Many studies have been conducted on the selective inhibition of human monoamine oxidase B (hMAO-B) enzyme using benzylamine-sulphonamide derivatives. Using various chemical modifications on BB-4h, which was reported previously by our team and showed a significant level of MAO-B inhibition, novel benzylamine-sulphonamide derivatives were designed, synthesised, and their MAO inhibition potentials were evaluated. Among the tested derivatives, compounds 4i and 4t achieved IC50 values of 0.041 ± 0.001 µM and 0.065 ± 0.002 µM, respectively. The mechanism of hMAO-B inhibition by compounds 4i and 4t was studied using Lineweaver–Burk plot. The nature of inhibition was also determined to be non-competitive. Cytotoxicity tests were conducted and compounds 4i and 4t were found to be non-toxic. Molecular docking studies were also carried out for compound 4i, which was found as the most potent agent, within hMAO-B catalytic site.

WOS: 000375222100028, The aim of this study is to produce a digital contamination map which is interactively rectified with a database, projected and scaled. For this reason, a detailed investigation was conducted for an understanding of contamination dispersal characteristics in terms of the contribution of heavy metal concentrations, such as mg/kg of Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn in a city center. CIAPRG Methodology (Contribution Independent of Amount through Positional Recoding and Grading) has been developed and used for the first time in this study by the authors in order to constitute a map of total heavy metal contamination distribution characteristics. Heavy metals from fifteen soil sample points, which were situated at different locations in the study area, were collected for chemical analysis. Data obtained by the chemical analysis was inserted into CIAPRG methodology. The majority of total heavy metal contribution is shown to be based on Cu, Mn and Ni. The effects of the contribution to pollution values which were recoded and graded, can be shown in relation to buildings, independent of the quantity of pollutant within the context of CIAPRG methodology. The resulting map designated that the mid and south-western parts of the study area were more intensive than the other parts in terms of heavy metal contamination. The graded contaminator values for soil and roadside dust were together compared with graded values for soil graded contaminator values, and roadside dust graded contaminator values, separately, using independent sample t tests with the results being interpreted.

