Abstract

This study investigates the impacts of the Big Five personality traits and propensity to trust on the use and writing of online reviews. Additionally, this study examines how gender moderates these impacts. Results of a survey (n = 840) show that openness to experience and conscientiousness positively influence online review use, while openness to experience and extraversion positively influence online review writing. Moreover, gender moderates the impacts of extraversion, openness to experience, and agreeableness on online review writing, with no moderating effect observed for online review use. Our findings contribute to the electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) literature and offer important practical insights for eWOM platforms.

7. Optimisation of radiocephalic arteriovenous fistula

Abstract

Each year, an estimated 5,000-6,000 patients require haemodialysis across United Kingdom (UK). This is only possible with a functional, accessible and permanent arteriovenous fistula (AVF). The current guidelines recommend, radiocephalic AVF (RACVF) to be the primary choice of fistula. Prior to the main objectives of this thesis, a UK wide (clinician based) survey was conducted to ascertain the scope of practice and Functional Maturation (FM) of RCAVF in UK. The survey demonstrated that 40% of surgeons prefer not to create RACVF (due to various factors) despite these current recommendations. In addition, current FM in the UK is around 60%, a finding which corresponds with a systematic review of the literature (comprised of exclusively UK studies). This rate of FM is 12% less than that reported internationally (72%). Therefore, it was hypothesised (null hypothesis) that FM of RCAVF could not be enhanced by optimisation of preoperative evaluation, patient selection (demographics), comorbidities, anatomical factors, operative skills and postoperative care and follow up. A methodological & prospective study, with series of retrospective analytics on n=350 RCAVF over six years from creation to their FM or failure was conducted. The traditional statistical means was also complemented by the first feasibility and applicability study, using artificial intelligence (AI) and deep learning (DL) for pattern recognition, modelling and decision tree in RCAVF stratification and formation. The outcome suggests that the traditional clinical examination for patient selection, should be complemented by the use of preoperative duplex sonography through a multidisciplinary team approach. Patient demographics and comorbidities should not be used as an exclusion criterion for RCAVF formation once the minimum diameter of cephalic vein (>1.8mm) and radial artery (2mm) has been met. Arteriovenous Ratio (AVR) of 0.8 to 1.1 creates minimal alteration in pressure and velocity of RCAVF, limiting early failure. Almost 50% of non-functioning RCAVF through early surveillance could be salvaged by well-designed algorithmic salvage (open & endovascular) techniques. Application of all these outcomes could result in a FM of 80% in clinical practice which is a major improvement on the current rate of 60%. The future role of AI and its implementation with vast dataset could enhance stratification and FM. The findings of cephalic vein and radial artery diameter from this thesis has now influenced "The National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQI)" and "European society of Vascular Surgery Guidelines". Finally, there is an international study (generated from this thesis) to gather the scope of practice (worldwide) and establish consensus.

Abstract

Abstract Focused on the assessment of the diphenhydramine hydrochloride (DPH) capabilities as an alternative to conventional and harmful industrial corrosion inhibitors, electrochemical techniques were employed. The optimum concentration of 1000 ppm was determined by molecular simulation and validated through electrochemical experiments. The results acquired from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) study showed that DPH at a concentration of 1000 ppm has a corrosion efficiency of 91.43% after 6 h immersion. The DPH molecules' orientation on the surface was assessed based on EIS predicting horizontal adsorption on the surface. Molecular simulations were done to explore the adsorption mechanism of DPH. The DPH molecules' orientation on the surface was also assessed based on computational studies confirming the horizontal adsorption predicted by EIS.

22. Smart cities for people with disabilities: a systematic literature review and future research directions.

Abstract

Smart cities are promising communities that leverage intelligent technologies to connect citizens through internet devices, thereby improving their quality of life. This is especially crucial for citizens with disabilities, who face significant challenges in urban living. This paper reviews, summarises, and synthesises the current literature on smart cities for people with disabilities. The analysis is grounded in a sociotechnical framework and the Quadruple Helix Model, with a focus on effective collaborations among various stakeholders to provide sustainable and inclusive smart cities. In examining 83 peer-reviewed articles, our literature analysis reveals that, despite the growing number of studies on smart cities, very few have explored the challenges and opportunities for people with disabilities from a socio-technical and collaborative perspective. Accordingly, we call for interdisciplinary research to understand how smart technologies should be developed, implemented, and used to address the special needs of people with disabilities and to build inclusive and technologically advanced smart cities. This study contributes to both research and practice by highlighting the underexamined area of inclusive smart cities. It provides a conceptual framework that can serve as a guideline to address and enhance the understanding of the critical role of smart cities in fostering social inclusion. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

