Abstract

We report high resolution x-ray diffraction measurements of (Ga,Mn)As and (Ga,Mn)(As,P) epilayers. We observe a structural anisotropy in the form of stacking faults which are present in the (111) and (11-1) planes and absent in the (-111) and (1-11) planes. The stacking faults produce no macroscopic strain. They occupy 0.01 - 0.1 per cent of the epilayer volume. Full-potential density functional calculations evidence an attraction of Mn_Ga impurities to the stacking faults. We argue that the enhanced Mn density along the common [1-10] direction of the stacking fault planes produces sufficiently strong [110]/[1-10] symmetry breaking mechanism to account for the in-plane uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy of these ferromagnetic semiconductors., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

13. Topographic wetness index as a proxy for soil moisture:the importance of flow-routing algorithm and grid resolution

Abstract

The Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) is a commonly used proxy for soil moisture. The predictive capability of TWI is influenced by the flow-routing algorithm and the resolution of the Digital Elevation Model (DEM) that TWI is derived from. Here, we examine the predictive capability of TWI using 11 flow-routing algorithms at DEM resolutions 1–30 m. We analyze the relationship between TWI and field-quantified soil moisture using statistical modeling methods and 5,200 study plots with over 46 000 soil moisture measurements. In addition, we test the sensitivity of the flow-routing algorithms against vertical height errors in DEM at different resolutions. The results reveal that the overall predictive capability of TWI was modest. The highest r² (23.7%) was reached using a multiple-flow-direction algorithm at 2 m resolution. In addition, the test of sensitivity against height errors revealed that the multiple-flow-direction algorithms were also more robust against DEM errors than single-flow-direction algorithms. The results provide field-evidence indicating that at its best TWI is a modest proxy for soil moisture and its predictive capability is influenced by the flow-routing algorithm and DEM resolution. Thus, we encourage careful evaluation of algorithms and resolutions when using TWI as a proxy for soil moisture.

Abstract

Objective: The secular trend was observed during the 20th century as an important biomedical process, manifested by generalized acceleration. The main goal of the transversal research was to compare the body height, weight and weight-height ratios of boys and girls aged 6–14 years from the period 2012–2015 with reference data of the 6th Nation-wide Anthropological Survey of Children and Adolescents 2001 in the Czech Republic and with research from 1895. Methods: Body height and weight were measured by standardized anthropometry methods in a group of 4031 probands (2050 boys, 1981 girls) aged 6 to 14 years. BMI (kg/m2) and the corpulence (g/cm) indices were calculated based on measured body height and weight. One-sample t-test was used to perform statistical evaluation of the parameters. Results: The body height of boys and girls aged 6–14 years is consistent with that from the 6th Nation-wide Anthropological Survey 2001. The body weight and BMI of girls are consistent with the reference data, but boys aged 11 to 14 years have been found to have significantly higher weight and BMI compared to boys in 2001. Comparison of body height, weight and corpulence index of boys and girls aged 6–14 years between 1895 and 2015 indicated that the monitored group of boys and girls shows significantly higher average values and higher year-on-year gains in body height, weight and corpulence index (g/cm) in all age categories. Conclusion: The average body height values for boys and girls aged 6–14 years from 2012–2015 are consistent with 2001 reference values which points to a continuing deceleration, even to a halt, of the positive secular trend in body height in our population. No statistically significant differences in body weight and BMI were found in girls. However the higher mean body weight and BMI values, when compared to 2001 reference data, indicate an increasing prevalence of overweight and obesity in the current population of boys. Abstract

Introduction: The study is focused on the description of stress management strategies in students of general nurse and paramedic study programmes. Stress is an integral and everyday part of these two occupations. Constant changes, patient care or even life-saving procedures that, despite all efforts, end in death, all these events cause over-limit and long-term stress. Objectives: This study aims to describe the differences in the use of positive and negative coping strategies in students of general nurse and paramedic, including comparison with the population standard. Methods: Cross-sectional questionnaire survey by SVF-78. The sample of respondents consisted of 74 students of the paramedic and 50 students of the general nurse. Results: Statistical processing of the results revealed that there was a statistically significant difference in the overall use of strategies between general nurse and paramedic (p = 0.005). The results are the same in the use of positive strategies, but in the use of negative strategies, they differ in favour of paramedics (p = 0.001). However, both fields show higher scores than the population standard (p = 0.003 resp. p = 0.001). Conclusion: Although the results show that medical students have well-developed coping strategies of stress towards the general population, a closer examination revealed that students of nursing used more negative strategies, especially escape from the problem, inability to detach and feel helpless. Abstract

In an attempt to contribute to understanding of structure-property relationship in ferroelectric relaxor SrBaNbO, we studied X-ray diffuse scattering for compositions with x = 0.35 and x = 0.81 at room temperature. Within signal-rich reciprocal-space images, features related to (i) local deformation due to chemical inhomogeneity, (ii) incommensurate modulation and (iii) fluctuation of polarization have been identified. There are substantial differences between the two compositions, some of which can be straightforwardly attributed to different states of ferroelectric ordering in these materials. In the Sr-rich composition, we have observed additional features in the form of -oriented streaks on planes. They indicate that transverse correlation of uniaxial polarization is anisotropic. At the same time, the fact that streaks appear also on the superlattice planes raises the question whether the modulation and polarization order parameter are interrelated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective: The last 50 years in Poland has been a period of radical economic and demographic transformations. The deep economic crisis in 1980-1994 particularly affected people living in rural areas, especially in Pomerania, where for several years the net income of rural households fell by more than 40% year-on-year. This research aimed at analysing the prevalence of abnormal weight and the impact of various socioeconomic factors on the children's development. Methods: This paper presents the results of 3,262 children aged 7-9 years from two rural schools in Central Pomerania examined in years 1978-2005. Measurement of body weight and height were used to calculate each child's BMI, then according to the criteria of the International Obesity Task Force, were allocated to one of four weight status categories: underweight, normal BMI, overweight and obesity. The intergroup differences in unrelated qualitative variables were estimated using the F2 test with the analysis of the odds ratio, and the effect of the socioeconomic factors on the prevalence of abnormal children's weight status was analysed with the Mantel-Haenszel test. Results: The study revealed that the number of children with abnormal weight status is increasing over time. The greatest rise of overweight and obese children was found between 1998 and 2005 (from 2.58% to 8.4%, p=0.002 among boys, and from 11.9% to 19.27%, p<0.0001 among girls). Simultaneously with the increasing of overweight and obese there was also an increase in the number of underweight children (from 6.64% to 14.8%, p=0.0003 among boys and from 9.46% to 16.08%, p=0.005, among girls). This trend has only recently been stopped.Conclusion: To control and ultimately stop the continuing problems related to abnormal body weight, effective and well-coordinated measures have to be taken.
