We present a novel deep learning method to separately extract the two-dimensional flux information of the foreground galaxy (deflector) and background system (source) of Galaxy-Galaxy Strong Lensing events using U-Net (GGSL-Unet for short). In particular, the segmentation of the source image is found to enhance the performance of the lens modeling, especially for ground-based images. By combining mock lens foreground+background components with real sky survey noise to train the GGSL-Unet, we show it can correctly model the input image noise and extract the lens signal. However, the most important result of this work is that the GGSL-UNet can accurately reconstruct real ground-based lensing systems from the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS) in one second. We also test the GGSL-UNet on space-based (HST) lenses from BELLS GALLERY, and obtain comparable accuracy of standard lens modeling tools. Finally, we calculate the magnitudes from the reconstructed deflector and source images and use this to derive photometric redshifts (photo-z), with the photo-z of the deflector well consistent with spectroscopic ones. This first work, demonstrates the great potential of the generative network for lens finding, image denoising, source segmentation, and decomposing and modeling of strong lensing systems. Gravitationally strongly lensed quasars (SL-QSO) offer invaluable insights into cosmological and astrophysical phenomena. With the data from ongoing and next-generation surveys, thousands of SL-QSO systems can be discovered expectedly, leading to unprecedented opportunities. However, the challenge lies in identifying SL-QSO from enormous datasets with high recall and purity in an automated and efficient manner. Hence, we developed a program based on a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) for finding SL-QSO from large-scale surveys and applied it to the Kilo-degree Survey Data Release 5 (KiDS DR5). Our approach involves three key stages: firstly, we pre-selected ten million bright objects (with $r$-band $\tt{MAG\_AUTO} < 22$), excluding stars from the dataset; secondly, we established realistic training and test sets to train and fine-tune the CNN, resulting in the identification of 4195 machine candidates, and the false positive rate (FPR) of $\sim$1/2000 and recall of 0.8125 evaluated by using the real test set containing 16 confirmed lensed quasars; thirdly, human inspections were performed for further selections, and then 272 SL-QSO candidates were eventually found in total, including 16 high-score, 118 median-score, and 138 lower-score candidates, separately. Removing the systems already confirmed or identified in other papers, we end up with 229 SL-QSO candidates, including 7 high-score, 95 median-score, and 127 lower-score candidates, and the corresponding catalog is publicly available online., Comment: 11 Figures, 4 Tables. We investigate the ability of the Euclid telescope to detect galaxy-scale gravitational lenses. To do so, we perform a systematic visual inspection of the $0.7\,\rm{deg}^2$ Euclid ERO data towards the Perseus cluster using both the high-resolution VIS $I_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$ band, and the lower resolution NISP bands. We inspect every extended source brighter than magnitude $23$ in $I_{\scriptscriptstyle\rm E}$ with $41$ expert human classifiers. This amounts to $12\,086$ stamps of $10^{\prime\prime}\,\times\,10^{\prime\prime}$. We find $3$ grade A and $13$ grade B candidates. We assess the validity of these $16$ candidates by modelling them and checking that they are consistent with a single source lensed by a plausible mass distribution. Five of the candidates pass this check, five others are rejected by the modelling and six are inconclusive. Extrapolating from the five successfully modelled candidates, we infer that the full $14\,000\,{\rm deg}^2$ of the Euclid Wide Survey should contain $100\,000^{+70\,000}_{-30\,000}$ galaxy-galaxy lenses that are both discoverable through visual inspection and have valid lens models. This is consistent with theoretical forecasts of $170\,000$ discoverable galaxy-galaxy lenses in Euclid. Our five modelled lenses have Einstein radii in the range $0.\!\!^{\prime\prime}68\,<\,\theta_\mathrm{E}\,<1.\!\!^{\prime\prime}24$, but their Einstein radius distribution is on the higher side when compared to theoretical forecasts. This suggests that our methodology is likely missing small Einstein radius systems. The turbulent ionosphere causes phase shifts to incoming radio waves on a broad range of temporal and spatial scales. When an interferometer is not sufficiently calibrated for the direction-dependent ionospheric effects, the time-varying phase shifts can cause the signal to decorrelate. The ionosphere's influence over various spatiotemporal scales introduces a baseline-dependent effect on the interferometric array. We study the impact of baseline-dependent decorrelation on high-redshift observations with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR). Datasets with a range of ionospheric corruptions are simulated using a thin-screen ionosphere model, and calibrated using the state-of-the-art LOFAR Epoch of Reionisation pipeline. For the first time ever, we show the ionospheric impact on various stages of the calibration process including an analysis of the transfer of gain errors from longer to shorter baselines using realistic end-to-end simulations. We find that direction-dependent calibration for source subtraction leaves excess power of up to two orders of magnitude above the thermal noise at the largest spectral scales in the cylindrically averaged auto-power spectrum under normal ionospheric conditions. However, we demonstrate that this excess power can be removed through Gaussian process regression, leaving no excess power above the ten per cent level for a $5~$km diffractive scale. We conclude that ionospheric errors, in the absence of interactions with other aggravating effects, do not constitute a dominant component in the excess power observed in LOFAR Epoch of Reionisation observations of the North Celestial Pole. Current radio interferometers output multi-petabyte-scale volumes of data per year making the storage, transfer, and processing of this data a sizeable challenge. This challenge is expected to grow with the next-generation telescopes such as the Square Kilometre Array. Lossy compression of interferometric data post-correlation can abate this challenge. However, since high-redshift 21-cm studies impose strict precision requirements, the impact of such lossy data compression on the 21-cm signal power spectrum statistic should be understood. We apply Dysco visibility compression, a technique to normalize and quantize specifically designed for radio interferometric data. We establish the level of the compression noise in the power spectrum in comparison to the thermal noise as well as its coherency behavior. Finally, for optimal compression results, we compare the compression noise obtained from different compression settings to a nominal 21-cm signal power. From a single night of observation, we find that the noise introduced due to the compression is more than five orders of magnitude lower than the thermal noise level in the power spectrum. The noise does not affect calibration. The compression noise shows no correlation with the sky signal and has no measurable coherent component. The level of compression error in the power spectrum ultimately depends on the compression settings. Dysco visibility compression is found to be of insignificant concern for 21-cm power spectrum studies. Hence, data volumes can be safely reduced by factors of $\sim 4$ and with insignificant bias to the final power spectrum. Data from SKA-low will likely be compressible by the same factor as LOFAR, owing to the similarities of the two instruments. One of the main obstacles preventing the detection of the redshifted 21-cm signal from neutral hydrogen in the early Universe is the astrophysical foreground emission, which is several orders of magnitude brighter than the signal. The foregrounds, due to their smooth spectra, are expected to predominantly occupy a region in the cylindrical power spectrum known as the foreground wedge. However, the conventional equations describing the extent of the foreground wedge are derived under a flat-sky approximation. This assumption breaks down for tracking wide-field instruments, thus rendering these equations inapplicable in these situations. In this paper, we derive equations for the full sky foreground wedge and show that the foregrounds can potentially extend far beyond what the conventional equations suggest. We also derive the equations that describe a specific bright source in the cylindrical power spectrum space. The validity of both sets of equations is tested against numerical simulations. Many current and upcoming interferometers (e.g., LOFAR, NenuFAR, MWA, SKA) are wide-field phase-tracking instruments. These equations give us new insights into the nature of foreground contamination in the cylindrical power spectra estimated using wide-field instruments. Additionally, they allow us to accurately associate features in the power spectrum to foregrounds or instrumental effects. The equations are also important for correctly selecting the "EoR window" for foreground avoidance analyses, and