30. The Effect of Saffron (Crocus Sativus) on Oxymetholone-induced Hepatic and Renal Injury in Rats

Abstract

Background: Oxymetholone, an anabolic-androgenic steroid, has been used to treat some diseases. The abuse of this compound, especially for muscle growth, has severe oxidative side effects on the liver and kidneys. Oxidative stress and free radicals are responsible for the development of various diseases. Phytochemicals are sources of polyphenols, flavonoids, saponins, etc. and may act as scavengers of free radicals. Saffron (Crocus sativus) has considerable antioxidant properties, which may be useful in reversing or preventing these negative effects. Methods: To evaluate the effects of saffron on the liver and kidneys degenerative changes induced by oxymetholone, 24 male Wistar rats were used. The rats were randomly divided into four groups of six rats each as: a) sham (normal saline, 40 mg/kg/day), b) saffron control (40 mg/kg/day), c) oxymetholone (50 mg/rat), and d) treatment group [saffron (40 mg/kg/day)+oxymetholone (50 mg/rat)]. The course of examination was 30 days. Results: After one month, the sham and saffron control groups had normal histological findings. The treatment group with saffron showed a significant reduction in the hepatic and renal degenerative changes induced by oxymetholone compared to those observed in group. Conclusion: Based on the histopathological results, the use of saffron produced protective effects against the degenerative changes in rats’ liver and kidneys induced by oxymetholone.

31. Blood and blood component transfusion on 30-day mortality and morbidity of infra-renal ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm

Abstract

This thesis for the first time in the literature, through a single cohort (n=82), systematic review and meta-aggregation of the data, has identified that the majority (>85%) of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm (rAAA) do not present with coagulopathy. In addition, the thesis for the first time, through a retro and prospective cohort study, has demonstrated that the hemostatic resuscitation protocols derived from military and civilian trauma for the correction of coagulopathy with a blood product ratio of one unit of packed red blood cell to one unit of fresh frozen plasma to one pool of platelet (1:1:1), contributes to increased postoperative (30-day) morbidity and mortality, especially thrombotic complications. This was attributed to different baseline demographics, pathophysiology and coagulation status. Through a comparative study, the thesis then confirms that such transfusion practice not only contributes to adverse outcomes, but also has no impact on final coagulation status of rAAAs. In addition, through a retro and prospective cohort study, a novel hematological marker (neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio) (NLR) was identified as an independent predictor of morbidity in rAAAs. This thesis was set on the background of significant research into all factors that could contribute to pathogenesis, inhibition and progression of rAAAs. This thesis concludes that the use of additional blood products (fresh frozen plasma and platelet) in hemostatic resuscitation of ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms alongside packed red blood cell is not evidence based and a single protocol derived from one cohort (military and civilian trauma) of patients does not apply to another. The use of additional products in ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysms should be tailored to the individual hematological and clinical requirements and not as a part of a set transfusion ratio (1:1:1). This thesis has resulted in a change of practice and has created a platform for further search of the optimal transfusion protocol in this cohort of patients.

Abstract

Proper mixing in microfluidic devices has been a concern since the early development stages. Acoustic micromixers (active micromixers) attract significant attention due to their high efficiency and ease of implementation. Finding the optimal geometries, structures, and characteristics of acoustic micromixers is still a challenging issue. In this study, we considered leaf-shaped obstacle(s) having a multi-lobed structure as the oscillatory part(s) of acoustic micromixers in a Y-junction microchannel. Four different types of leaf-shaped oscillatory obstacles, including 1, 2, 3, and 4-lobed structures, were defined, and their mixing performance for two fluid streams was evaluated numerically. The geometrical parameters of the leaf-shaped obstacle(s), including the number of lobes, lobes’ length, lobes’ inside angle, and lobes’ pitch angle, were analyzed, and their optimum operational values were discovered. Additionally, the effects of the placement of oscillatory obstacles in three configurations, i.e., at the junction center, on the side walls, and both, on the mixing performance were evaluated. It was found that by increasing the number and length of lobes, the mixing efficiency improved. Furthermore, the effect of the operational parameters, such as inlet velocity, frequency, and intensity of acoustic waves, was examined on mixing efficiency. Meanwhile, the occurrence of a bimolecular reaction in the microchannel was analyzed at different reaction rates. It was proven that the reaction rate has a prominent effect at higher inlet velocities.

Curriculum development is particularly challenging in computing-related disciplines as the computing industry changes more quickly than most. As information technology degrees have become relatively pervasive, some institutions that offer information systems degrees have recognized a need to develop specialist studies in information systems. This detailed case study shows the forces related to a successful implementation of new Health Informatics degrees. The case describes both an unsuccessful and then a successful attempt at essentially the same curriculum development. Although the case includes some local political factors, these represent typical considerations that a curriculum developer is likely to encounter.
