We study the star-disc interaction in the presence of the strong magnetic field ($B_\star=6.2kG$) of a slowly rotating star. This situation describes a post-merger of the spectral type B and has not been previously investigated. We perform a set of resistive and viscosity $2.5D$-magnetohydrodynamical simulations using the PLUTO code. Based on our previous work, we consider the initial gas disc density $\rho_{d0}=10^{-13}\mathrm{gcm}^{-3}$ since it describes the conditions around IRAS 17449+2320 well. We find that the fall of gas towards the star occurs in the mid-plane, and remarkably, intermittent backflow takes place in the mid-plane in all of our models for $R\geq10R_\star$. However, we do not rule out that the funnel effect may occur and cause the accretion closer to the poles. Also, when larger values of viscosity ($\alpha_\nu=1$) and stellar rotation rate ($\delta_\star=0.2$) are considered, we find that the disc exhibits a thickening which is characteristic of FS~CMa-type stellar objects. Additionally, we find that the poloidal magnetic field lines twist over short periods of time, leading to magnetic reconnection causing coronal heating that could explain the presence of the Raman lines found observationally in several FS~CMa stars. Lastly, we find the formation of several knots in the magnetic field lines near and in the mid-plane of the disc which produce perturbations in the density and velocity components, as well as the formation of shallow gaps whose position depends on the inflation of the magnetic field lines., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the dynamic evolution of gaseous region around FS~CMa post-mergers. Due to the slow rotation of a central B-type star, the dynamics is driven mainly by the magnetic field of the central star. Recent observations have allowed us to set a realistic initial conditions such as, the magnetic field value ($B_\star\approx6\times10^{3}G$), the mass of the central star ($M_\star=6M_\odot$), and the initial disc density $\rho_{d0}\in[10^{-13}\mathrm{g\,cm^{-3}},10^{-11}\mathrm{g \, cm^{-3}}] $. We use the PLUTO code to perform 2.5D-MHD simulations of thin and thick discs models. Especially relevant for the interpretation of the observed properties of FS~CMa post-mergers are the results for low-density discs, in which we find formation of a jet emerging from inner edge of the disc, as well as the formation of the so called "hot plasmoid" in the corona region. Jets are probably detected as discrete absorption components in the resonance lines of FS~CMa stars. Moreover, the magnetic field configuration in the low-density plasma region, favors the appearance of magnetocentrifugal winds from the disc. The currents toward the star created by the magnetic field may explain accidentally observed material infall. The disc structure is significantly changed due to the presence of the magnetic field. The magnetic field is also responsible for the formation of a hot corona as observed in several FS~CMa stars through the Raman lines. We outline the impact of a small two-band UV-photometry satellite mission on the field of stellar physics, magnetospheres of stars, binaries, stellar clusters, interstellar matter, and exoplanets. On specific examples of different types of stars and stellar systems, we discuss particular requirements for such satellite missions in terms of specific mission parameters such as bandpass, precision, cadence, and mission duration. We show that such a mission may provide crucial data not only for hot stars that emit most of their light in UV, but also for cool stars, where UV traces their activity. This is important, for instance, for exoplanetary studies, because the level of stellar activity influences habitability. While the main asset of the two-band UV mission rests in time-domain astronomy, an example of open clusters proves that such a mission would be important also for the study of stellar populations. Properties of the interstellar dust are best explored when combining optical and IR information with observations in UV. It is well known that dust absorbs UV radiation efficiently. Consequently, we outline how such a UV mission can be used to detect eclipses of sufficiently hot stars by various dusty objects and study disks, rings, clouds, disintegrating exoplanets or exoasteroids. Furthermore, UV radiation can be used to study the cooling of neutron stars providing information about the extreme states of matter in the interiors of neutron stars and used for mapping heated spots on their surfaces., Comment: Accepted for publication in Space Science Reviews; corrected version including comments of the referee