for planning 21-cm observations. In future analyses, it is recommended to use these updated horizon lines to indicate the foreground wedge in the cylindrical power spectrum accurately. The current standard model of cosmology successfully describes a variety of measurements, but the nature of its main ingredients, dark matter and dark energy, remains unknown. Euclid is a medium-class mission in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme of the European Space Agency (ESA) that will provide high-resolution optical imaging, as well as near-infrared imaging and spectroscopy, over about 14,000 deg^2 of extragalactic sky. In addition to accurate weak lensing and clustering measurements that probe structure formation over half of the age of the Universe, its primary probes for cosmology, these exquisite data will enable a wide range of science. This paper provides a high-level overview of the mission, summarising the survey characteristics, the various data-processing steps, and data products. Large-scale imaging surveys have grown about 1000 times faster than the number of astronomers in the last 3 decades. Using Artificial Intelligence instead of astronomer's brains for interpretative tasks allows astronomers to keep up with the data. The redshifted 21 cm signal from neutral hydrogen is a direct probe of the physics of the early universe and has been an important science driver of many present and upcoming radio interferometers. In this study we use a single night of observations with the New Extension in Nan\c{c}ay Upgrading LOFAR (NenuFAR) to place upper limits on the 21 cm power spectrum from cosmic dawn at a redshift of $z$ = 20.3. NenuFAR is a new low-frequency radio interferometer, operating in the 10-85 MHz frequency range, currently under construction at the Nan\c{c}ay Radio Observatory in France. It is a phased array instrument with a very dense uv coverage at short baselines, making it one of the most sensitive instruments for 21 cm cosmology analyses at these frequencies. Our analysis adopts the foreground subtraction approach, in which sky sources are modeled and subtracted through calibration and residual foregrounds are subsequently removed using Gaussian process regression. The final power spectra are constructed from the gridded residual data cubes in the uv plane. Signal injection tests are performed at each step of the analysis pipeline, the relevant pipeline settings are optimized to ensure minimal signal loss, and any signal suppression is accounted for through a bias correction on our final upper limits. We obtain a best 2$\sigma$ upper limit of $2.4\times 10^7$ $\text{mK}^{2}$ at $z$ = 20.3 and $k$ = 0.041 $h\,\text{cMpc}^{-1}$. We see a strong excess power in the data, making our upper limits two orders of magnitude higher than the thermal noise limit. Measurement of the redshifted 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen from the Cosmic Dawn (CD) and Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) promises to unveil a wealth of information about the astrophysical processes during the first billion years of evolution of the universe. The AARTFAAC Cosmic Explorer (ACE) utilises the AARTFAAC wide-field imager of LOFAR to measure the power spectrum of the intensity fluctuations of the redshifted 21-cm signal from the CD at z~18. The RFI from various sources contaminates the observed data and it is crucial to exclude the RFI-affected data in the analysis for reliable detection. In this work, we investigate the impact of non-ground-based transient RFI using cross-power spectra and cross-coherence metrics to assess the correlation of RFI over time and investigate the level of impact of transient RFI on the ACE 21-cm power spectrum estimation. We detected moving sky-based transient RFI sources that cross the field of view within a few minutes and appear to be mainly from aeroplane communication beacons at the location of the LOFAR core in the 72-75 MHz band, by inspecting filtered images. This transient RFI is mostly uncorrelated over time and is only expected to dominate over the thermal noise for an extremely deep integration time of 3000 hours or more with a hypothetical instrument that is sky temperature dominated at 75 MHz. We find no visible correlation over different k-modes in Fourier space in the presence of noise for realistic thermal noise scenarios. We conclude that the sky-based transient RFI from aeroplanes, satellites and meteorites at present does not pose a significant concern for the ACE analyses at the current level of sensitivity and after integrating over the available 500 hours of observed data. Studying the magnetic fields of exoplanets will provide valuable information about their interior structures, atmospheric properties (escape and dynamics), and potential habitability. One of the most promising methods to detect exoplanetary magnetic fields is to study their auroral radio emission. However, there are no confirmed detections of an exoplanet in the radio despite decades of searching. Recently, Turner et al. 2021 reported a tentative detection of circularly polarized bursty emission from the $\tau$ Boo exoplanetary system using LOFAR low-frequency beamformed observations. The likely source of this emission was presumed to be from the $\tau$ Boo planetary system and a possible explanation is radio emission from the exoplanet $\tau$ Boo b, produced via the cyclotron maser mechanism. Assuming the emission is from the planet, Turner et al. 2021 found that the derived planetary magnetic field is compatible with theoretical predictions. The need to confirm this tentative detection is critical as a conclusive detection would have broad implications for exoplanetary science. In this study, we performed a follow-up campaign on the $\tau$ Boo system using the newly commissioned NenuFAR telescope in 2020. We do not detect any bursty emission in the NenuFAR observations. There are many different degenerate explanations for our non-detection. For example, the original bursty signal may have been caused by an unknown instrumental systematic. Alternatively, the planetary emission from $\tau$ Boo b is variable. As planetary radio emission is triggered by the interaction of the planetary magnetosphere with the magnetized stellar wind, the expected intensity of the planetary radio emission varies greatly with stellar rotation and along the stellar magnetic cycle. We present a new method, called "forced-spectrum fitting", for physically-based spectral modelling of radio sources during deconvolution. This improves upon current common deconvolution fitting methods, which often produce inaccurate spectra. Our method uses any pre-existing spectral index map to assign spectral indices to each model component cleaned during the multi-frequency deconvolution of WSClean, where the pre-determined spectrum is fitted. The component magnitude is evaluated by performing a modified weighted linear least-squares fit. We test this method on a simulated LOFAR-HBA observation of the 3C196 QSO and a real LOFAR-HBA observation of the 4C+55.16 FRI galaxy. We compare the results from the forced-spectrum fitting with traditional joined-channel deconvolution using polynomial fitting. Because no prior spectral information was available for 4C+55.16, we demonstrate a method for extracting spectral indices in the observed frequency band using "clustering". The models generated by the forced-spectrum fitting are used to improve the calibration of the datasets. The final residuals are comparable to existing multi-frequency deconvolution methods, but the output model agrees with the provided spectral index map, embedding correct spectral information. While forced-spectrum fitting does not solve the determination of the spectral information itself, it enables the construction of accurate multi-frequency models that can be used for wide-band calibration and subtraction., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, 5 tables. While the direct detection of the dark-matter particle remains very challenging, the nature of dark matter could be possibly constrained by comparing the observed abundance and properties of small-scale sub-galactic mass structures with predictions from the phenomenological dark-matter models, such as cold, warm or hot dark matter. Galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lensing provides a unique opportunity to search for tiny surface-brightness anomalies in the extended lensed images (i.e. Einstein rings or gravitational arcs), induced by possible small-scale mass structures in the foreground lens galaxy. In this paper, the first in a series, we introduce and test a methodology to measure the power spectrum of such surface-brightness anomalies from high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope (HST) imaging. In particular, we focus on the observational aspects of this statistical approach, such as the most suitable observational strategy and sample selection, the choice of modelling techniques and the noise correction. We test the feasibility of the power-spectrum measurement by applying it to a sample of galaxy-galaxy strong gravitational lens systems from the Sloan Lens ACS Survey, with the most extended, bright, high-signal-to-noise-ratio lensed images, observed in the rest frame ultraviolet. Multiply lensed sources experience a relative time delay in the arrival