Commissioning of the entire European XFEL started early 2017. More than 300 button-electrode type beam position monitors (BPMs) are used in its cold Linac and warm beam transfer lines. Signal processing in the BPM RF front-end (RFFE) electronics employs signal stretching by chirp filtering, switchable gain stages, digital step attenuators, and peak detection. In this paper we present details on RF front-end production tests, calibration, and BPM beam commissioning results. Furthermore, a calibration pulser circuit that is built into each BPM electronics is presented. The setup and algorithms for production calibration of all RFFEs are described. Finally, resolution measurements obtained by correlation among all XFEL BPMs (including cavity and re-entrant types) are presented, confirming that the system can be used for orbit correction and transmission measurement down to bunch charges of a few pico-Coulombs., Proceedings of the 6th Int. SwissFEL is free electron laser facility designed to produce FEL radiation at wavelengths from 0.1 to 5 nm. The beam commissioning of the hard X-ray undulator line ("Aramis") started 10/2016, and first lasing was observed in 12/2016. Presently, a 2nd undulator line ("Athos") for soft X-rays is being constructed, with 1st beam scheduled for mid 2019. In the injector, linac and beam transfer lines, 95 low-Q cavity BPMs operating at 3.3 GHz are used that were designed to support the future two-bunch operation mode with 28 ns bunch spacing and 100 Hz repetition rate. The undulator lines will only be operated with single bunches by means of a fast beam distribution kicker system, and were thus equipped with high-Q cavity BPMs operating at 4.9 GHz. The BPMs are not only used for beam trajectory optimization, but e.g. also for beam energy measurements (using standard cavity BPMs in the bunch compressors and beam dumps), beam charge and transmission measurements, or improvement of the performance of other monitors (e.g. wire scanners for profile measurement). SwissFEL is a free electron laser user facility at the Paul Scherrer Institute in Villigen, Switzerland designed to provide FEL radiation at photon energies ranging from 0.2 to 12 keV. Beam commissioning of the hard x-ray line ARAMIS has started in October 2016 and lasing at 300 eV was achieved in May 2017. First pilot user experiments at photon energies ≥ 2 keV are foreseen for the end of 2017. This contribution comprehends commissioning results and first operational experience of various diagnostics systems, such as beam position monitors, charge and loss monitors as well as transverse profile measurements with screens, wire scanners and synchrotron radiation monitors. It also provides information about sliced beam parameters using a transverse deflector and shows first results from the BC-1 compression monitor and measurements with the electron bunch arrival time monitors., Proceedings of the 6th Int. SwissFEL is a 5.8GeV free electron laser facility presently under construction at PSI. The electron beam position will be measured by three types of cavity beam position monitors. For the injector, linac and beam transfer lines, low-Q 3.3GHz cavity BPMs with 38mm and 16mm aperture (CBPM38 and CBPM16) will be used to measure the position and charge of two bunches with 28ns spacing individually. A fast kicker system distributes each bunch to a different undulator line, where 4.9GHz high-Q cavity BPMs with 8mm aperture (CBPM8) are used in the undulator intersections. The production of the CBPM38 pickups is finished, while the CBPM16 production is in progress. For CBPM8, a prototype pickup has been successfully tested, and a 2nd pre-series prototype with reduced dark-current sensitivity is currently in production. The development of the common 3.3GHz CBPM electronics for CBPM38 and CBPM16 is finished, while the CBPM8 electronics is currently in the prototyping phase. The European XFEL (E-XFEL) will have a transverse intra bunch train feedback system (IBFB) that is capable of correcting the beam position of individual bunches in the ~650us long bunch train, with a minimal bunch spacing of 222ns. The IBFB measures the beam positions with high-resolution cavity BPMs, and corrects the position of each bunch via stripline kicker magnets driven by class AB solid-state RF power amplifiers. The production of the IBFB BPM pickups is finished, and a pre-series version of the low-latency BPM electronics, including firmware and software, has been successfully tested with beam. After successful production and tests of prototypes, the series production of IBFB kicker magnets and RF power amplifiers is in progress. The IBFB feedback electronics hardware development is mainly finished, while firmware and software development is still in progress. For SwissFEL electron beam diagnostics, we combine application-specific detectors and front-end electronics with a common solution for digitization, interfacing and FPGA-based digital signal processing. Many key components and standards we use were initially developed by PSI for the European XFEL BPM system, but are equally suited for a broad range of SwissFEL diagnostics systems with little or no modifications. Examples are e.g. the FPGA signal processing hardware and firmware/software, ADC and DAC boards, interface boards or peak detection front-end electronics. By following a modular generic hardware and firmware/software design approach, we can cover a larger number of different monitor types with moderate development effort. Applications of our generic platform include BPMs, bunch length monitors, beam arrival time monitors, beam loss monitors, and digital laser phase locked loops (PLLs). The injector of the European XFEL is in operation since December 2015. It includes, beside the gun and the accelerating section, containing 1.3 and a 3.9 GHz accelerating module, a variety of standard diagnostics systems specially designed for this facility. With very few exceptions, all types of diagnostics systems are installed in the injector. Therefore the operation of the injector is served to validate and prove the diagnostics characteristics for the complete European XFEL. Most of the standard diagnostics has been available for the start of beam operation and showed the evidence of first beam along the beam line. In the following months the diagnostics has been optimized and used for improvements of beam quality. First operational experiences and results from the standard beam diagnostics in the injector of the European XFEL will be reported in this contribution., Proceedings of the 5th Int. The paper presents an idea, design and realization of a gigabit, optoelectronic synchronous massive data concentrator for the LLRF control system for FLASH and XFEL superconducting accelerators and lasers. The design bases on a central, large, programmable FPGA VirtexIIPro circuit by Xilinx and on eight commercial optoelectronic transceivers. There were implemented peripheral devices for embedded PowerPC block like: memory and Ethernet. The SIMCON 4.0 module was realized as a single, standard EURO-6HE board with VXI/VME-bus. Hardware implementation was described for the most important functional blocks. Construction solutions were presented.