We present a near-UV space telescope on a ~70kg micro-satellite with a moderately fast repointing capability and a near real-time alert communication system that has been proposed in response to a call for an ambitious Czech national mission. The mission, which has recently been approved for Phase 0, A, and B1 study shall measure the brightness evolution of kilonovae, resulting from mergers of neutron stars in the near-UV band and thus it shall distinguish between different explosion scenarios. A reliable determination of the basic physical properties and variability patterns of hot emission-line stars is important for understanding the Be phenomenon and ultimately, the evolutionary stage of Be stars. This study is devoted to one of the most remarkable Be stars, V1294 Aql = HD 184279. We collected and analysed spectroscopic and photometric observations covering a time interval of about 25000 d (68 yr). We present evidence that the object is a single-line 192.9 d spectroscopic binary and estimate that the secondary probably is a hot compact object with a mass of about 1.1-1.2 solar masses. We found and documented very complicated orbital and long-term spectral, light, and colour variations, which must arise from a combination of several distinct variability patterns. Attempts at modelling them are planned for a follow-up study. Context. The eclipsing close binary UU Cas is an interacting massive double-periodic system with a gainer star partly hidden in an accretion disk. Aims. In order to study the physics of the accretion process in greater detail, along with the structure and dynamics of the circumstellar matter in the system, we supplement our previous results obtained from photometry with an analysis of the spectra of UU Cas. Methods. We collected all available spectra used in previous publications on UU Cas and we acquired new ones. The method of disentangling was applied to this set of spectra spanning the years 2008-2021. The orbital parameters were disentangled and a fit of the separated component spectra by synthetic ones has been used to determine the physical parameters of the component stars. We compared the results to models of the evolution of interacting binaries. Results. We found that in addition to the dominant role of the donor star and a weak contribution of the gainer, the line profiles are strongly influenced by the circumstellar matter. The absorption lines reveal a presence of a disk wind emanating above the orbital plane. The variability of H{\alpha} emission yields evidence of changes in the structure of the circumstellar matter on a timescale of several orbital periods.

We report the first detection of the magnetic field in a star of FS CMa type, a subgroup of objects characterized by the B[e] phenomenon. The split of magnetically sensitive lines in IRAS 17449+2320 determines the magnetic field modulus of 6.2+/-0.2 kG. Spectral lines and their variability reveal the presence of a B-type spectrum and a hot continuum source in the visible. The hot source confirms GALEX UV photometry. Because there is a lack of spectral lines for the hot source in the visible, the spectral fitting gives only the lower temperature limit of the hot source, which is 50 000 K, and the upper limit for the B-type star of 11 100 K. The V/R ratio of the H alpha line shows quasiperiodic behavior on timescale of 800 days. We detected a strong red-shifted absorption in the wings of Balmer and OI lines in some of the spectra. The absorption lines of helium and other metals show no, or very small, variations, indicating unusually stable photospheric regions for FS CMa stars. We detected two events of material infall, which were revealed to be discrete absorption components of resonance lines. The discovery of the strong magnetic field together with the Gaia measurements of the proper motion show that the most probable nature of this star is that of a post-merger object created after the leaving the binary of the birth cluster. Another possible scenario is a magnetic Ap star around Terminal-Age Main Sequence (TAMS). On the other hand, the strong magnetic field defies the hypothesis that IRAS 17449+2320 is an extreme classical Be star. Thus, IRAS 17449+2320 provides a pretext for exploring a new explanation of the nature of FS CMa stars or, at least, a group of stars with very similar spectral properties.