of photons. This effect can be used to measure absolute distances and the Hubble constant ($H_0$) and is known as time-delay cosmography. The methodology is independent of the local distance ladder and early-universe physics and provides a precise and competitive measurement of $H_0$. With upcoming observatories, time-delay cosmography can provide a 1% precision measurement of $H_0$ and can decisively shed light on the current reported 'Hubble tension'. This paper presents the theoretical background and the current techniques applied for time-delay cosmographic studies and the measurement of the Hubble constant. The paper describes the challenges and systematics in the different components of the analysis and strategies to mitigate them. Detecting the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) is challenging due to the strong astrophysical foregrounds, ionospheric effects, radio frequency interference and instrumental effects. Understanding and calibrating these effects are crucial for the detection. In this work, we introduce a newly developed direction-dependent (DD) calibration algorithm DDECAL and compare its performance with an existing algorithm, SAGECAL, in the context of the LOFAR-EoR 21-cm power spectrum experiment. In our data set, the North Celestial Pole (NCP) and its flanking fields were observed simultaneously. We analyse the NCP and one of its flanking fields. The NCP field is calibrated by the standard pipeline, using SAGECAL with an extensive sky model and 122 directions, and the flanking field is calibrated by DDECAL and SAGECAL with a simpler sky model and 22 directions. Additionally, two strategies are used for subtracting Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A. The results show that DDECAL performs better at subtracting sources in the primary beam region due to the application of a beam model, while SAGECAL performs better at subtracting Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A. This indicates that including a beam model during DD calibration significantly improves the performance. The benefit is obvious in the primary beam region. We also compare the 21-cm power spectra on two different fields. The results show that the flanking field produces better upper limits compared to the NCP in this particular observation. Despite the minor differences between DDECAL and SAGECAL due to the beam application, we find that the two algorithms yield comparable 21-cm power spectra on the LOFAR-EoR data after foreground removal. The detection of the 21 cm signal of neutral hydrogen from the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) is challenging due to bright foreground sources, radio frequency interference (RFI), the ionosphere, and instrumental effects. Even after correcting for these effects in the calibration step and applying foreground removal techniques, the remaining residuals in the observed 21 cm power spectra are still above the thermal noise, which is referred to as the "excess variance." We study potential causes of this excess variance based on 13 nights of data obtained with the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR). We focused on the impact of gain errors, the sky model, and ionospheric effects on the excess variance by correlating the relevant parameters such as the gain variance over time or frequency, local sidereal time (LST), diffractive scale, and phase structure-function slope with the level of excess variance. Our analysis shows that excess variance has an LST dependence, which is related to the power from the sky. And the simulated Stokes I power spectra from bright sources and the excess variance show a similar progression over LST with the minimum power appearing at LST bin 6h to 9h. This LST dependence is also present in sky images of the residual Stokes I of the observations. In very-wide sky images, we demonstrate that the extra power comes exactly from the direction of bright and distant sources Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A with the array beam patterns. These results suggest that the level of excess variance in the 21 cm signal power spectra is related to sky effects and, hence, it depends on LST. In particular, very bright and distant sources such as Cassiopeia A and Cygnus A can dominate the effect. Aims: Contamination from bright diffuse Galactic thermal and non-thermal radio emission poses crucial challenges in experiments aiming to measure the 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen from the Cosmic Dawn and Epoch of Reionization. If not included in calibration, this diffuse emission can severely impact the analysis and signal extraction in 21-cm experiments. We examine large-scale diffuse Galactic emission at 122~MHz, around the North Celestial Pole, using the AARTFAAC-HBA system. Methods: In this pilot project, we present the first-ever wide-field image produced with a single sub-band of the data recorded with the AARTFAAC-HBA. We demonstrate two methods: multiscale CLEAN and shapelet decomposition, to model the diffuse emission revealed in the image. We use angular power spectrum metrics to quantify different components of the emission and compare the performance of the two diffuse structure modelling approaches. Results: We observe that the point sources dominate the angular power spectrum ($\ell(\ell+1)C_{\ell}/2\pi\equiv \Delta^2(\ell)$) of the emission in the field on scales $\ell\gtrsim 60$ ($\lesssim 3$~degree). The angular power spectrum after subtraction of compact sources is flat within $20\lesssim \ell \lesssim200$ range, suggesting that the residual power is dominated by the diffuse emission on scales $\ell\lesssim200$. The residual diffuse emission has a brightness temperature variance of $\Delta^2_{\ell=180} = (145.64 \pm 13.61)~{\rm K}^2$ at 122~MHz on angular scales of 1~degree, and is consistent with a power-law following $C_{\ell}\propto \ell^{-2.0}$ in $20\lesssim \ell \lesssim200$ range. We also find that, in the current setup, the multiscale CLEAN is suitable to model the compact and diffuse structures on a wide range of angular scales, whereas the shapelet decomposition method better models the large scales, which are of the order of a few degrees and wider., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures, accepted (A&A)

We investigate systematic effects in direction dependent gain calibration in the context of the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) 21-cm Epoch of Reionization (EoR) experiment. The LOFAR EoR Key Science Project aims to detect the 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen on interferometric baselines of $50-250 \lambda$. We show that suppression of faint signals can effectively be avoided by calibrating these short baselines using only the longer baselines. However, this approach causes an excess variance on the short baselines due to small gain errors induced by overfitting during calibration. We apply a regularised expectation-maximisation algorithm with consensus optimisation (sagecal-co) to real data with simulated signals to show that overfitting can be largely mitigated by penalising spectrally non-smooth gain solutions during calibration. This reduces the excess power with about a factor 4 in the simulations. We present 97 new high-quality strong lensing candidates found in the final $\sim 350\,\rm deg^2$, that completed the full $\sim 1350\,\rm deg^2$ area of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS). Together with our previous findings, the final list of high-quality candidates from KiDS sums up to 268 systems. The new sample is assembled using a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier applied to $r$-band (best seeing) and $g,~r,~i$ color-composited images separately. This optimizes the complementarity of the morphology and color information on the identification of strong lensing candidates. We apply the new classifiers to a sample of luminous red galaxies (LRGs) and a sample of bright galaxies (BGs) and select candidates that received a high probability to be a lens from the CNN ($P_{\rm CNN}$). In particular, setting $P_{\rm CNN}>0.8$ for the LRGs, the $1$-band CNN predicts 1213 candidates, while the $3$-band classifier yields 1299 candidates, with only $\sim$30\% overlap. For the BGs, in order to minimize the false positives, we adopt a more conservative threshold, $P_{\rm CNN} >0.9$, for both CNN classifiers. This results in 3740 newly selected objects. The candidates from the two samples are visually inspected by 7 co-authors to finally select 97 "high-quality" lens candidates which received mean scores larger than 6 (on a scale from 0 to 10). We finally discuss the effect of the seeing on the accuracy of CNN classification and possible avenues to increase the efficiency of multi-band classifiers, in preparation of next-generation surveys from ground and space., Comment: Published by APJ