Yün (WO), konfor ve mekanik özelliklerin iyileştirilmesi için, genellikle poliamid 6.6(PA) ile belirli oranlarda karıştırılarak kullanılmaktadır. Bu tip yünlü döşemelik kumaşlar sağladıkları yüksek konfor nedeniyle özellikle uçak koltuklarında tercih edilmektedir. Ancak yanma dayanımı uçak malzemelerinde mutlaka olması gereken bir özelliktir ve yasal kurallarla düzenlenmiştir. Malzemenin yanma davranışı bileşime önemli oranda bağlıdır. Yün/poliamid karışımlı kumaşlar bu gereksinimleri karşılayamadık-larından güç tutuşur apre işlemlerinden sonra uçaklarda kullanılırlar. Günümüzde yün ve yün karışımlı kumaşlara etkin güç tutuşur özellik kazandıran yenilikçi aprelere ihtiyaç bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada %100 WO ve WO/PA karışımlı kumaşların (%88,6 WO/ %11,4 PA ve %78,5 WO/%21,5 PA) yanma ve termal bozunma davranışlarının farklı teknikler kullanılarak incelenmesi ve açıklanması amaçlanmıştır. Buradan elde edilen veriler uygun WO ve WO/PA karışımlarının belirlenmesi ve bu kumaşlar için yeni güç tutuşur kimyasallar geliştirilmesi için kullanılabilecektir. Elde edilen sonuçlara göre %100 yün için konik kalorimetreyle ölçülen maksimum ısı salım hızı, %21,5 PA içeren kumaşa göre, %25 daha düşük çıkarken mikro ölçekli yakma kalorimetresinde %12 oranında daha fazla çıkmıştır. Bu durum iki malzemenin bozunma adımlarının farklı olmasından kaynaklanmaktadır. Test ekipmanından bağımsız olarak yanma sırasında açığa çıkan toplam ısının, karışımda artan PA oranına bağlı olarak arttığı tespit edilmiştir. Yün ve yünlü kumaşların termo-oksidatif bozunması sırasında meydana gelen çeşitli proseslerin belirlenmesi için termal analizler gerçekleştirilmiştir. Karışımların termal analizinde PA’nın bozunması ayrı bir adım olarak gözlenebilmiştir. Diğer taraftan, karışımların termal bozunma kinetiğinde, bozunmanın ilk aşamalarından itibaren yüne kıyasla meydana gelen farklılıklar, kinetik analizlerle ortaya konmuştur. Bu sonuçlar poliamidin yün ile karıştırılmasının yanma mekanizmasına etkisinin açıklanmasına katkı sağlayacak niteliktedir., Wool (WO) is often blended with polyamide 6.6(PA) at certain ratios in order to obtain fabrics with superior comfort and mechanical features. This type of wool rich upholstery fabrics are commonly preferred in aircraft seats. Flammability is an important characteristic of aircraft materials in terms of safety and regulatory purposes and it is highly dependent on the composition of blends. Since WO/PA blended fabrics cannot meet the flammability requirements, they are used in aircraft after flame retardant finishing. Needs for innovative new flame retardant chemicals for wool and wool blended fabrics are continuing. This study aims to present a comprehensive investigation and understanding of the fire and thermal degradation behaviour of 100% WO and wool rich blends (88.6% WO/11.4% PA and 78.5% WO/21.5% PA). The data obtained in this work can be used to identify the effect of polyamide 6.6 on the flammability of the wool and to develop new flame retardant chemicals for WO/PA blended fabrics. According to the results, the peak of heat release rate of 100% WO increased about 25% when blended with 21.5% PA as measured by the cone calorimeter and decreased about 12% as measured by the micro-scale combustion calorimeter. This is because the decomposition steps of the two materials are different. Regardless of the equipment used for measurements, the total heat release during combustion increased with the increasing PA ratios in blends. The thermal analyses were performed to study various stages occurred during thermo-oxidative decomposition of wool and its blends. The thermal degradation of PA could be observed as a separate stage during decomposition. On the other hand, the kinetics of thermal decomposition, even during the early stages of decomposition was modified for the blended fabrics. The results will contribute to the understanding of the effect of polyamide ratio on the flammability of the wool.

WOS: 000329425500002, Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are widely used and suggested for environmentally oriented applications. New combinations of single methods are described in literature. An overview about methods is given focusing on innovative papers of the previous years. At the same time, there are an increasing number of indications and evident demonstrations that the occurrence of harmful by-products is possible. Chlorate, bromate, and perchlorate belong to these by-products of inorganic nature. Corresponding cases are considered and discussed. By studying electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) it was found that radical generating electrodes show strong tendencies of chlorate and perchlorate formation in aqueous systems containing chloride ions. Also, bromate and perbromate formation is possible. Therefore, the authors propose these components as new inorganic criterions in environmentally oriented water treatment. A new project is described considering electrochemical drinking water disinfection in close cooperation between researchers, health and water treatment officials and cell producers.

The effect of CS/PVA blend ratio and process parameters on the morphology of fibers was investigated by SEM analysis to select the optimum ratio in order to continue the following steps of the study. Silver ion (Ag+) incorporated hydroxyapatite nanoparticles were added to the blend solution. The produced nanofibers are characterized by SEM, FTIR, DSC and antibacterial analysis. It was observed that the generated nanofibers exhibited antibacterial efficiency against E.coli.

Experiments were conducted to evaluate the effects of current density (0.5-3 mA/cm(2)), initial pH (5-9), and supporting electrolyte (Na(2)SO(4)) dosage (0.005-0.03M) on the performance of the system. The influent pH value was found to be a very important parameter that affected fluoride removal significantly. Therefore, influent pH value of 6 was determined to be the most proper value for this study. The highest treatment efficiency was obtained for the largest applicable current density. The initial fluoride concentration of 5 mg/L was reduced down to 0.82 mg/L with the removal efficiency of 83.6 % and electrical energy consumption (EEC) of 1.4 kWh/m(3) at 1 mA/cm(2) whereas 1.03 mg/L which is within the range suggested by WHO was reached with the removal efficiency of 79.4% and EEC of 0.2 kWh/m(3) at the current density of 0.5 mA/cm(2)., Mediterranean Sci Assoc Environm Protection e V