We present the results of the study of the close binary UU Cassiopeiae based on previously published multi wavelength photometric and spectroscopic data. Based on eclipse timings of the last 117 years, we find an improved orbital period of $\rm P_{o} = 8.519296(8)$ d. In addition, we find a long cycle of length $T$ $\sim$ 270 d in the $I_c$-band data. There is no evidence for orbital period change during the last century, suggesting that the rate of mass loss from the system or mass exchange between the stars should be small. Sporadic and rapid brightness drops of up to $\Delta$$V$ = 0.3 mag are detected during the whole orbital cycle and infrared photometry clearly suggests the presence of circumstellar matter. We model the orbital light curve of 11 published datasets fixing the mass ratio and cool star temperature from previous spectroscopic work; $q$= 0.52 and $T_c$= 22 700 K. We find a system seen at angle 74 degrees with a stellar separation of 52 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$, a temperature for the hotter star $T_h$= 30 200 $K$ and stellar masses 17.4 and 9 ${\rm M_{\odot}}$ , radii 7.0 and 16.9 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$ and surface gravities log g = 3.98 and 2.94, for the hotter and cooler star, respectively. We find an accretion disk surrounding the more massive star, with a radius of 21 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$ and vertical thickness in its outer edge of 6.5 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$, mostly occulting the hotter star. Two active regions hotter than the surrounding disk are found, one located roughly in the expected position where the stream impacts the disk and the other one in the opposite side of the disk. The eclipsing binaries are still important objects for our understanding of the universe. Especially these ones located within the more complex multiple systems can help us solving the problem of their origin and subsequent evolution of these higher order multiples. Photometry and spectroscopy spanning over more than 25 yr were used for the first complete analysis of the two bright triple systems, namely V348 And and V572 Per. The light curves in photometric filters were combined together with the radial velocities and analyzed simultaneously, yielding the precise physical parameters of the eclipsing components of these multiple systems. The system V348 And consists of two eclipsing components with its orbital period of about 27.7 days. The system is a very detached one, and both eclipses are rather narrow, lasting only about 0.016 of its period. The visual orbit of the wide pair has the period of about 87 yr. All three components of the system are probably of B8-9 spectral type, and the parallax of the system was slightly shifted to the value of 2.92 mas. On the other hand, the system V572 Per shows apsidal motion of its inner orbit, the orbital period being of about 1.2 days, while the apsidal motion of about 48 yr. The components are of A and F spectral types, while the motion with the third component around a common barycenter is only negligible. Bright Be star beta CMi has been identified as a non-radial pulsator on the basis of space photometry with the MOST satellite and also as a single-line spectroscopic binary with a period of 170.4 d. The purpose of this study is to re-examine both these findings, using numerous electronic spectra from the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, Ond\v{r}ejov Observatory, Universit\"atssterwarte Bochum, archival electronic spectra from several observatories, and also the original MOST satellite photometry. We measured the radial velocity of the outer wings of the double Halpha emission in all spectra at our disposal and were not able to confirm significant radial-velocity changes. We also discuss the problems related to the detection of very small radial-velocity changes and conclude that while it is still possible that the star is a spectroscopic binary, there is currently no convincing proof of it from the radial-velocity measurements. Wavelet analysis of the MOST photometry shows that there is only one persistent (and perhaps slightly variable) periodicity of 0.617 d of the light variations, with a double-wave light curve, all other short periods having only transient character. Our suggestion that this dominant period is the star's rotational period agrees with the estimated stellar radius, projected rotational velocity and with the orbital inclination derived by two teams of investigators. New spectral observations obtained in the whole-night series would be needed to find out whether some possibly real, very small radial-velocity changes cannot in fact be due to rapid line-profile changes., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal; 26 pages, 13 Figures

Mass exchange and mass loss in close binaries can significantly affect their evolution, but a complete self-consistent theory of these processes is still to be developed. Processes such as radiative shielding due to a~hot-spot region, or a~hydrodynamical interaction of different parts of the gas stream have been studied previously. In order to test the respective predictions, it is necessary to carry out detailed observations of binaries undergoing the largescale mass exchange, especially for those that are in the rapid transfer phase. \bla is an archetype of such a system, having a long and rich observational history. Our goal for this first study is to quantitatively estimate the geometry and physical properties of the optically thick components, namely the Roche-lobe filling mass-losing star, and the accretion disk surrounding the mass-gaining star of \blae. A series of continuum visible and NIR spectro-interferometric observations by the NPOI, CHARA/MIRC and VEGA instruments covering the whole orbit of \bla acquired during a~two-week campaign in 2013 were complemented with \ubvr\ photometric observations acquired during a three-year monitoring of the system. We included NUV and FUV observations from OAO~A-2, IUE, and Voyager satellites.