The exploration of the Cosmic Dawn, the period of the Universe during which the first stars and galaxies were formed, is one of the last frontiers of modern astronomy and cosmology. The redshifted 21-cm line emission from neutral hydrogen is a unique probe and can open this era for astrophysical and cosmological studies. The tentative detection of the 21-cm global signal by the EDGES team at $z \sim 17$ underlines the need for an interferometric detection of this signal to discriminate between the numerous models trying to explain this unexpected discovery. The NenuFAR Cosmic-Dawn Key-Science Program aims to perform this detection in the redshift range $z \sim 15 - 31$ with a novel SKA precursor, the NenuFAR radio telescope located at the Station de Radioastronomie de Nan\c{c}ay and that started operating in 2019. Due to its compactness it is particularly sensitive to the large scale of the 21-cm signal. Only 100 hours of observation are needed to reach the level of the most extreme models, while 1000 hours are needed for the more standard models. Observations have already started, accumulating to almost 500 hours on the North Celestial Pole field. [abridged] The International LOFAR Telescope is an interferometer with stations spread across Europe. With baselines of up to ~2,000 km, LOFAR has the unique capability of achieving sub-arcsecond resolution at frequencies below 200 MHz, although this is technically and logistically challenging. Here we present a calibration strategy that builds on previous high-resolution work with LOFAR. We give an overview of the calibration strategy and discuss the special challenges inherent to enacting high-resolution imaging with LOFAR, and describe the pipeline, which is publicly available, in detail. We demonstrate the calibration strategy by using the pipeline on P205+55, a typical LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) pointing. We perform in-field delay calibration, solution referencing to other calibrators, self-calibration, and imaging of example directions of interest in the field. For this specific field and these ionospheric conditions, dispersive delay solutions can be transferred between calibrators up to ~1.5 degrees away, while phase solution transferral works well over 1 degree. We demonstrate a check of the astrometry and flux density scale. Imaging in 17 directions, the restoring beam is typically 0.3" x 0.2" although this varies slightly over the entire 5 square degree field of view. We achieve ~80 to 300 $\mu$Jy/bm image rms noise, which is dependent on the distance from the phase centre; typical values are ~90 $\mu$Jy/bm for the 8 hour observation with 48 MHz of bandwidth. Seventy percent of processed sources are detected, and from this we estimate that we should be able to image ~900 sources per LoTSS pointing. This equates to ~3 million sources in the northern sky, which LoTSS will entirely cover in the next several years. The Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR) Long-Baseline Calibrator Survey (LBCS) was conducted between 2014 and 2019 in order to obtain a set of suitable calibrators for the LOFAR array. In this paper we present the complete survey, building on the preliminary analysis published in 2016 which covered approximately half the survey area. The final catalogue consists of 30006 observations of 24713 sources in the northern sky, selected for a combination of high low-frequency radio flux density and flat spectral index using existing surveys (WENSS, NVSS, VLSS, and MSSS). Approximately one calibrator per square degree, suitable for calibration of $\geq$ 200 km baselines is identified by the detection of compact flux density, for declinations north of 30 degrees and away from the Galactic plane, with a considerably lower density south of this point due to relative difficulty in selecting flat-spectrum candidate sources in this area of the sky. Use of the VLBA calibrator list, together with statistical arguments by comparison with flux densities from lower-resolution catalogues, allow us to establish a rough flux density scale for the LBCS observations, so that LBCS statistics can be used to estimate compact flux densities on scales between 300 mas and 2 arcsec, for sources observed in the survey. The LBCS can be used to assess the structures of point sources in lower-resolution surveys, with significant reductions in the degree of coherence in these sources on scales between 2 arcsec and 300 mas. The LBCS survey sources show a greater incidence of compact flux density in quasars than in radio galaxies, consistent with unified schemes of radio sources. Comparison with samples of sources from interplanetary scintillation (IPS) studies with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA) shows consistent patterns of detection of compact structure in sources observed both interferometrically with LOFAR and using IPS., Comment: Accepted to a special issue of A&A on sub-arcsecond imaging with LOFAR

The low-frequency radio spectra of the hotspots within powerful radio galaxies can provide valuable information about the physical processes operating at the site of the jet termination. These processes are responsible for the dissipation of jet kinetic energy, particle acceleration, and magnetic-field generation. Here we report new observations of the powerful radio galaxy Cygnus A using the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) between 109 and 183 MHz, at an angular resolution of ~3.5 arcsec. The radio emission of the lobes is found to have a complex spectral index distribution, with a spectral steepening found towards the centre of the source. For the first time, a turnover in the radio spectrum of the two main hotspots of Cygnus A has been directly observed. By combining our LOFAR imaging with data from the Very Large Array at higher frequencies, we show that the very rapid turnover in the hotspot spectra cannot be explained by a low-energy cut-off in the electron energy distribution, as has been previously suggested. Thermal (free-free) absorption or synchrotron self absorption models are able to describe the low-frequency spectral shape of the hotspots, however, as with previous studies, we find that the implied model parameters are unlikely, and interpreting the spectra of the hotspots remains problematic., Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We report the discovery of two Einstein Crosses (ECs) in the footprint of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS): KIDS J232940-340922 and KIDS J122456+005048. Using integral field spectroscopy from MUSE@VLT, we confirm their gravitational-lens nature. In both cases, the four spectra of the source clearly show a prominence of absorption features, hence revealing an evolved stellar population with little star formation. The lensing model of the two systems, assuming a singular isothermal ellipsoid (SIE) with external shear, shows that: 1) the two crosses, located at redshift $z=0.38$ and 0.24, have Einstein radius $R_{\rm E}=5.2$ kpc and 5.4 kpc, respectively; 2) their projected dark matter fractions inside the half effective radius are 0.60 and 0.56 (Chabrier IMF); 3) the sources are ultra-compact galaxies, $R_{\rm e}\sim0.9$ kpc (at redshift $z_{\rm s}=1.59$) and $R_{\rm e}\sim0.5$ kpc ($z_{\rm s}=1.10$), respectively. These results are unaffected by the underlying mass density assumption. Due to size, blue color and absorption-dominated spectra, corroborated by low specific star-formation rates derived from optical-NIR spectral energy distribution fitting, we argue that the two lensed sources in these ECs are blue nuggets migrating toward their quenching phase., Comment: Accepted for publication on APJL

The LOFAR Two-metre Sky Survey (LoTSS) will cover the full northern sky and, additionally, aims to observe the LoTSS deep fields to a noise level of ~10 microJy/bm over several tens of square degrees in areas that have the most extensive ancillary data. This paper presents the ELAIS-N1 deep field, the deepest of the LoTSS deep fields to date. With an effective observing time of 163.7 hours, it reaches a root mean square (RMS) noise level below 20 microJy/bm in the central region (and below 30 microJy/bm over 10 square degrees). The resolution is 6 arcsecs and 84862 radio sources were detected in the full area (68 sq. deg.) with 74127 sources in the highest quality area at less than 3 degrees from the pointing centre. The observation reaches a sky density of more than 5000 sources per sq. deg. in the central ~5 sq. deg. region. We present the calibration procedure, which addresses the special configuration of some observations and the extended bandwidth covered (115 to 177 MHz; central frequency 146.2 MHz) compared to standard LoTSS. We also describe the methods used to calibrate the flux density scale using cross-matching with sources detected by other radio surveys in the literature. We find the flux density uncertainty related to the flux density scale to be ~6.5%. By studying the variations of the flux density measurements between different epochs, we show that relative flux density calibration is reliable out to about a 3 degree radius, but that additional flux density uncertainty is present for all sources at about the 3 per cent level; this is likely to be associated with residual calibration errors, and is shown to be more significant in datasets with poorer ionosphere conditions. We also provide intra-band spectral indices, which can be useful to detect sources with unusual spectral properties. We compare various foreground removal techniques that are being utilised to remove bright foregrounds in various experiments aiming to detect the redshifted 21cm signal of neutral hydrogen from the Epoch of Reionization. In this work, we test the performance of removal techniques (FastICA, GMCA, and GPR) on 10 nights of LOFAR data and investigate