TESLA Reports 2005 32 pp. (2005)., The note describes integrated system of hardware controller and simulator of theresonant superconducting, narrowband niobium cavity, originally considered for the TTF and TESLA in DESY, Hamburg (now predicted for the VUV and X-Ray FEL). The controller bases on a programmable circuit Xilinx VirtexII V3000 embedded on a PCB XtremeDSP Development Kit by Nallatech. The FPGA circuit configuration was done in the VHDL language. The internal hardware multiplication components, present in Virtex II chips, were used, to improve the floating point calculation efficiency. The implementation was achievedof a device working in the real time, according to the demands of the LLRF control system forthe TESLA Test Facility. The device under consideration will be referred to as superconducting cavity (SCCav) SIMCON throughout this work. This document is intended to be used by end users and operators. It describes step by step how to install SIMCON in specific configuration, how and what software to copy to computer. There is described set of basic Matlab functions for developers of control algorithms. This paper also contains brief description how to use Matlab function of one algorithmwith its graphic user panels.

TESLA Reports 2005 33 pp. (2005)., The paper describes design and practical realization of low and high level software for laboratory purposes to control FPGA-based LLRF electronic equipment for TESLA. There is presented a universal solution for particular functional devices of the control system with FPGA chips. The paper describes architecture of software layers and programming solutions of hardware communication based on the proprietary Internal Interface (II) technology. Such a solution was used for the Superconducting Cavity Controller and Simulator (SIMCON) for TESLA experiment (Test Facility) in DESY. The examples of the build and tested software blocks were given in this paper. This documentation is a unity with TESLA Reports published in 2004 by the Elhep and describing the SIMCON hardware, ver.1.0. The paper was written in a form of a User’s Manual.

TESLA Reports 2005 18 pp. (2005)., The paper describes the concept and realization of the DOOCS control software for FPGAbasedTESLA cavity controller and simulator (SIMCON). It bases on universal softwarecomponents, created for laboratory purposes and used in MATLAB based controlenvironment. These modules have been recently adapted to the DOOCS environment toensure a unified software to hardware communication model. The presented solution can bealso used as a general platform for control algorithms development. The proposed interfacesbetween MATLAB and DOOCS modules allow to check the developed algorithm in theoperation environment before implementation in the FPGA. As the examples two systemshave been presented.

The paper describes design, construction and initial measurements of an eight channelelectronic LLRF device predicted for building of the control system for the VUV-FELaccelerator at DESY (Hamburg). The device, referred in the paper to as the SIMCON 3.0 (fromthe SC cavity simulator and controller) consists of a 16 layer, VME size, PCB, a large FPGAchip (VirtexII-4000 by Xilinx), eight fast ADCs and four DACs (by Analog Devices). To ourknowledge, the proposed device is the first of this kind for the accelerator technology in whichthere was achieved (the FPGA based) DSP latency below 200 ns. With the optimized datatransmission system, the overall LLRF system latency can be as low as 500 ns. The SIMCON3.0 sub-system was applied for initial tests with the ACC1 module of the VUV FEL accelerator(eight channels) and with the CHECHIA test stand (single channel), both at the DESY. Thepromising results with the SIMCON 3.0. encouraged us to enter the design of SIMCON 3.1.possessing 10 measurement and control channels and some additional features to be reported inthe next technical note. SIMCON 3.0. is a modular solution, while SIMCON 3.1. will be anintegrated board of the all-in-one type. Two design approaches - modular and all-in-one, afterbranching off in this version of the Simcon, will be continued.