V746 Cas is known to be a triple system composed of a close binary with an alternatively reported period of either 25.4d or 27.8d and a third component in a 62000d orbit. The object was also reported to exhibit multiperiodic light variations with periods from 0.83d to 2.50d, on the basis of which it was classified as a slowly pulsating B star. Interest in further investigation of this system was raised by the detection of a variable magnetic field. Analysing spectra from four instruments, earlier published radial velocities, and several sets of photometric observations, we arrived at the following conclusions: (1) The optical spectrum is dominated by the lines of the B-type primary (Teff1~16500(100) K), contributing 70% of the light in the optical region, and a slightly cooler B tertiary (Teff3~13620(150) K). The lines of the low-mass secondary are below our detection threshold; we estimate that it could be a normal A or F star. (2) We resolved the ambiguity in the value of the inner binary period and arrived at a linear ephemeris of T_super.conj.=HJD 2443838.78(81)+25.41569(42)xE. (3) The intensity of the magnetic field undergoes a~sinusoidal variation in phase with one of the known photometric periods, namely 2.503867(19)d, which we identify with the rotational period of the tertiary. (4) The second photometric 1.0649524(40)d period is identified with the rotational period of the B-type primary, but this interpretation is much less certain and needs further verification. (5) If our interpretation of photometric periods is confirmed, the classification of the object as a slowly pulsating B star should be revised. (6) Applying an N-body model to different types of available observational data, we constrain the orbital inclination of the inner orbit to ~60 deg to 85 deg even in the absence of eclipses, and estimate the probable properties of the triple system and its components., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Eclipsing binaries remain crucial objects for our understanding of the universe. In particular, those that are components of multiple systems can help us solve the problem of the formation of these systems. Analysis of the radial velocities together with the light curve produced for the first time precise physical parameters of the components of the multiple systems V773 Cas, QS Aql, and BR Ind. Their visual orbits were also analyzed, which resulted in slightly improved orbital elements. What is typical for all these systems is that their most dominant source is the third distant component. The system V773 Cas consists of two similar G1-2V stars revolving in a circular orbit and a more distant component of the A3V type. Additionally, the improved value of parallax was calculated to be 17.6 mas. Analysis of QS Aql resulted in the following: the inner eclipsing pair is composed of B6V and F1V stars, and the third component is of about the B6 spectral type. The outer orbit has high eccentricity of about 0.95, and observations near its upcoming periastron passage between the years 2038 and 2040 are of high importance. Also, the parallax of the system was derived to be about 2.89 mas, moving the star much closer to the Sun than originally assumed. The system BR Ind was found to be a quadruple star consisting of two eclipsing K dwarfs orbiting each other with a period of 1.786 days; the distant component is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of about 6 days. We analyse spectroscopic observations of the B[e] star HD 50138 (MWC 158, V743 Mon, or IRAS 06491-0654), a member of the FS CMa group, obtained over the last twenty years. Four different epochs are identified in the observational data, where the variability of the spectral features is substantially different. Additionally, two long periods of (3 000 +/- 500) and (5 000 +/- 1000) days are found in the variations of the equivalent widths of the H alpha and [OI] 6300 A lines and radial velocities of the H alpha line violet peak. Modest signatures of a regular period of ~34 days in the radial velocities of the H alpha red peak and H beta central depression are found in the season 2013/2014. The H alpha V/R changes indicate a periodicity of ~50 days. The correlations between individual spectral features significantly restricts the model of the object and suggest that it is most likely a binary system with a highly distorted disc with spiral arms around the primary component. At the same time, no obvious signs of the secondary component has been found in the object's spectrum.