the possibility of recovering the latest upper limit on the 21cm signal. Interestingly, we find that GMCA and FastICA reproduce the most recent 2$\sigma$ upper limit of $\Delta^2_{21} <$ (73)$^2$ mK$^2$ at $k=0.075~ h \mathrm{cMpc}^{-1}$, which resulted from the application of GPR. We also find that FastICA and GMCA begin to deviate from the noise-limit at \textit{k}-scales larger than $\sim 0.1 ~h \mathrm{cMpc}^{-1}$. We then replicate the data via simulations to see the source of FastICA and GMCA's limitations, by testing them against various instrumental effects. We find that no single instrumental effect, such as primary beam effects or mode-mixing, can explain the poorer recovery by FastICA and GMCA at larger \textit{k}-scales. We then test scale-independence of FastICA and GMCA, and find that lower \textit{k}-scales can be modelled by a smaller number of independent components. For larger scales ($k \gtrsim 0.1~h \mathrm{cMpc}^{-1}$), more independent components are needed to fit the foregrounds. We conclude that, the current usage of GPR by the LOFAR collaboration is the appropriate removal technique. The 21-cm absorption feature reported by the EDGES collaboration is several times stronger than that predicted by traditional astrophysical models. If genuine, a deeper absorption may lead to stronger fluctuations on the 21-cm signal on degree scales (up to 1~Kelvin in rms), allowing these fluctuations to be detectable in nearly 50~times shorter integration times compared to previous predictions. We commenced the "AARTFAAC Cosmic Explorer" (ACE) program, that employs the AARTFAAC wide-field imager, to measure or set limits on the power spectrum of the 21-cm fluctuations in the redshift range $z = 17.9-18.6$ ($\Delta\nu = 72.36-75.09$~MHz) corresponding to the deep part of the EDGES absorption feature. Here, we present first results from two LST bins: 23.5-23.75h and 23.5-23.75h, each with 2~h of data, recorded in `semi drift-scan' mode. We demonstrate the application of the new ACE data-processing pipeline (adapted from the LOFAR-EoR pipeline) on the AARTFAAC data. We observe that noise estimates from the channel and time-differenced Stokes~$V$ visibilities agree with each other. After 2~h of integration and subtraction of bright foregrounds, we obtain $2\sigma$ upper limits on the 21-cm power spectrum of $\Delta_{21}^2 < (8139~\textrm{mK})^2$ and $\Delta_{21}^2 < (8549~\textrm{mK})^2$ at $k = 0.144~h\,\textrm{cMpc}^{-1}$ for the two LST bins. Incoherently averaging the noise bias-corrected power spectra for the two LST bins yields an upper limit of $\Delta_{21}^2 < (7388~\textrm{mK})^2$ at $k = 0.144~h\,\textrm{cMpc}^{-1}$. The H0LiCOW collaboration inferred via gravitational lensing time delays a Hubble constant $H_0=73.3^{+1.7}_{-1.8}$ km s$^{-1}{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, describing deflector mass density profiles by either a power-law or stars plus standard dark matter halos. The mass-sheet transform (MST) that leaves the lensing observables unchanged is considered the dominant source of residual uncertainty in $H_0$. We quantify any potential effect of the MST with flexible mass models that are maximally degenerate with H0. Our calculation is based on a new hierarchical approach in which the MST is only constrained by stellar kinematics. The approach is validated on hydrodynamically simulated lenses. We apply the method to the TDCOSMO sample of 7 lenses (6 from H0LiCOW) and measure $H_0=74.5^{+5.6}_{-6.1}$ km s$^{-1}{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$. In order to further constrain the deflector mass profiles, we then add imaging and spectroscopy for 33 strong gravitational lenses from the SLACS sample. For 9 of the SLAC lenses we use resolved kinematics to constrain the stellar anisotropy. From the joint analysis of the TDCOSMO+SLACS sample, we measure $H_0=67.4^{+4.1}_{-3.2}$ km s$^{-1}{\rm Mpc}^{-1}$, assuming that the TDCOSMO and SLACS galaxies are drawn from the same parent population. The blind H0LiCOW, TDCOSMO-only and TDCOSMO+SLACS analyses are in mutual statistical agreement. The TDCOSMO+SLACS analysis prefers marginally shallower mass profiles than H0LiCOW or TDCOSMO-only. While our new analysis does not statistically invalidate the mass profile assumptions by H0LiCOW, and thus their $H_0$ measurement relying on those, it demonstrates the importance of understanding the mass density profile of elliptical galaxies. The uncertainties on $H_0$ derived in this paper can be reduced by physical or observational priors on the form of the mass profile, or by additional data, chiefly spatially resolved kinematics of lens galaxies., Comment: accepted by A&A. We present an overview and description of the eMERLIN Galaxy Evolution survey (eMERGE) Data Release 1 (DR1), a large program of high-resolution 1.5 GHz radio observations of the GOODS-N field comprising $\sim140$ hours of observations with eMERLIN and $\sim40$ hours with the Very Large Array (VLA). We combine the long baselines of eMERLIN (providing high angular resolution) with the relatively closely-packed antennas of the VLA (providing excellent surface brightness sensitivity) to produce a deep 1.5 GHz radio survey with the sensitivity ($\sim 1.5\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$), angular resolution ($0.2"$--$0.7"$) and field-of-view ($\sim15' \times 15'$) to detect and spatially resolve star-forming galaxies and AGN at $z\gtrsim 1$. The goal of eMERGE is to provide new constraints on the deep, sub-arcsecond radio sky which will be surveyed by SKA1-mid. In this initial publication, we discuss our data analysis techniques, including steps taken to model in-beam source variability over a $\sim20$ year baseline and the development of new point spread function/primary beam models to seamlessly merge eMERLIN and VLA data in the $uv$ plane. We present early science results, including measurements of the luminosities and/or linear sizes of $\sim500$ galaxes selected at 1.5 GHz. In combination with deep Hubble Space Telescope observations, we measure a mean radio-to-optical size ratio of $r_{\rm eMERGE}/r_{\rm HST}\sim1.02\pm0.03$, suggesting that in most high-redshift galaxies, the $\sim$GHz continuum emission traces the stellar light seen in optical imaging. We report new high-quality galaxy scale strong lens candidates found in the Kilo Degree Survey data release 4 using Machine Learning. We have developed a new Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) classifier to search for gravitational arcs, following the prescription by \cite{2019MNRAS.484.3879P} and using only $r-$band images. We have applied the CNN to two "predictive samples": a Luminous red galaxy (LRG) and a "bright galaxy" (BG) sample ($r<21$). We have found 286 new high probability candidates, 133 from the LRG sample and 153 from the BG sample. We have then ranked these candidates based on a value that combines the CNN likelihood to be a lens and the human score resulting from visual inspection (P-value) and we present here the highest 82 ranked candidates with P-values $\ge 0.5$. All these high-quality candidates have obvious arc or point-like features around the central red defector. Moreover, we define the best 26 objects, all with scores P-values $\ge 0.7$ as a "golden sample" of candidates. This sample is expected to contain very few false positives and thus it is suitable for follow-up observations. The new lens candidates come partially from the the more extended footprint adopted here with respect to the previous analyses, partially from a larger predictive sample (also including the BG sample). These results show that machine learning tools are very promising to find strong lenses in large surveys and more candidates that can be found by enlarging the predictive samples beyond the standard assumption of LRGs. We present low-radio-frequency follow-up observations of AT 2017gfo, the electromagnetic counterpart of GW170817, which was the first binary neutron star merger to be detected by Advanced LIGO-Virgo. These data, with a central frequency of 144 MHz, were obtained with LOFAR, the Low-Frequency Array. The maximum elevation of the target is just 13.7 degrees when observed with LOFAR, making our observations particularly challenging to calibrate and significantly limiting the achievable sensitivity. On time-scales of 130-138 and 371-374 days after the merger event, we obtain 3$\sigma$ upper limits for the afterglow component of 6.6 and 19.5 mJy beam$^{-1}$, respectively. Using our best upper limit and previously published, contemporaneous higher-frequency radio data, we place a limit on any potential steepening of the radio spectrum between 610 and 144 MHz: the two-point spectral index $\alpha^{610}_{144} \gtrsim -2.5$. The ARCADE2 and LWA1 experiments have claimed an excess over the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) at low radio frequencies. If the cosmological high-redshift contribution to this radio background is between 0.1% and 22% of the CMB at 1.42 GHz, it could explain the tentative EDGES Low-Band detection of the anomalously deep absorption in the 21-cm signal of neutral hydrogen. We use the upper limit on the 21-cm signal from the Epoch of Reionization ($z=9.1$) based on 141 hours of observations with LOFAR to evaluate the contribution of the high redshift Universe to the detected radio background. Marginalizing