Abstract

The tax exemption of interest revenues and the high level of professional secrecy were the unique selling points of Luxembourg for the German banking community. From the 1960s to the 1990s, they were the main causes for the rise of Luxembourg to one of the biggest euromarket places. The government of Luxembourg used these institutional factors to foster and accelerate the economic transformation from an industrial to a post-industrial country. The German banks did not reduce or even discontinue their presence in Luxembourg after the end of tax exemption and strict banking secrecy. Instead, they specialized on syndicated loans, treasury functions and Private Wealth Management for wealthy clients.

Abstract

Die rasch wachsende Zahl von Urlaubsreisen war in der frühen Bundesrepublik eng mit dem Durchbruch der Pauschalreise zum Massenkonsumgut verbunden. Die ökonomische Transaktionskostentheorie hilft, die Ursachen dieses Prozesses zu verstehen. In den 1960er-Jahren entwickelte sich die Pauschalreise zum Motor des Massentourismus, weil sie besonders die Organisation einer Auslandsreise stark vereinfachte. Dennoch blieben traditionelle schichtenspezifische Unterschiede im Reiseverhalten bis in die 1970er-Jahre bestehen. Wie bereits in der Vorkriegszeit waren die neuen Mittelschichten die Träger eines modernen, konsumorientierten Freizeitverhaltens, das in der bundesdeutschen Wohlstandsgesellschaft der 1960er-Jahre seine soziokulturelle Vorbildwirkung entfalten konnte und allmählich zur selbstverständlichen Praxis wurde. Der Aufsatz analysiert die Geschäftsmodelle der großen Reiseveranstalter, liefert statistische Angaben zur wachsenden Popularität von Pauschalreisen und verdeutlicht die Sehnsucht der Bundesbürger nach dem sonnigen Süden., In the early Federal Republic of Germany, the growing number of vacation trips went hand in hand with the breakthrough of the package tour. The economic theory of transaction costs helps to explain this process. In the 1960s, the package tour considerably simplified vacations abroad and became the driving force of mass tourism. Despite this, traditional social differences in travel patterns persisted until the 1970s. As in the pre-war era, the new middle classes were the vanguard of modern consumerist leisure. This new consumerist pattern determined role models in the affluent society of the 1960s and gradually established norms of social behaviour. This article analyses the business strategies of the big travel companies, provides statistical data about the growing popularity of the package tour and explains the German longing for the Mediterranean.