WOS: 000247702200012, PubMed ID: 17140728, Electrochemical oxidation of Basic Red 29 (BR29) was studied in a bipolar trickle tower (BTT) reactor by using Raschig ring shaped boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes, which were originally employed by the present researchers, in a recirculated batch mode. The model solution was prepared with BR29 using distilled water. The effects of initial dye concentration, Na2SO4 concentration as supporting electrolyte, current density, flow rate and initial pH on the removal efficiency were investigated, and practically, complete BR29 removal (over 99%) was obtained in all the studies. After optimum experimental conditions were determined, textile wastewater has also studied by monitoring the destruction of color and COD. With the textile wastewater, 97.2% of color and 91 % of COD removal were, respectively, achieved at the current density of 1 mA/cm(2). Microtox toxicity tests were performed in both BR29 solution and textile wastewater under optimum experimental conditions, and relatively good toxicity reductions were obtained with respect to the initial values. According to the results, BDD anode was seen to be a unique material for the degradation of BR29 and COD and also the reduction of toxicity simultaneously

Synthetic and actual spent battery acid with 20 to 36% sulphuric acid was used in laboratory scale trials to remove dissolved antimony. Electrochemical cells, using anion exchange membranes, were operated on a batch basis. Whereas no antimony deposition was observed in undivided cells, in the divided units, Sb concentrations fell from a few ppm to 0.15 ppm. Current efficiencies at these very low concentrations were significantly less than 0.001%, though at 3500 ppm, current efficiencies were in double figures. These values translate to an energy consumption of 100 to 2000 Whr/l in the ppm concentration range. As well as planar electrodes, 3D electrodes were also tried. Preferred cathode materials are copper and carbonaceous materials.

Part 2 reports electrode kinetic studies based on anodic stripping from rotating disk electrodes made of platinum, glassy carbon, copper and antimony. With all of these, the deposition of antimony or its oxide could be followed, with the electrode material seen to influence the nature of the deposit. Using this equipment, it appeared that antimony could be recovered only from certain technical electrolytes. To some extent, modifying the hydrodynamic conditions resulted in improved recovery of the metal.

The rotating cathode cell is an electrochemical reactor for treatment of process effluent by removal of metal ions in solution. Initial experiments were carried out using a small laboratory unit. In order to develop full-scale industrial size units rated at up to 500 Amp, while holding development costs to a minimum, the system was mathematically modelled in order to characterise the main parameters. Various models were used, with a range of complexities. By calculations using actual data and optimising the models used, a full-scale barrel with cascaded rotating cells, and a multi-stage reactor were brought to the production stage with a minimum ox expensive full-scale practical experiments.

In this study, based on this property of lichens, Pb, Cd, Cr, Ni, Ag, Cu, Fe and Zn originating from traffic, silver mining facilities, chromium mines, locomotive factory, airplane industry, sugar factory and other industries have been determined in Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th.Fr. (1860) found in the Eskisehir region and the origins of these atmospheric pollution have been confirmed.

As a result of this density, the metal pollution that results from either industrial activities or traffic shall affect the air quality negatively. In determining this effect and sources thereof, inspection of the depositing of heavy metals, which cause pollution, on the tree leaves and in the soil, and making comments by comparing with the values in the same kinds of plants and soil in the clean region has been aimed. For this purpose, zinc, copper, chromium, cadmium, iron, nickel, lead analysis have been carried out in order to determine the accumulation of pollution in plants and soils resulting from heavy industry and vehicles around Bozuyuk (Turkey) region which is close to highway. These analyses have been carried out on washed and unwashed tree leave samples and surface soil from ten locations. Data used in the results were the average values of a series of data obtained from the experimental studies.

In this study the removal of the ions causing salinity, namely Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl-, SO42- and HCO3- has been investigated. For this purpose electrochemical methods such as electrodialysis and electrocoagulation have been applied. Conventional methods such as chemical precipitation and adsorption have been employed as a pretreatment to increase the removal efficiency of the electrochemical methods. The experiments accomplished by a combined system consisting of electrochemical and conventional methods have shown that the salinity in the produced formation water could be removed successfully.