over astrophysical properties of star-forming halos, we find (at 95% C.L.) that the cosmological radio background can be at most 9.6% of the CMB at 1.42 GHz. This limit rules out strong contribution of the high-redshift Universe to the ARCADE2 and LWA1 measurements. Even though LOFAR places limit on the extra radio background, excess of $0.1-9.6$% over the CMB (at 1.42 GHz) is still allowed and could explain the EDGES Low-Band detection. We also constrain the thermal and ionization state of the gas at $z = 9.1$ and put limits on the properties of the first star-forming objects. We find that, in agreement with the limits from EDGES High-Band data, LOFAR data constrain scenarios with inefficient X-ray sources and cases where the Universe was ionized by stars in massive halos only., Comment: Published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society (MNRAS). The four persistent radio sources in the northern sky with the highest flux density at metre wavelengths are Cassiopeia A, Cygnus A, Taurus A, and Virgo A; collectively they are called the A-team. Their flux densities at ultra-low frequencies (<100 MHz) can reach several thousands of janskys, and they often contaminate observations of the low-frequency sky by interfering with image processing. Furthermore, these sources are foreground objects for all-sky observations hampering the study of faint signals, such as the cosmological 21 cm line from the epoch of reionisation. We aim to produce robust models for the surface brightness emission as a function of frequency for the A-team sources at ultra-low frequencies. These models are needed for the calibration and imaging of wide-area surveys of the sky with low-frequency interferometers. This requires obtaining images at an angular resolution better than 15 arcsec with a high dynamic range and good image fidelity. We observed the A-team with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) at frequencies between 30 MHz and 77 MHz using the Low Band Antenna (LBA) system. We reduced the datasets and obtained an image for each A-team source. The paper presents the best models to date for the sources Cassiopeia A, Cygnus A, Taurus A, and Virgo A between 30 MHz and 77 MHz. We were able to obtain the aimed resolution and dynamic range in all cases. We derive constraints on the thermal and ionization states of the intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshift $\approx$ 9.1 using new upper limits on the 21-cm power spectrum measured by the LOFAR radio-telescope and a prior on the ionized fraction at that redshift estimated from recent cosmic microwave background (CMB) observations. We have used results from the reionization simulation code GRIZZLY and a Bayesian inference framework to constrain the parameters which describe the physical state of the IGM. We find that, if the gas heating remains negligible, an IGM with ionized fraction $\gtrsim 0.13$ and a distribution of the ionized regions with a characteristic size $\gtrsim 8 ~h^{-1}$ comoving megaparsec (Mpc) and a full width at the half maximum (FWHM) $\gtrsim 16 ~h^{-1}$ Mpc is ruled out. For an IGM with a uniform spin temperature $T_{\rm S} \gtrsim 3$ K, no constraints on the ionized component can be computed. If the large-scale fluctuations of the signal are driven by spin temperature fluctuations, an IGM with a volume fraction $\lesssim 0.34$ of heated regions with a temperature larger than CMB, average gas temperature 7-160 K and a distribution of the heated regions with characteristic size 3.5-70 $h^{-1}$ Mpc and FWHM of $\lesssim 110$ $h^{-1}$ Mpc is ruled out. These constraints are within the 95 per cent credible intervals. A new upper limit on the 21-cm signal power spectrum at a redshift of $z \approx 9.1$ is presented, based on 141 hours of data obtained with the Low-Frequency Array (LOFAR). The analysis includes significant improvements in spectrally-smooth gain-calibration, Gaussian Process Regression (GPR) foreground mitigation and optimally-weighted power spectrum inference. Previously seen `excess power' due to spectral structure in the gain solutions has markedly reduced but some excess power still remains with a spectral correlation distinct from thermal noise. This excess has a spectral coherence scale of $0.25 - 0.45$\,MHz and is partially correlated between nights, especially in the foreground wedge region. The correlation is stronger between nights covering similar local sidereal times. A best 2-$\sigma$ upper limit of $\Delta^2_{21} < (73)^2\,\mathrm{mK^2}$ at $k = 0.075\,\mathrm{h\,cMpc^{-1}}$ is found, an improvement by a factor $\approx 8$ in power compared to the previously reported upper limit. The remaining excess power could be due to residual foreground emission from sources or diffuse emission far away from the phase centre, polarization leakage, chromatic calibration errors, ionosphere, or low-level radio-frequency interference. Time-delay cosmography of lensed quasars has achieved 2.4% precision on the measurement of the Hubble constant, $H_0$. As part of an ongoing effort to uncover and control systematic uncertainties, we investigate three potential sources: 1- stellar kinematics, 2- line-of-sight effects, and 3- the deflector mass model. To meet this goal in a quantitative way, we reproduced the H0LiCOW/SHARP/STRIDES (hereafter TDCOSMO) procedures on a set of real and simulated data, and we find the following. First, stellar kinematics cannot be a dominant source of error or bias since we find that a systematic change of 10% of measured velocity dispersion leads to only a 0.7% shift on $H_0$ from the seven lenses analyzed by TDCOSMO. Second, we find no bias to arise from incorrect estimation of the line-of-sight effects. Third, we show that elliptical composite (stars + dark matter halo), power-law, and cored power-law mass profiles have the flexibility to yield a broad range in $H_0$ values. However, the TDCOSMO procedures that model the data with both composite and power-law mass profiles are informative. If the models agree, as we observe in real systems owing to the "bulge-halo" conspiracy, $H_0$ is recovered precisely and accurately by both models. If the two models disagree, as in the case of some pathological models illustrated here, the TDCOSMO procedure either discriminates between them through the goodness of fit, or it accounts for the discrepancy in the final error bars provided by the analysis. This conclusion is consistent with a reanalysis of six of the TDCOSMO (real) lenses: the composite model yields $74.0^{+1.7}_{-1.8}$ $km.s^{-1}.Mpc^{-1}$, while the power-law model yields $H_0=74.2^{+1.6}_{-1.6}$ $km.s^{-1}.Mpc^{-1}$. This chapter addresses limitations to current 21-cm signal detection instruments, being related to the instrument, environment, signal processing or science, and what lies beyond the current horizon for 21-cm science, especially in the 2030s and beyond. We address how to overcome current challenges and drive the field forward, not only approaching a detection of the 21-cm signal but to a full characterisation of its parameterspace, in particular, probing an increasingly larger volume of k-modes (spatially and in redshifts). In this paper, we exploit the gravitational lensing effect to detect proper motion in the highly magnified gravitationally lensed source MG B2016+112. We find positional shifts up to 6 mas in the lensed images by comparing two Very Long Baseline Interferometric (VLBI) radio observations at 1.7 GHz that are separated by 14.359 years, and provide an astrometric accuracy of the order of tens of $\mu$as. From lens modelling, we exclude a shift in the lensing galaxy as the cause of the positional change of the lensed images, and we assign it to the background source. The source consists of four sub-components separated by $\sim 175$ pc, with proper motion of the order of tens $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$ for the two components at highest magnification ($\mu\sim350$) and of the order of a few mas yr$^{-1}$ for the two components at lower magnification ($\mu\sim2$). We propose single AGN and dual AGN scenarios to explain the source plane. Although, the latter interpretation is supported by the archival multi-wavelength properties of the object. In this case, MG B2016+112 would represent the highest redshift dual radio-loud AGN system discovered thus far, and would support the merger interpretation for such systems. Also, given the low probability ($\sim10^{-5}$) of detecting a dual AGN system that is also gravitationally lensed, if confirmed, this would suggest that such dual AGN systems must be more abundant in the early Universe than currently thought., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures; accepted for publication by Astronomy and Astrophysics