The viscous decretion disk (VDD) model is able to explain most of the currently observable properties of the circumstellar disks of Be stars. However, more stringent tests, focusing on reproducing multitechnique observations of individual targets via physical modeling, are needed to study the predictions of the VDD model under specific circumstances. In the case of nearby, bright Be star $\beta$ CMi, these circumstances are a very stable low-density disk and a late-type (B8Ve) central star. The aim is to test the VDD model thoroughly, exploiting the full diagnostic potential of individual types of observations, in particular, to constrain the poorly known structure of the outer disk if possible, and to test truncation effects caused by a possible binary companion using radio observations. We use the Monte Carlo radiative transfer code HDUST to produce model observables, which we compare with a very large set of multitechnique and multiwavelength observations that include ultraviolet and optical spectra, photometry covering the interval between optical and radio wavelengths, optical polarimetry, and optical and near-IR (spectro)interferometry. Due to the absence of large scale variability, data from different epochs can be combined into a single dataset. A parametric VDD model with radial density exponent of $n$ = 3.5, which is the canonical value for isothermal flaring disks, is found to explain observables typically formed in the inner disk, while observables originating in the more extended parts favor a shallower, $n$ = 3.0, density falloff. Modeling of radio observations allowed for the first determination of the physical extent of a Be disk (35$^{+10}_{-5}$ stellar radii), which might be caused by a binary companion. We report the results of a long-term spectroscopic monitoring of the FS\,CMa type object MWC\,728. We found that it is a binary system with a B5 Ve (T$_{\rm eff}$ = 14000$\pm$1000 K) primary and a G8 III type (T$_{\rm eff} \sim$ 5000 K) secondary. Absorption line positions of the secondary vary with a semi-amplitude of $\sim$20 km/s and a period of 27.5 days. The system's mass function is 2.3$\times10^{-2}$ M$_\odot$, and its orbital plane is $13^{\circ}-15^{\circ}$ tilted from the plane of the sky. The primary's $v \sin i \sim$110 km/s combined with this tilt implies that it rotates at a nearly breakup velocity. We detected strong variations of the Balmer and He I emission-line profiles on timescales from days to years. This points to a variable stellar wind of the primary in addition to the presence of a circum-primary gaseous disk. The strength of the absorption-line spectrum along with the optical and near-IR continuum suggest that the primary contributes $\sim$60% of the $V$--band flux, the disk contributes $\sim$30%, and the secondary $\sim$10%. The system parameters, along with the interstellar extinction, suggest a distance of $\sim$1 kpc, that the secondary does not fill its Roche lobe, and that the companions' mass ratio is $q \sim$0.5. Overall, the observed spectral variability and the presence of a strong IR-excess are in agreement with a model of a close binary system that has undergone a non-conservative mass-transfer., Comment: 13 pages, 16 figures, 5 tables, accepted in The Astrophysical Journal

Reliable determination of the basic physical properties of hot emission-line binaries with Roche-lobe filling secondaries is important for developing the theory of mass exchange in binaries. It is a very hard task, however, which is complicated by the presence of circumstellar matter in these systems. So far, only a small number of systems with accurate values of component masses, radii, and other properties are known. Here, we report the first detailed study of a new representative of this class of binaries, BR CMi, based on the analysis of radial velocities and multichannel photometry from several observatories, and compare its physical properties with those for other well-studied systems. BR CMi is an ellipsoidal variable seen under an intermediate orbital inclination of ~51 degrees, and it has an orbital period of 12.919059(15) d and a circular orbit. We used the disentangled component spectra to estimate the effective temperatures 9500(200) K and 4655(50) K by comparing them with model spectra. They correspond to spectral types B9.5e and G8III. We also used the disentangled spectra of both binary components as templates for the 2-D cross-correlation to obtain accurate RVs and a reliable orbital solution. Some evidence of a secular period increase at a rate of 1.1+/-0.5 s per year was found. This, together with a very low mass ratio of 0.06 and a normal mass and radius of the mass gaining component, indicates that BR CMi is in a slow phase of the mass exchange after the mass-ratio reversal. Investigating long series of spectral and photometric observations, we found that the orbital elements of epsilon Aur are subject to much larger uncertainties than usually believed. The H alpha emission is found to move basically with the F primary but its exact location should still be investigated. We also find strong additional absorption and large reddening of the object near the third contact during the eclipse. We present results of nearly six years of spectroscopic observations of the B[e] star V2028 Cyg. The presence of the cold-type absorption lines combined with a hot-type spectrum indicate the binarity of this object. Since B[e] stars are embedded in an extended envelope, the usage of common stellar atmosphere models for the analysis is quite inappropriate. Therefore, we focus on the analysis of the long-term spectral line variations in order to determine the nature of this object. We present the time dependences of the equivalent width and radial velocities of the H alpha line, [O I] 6300 A, Fe II 6427, 6433, and 6456 A lines. The bisector variations and line intensities are shown for the H alpha line. The radial velocities are also measured for the absorption lines of the K component. No periodic variation is found. The observed data show correlations between the measured quantities, which can be used in future modelling.

