material. The information in this review provides an overview of the characterization techniques and recycling prospects of magnetite tailings in civil construction., A magnetita consiste em um mineral com excelentes propriedades magnéticas e mecânicas, estando presente em rejeitos da extração de ferro, estes, disponíveis mundialmente em milhões de toneladas depositadas em aterros. Ao considerar a variabilidade das características deste material, conforme especificidades da jazida de extração e das operações de processamento e reprocessamento, para a sua aplicação tecnológica é fundamental realizar a caracterização do resíduo. As mais promissoras formas de reaproveitamento do rejeito de magnetita referem-se a sua aplicação em asfalto e em concreto. Neste contexto, este trabalho aborda as principais técnicas de caracterização tecnológica de rejeitos de magnetita e suas contribuições, bem como resultados de estudos da incorporação do subproduto mineral em misturas betuminosas e concreto. Identificou-se que as técnicas utilizadas analisam os rejeitos e/ou material asfáltico compósito e betão considerando as propriedades físicas, químicas, mineralógicas e termodinâmicas. Verificou-se que o rejeito de magnetita, como substituinte parcial e integral do material de enchimento, melhorou a resistência à corrosão e às rachaduras das misturas asfálticas. Além disso, o uso de pó de magnetita, extraído do resíduo, melhorou a rigidez e a resposta elástica, bem como promoveu a cura de microfissuras da mistura betuminosa. A incorporação de resíduos do mineral em pó no concreto resultou em melhorias na trabalhabilidade e resistência do material. As informações desta revisão oferecem um panorama das técnicas de caracterização e das perspectivas de reciclagem dos rejeitos de magnetita no setor da construção civil.

The generation and disposal of foundry waste result in the need for alternatives or solutions that promote a better waste reuse in the production processes. Having this in mind, this study carried out the chemical, mineralogical and granulometric characterization of gray and nodular iron foundry wastes and evaluated their applicability in civil construction. The green sand, slag and particulate material presented, in their chemical composition, the major presence of SiO2, followed by Al2O3, K2O and Fe2O3. The mineralogical analysis revealed the presence of quartz in all residues and hematite in the slag.These three residues had particle sizes ranging from 0.002 to 0.6 mm. It was identified that the residues have great potentiality of use in the production of cement, concrete as material of the sub-base layer of pavements., A geração e a disposição de resíduos oriundos da fundição de metaisdespertam a necessidade de alternativas que promovam seu melhorreaproveitamento em processos produtivos. Assim, este estudo realizoua caracterização química, mineralógica e granulométrica de resíduosde fundição de ferro cinzento e nodular e avaliou sua aplicabilidade naconstrução civil. A areia verde, escória e material particulado apresentaramem sua composição química a presença majoritária de dióxido de silício(SiO2), além de óxido de alumínio (Al2O3), óxido de potássio (K2O) e óxidode ferro (Fe2O3). A análise mineralógica revelou a presença de quartzo emtodos os resíduos e de hematita, na escória. Os três resíduos apresentaramgranulometrias compreendidas entre 0,002 e 0,6 mm. Identificou-se que osresíduos possuem potencialidade de uso na produção de cimento, argamassase materiais cerâmicos, como substituintes parciais dos agregados miúdos doconcreto e como material da camada de sub-base de pavimentos.