We analyse the accuracy of radio interferometric gridding of visibilities with the aim to quantify the Epoch of Reionization (EoR) 21-cm power spectrum bias caused by gridding, ultimately to determine the suitability of different imaging algorithms and gridding settings for 21-cm power spectrum analysis. We simulate realistic LOFAR data, and construct power spectra with convolutional gridding and w-stacking, w-projection, image domain gridding and without w-correction. These are compared against directly Fourier transformed data. The influence of oversampling, kernel size, w-quantization, kernel windowing function and image padding are quantified. The gridding excess power is measured with a foreground subtraction strategy, for which foregrounds have been subtracted using Gaussian progress regression, as well as with a foreground avoidance strategy. Constructing a power spectrum that has a bias significantly lower compared to the expected EoR signals is possible with the tested methods, but requires a kernel oversampling factor > 4000 and, when using w-correction, > 500 w-quantization levels. These values are higher than typical values used for imaging, but are computationally feasible. The kernel size and padding factor parameters are less crucial. Among the tested methods, image domain gridding shows the highest accuracy with the lowest imaging time. LOFAR 21-cm power spectrum results are not affected by gridding. Image domain gridding is overall the most suitable algorithm for 21-cm EoR experiments, including for future SKA EoR analyses. Nevertheless, convolutional gridding with tuned parameters results in sufficient accuracy. This holds also for w-stacking for wide-field imaging. The w-projection algorithm is less suitable because of the kernel oversampling requirements, and a faceting approach is unsuitable due to the resulting spatial discontinuities., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A ; abstract abridged

Galaxies and galaxy groups located along the line of sight towards gravitationally lensed quasars produce high-order perturbations of the gravitational potential at the lens position. When these perturbation are too large, they can induce a systematic error on $H_0$ of a few-percent if the lens system is used for cosmological inference and the perturbers are not explicitly accounted for in the lens model. In this work, we present a detailed characterization of the environment of the lens system WFI2033-4723 ($z_{\rm src} = 1.662$, $z_{\rm lens}$ = 0.6575), one of the core targets of the H0LICOW project for which we present cosmological inferences in a companion paper (Rusu et al. 2019). We use the Gemini and ESO-Very Large telescopes to measure the spectroscopic redshifts of the brightest galaxies towards the lens, and use the ESO-MUSE integral field spectrograph to measure the velocity-dispersion of the lens ($\sigma_{\rm {los}}= 250^{+15}_{-21}$ km/s) and of several nearby galaxies. In addition, we measure photometric redshifts and stellar masses of all galaxies down to $i < 23$ mag, mainly based on Dark Energy Survey imaging (DR1). Our new catalog, complemented with literature data, more than doubles the number of known galaxy spectroscopic redshifts in the direct vicinity of the lens, expanding to 116 (64) the number of spectroscopic redshifts for galaxies separated by less than 3 arcmin (2 arcmin) from the lens. Using the flexion-shift as a measure of the amplitude of the gravitational perturbation, we identify 2 galaxy groups and 3 galaxies that require specific attention in the lens models. The ESO MUSE data enable us to measure the velocity-dispersions of three of these galaxies. These results are essential for the cosmological inference analysis presented in Rusu et al. We present a study of the stellar host galaxy, CO (1$-$0) molecular gas distribution and AGN emission on 50 to 500 pc-scales of the gravitationally lensed dust-obscured AGN MG J0751+2716 and JVAS B1938+666 at redshifts 3.200 and 2.059, respectively. By correcting for the lensing distortion using a grid-based lens modelling technique, we spatially locate the different emitting regions in the source plane for the first time. Both AGN host galaxies have 300 to 500 pc-scale size and surface brightness consistent with a bulge/pseudo-bulge, and 2 kpc-scale AGN radio jets that are embedded in extended molecular gas reservoirs that are 5 to 20 kpc in size. The CO (1$-$0) velocity fields show structures possibly associated with discs (elongated velocity gradients) and interacting objects (off-axis velocity components). There is evidence for a decrement in the CO (1$-$0) surface brightness at the location of the host galaxy, which may indicate radiative feedback from the AGN, or offset star formation.We find CO-H$_2$ conversion factors of around $\alpha_{\rm CO} = 1.5\pm0.5$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$)$^{-1}$, molecular gas masses of $> 3\times10^{10}$ M$_{\odot}$, dynamical masses of $\sim 10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$ and gas fractions of around 60 per cent. The intrinsic CO line luminosities are comparable to those of unobscured AGN and dusty star-forming galaxies at similar redshifts, but the infrared luminosities are lower, suggesting that the targets are less efficient at forming stars. Therefore, they may belong to the AGN feedback phase predicted by galaxy formation models, because they are not efficiently forming stars considering their large amount of molecular gas., Comment: 22 pages, 15 figures with additional 1 figure in the Appendix. We analyse the mass density distribution in the centres of galaxies across five orders of magnitude in mass range. Using high-quality spiral galaxy rotation curves and infrared photometry from SPARC, we conduct a systematic study of their central dark matter fraction ($f_{\rm DM}$) and their mass density slope ($\alpha$), within their effective radius. We show that lower-mass spiral galaxies are more dark matter dominated and have more shallow mass density slopes when compared with more massive galaxies, which have density profiles closer to isothermal. Low-mass ($M_{\star} \lesssim 10^{10}\, \rm M_{\odot}$) gas-rich spirals span a wide range of \fdm\ values, but systematically lower than in gas-poor systems of similar mass. With increasing galaxy mass, the values of \fdm\ decrease and the density profiles steepen. In the most massive late-type gas-poor galaxies, a possible flattening of these trends is observed. When comparing these results to massive ($M_{\star} \gtrsim 10^{10}M_{\odot}$) elliptical galaxies from SPIDER and to dwarf ellipticals from SMACKED, these trends result to be inverted. Hence, the values of both $f_{\rm DM}$ and $\alpha$, as a function of $M_{\star}$, exhibit a U-shape trend. At a fixed stellar mass, the mass density profiles in dwarf ellipticals are steeper than in spirals. These trends can be understood by stellar feedback from a more prolonged star formation period in spirals, causing a transformation of the initial steep density cusp to a more shallow profile via differential feedback efficiency by supernovae, and by galaxy mergers or AGN feedback in higher-mass galaxies., Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, MNRAS in press. WD J2356$-$209 is a cool metal-polluted white dwarf whose visible spectrum is dominated by a strong and broad sodium feature. Although discovered nearly two decades ago, no detailed and realistic analysis of this star had yet been realized. In the absence of atmosphere models taking into account the nonideal high-density effects arising at the photosphere of WD J2356$-$209, the origin of its unique spectrum had remained nebulous. We use the cool white dwarf atmosphere code presented in the first paper of this series to finally reveal the secrets of this peculiar object and details about the planetesimal that polluted its atmosphere. Thanks to the improved input physics of our models, we find a solution that is in excellent agreement with the photometric observations and the visible spectrum. Our solution reveals that the photosphere of WD J2356$-$209 has a number density ratio of $\log\,{\rm Na/Ca}= 1.0 \pm 0.2$, which is the highest ever found in a white dwarf. Since we do not know how long ago the accretion episode stopped (if it has), we cannot precisely determine the composition nor the mass of the accreted planetesimal. Nevertheless, all scenarios considered indicate that its composition is incompatible with that of chondrite-like material and that its mass was at least $10^{21}\,{\rm g}$., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. Calibration is a key step in the signal processing pipeline of any radio astronomical instrument. The required sky, ionospheric and instrumental models for this step can suffer from various kinds of incompleteness. In this paper we analyze several important calibration methods, ignoring for now the ionosphere. The aim is to use established statistical and signal processing tools to provide a generic method to assess calibratability of an instrument. We show how currently popular calibration techniques differ in their assumptions and also discuss their theoretical commonalities. We also study the effect of only using a sub-set of baselines on the calibration and provide theoretical methods to analyze excess noise and biases that it might introduce. In order to simplify the physical interpretation of the results, we introduce a new signal processing model which is capable of modeling instrumental direction dependent effects and spectral smoothness of the individual receiver gain within a beam-formed station. The statistical properties of this model are then studied by deriving the Cram\'er--Rao bound (CRB). We finally define a mathematical framework for calibratability of an instrument based on the model used which is generic and can be used to study different instruments. These theoretical results are then verified using numerical simulations.