Context. 65 UMa belongs to rather small group of stellar systems of higher multiplicity, whose inner and outer orbits are well-known. Methods: Photometric, spectroscopic, and interferometric data were analyzed, revealing the basic physical properties of the system 65 UMa. A disentangling technique is used to perform the spectra decomposition. This combined approach allows us to study the long-term period changes in the system, identifying the period variation due to the motion on the visual orbit, in addition to a short-term modulation. Results: We find that the system contains one more component, hence 65 UMa is a sextuple hierarchical system. The most inner pair of components consists of an eclipsing binary orbiting around a barycenter on a circular orbit, both components being almost identical of spectral type about A7. This pair orbits on an eccentric orbit around a barycenter, and the third component orbits with a period of about 640 days. This motion is reflected in the period variation in the minima times of the eclipsing pair, as well as in the radial velocities of the primary, secondary, and tertiary components. Moreover, this system orbits around a barycenter with the distant component resolved interferometrically, whose period is of about 118 years. Two more distant components (4" and 63") are also probably gravitationally bound to the system. The nodal period of the eclipsing-pair orbit is on the order of only a few centuries, which makes this system even more interesting for a future prospective detection of changing the depths of minima. Conclusions: We identify a unique solution of the system 65 UMa, decomposing the individual components and even shifting the system to higher multiplicity. The study of this kind of multiple can help us to understand the origin of stellar systems. A detailed analysis of more than 800 electronic high-resolution spectra of gamma Cas, which were obtained during a time interval of over 6000 days (16.84 yrs) at several observatories, documents the smooth variations in the density and/or extend of its circumstellar envelope. We found a clear anticorrelation between the peak intensity and FWHM of the H alpha emission, which seems to agree with recent models of such emission lines. The main result of this study is a confirmation of the binary nature of the object, determination of a reliable linear ephemeris T_{min.RV} = HJD (2452081.9$\pm$0.6) + (203.52$\pm$0.08)*E, and a rather definitive set of orbital elements. We clearly demonstrated that the orbit is circular within the limits of accuracy of our measurements and has a semi-amplitude of radial-velocity curve of 4.30$\pm$0.09 (km/s). No trace of the low-mass secondary was found. The time distribution of our spectra does not allow a reliable investigation of rapid spectral variations, which are undoubtedly present in the spectra. We postpone this investigation for a future study, based on series of dedicated whole-night spectral observations.

We studied both components of a slightly overlooked visual binary HR 1847 spectroscopically to determine its basic physical and orbital parameters. Basic stellar parameters were determined by comparing synthetic spectra to the observed echelle spectra, which cover both the optical and near-IR regions. New observations of this system used the Ond\v{r}ejov and Rozhen 2-m telescopes and their coud\'e spectrographs. Radial velocities from individual spectra were measured and then analysed with the code {\FOTEL} to determine orbital parameters. The spectroscopic orbit of HR 1847A is presented for the first time. It is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with a B-type primary, a period of 719.79 days, and a highly eccentric orbit with e=0.7. We confirmed that HR 1847B is a Be star. Its H\alpha emission significantly decreased from 2003 to 2008. Both components have a spectral type B7-8 and luminosity class IV-V., Comment: Astronomy and Astrophysics, accepted