Effect of several factors such as color, pH, presence of NaCl, applied potential, initial dye concentration and solution flow rate on the removal rate has been investigated. Energy consumption values have been calculated for different initial dye concentrations and flow rates, and shown as the function of applied potential. Removal rates of 98%, 86% and 85% have been achieved with energy consumption values of 0.044 k Whg(-1), 0.106 k Whg(-1) and 0.044 k Whg(-1) for Ostazin Rod H3B, Ostazin Black HN and Ostazin Olive HG respectively. Removal rate of 82% with energy consumption value of 2 k Whm(-3) has been observed for textile effluent.

Energy consumption was calculated and shown as the, function of applied potential. Removal rate of 100% was practically achieved in a very short time with synthetic solutions. Additionally, samples of waste water taken from the operating line of a local textile plant have also been treated in the reactor. Complete removal of the dyes(98-100%) from these solutions have been achieved with a maximum power consumption of 2.24 kWhm-3.

iv ÖZET Günümüzde, nitrattan kaynaklanan su kirliliği büyük sorunlar yaratmaktadır. Nitrat içeriği fazla suların çeşitli amaçlar için kullanılmadan veya alıcı su ortamına verilmeden önce arıtılması bu sorunları önlemede çözüm olacaktır. Bu çalışmada; nitratın sudan elektrokimyasal yöntemlerle uzaklaştırılabilirliği incelenmiştir. Bu amaçla üç farklı elektrokimyasal yöntem (Elektrodiyaliz, Elektrokimyasal pıhtılaştırma, Elektrokimyasal indirgeme) kullanılmıştır. Yapılan deneylerde, uygulanan gerilimin, pH'nın, başlangıç nitrat derişiminin ve arıtım süresinin etkileri incelenmiştir. Ayrıca elektrokimyasal pıhtılaştırma yönteminde destek elektrolit olarak NaCl kullanılarak giderime etkisi araştırılmıştır. Elde edilen sonuçlar, nitratın her üç elektrokimyasal yöntem ile başarılı bir şekilde uzaklaştırılabileceğini göstermiştir. Yöntemlerin, klasik yöntemlere göre, belirlenen bazı avantajları da irdelenmiştir. SUMMARY Water pollution arising from nitrates poses severe problems. These problems can be overcome if waters containing excess nitrates are treated before discharging to a receiving water body or before any use. In this study the removal of nitrates from water was carried out applying three different electrochemical techniques (electrodialysis, electrochemical coagulation and electrochemical reduction). In the experiments the effects of the applied voltage, pH, initial nitrate concentration and duration of treatment on the removal rate of nitrate have been investigated. Moreover the effects of a supporting electrolyte such as NaCl have been examined. The results obtained from the experiments have indicated that nitrates can be removed effectively by the above mentioned techniques. Some advantages of these techniques compared to the classical ones have also been discussed. 206

Yapılan deneylerde, değişik boyarmadde başlangıç derişimlerinde çalışılmış, uygulanan gerilim ve çözelti akış hızlan değiştirilerek giderim ve enerji tüketimi üzerine etkileri araştırılmıştır. Ayrıca bazı boyarmaddelerde ve tekstil fabrikası atıksuyunda, destek elektrolit olarak kullanılan NaCl derişimi ile pH'ın giderime olan etkileri de incelenmiştir. Elde edilen sonuçlar, atıksulardan boyarmaddelerin, elektrokimyasal yükseltgeme yöntemi ile başarılı bir şekilde uzaklaşılabileceğini göstermiştir. IV SUMMARY In this work the removal of dye stuffs from waste waters has been carried out in a bipolar trickle tower electrochemical reactor. Several dye solutions of different concentrations and some waste water samples provided from Sümerbank textile plant have been examined. The effects of the initial dye concentration, solution flow rate and applied potential on the removal rates and energy consumptions have been investigated. The effects of pH and the NaCl presence on the removal rate have also been investigated. According to the results it can be said that the dye stuffs can be removed successfully from the wastewater electrochemically. This method has several advantages such as operating with a relatively low energy consumption, not requiring extraneous chemicals or ions. Furthermore after the treatment no sludge is formed. 162