We investigate the implications of interference detection for experiments that are pursuing a detection of the redshifted 21-cm signals from the Epoch of Reionization. Interference detection causes samples to be sporadically flagged and rejected. As a necessity to reduce the data volume, flagged samples are typically (implicitly) interpolated during time or frequency averaging or uv-gridding. This so-far unexplored systematic biases the 21-cm power spectrum, and it is important to understand this bias for current 21-cm experiments as well as the upcoming SKA Epoch of Reionization experiment. We analyse simulated data using power spectrum analysis and Gaussian process regression. We find that the combination of flagging and averaging causes tiny spectral fluctuations, resulting in `flagging excess power'. This excess power does not substantially average down over time and, without extra mitigation techniques, can exceed the power of realistic models of the 21-cm reionization signals in LOFAR observations. We mitigate the bias by i) implementing a novel way to average data using a Gaussian-weighted interpolation scheme; ii) using unitary instead of inverse-variance weighting of visibilities; and iii) using low-resolution forward modelling of the data. After these modifications, which have been integrated in the LOFAR EoR processing pipeline, the excess power reduces by approximately three orders of magnitude, and is no longer preventing a detection of the 21-cm signals., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Quadruply lensed quasars are extremely rare objects, but incredibly powerful cosmological tools. Only few dozen are known in the whole sky. Here we present the spectroscopic confirmation of two new quadruplets WG0214-2105 and WG2100-4452 discovered by Agnello & Spiniello (2018) within the Dark Energy Survey (DES) public footprints. We have conducted spectroscopic follow-up of these systems with the Southern African Large Telescope as part of a program that aims at confirming the largest possible number of optically selected strong gravitational lensing systems in the Equatorial and Southern Hemisphere. For both systems, we present the spectra for the sources and deflectors that allowed us to estimate the source redshifts and unambiguously confirm their lensing nature. For the brighter deflector (WG2100-4452), we measure the stellar velocity dispersion from the spectrum. We also obtain photometry for both lenses, directly from DES multi-band images, isolating the lens galaxies from the quasar images. One of the quadruplets, WG0214-2105, was also observed by Pan-STARRS, allowing us to estimate the apparent brightness of each quasar image at two different epochs, and thus to find evidence for flux variability. This result could suggest a microlensing event for the faintest components, although intrinsic variability cannot be excluded with only two epochs. Finally, we present simple lens models for both quadruplets, obtaining Einstein radii, SIE velocity dispersions, ellipticities, and position angles of the lens systems, as well as time delay predictions assuming a concordance cosmological model., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS, 10 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables. We present a new sample of galaxy-scale strong gravitational-lens candidates, selected from 904 square degrees of Data Release 4 of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS), i.e., the "Lenses in the Kilo-Degree Survey" (LinKS) sample. We apply two Convolutional Neural Networks (ConvNets) to $\sim88\,000$ colour-magnitude selected luminous red galaxies yielding a list of 3500 strong-lens candidates. This list is further down-selected via human inspection. The resulting LinKS sample is composed of 1983 rank-ordered targets classified as "potential lens candidates" by at least one inspector. Of these, a high-grade subsample of 89 targets is identified with potential strong lenses by all inspectors. Additionally, we present a collection of another 200 strong lens candidates discovered serendipitously from various previous ConvNet runs. A straightforward application of our procedure to future Euclid or LSST data can select a sample of $\sim3000$ lens candidates with less than 10 per cent expected false positives and requiring minimal human intervention., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We use a sample of 17 strong gravitational lens systems from the BELLS GALLERY survey to quantify the amount of low-mass dark matter haloes within the lensing galaxies and along their lines of sight, and to constrain the properties of dark matter. Based on a detection criterion of 10$\sigma$, we report no significant detection in any of the lenses. Using the sensitivity function at the 10-$\sigma$ level, we have calculated the predicted number of detectable cold dark matter (CDM) line-of-sight haloes to be $\mu_{l} = 1.17\pm1.08$, in agreement with our null detection. Assuming a detection sensitivity that improved to the level implied by a 5-$\sigma$ threshold, the expected number of detectable line-of-sight haloes rises to $\mu_l = 9.0\pm3.0$. Whilst the current data find zero detections at this sensitivity level (which has a probability of P$^{{\rm5}\sigma}_{{\rm CDM}}(n_{\rm det}=0)$=0.0001 and would be in strong tension with the CDM framework), we find that such a low detection threshold leads to many spurious detections and non-detections and therefore the current lack of detections is unreliable and requires data with improved sensitivity. Combining this sample with a subsample of 11 SLACS lenses, we constrain the half-mode mass to be $\log$(M$_{\rm hm}) < 12.26$ at the 2-$\sigma$ level. The latter is consistent with resonantly produced sterile neutrino masses m$_{\rm s} < 0.8$ keV at any value of the lepton asymmetry at the 2-$\sigma$ level., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures, submitted for publication on MNRAS

Observations of the redshifted 21-cm hyperfine line of neutral hydrogen from early phases of the Universe such as Cosmic Dawn and the Epoch of Reionization promise to open a new window onto the early formation of stars and galaxies. We present the first upper limits on the power spectrum of redshifted 21-cm brightness temperature fluctuations in the redshift range $z = 19.8 - 25.2$ ($54-68$ MHz frequency range) using 14 hours of data obtained with the LOFAR-Low Band Antenna (LBA) array. We also demonstrate the application of a multiple pointing calibration technique to calibrate the LOFAR-LBA dual-pointing observations centred on the North Celestial Pole and the radio galaxy 3C220.3. We observe an unexplained excess of $\sim 30-50\%$ in Stokes $I$ noise compared to Stokes $V$ for the two observed fields, which decorrelates on $\gtrsim 12$ seconds and might have a physical origin. We show that enforcing smoothness of gain errors along frequency direction during calibration reduces the additional variance in Stokes $I$ compared Stokes $V$ introduced by the calibration on sub-band level. After subtraction of smooth foregrounds, we achieve a $2\sigma$ upper limit on the 21-cm power spectrum of $\Delta_{21}^2 < (14561\,\text{mK})^2$ at $k\sim 0.038\,h\,\text{cMpc}^{-1}$ and $\Delta_{21}^2 < (14886\,\text{mK})^2$ at $k\sim 0.038 \,h\,\text{cMpc}^{-1}$ for the 3C220 and NCP fields respectively and both upper limits are consistent with each other.