Astrophysical objects frequently exhibit some irregularities or complex behaviour in their light curves. We focus primarily on hot stars, where both radial and non-radial pulsations are observed. One of the primary research goals is to determine physical parameters of stellar pulsations by analyzing their light curves or spectra, focusing on periodic or quasiperiodic behaviour. We analyse the feasibility of classical methods for period searches in a nonlinear chaotic system, such as the R\"ossler system, where a period does not exist at all. As an astrophysical application of the chaotic system, we utilize a simple model of stellar pulsation with two different sets of parameters corresponding to periodic and chaotic behaviour. For both models we create a synthetic signal, and then apply widely used methods for period finding, such as the phase dispersion method and periodograms. For comparison, a quasi-periodic signal is employed as well. The period analysis indicates periods even for the chaotic signal. Such periods are apparently spurious. This implies that it is very problematic to distinguish chaotic and quasiperiodic process by such an analysis only., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

We verify the nature of emission-line stars in the field of the open cluster NGC 6910. % Spectroscopy in the H-alpha region was obtained. Raw CCD frames of spectra of all stars fainter than V = 9 mag observed by us are significantly affected by nebular emission originating in the surrounding HII region IC 1318. After careful data reduction and subtraction of the nebular radiation we succeeded in obtaining reliable stellar spectra. We confirm that the star NGC 6910 37 is a Be star, and we have corrected the classification of V1973 Cyg from an Ae star to a normal A type star. Since the diffuse interstellar bands do not appear in the spectrum of this star while being present in the other stars we observed, we confirm that V1973 Cyg is a foreground object with respect to IC 1318 and NGC 6910. We also find that the H-alpha line in HD 194279 has a P Cygni profile and the H-alpha line profile is variable in HD 229196., Comment: accepted to Astronomy and Astrophysics

A new method for the formal solution of the 2D radiative transfer equation in axial symmetry in the presence of arbitrary velocity fields is presented. The combination of long and short characteristics methods is used to solve the radiative transfer equation. We include the velocity field in detail using the Local Lorentz Transformation. This allows us to obtain a significantly better description of the photospheric region, where the gradient of the global velocity is too small for the Sobolev approximation to be valid. We present an analysis of new spectroscopic observations of the bright Be star kappa Dra obtained at the Ondrejov observatory during 1992 - 2003 and UBV photometric observations secured at several observatories. The fundamental stellar parameters have been obtained from a comparison with a grid of NLTE model atmospheres. The best fit was found for Teff=14000K, log g = 3.5, and v sin i = 170km/s. These values together with a Hipparcos parallax lead to a stellar mass M=4.8+-0.8 M_solar and radius R=6.4+-0.5 R_solar. Long-term variations of kappa Dra were analysed using measurements of equivalent widths, central intensities, peak intensities of emission lines and emission peak velocity differences for H-alpha, H-beta, H-gamma, H-delta, and some helium, silicon, and iron lines. It turned out that the previously reported period of 23 years in the variation of the emission strength is probably a cyclic, not a strictly periodic phenomenon. An attempt to find out a period from all available records of the H-beta emission strength led to a value of 8044+-167 days (22.0 years) but the phase plots show that each cycle has a different shape and length. For the moment, the nature and origin of the disk around kappa Dra still remains unknown. From the comparison of the electronic spectra obtained at different phases of the long-term cycle and synthetic spectra it appears that there are no detectable changes in the photospheric part of the Balmer lines related to variations in the Balmer emission strength which could be attributed to an extended photosphere corresponding to inner parts of the disk, optically thick in continuum., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics; 26 pages

An analysis of accurate radial velocities (RVs) of the Be star gamma Cas from 295 Reticon spectrograms secured between October 1993 and May 2000 allowed us to prewhiten the RVs for the long-term changes and to obtain the first orbital RV curve of this star. The orbital period is 203d59 and the orbit has an eccentricity of 0.26. The orbital motion is detectable even in the published velocities, based on photographic spectra. This implies that gamma Cas is a primary component of a spectroscopic binary. The secondary has a mass of about 1 solar mass, appropriate for a white dwarf or a neutron star, but it could also be a normal late-type dwarf. The ultimate solution of the dispute whether the observed X-ray emission is associated with the secondary or with the primary will need further dedicated studies., Comment: LaTeX file, 5 Figures in eps files, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics Letters
